I've been eyeing this place for a good minute because they're pretty well known for dry aging their fish. It was my girl's birthday, so I decided to pick up a handroll kit for two to celebrate. I placed the order online, and it was ready to go when I got there. The store itself is super clean and tidy. They have an area where they sell fresh fish and other market goods, a cafe for coffee, and a handroll bar where you can sit down and eat similar to KazuNori. Since I was already there, I decided I had to try the handrolls too. I got the medium combo that comes with five handrolls. I have to say, the quality of the fish was excellent. The dry aging really does give the fish a better taste and texture in my opinion. You can definitely tell they're serious about the quality here. I was really happy with the fish and honestly think it's worth the splurge, especially if you're trying to impress someone or doing something for a special occasion. There was also no wait at the handroll bar when I went, so you can easily come in, sit down, and bang out a few handrolls pretty quickly. Parking can be a little tricky since it's Little Tokyo, but there is some paid metered parking on the side if you're lucky. Overall, really impressed with the quality here. I'd definitely come back again, whether it's to grab some fish to take home or sit down for some handrolls. read more

A film critic for the SF Chronicle once opined on his distaste for a certain genre of movies. He reported that he generally tried to avoid being assigned such films to view, but when it happened he was still able to identify whether the film was good, bad, or middling. He assigned the Chronicle's "little man" rating accordingly, rather than on his distaste for the genre. I mention this only to say that while I personally wasn't enamored of The Joint Seafood, I could observe that it was impeccably neat and clean, had zero smell of fish (a feat for a place that doubles as a fish market), and served pristine offerings of the freshest of fish in made-to-order handrolls. Did I enjoy the place? Not particularly. The Joint's offering falls into a category I consider "precious" and it's not my preferred style of dining. Sitting at the immaculate counter, with go-nowhere ambient music as background noise, I tried the "OG Handroll Set" (5 rolls, $32). Every handroll was perfect and perfectly unexciting to me. But I recognized the quality of the offering. Los Angeles has several places specializing in these simple, classic handrolls. Here you get not only the handroll offerings, but also a fish counter where you can purchase their specialty, dry-aged seafood. Retail offerings and a coffee/pastry bar complete the array of The Joint's offerings. What they do, they seem to do very well. Though it wasn't my jam, If you're a handroll purist, The Joint Seafood will likely be highly satisfying. read more

Wow ~ how am I just now finding out about this place? I'm in the area quite often and always end up getting onigiri in the more crowded area of Little Tokyo just cause I like to eat something quick. I'm gonna have to give the onigiri a rest and start coming here instead. I came by yesterday for their Summer Block Party where they hosted multiple vendors. It was a cute event with a variety of foods, enough places to sit, and everyone working was very helpful and kind. The service was quick as well. I enjoyed the size of the bar, it didn't make you feel like you're staring directly into your neighbor's eyes as you're eating. Restrooms were clean and had nice air freshener. I tried the Slammin' Salmon and Spicy Tuna based on their recommendations. Both were packed with flavor and texture. No need to dip these into soy sauce really, but I added a bit of their wasabi to burn through my nostrils. The flavor of the crab was quite prominent on the Slammin Salmon and overall it was giving a lil sweet / spicy + tart. I normally don't care for tuna, but I guess the dry aging process makes it a big ol' YES for me. It was creamy and had a great kick. Both were 10/10. Overall I loved it. Joint Seafood has an array of offerings. The Block Party was a nice mix of vendors and it was definitely busy. Porto's offered a Basque Cheesecake with Caviar. Interesting flavor combination. The dry aged fish offerings were intriguing, I opted for the Not Canned Tuna, which was quite tasty. At $16.00 it was definitely premiumly priced. Paired well with some crackers. I also had Uoichiba Temaki Bar located inside. Ordered the following: 1. Crunchy Crab ***** my personal favorite 2. Futomaki **** tasty 3. Salmon Teriyaki Complimentary Ginger and Wasabi was nice touch. They also were selling $6 ice cream sandwiches. Stopped by for the hand rolls and was really impressed! We both ordered the small hand roll set and added a few à la carte rolls, which ended up being the perfect amount. Everything was incredibly delicious, and the flavors were spot on. The staff was wonderful from start to finish friendly, attentive, and welcoming, which made the experience even better. The marketplace is a nice bonus to browse before or after your meal, and the coffee bar was great too. I also tried the matcha, and it was good! I got the mini and the smoked black cod hand roll. I asked if they could sub out shrimp with another fish and they said they could with white fish. There were 2 different white fishes they could sub but its whatever was available. I think it was sea bream or red snapper. I think i ended up with sea bream and it was citrusy but yunmy. The tuna wasnt blood and also not chopped up finely. The salmon handroll was yummy. The smoke cod is either you like it or you dont. I liked it because it was smokey. I think i would try the shrimp because it seemed like it was cooked sweet shrimp and not raw slimey shrimp. The slamming salmon i thought was going to be on top of rice crackers but the rice craker was inside it. I liked it cause it was seared and it had the crunch. The inly bad thing is the seaweed is fresh but doesnt really taste like seaweed. I got the applejack matcha and brown sugar latte with oat milk and i think i prefer the brown sugar latte more. It tasted like a vietnamese coffee but not as strong. The apple jack matcha was good and didnt taste syrupy even with the apple syrup added. They have a mini fish market where yiy can purcahse dry aged fish. Parking is metered street parking or a random lot that youd have to pay $5-10. This place is brand new, so everything is impeccably clean and shiny! They're a 3-in-1 cafe, fish monger, and hand roll bar. This is their second sister location. I'm a big fan of their Sherman Oaks location, but it's quite far and I haven't tried their hand rolls yet. Overall, the value is excellent because the portions are generous and the fish-to-rice ratio is much better than most handroll spots. Medium OG Handroll Set - Lean Tuna -- 5/5, exactly what you'd expect from a classic tuna hand roll. - Fatty Tuna -- 4/5, a standard negi toro hand roll, but I wanted more negi and a stronger tuna flavor. - Steelhead Salmon -- 4/5, great fish quality, but I would've preferred it without the ume/plum flakes. - Whitefish -- 5/5, white fish paired with yuzu kosho-style sauces is always a winning combination - Prawn -- 1/5, the menu should've specified that the prawn was cooked. I wouldn't have ordered this set if I'd known. Cooked prawn is not a good value hand roll for me personally. Pickles plate -- 4/5, too sweet and not pickled enough for my personal preference. Great portion size and pricing though. Fish stock broth -- 5/5, great broth but it was SO hot. I couldn't drink it until the end of the meal because it was burning my mouth. Sparkling Yuzu -- 5/5, great yuzu flavor!! Not too sweet or sour, very well balanced Feedback: 1. For a handroll bar, they should consider providing wet wipes before the meal. We're eating with our hands, so usually is basic standard for most hand roll bars. 2. I wish the hand roll set menu did a better job of describing what was in each hand roll. If you haven't had dry aged fish, please do yourself the favor and visit The Joint Seafood / Uoichiba Handroll Bar, in either their Sherman Oaks or Little Tokyo location. Owner Liwei specializes in dry aging fish, which brings out unique flavors and textures that gives "Fresh Fish" a run for it's money. I can't believe it's taken me this long to give them a try. The concept is a combination of a fish market, handroll bar, and coffee shop in a beautifully designed space in the Little Tokyo location. The handrolls were all equally delicious with extra crispy nori featuring the dry aged fish. The market also has the same fishes that can be purchased and sliced as mori mori/sashimi boxes. Shoutout to Erik and the rest of the team, for the welcoming experience. This will be in the rotation going forward now that they are much closer to the SGV. read more

Me and my fiancé are so lucky to be living right across the street from this place (2min walk) . Their food is exceptional. They have a sushi bar AND a bakery/cafe inside the same place. I got their cold brew and I liked it a lot cuz it doesn't taste watered down. Their sushi bar is SO yummy. It's not shown in the pictures but the Slammin' Salmon and OG Six fatty tuna was bomb. Their service is really good, Andrea our waitress was super lovely and accommodating. And Javi was super sweet and informative too. The fish is delicious - I wish the market where you can buy the fish to take home would closer later than 5pm. I used to drive all the way to their other store in the valley to pick up the dry aged sashimi, so I'm really glad they opened one next door to where I live. With that said I'm not sure what it is about the handrolls - it good not great. The fish taste great but no wow factor once it's added to the handroll. I still prefer yonomi or kazu nori handroll over here even though the fish here is better. Maybe it's the rice or the other garnishments they add to it but something falls flat for me. Unfortunately they don't sell cuts of sashimi for the dine in as I would probably enjoy that more. The dry age fish is definitely a must try here though. read more

Also really appreciated getting a bag of ice; the items I got were still cold by the time I got home. lox spread: its tasty but not easily spreadable, a good amount of lox in it though 8/10 I think it would be sooo delicious paired with an everything bagel from Brooklyn bagel bakery smoked salmon dip: paired it with some kettle cooked jalepeno chips and a tomato corn salsa in a lettuce cup and it was sooo good. slaps 10/10 smoked whitefish dip: recommended item that was made today; I paired it with some kettle cooked salt and vinegar chips in a lettuce cup 10/10 i think it would also go well with some pickled carrots, daikon, and jalapeños not pictured but I also got: blueberry hibiscus herbal tea, rose melange white tea, peach blossom white tea, and orange blossom green tea. the teas are steeped to order so imagine a short wait if you like it iced. the teas are unsweetened but you have the option for asking it to come sweet. I got half sweet for myself and my coworkers; I feel like the sweetness was fine. I was recommended the earl gray lavender and brown sugar latte but i was not in the mood for it today, will consider it next time. it would be nice if they had some cold brewed tea options too. Did not get any hand rolls this time because I was not hungry, but the menu looked good so I'll probably try it next time. Next time I also want to get the not canned tuna tuna salad because they cook yellowtail tuna in house for it, a more premium price for tuna salad than I normally get but it sounds interesting. There are also a lot of salts, sauces, and other interesting pantry items for sale that could be nice gift options to foodie friends too. pretty inside but limited seating. I recently visited Joint Seafood and I picked up various things! For fish I picked up tuna and salmon sashimi which were pretty fatty and melted in your mouth. I also picked up a Black Cod fillet which was light and buttery after cooking it in the oven. It was definitely the best cod I've picked up compared to other places. Tuna salad and the shrimp cocktail was fresh and delicious which I picked up using TooGoodToGo! The staff was super sweet and nice while placing my order. And were nice enough to include salmon skin when I asked to pay for some! Overall I'd recommend Joint Seafood when you'd like higher quality fish with a more unique taste due to their dry aging processes! Would definitely visit again to try their other fishes and even marinates that they offer read more
