    Delightfully light swordfish

This is a delightful little place in a delightful little neighborhood on a corner in this cluster of buildings that's very unusual. The servers are extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the dishes. It's a very shareable menu with very tapas sized plates. You could pretty much order the entire menu it's so small and that would be just about enough. I think the only thing we didn't order was the sweet bread. The components of these dishes that make up the flavor profiles are so unusual when they're explained to you. You don't get how this is all gonna work together, but when you taste it, it all works together perfectly. Everything was very delicious and the swordfish was like sushi level swordfish. It wasn't dense like a steak which normally swordfish is; it was very light. Having said that, both me and my friend liked our experience there but it wasn't a place we think we would go back to. It's kind of one of those places where it's like, all right, we tasted it. We're good. I guess I'll have to check back and see when they change the menu up and see what else is on there. The whole staff is made up a very lovely nice people, but I just didn't see it being a go to spot on my list of restaurants.

One of the most delicious and memorable meals I've had in a while! We went to Baby Bistro for dinner as a group of 4 last night and all fell in love with the place. Everything was impeccable, from the cozy ambiance in and outside the bungalow to the warm and friendly wait staff. It was recommended to order each of the 6 dishes on the menu for every 2 people so we did just that and added one of the two side to share and wine pairing. We loved the inventive dishes and thoughtful preparation that highlighted the flavor and texture of different seasonal ingredients. Every dish was so interesting to try, and we appreciated that there's no gimmick, just excellent food prepared with a lot of care. The menu changes every several months or weeks which is a slight bummer cuz I'd love to eat the exact same meal again but also exciting so we have a reason to revisit soon!

A literal hidden gem in LA! Not kidding, we were at the host stand and still not certain we found it, but I am so happy we did!. It's really cute and quirky inside and I love the open kitchen. We were seated in a very tight, but functional space bear the back. My only issue with the whole experience was the hard and unforgiving wooden seating and bulky footings on the tables that left no comfortable spot to set my huge feet. Service, from Luis, was excellent. Very engaging, offered suggestions and knew menu very well. Food runners were all great, too, including the Chef! A true team effort. As for the food, we loved everything. We chose 'tasting menu' and portions were kinda perfect for two. Dishes were creative, fresh, and delectable. Onion Bread is a must, and it's almost diabolical how craveable it is. I'd go just for that! Of couse, I suspect most dishes will change for seasons and availability, but if it's there, DO NOT MISS IT! Good wines available! An absolute gem that is worth your time!

Such a cute spot! From the moment I walked in I knew I would have a great time at Baby Bistro, it feels like eating at a friend's place. I also love how the music isn't too loud and you can actually hear your friend's speak. Service is incredible, everyone was very friendly and happy to share their favorites on the menu. We ended up ordering the whole menu including the extra broccoli salad. I was certainly impressed by the plating, flavor combos, and unique tastes but there was nothing I thought "I'd love to come back and eat that again", but maybe that's the point! Either way I love how fresh the ingredients were. Definitely pricey.

Came here for a 6th-anniversary dinner and fell in love with the vibes at Baby Bistro. Sitting at the kitchen counter was the best choice!! it was so entertaining to watch the kitchen team in action. We went through 5-6 plates and each one was better than the last. I'm still thinking about that bread dish with the mousse and pickled cucumbers... it's a absolute must-try! The wine list is curated perfectly to match the menu. If you're looking for a cute and intimate spot near Downtown with high-quality small bites, this is it.

I 'm someone always on the lookout for new restaurants to try, but I typically first read what other reputable sources have to say before trying it myself and forming my own opinion. So when Baby Bistro received a glowing write-up in the very reputable New York Times (not even a local newspaper!), I knew I had to try it. I actually cancelled my second visit to the excellent Baroo restaurant to come here. Baby Bistro is located in Victor Heights, a mostly residential area between Chinatown and Dodger Stadium. It's pehaps best known for Eastside Italian Deli down the street, very popular with law enforcement and regular folks. Baby Bistro is in a cluster of bungalows collectively called Alpine Courtyard. There are 4 eateries, a coffee house and a tattoo parlour here. The largest, a traditional Craftsman with a large porch and stonework, houses a branch of Cassell's Burgers and vegan bakery Bakers Bench, which I've tried--excellent! Perilla LA, an acclaimed banchan place, is in a converted garage. Baby Bistro and Heavy Water Coffee are in converted bungalows. Baby Bistro is petite in size with a reported 35 seats. Inside there are 3 dining rooms with an Arts and Crafts feel, plus a lovely outdoor "porch". Chef/owner Miles Thompson was hands-on at the stove, and then everywhere else in the open kitchen. Business partner Andy Schwartz, who curated the wine list (I don't partake), was working the front. The evening I was here was the same night the Los Angeles Times was holding their "101 Best Restaurants in Los Angeles" gala; Mr's Thompson and Schwartz would later depart to attend, where they would find out where Baby Bistro placed in the rankings. It was #51. Neighbour Perilla LA was #18. I was seated in the second dining room, which has the best view of the kitchen. The menu is also petite, printed in a beautiful typeface that, my server told me, is based off Chef Thompson's own penmanship. You see it on the website too. Parties of 2 or more are advised to order the entire menu or multiples thereof. As a solo diner, I ordered everything except the octopus main and the house bread and snap pea salad add-ons. Each dish lists only 2 ingredients, but of course all are more complex. Note also the dishes offered change frequently. There weren't a lot of non-alcoholic beverage options, I chose a cold barley tea that came not iced, but in a tea cup. My five dishes were: 1) Onion Bread/Brebis. Delish bread topped with squiggles of sheep's milk cheese and pickled cauliflower. 2) Spaghetti Squash/Passionfruit. There were many more ingredients in this dish, including a dusting of cheese. 3) Spiny Lobster/Yuzu. A yummy tartare of sorts. 4) Pork/Apple. Perfectly cooked wedges of pork loin separated by dollops of apple puree. There were leaves on top, but I don't remember what kind. 5) Pine nut/Rhubarb. I think these fine dessert cookies have been on the menu from the start. They are topped with a vegetable cream (did the server say cucumber or broccoli?) and chunks of rhubarb. Homey, cozy and unassuming, yet elegant and original, in a charming setting that feels like someone's home.

There were 6 of us and we had everything on the menu fired 3 times. It was the perfect amount of food. We enjoyed every dish... with some liking one dish over another. The only dish that was split in decision was the squid risotto. The 3 asians liked it and the 3 non-asians didn't care for it. The restaurant is super quaint and charming. Perfect for a romantic date night. And the staff were fantastic... super friendly, helpful & attentive.

Love grabbing a meal here; it's like having a really good meal at a friend's place. But maybe by candlelight cause it can be a bit dark. It's such a small meal, but you can't go wrong with any of the choices. I adore the bread the most, but if I have a quibble, it's that it can all be a touch heavy on the acidity so if you order the whole menu, it can taste a tiny repetitive. Service is always friendly and unrushed, and I love that they have a tasty non-alcoholic drinks.

We came here to celebrate my birthday with a group of six. I love that the menu is small, and based on our server's recommendations, we ordered two of each dish, plus one vegan version of each since one of our friends has a lactose allergy. They were super accommodating and adjusted all the dishes, which was awesome, though, of course, not quite as good as the original versions. We also ordered three bottles of wine recommended by our server, and they definitely have great taste! The only small critique we have is about the cookie dish... we found that the extra cream at the bottom made it a bit messy to pick up, especially since there was already plenty of cream on top.

This restaurant is located in what feels like a converted house inside of a complex that currently houses a handful of other wonderful spots. (I've been to a few of them now). This location is in an adjacent area of the edge of Chinatown and Dodger Stadium and has the ethos of giving a hidden gem feel to every spot located here. The menu, like its decor, is very minimalist. It also changes up as I was told that my visit is around the time they just changed up their menu for fall. It's designed for a pair to order everything on the menu. I would describe it as almost a set tasting menu with a sprinkle of 'choose your own adventure'. The vibe: I felt like I was at a nice dinner party that you see in dialog driven indie movies where the hosts are very wealthy, but you're unsure what they actually do for income. And you are isolated at your own table vs. having a seat at a much larger table. The host and server interacted with me more like I was a friend vs. a customer. I didn't get a chance to see where all the seating was, but I don't think the capacity is a lot, which I feel allows the maestros in the kitchen to focus their attention on each dish that heads to the tables. An overall note on the food - I thought the balance of the flavors and textures were excellent. At least on the dishes that I had. The way I was eating everything on and cleaning my plates, I was worried the folks clearing my table thought I haven't eaten in days, haha. I ordered: - Onion bread, Franklin's Teleme: delicious creamy cheese on a slightly crisp onion bread that soaks and adds its own flavors. Dining solo, they were able to cut the order in half. - Ankimo, salted plum: monkfish liver is probably my favorite thing to order at sushi restaurants, so I was happy to see this on the menu. Well prepared and the sauce added the acidity to balance the flavor of the Ankimo - Pork belly, figs: delicious. Sharp flavors from the figs to offset the richness from the pork belly. You would think pork belly is a slam dunk, but I recently had it at a restaurant where it wasn't balanced enough and the pork belly just came off as too rich. Well done here. BONUS: Chef Miles Thompson personally came to my table to drop off this dish off himself and explained the process of making it! I was by myself and full, so I couldn't order any more or the dessert even though I wanted to. Maybe next time with a bigger group. Because of the size, I'm worried this place will be hard get a table at some point. I think I may have been lucky as a walk in on a random Tuesday evening. I was able to park around the corner on the street and at the time, there was plenty of parking.

Love the homey vibes of this restaurant and how intimate it could be! The service is also wonderful, but the food has not much to be desired... I think the chef was a little too eager and went overboard with his creations. The common thing that all of the dishes have is how sour they are. Yuzu this, citrus that - it can really overwhelm your palette with nothing sweet or savory enough to balance out the entire menu. Speaking of menus, the entire thing is enough food for 2 people - add the wine pairing to it and it's already as expensive as several fine dining restaurants in LA that are more elevated than this one. I'd come back when the menu seems more balanced with its flavor profiles and if they're able to make it a little more affordable.

Came to Baby Bistro for my friend's birthday. It's located in quite the peculiar complex, which was a tad difficult to find. The menu is extremely limited, so much so that our server told us the way that it should be read is that it works like a tasting menu for two people. As such, we ordered everything on the menu. A quick rundown: 1. Onion Bread: Very peculiar taste. Liked the bread. The brebis (sheep's milk cheese) was very sharp tasting. I was fine with it, but I can see why people wouldn't be a fan of it. 2. Spaghetti Squash: This was definitely unique, and that can definitely be construed in a good or bad way. The cinnamon and squash made for an interesting flavor profile. As far as the dish goes, I was fine with it. But in a sequence of connective dishes, the cinnamon was a peculiar choice. 3. Ankimo: The monkfish liver was the first dish I actually liked. Nothing crazy, kept it straightforward unlike the first two dishes. Sometimes that's really all you need. 4. Fennel Caesar: I like Caesar salad, but fennel should not be used to make Caesar salad. I'll leave it at that. 5. Squid: This was squid wrapped around black rice and mushroom. Definitely the most creative item on the menu. I mostly liked the flavor profile of this one, could've skipped the kimchi-flavored onions though. 6. Spanish Mackerel: Straight-up well cooked fish. My favorite item on the menu. Could have had more of this. 7. Pine Nut: These were pine nut cookies with creme and rhubarb on top. Tasty, but nothing special. Service here was great. We got a good explanation of every dish. Our plates and utensils were constantly being refreshed. Very nice people here! Ambience here is not like your typical restaurant. You feel like you're entering someone's home rather than an actual restaurant. I guess, it is a baby bistro (pun intended). Overall, Baby Bistro is definitely of the more interesting restaurants I've been to in a while. I liked the vibe a lot, but I wasn't a fan of all the dishes as some items hit while others were misses. I respect the creativity though!

This place is so cute. It's so cozy and really gives such a peaceful vibe. Open kitchen so you can see them preparing dishes. It's a very small space so not really good for larger parties, but they have indoor and outdoor seating. And is most definitely worth a visit at least once every season. My favorite dishes definitely have to be the onion bread and the cookie. Those two dishes I don't think can be replicated anywhere else so they stood out to me the most. I was also in love with the snappea dish. Every dish is made well and taste so fresh and intentional. The pork dish was made well, but I wish the vinegar pieces on the top or on the side because the smell was so strong, but that's just personal preference. This place was so cute and charming and will definitely be back since they told us the menu changes every two weeks.
