I recently picked up my black lab, Jacks, after a week of boarding, and unfortunately had a very uncomfortable interaction with the groomer. The first thing said to me when I asked how he did was: "He's a DICK." I was honestly shocked. Apparently, he did not like the high-powered dryer or having his feet handled during grooming. While I completely understand that some dogs can be difficult to groom -- especially large dogs unfamiliar with professional grooming environments -- the way this was communicated was extremely unprofessional. A professional groomer could have easily said he was "difficult to groom," "anxious during drying," "didn't tolerate the dryer well," or "struggled with foot handling." Any of those would have communicated the issue appropriately without immediately insulting my dog the moment I reunited with him after 6 days away. What made it more confusing was that I had originally asked how Jacks did during boarding overall, and only after I questioned the comment did the groomer add, "But he's so sweet otherwise." So clearly this was situational grooming behavior, not an aggressive or dangerous dog. I've washed him at PetSmart before without issue, so while I understand every environment is different, the bedside manner here really left a bad impression. I left feeling uncomfortable and honestly, still kind of stunned by the interaction. The groomer also recommended I continue booking grooming appointments so he could "get used to it," but after that interaction, that's going to be a hard no from me. The initial boarding staff when I dropped him off was kind, and Jacks otherwise seemed happy and well cared for during his stay, but customer communication matters -- especially in animal care. read more

We boarded our two Great Danes for nine days while we were on vacation and I was really pleased with Cindy and Kay. I called a few times before hand as this was the dogs first time being boarded and we were in regular communication while on vacation. The whole time reviving great service. The dogs seemed to get along very well while staying there. When we arrived we were greeted with a clean and cheerful office. Jenna and the staff went above and beyond to help calm mine and my dogs anxiety over being separated during the holidays. They knew what each of my dogs needed and provided them with amazing care during their 5 day stay. Both dogs are elderly, and have different diets and medication needs. Just picked up my 2 Australian Shepherds from a 12 day stay and they were well taken care of, walked daily and groomed at our request before we came and got them. Jena noted a GI issue with our younger dog that we were aware of but I was happy she noticed, Cindy and Jena always take good care of our boys and I would not trust any other kennel to take care of them the way they do. I highly recommend this kennel and we have used them for at least 12 years and have always had great care for our Aussies. read more

Horrible experience. I took my golden doodle here because I was having surgery. He was there for 6 weeks. I was told he would be exercised daily but I don't think he was ever allowed out of the pen. They didn't give him his medicine but I was told they did. They gave me back his blanket full of urine and feces. My dog would hold himself all day and never has accidents. That can only mean he was never let out to go to the bathroom. I feel so bad that I let this happen. Please don't take your dog here! read more

I will never take my dog here again. The office area stinks as if the kennels never get cleaned. You do not get to see where your dog is going to stay. I was literally staying a couple of houses away and said that if my dog was acting anxious or barking a lot to call me and I could spend time with him to calm him down. I was told no that would make him more anxious. Hmmm. Should have been a red flag. I added the daily walks to the plan for the 3 days. Upon picking my 6 month old dog up, I was told they didn't get around to walking him and she mumbled some reason why. She then said my dog was disruptive and made the other dogs bark the whole time. First of all, he's a 6 month old puppy who has never been kennelled. Of course he is going to be upset and that is why I offered to come spend time with him during the day. Secondly, a 6 month old needs interaction and playtime and walks and I'm pretty sure he got nothing but left in a kennel alone for the 3 days. He also was dehydrated and begging for water when I got him in the car. I have never seen him slurp up water so quickly. Water is a right and not a privilege! They also overcharged me as they charged me bug dog price for him even though he is 27 pounds and under the 30 pounds they list as being big dog. I wish I had read the reviews of this place prior to bringing him here. They truly do not care about your pet . read more

You know what, the manager was super sweet and super honest but unfortunately that left an enormous concern on my part. I was going away via a flight I had to make in SF. I realized after a night's rest that when the front desk said that my dog had not been walked all day when I came to drop off my other two dogs at 4pm. My first dog had been dropped off at 10AM! The kennels are all cement, no grass, no soil. It had only been 14 hours when I drove all the way back from SF to GV to move them to home care with a petsitter I could find through a friend last minute. I was horrified that given my 1st dog had just had major surgery 2 weeks prior and was in need of at least basic care - such as walks that they guarantee in writing - and that next morning her blanket and pillow I left for her so she didn't have to lay on the cold cement was COVERED in her own feces because they had failed to walk her. I don't think these people are bad people because I couldn't comment. I don't know them. But, when I asked that morning at my unexpected pick up time before driving all the way back to SF to make my flight after trusting my gut that this was NOT the place, I asked them had they been walked that morning yet. The answer was that the Show Dogs there on the display in the front yard had to be cared for FIRST. Now, that I think about it. All 4 times that I had driven there the ONLY dogs that are in that front yard are the 3 Show Dogs . . . Do dogs really get to play outdoors and get the number of requested and agreed upon walks? I sincerely wonder. You make up your own mind, but please DO your own homework before leaving your furry loved ones with them. read more

No complaints about how my chihuahua was cared for, but an FYI/BE AWARE when it comes to daily charges. My dog was there for 47 hours: dropped off at 4:30 and picked up at 3:30 47 hours later. I was expecting to pay for two days, but was told, since the "deadline" pick up time is 3pm, I had to pay for 3 days. This feels completely outrageous. Since they are open until 5:30 pm, I cannot understand why this artificial deadline is in place, and why I had to pay $60 (3 days) when my dog was only there for 47 hours. I definitely feel ripped off, even if the deadline is posted. The Kennels should revisit this policy! read more

Went for a tour of the facility to choose a kennel for my animals while on vacation. The first thing that hit me was a terrible stench. I could see into the cat room located in the front office, and saw that the litter boxes had not been changed for some time. All in all the place appeared unsanitary to me. I was then flat out denied a tour of the facility and only allowed to see the front office and sample kennel. I can't trust a facility that appears to be hiding something. I choose another local kennel, which far surpassed my expectations, completely uncensored and what a trusted kennel should be. read more

The Kennels went above and beyond for me! I was boarding my female there while out of the country and having Sirius Canine breed her. The Kennels kept in contact with me via email when my female had an unexpected prolapse. They coordinated and communicated with my vet and the breeding facility for me while I wasn't able to. My female's prolapse was kept clean and everything went well!! A+ service and huge thank you to Jenna who was a huge help! read more

I have a diabetic dog and an arthritic dog...they never seem to be upset when we leave them, and come home happy and tired. My diabetic dog needs insulin shots twice a day with meals, and they had no problems administering to her...I highly recommend The Kennels for boarding. The only "down side" are the hours, trying to be sure we are back in time when we need to pick them up. read more

This place doesn't deserve 1 star. If we could rate it negative it would be -100. Took our 3 dogs for 2 1/2 days. When we picked them up, they were covered in diarrhea. Beauty English Creams covered in their own feces. They smelled horrible and were all shaking uncontrollably. Not a "sorry" or anything from the incompetent staff. What had they done, or not done to my dogs? I immediately called my vet and proceeded with treatment. NEVER AGAIN!!!! Please go to your vet for board and care, no matter the price...your family is well worth the cost. :-( read more

I picked my dog up after a 2 night stay there. He was very anxious and nervous. The rude woman said he was very stand offish. They never let him out of the kennel. She said they don't let them out for playtime on the first visit. I wish I had know that before I left our puppy there. He came home with terrible diarrhea and vomiting. We are waiting for the vet to open now. The place is dirty and smells awful. The cranky old woman ran off a new customer while I was waiting for her to get my dog from the back. Very pleased with the service and care our dog received. I Always am nervous leaving my dog while on vacation but i felt much better after the owners actually invited me down to view the facility in advance of our stay. I didn't even know they offered some of the extra services until I visited but the grooming was great and much more professional than we were used to. They even took my dog for walks along the creek and pond! We will be boarding our dog again for future holidays and bringing him in for monthly grooming! read more

The folks at the Kennels took excellent care of my cat, Benny. He had just lost his cat sister and I was going out of town for 2 weeks. The Kennel was very sensitive to his situation and made sure to gave him lots of attention. This was a last minute booking and they had no problem making Benny a place. The cat condos are a large 2 room space for each cat, and all cats are required to have vaccinations. All the animals get a lot of attention as the main office is in the building, it's family owned and operated, and there is always someone working around the place, e.g., grooming, cleaning, etc. I would highly recommend the Kennel for you dog or cat care when you need. I can't speak highly enough about the phenomenal experience we had at The Kennels in Grass Valley! We boarded our boxer and bull terrier with them for two weeks while we were on vacation. From the very beginning when we made the reservation The Kennels went above and beyond to provide us with information regarding their services and left us confident our dogs would be in good hands. The experience was just as great when we dropped the dogs off. We called a couple time when we were away to check in and both times they were very sweet and let us know everything was going great. I felt completely confident our dogs were happy and safe. They offer nature walks and personalized play sessions! They also did a wonderful job grooming the dogs before we picked them up. The kennel area is great and gives the dogs plenty of room. I can't recommend them enough! Thank you for taking incredible care of our puppies! We will definitely be back! read more

Picked up my dog on Friday afternoon and waited 20 minutes for service. Because it was 45 minutes after 3 pm(?!) they forced me to pay another days cost of $25.The attendent said "rules are rules" and walked away! I have been bringing my dog here for the past 7 years. The dog care is okay at best, customer service is absolutely horrible. It appears, if you are a show dog owner you get preferential treatment, everybody else they don't have time for. read more

I've been here a few times with both my dogs. Make sure you're aware they charge per day which means they will board both your dogs together and they don't advertise this. Horrible idea if one dog is a grazer and the other eats his food and the others. The runs are small enough for one dog. I stopped taking my big dog because I discovered dog vacay.com. The little one I recently took to the kennels and when I picked him up he was sick. The last said he has diarrhea but chalked it up to nerves even though he's never had diarrhea there before. He OBVIOUSLY caught something there during his week stay. They were doubting it happened there but my dog is vaccinated, doesn't hang out with other dogs or dog parks. After a trip to the vet shot to rehydrate him with 4 meds and $200 later he's feeling better. BTW diarrhea isn't an emergency so you'd have to tell them what to call you for. Not sure what they constitute as an emergency...death, lost dog? Never going back its dogvacay from now on. read more

I have NEVER been more dissatisfied and disappointed with a pet boarding facility as I was with The Kennels. I dropped in to take a look at the facility as we have a long awaited family trip planned for the springtime and need a place for our 10 yr old Vizla,Joey. I was very interested in seeing the "Special Assistance" rooms described on your website as our dog has arthritis, but was told "I could only see the stall in the lobby" which had no cushioned flooring just cement. The Groomer/Manager and a tiny dark skinned, dark haired woman are who helped me and I have to say were quite rude and short with their answers, as if I was inconveniencing them. Your website also boasts of,"The 100% climate controlled facility including independently controlled zones assure us that your pet will be cool and comfortable in the summer months and warm and cozy on those cold winter days." The day I was there it was just as cold inside as it was outside, and that day it was raining and very windy. So far it seems that everything of importance stated on your website is false. I would NEVER leave my dog in this facility and I urge any future customers to look closely at not only this website but the actual facility itself. read more
