Chef Ricardo Zarate learned Peruvian cuisine firsthand from his grandmother in Lima and introduced that unique taste to Los Angeles through his high profile award winning restaurants such as Mo-Chica, Picca, and Rosaline. He grew tired of the social obligations to critics and investors necessary to maintain his "celebrity chef" status and quietly opened the lo-key Hummingbird in a tiny former pupuseria in Echo Park. Here, he seems to found his niche, and far more happy, slinging solid no-frills Peruvian ceviche without outside investors demanding he cater to the market rather than his own instincts....and those instincts continues to draw in both loyal hipster customers, and locals from the neighborhood who have lived in Echo Park for generations. Stand-outs include his anticuchos, tiradito, chaufa, and of course, his ceviche. Don't come here looking for the flash and glamour of his previous restaurants, this is a neighborhood joint perfectly fitting its former working class roots. Plus, the mural of Shohei on the side of the building by local street artists KarPart and Zsorryon make Hummingbird a favorite spot for Dodger fans.

What a gem: small, packed, a bit noisy + live music from pianist and singer, but 100% worth every bite: delicious ceviches and other beautifully prepared items, served by knowledgeable staff. Yellowtail roll, Salmon Roll, Shrimp Dumpling, Ceviche mixto, Salmon Tiradito ...

I really wanted to love this place because the food was actually very fresh and tasty. In fact, I'd probably come back for takeout. Unfortunately, the dining experience was disappointing from start to finish. Since we didn't have reservations, we were seated outside, which was fine, but the service quickly went downhill. Our waiter forgot what beer I ordered and brought me two different beers before finally getting it right. My wife ordered a Coke that never arrived at all. The timing of the food made no sense either. We placed our order and then watched another couple who arrived 10-15 minutes after us receive their ceviche before we got ours. It left us wondering how orders were being handled. The biggest issue, however, was with the skewers. One piece of chicken on our skewer was visibly raw and completely inedible. To make matters worse, the guy cooking the skewers was standing right behind us eating from another skewer while simultaneously tending the food on the grill. I never saw him wash his hands afterward. Watching someone eat while handling customers' food is incredibly unsanitary and unacceptable.

The ambiance is casual and a little kitschy, which I didn't expect, but the food all blew me away. Unique combinations like a salmon cardamom handroll that will blow your mind. Everything we had was excellent. Food came out super fast, though it took some time for us to flag a server down. We found easy street parking. Highly recommend paying this spot a visit.

I wasn't sure what to expect after reading some bad reviews. Glad I tried it anyway. Food: Everything we got was bright, flavorful, and fun. We did not have a single bland or subpar dish. -Shrimp dumplings. Tart, savory, herbal with the shiso leaf. Wow -Skewers. They've only been doing this for a few weeks, but pls keep going. We got the shrimp+scallop, chicken-pineapple, & lamb. Plump, heavenly, flavor bombs. -Barramundi ceviche. Some tasty fish. Excitingly bright but with properly tempered acidity. And the calamari was a nice bonus on the side. -Lomo saltado. I've had good & bad before, and this was firmly GOOD. Plump, juicy, perfectly tender meat. Rich sauce. Juicy fries. Excellent. -Fried halibut with cilantro sauce. Another perfectly textured fish with another incredible sauce. -Churro balls. Delicious caramel center. A nice way to end the meal. Service/Ambiance: A bit slow, but the lively atmosphere and lovely singer made the time fly anyway. It wasn't a big deal. It's a nice place to hang out and catch up with friends. Even walking in and sitting at the bar was lovely - we got a firsthand look at the delicious food being prepared, and got to scan for things that caught our attention (like the dessert). It ended up being about $85 per person for the above dishes. I have a pretty huge appetite and I left full & happy. I found street parking on the major road (Glendale), but was told the smaller street (Alvarado) is definitely safe. I didn't have any problems on Glendale, but def read the signs.

I went to brunch and we ordered a variety of things to try. Service is attentive. The blue prawns & scallop dish is fresh and beautifully plated. The Ceviche mixto has so many textures & flavor. The Soft shell crab Sando is crispy and decent size. The fish chicharrón lettuce wraps come in 3 with salsa criolla & ceviche aioli. The Choripapas are crispy fries and we added an egg on top. The Purple corn iced tea is a MUST get- it's refreshing with its pineapple and Granny Smith apple chunks. For desert we ordered the Picarones which is a Peruvian doughnut twist, cream, pistachios & fig sauce on top. Overall a fantastic & filling meal! Parking- metered street parking

    anticuchos

We came in and sat at the bar in front of Chef Zarate. We got the happy hour chef's choice small omakase that was available combined with three skewers of anticuchos and a slice of pie for dessert. All of the food was very well sourced and executed. The dry aging on the fish was noticeable and the salmon roe in particular was very distinct in the texture, which was more al dente than I've ever experienced it. It was revelatory. Chef Zarate is rightfully noted for his talent and vision, and this place is a more casual environment than one can generally find cooking of this quality. We enjoyed it very much and are happy to have it as an option for Peruvian food executed at this very high, thoughtful level.

Wow! A delightful experience they served on Valentine's Day. A true hidden gem just a few mins away from Dodgers stadium. There is a super cool mural outside the restaurant of Shoei Ohtani and a VE old school bus which added to the local a flare. Chef Ricardo Zárate and his team really put a lot of love and effort into the dishes. From the playing and presentation, a true 5 star dinner. They even had live music to set the tone. The menu was a preset 5 course meal and every dish from start to finish was impressive. I will definitely be back to try their full menu. I was lucky enough to meet the chef and take a picture as well as sign their tile wall. They also had an amazing apple pie that I was lucky enough to get a slice to take home.

Loved this dining experience! The restaurant is quite small and a tight fit but the ambiance here was amazing. They had live music with a pianist and all the staff members were so kind. Everything here is meant to be shared but it can get pretty pricey if you are hungry. All the dishes had great flavor and I loved the sauces the items were paired with.

Incredible food and ambience! Highly recommend. A bit of a rough check in experience--it's very unclear where to connect with a host to let them know you have arrived, and there is just an area outside on the curb to congregate before you're called. Despite having a reservation we were not seated for 20-30 minutes which I found odd. The host had a weird attitude as if I was rushing him--I was only asking where to check in? We stood there for a while before being acknowledged. Once seated, we were back on course. The meal was absolutely fantastic. Innovative, interesting and varied flavors and textures. We ordered a couple of non alcoholic aguas frescas and they were so delicious! Not overpowering but very refreshing and a perfect reset between courses. The guacamole was very interesting, unlike any guacamole I have had in the past, with tomatoes that were marinated beforehand. The pieces of fish were very generous, the dumplings were warm, crispy, and savory, and every bite had such interesting flavor and texture combinations. The pasta course was so tender and the steak course was filling and satisfying. During the meal we had a delightful artist serenading us in the background and the combination of food, music, and service (excluding the host), really made our time magical as we celebrated our anniversary.

If happiness could be served in a bowl, it would taste exactly like the ceviche at Hummingbird Ceviche House! This spot is such a gem -- bright, colorful, and totally laid back, but the food is seriously next level. The ceviche is as fresh as it gets -- tangy, citrusy, with just the right amount of heat. Every bite feels like a little vacation. We tried a few varieties and couldn't pick a favorite because they were all amazing. The portions are generous, the plating is beautiful without being fussy, and the staff is super friendly and clearly passionate about what they're serving. Even the sides -- plantains, chips, you name it -- are so good you don't want to share. Hummingbird makes you want to come back the next day and do it all over again. If you love ceviche (or even if you think you don't), this place is a MUST go!

It's more than enough time to run next door and grab your treats. I ordered a slice of the lemon loaf, a gluten-free cookie, and the classic chocolate chip cookie. The lemon loaf slice is huge, I'd say it's the equivalent of two slices, so it's definitely big enough to share. As for the cookies, Levain is known for making them thick and rich. A small piece goes a long way, making them perfect for savoring over a couple of days (if you have that much self-control!). The moment you walk inside, you're greeted by the incredible aroma of freshly baked pastries, and the service was warm and welcoming. I truly think everyone should experience a Levain cookie or pastry at least once. It's worth the visit!

The peach shaped and was forgettable Pros: - The cakes are very very cute and amazing to look at - Shop inside had a few tables. It seemed like most were just couples or a few friends sharing - Kiosk ordering do no need for human interaction if you don't want it Cons: - I really hated that the flavors did not match up to the cake shapes. I think I liked the lemon shaped one the best because it has the most citrusy passionfruit flavor. But when I break into the mango shaped cake, I expect a strong mango flavor. If the flavors were not going to match, I would've much rather like it if the cakes were in different shapes like a cute cartoonish animal, or smiley face, or a daisy. Some shape that I wouldn't associate with flavor - I also wasn't a huge fan of the flavor combos. I feel like they were really trying to go out there but often times the fruit flavors used didn't really match up with the tea or nut flavors. The flavors were not balanced at all, often just very muddled with one flavor either being too strong or not strong enough, or interfering with a fruits flavor. Some of the cakes were floral tasting from tea or almost slightly savory. The cakes are not sweet at all. Maybe I was just unlucky and tried the worst flavors. Again the lemon shaped one was the best because passionfruit flavor was sharp enough to cut through the other flavors - Parking is street and can be hit or miss - Expensive - I ordered a drink and I don't see it on the menu, or I just can't remember it. That's how different it was. I do remember thinking it was so sweet Would I go again? Absolutely not
