Charm, comfort and delicious food all abound at this delightful bed and breakfast just 5 blocks from downtown Gettysburg. Our stay was everything we were hoping for and more. The General Early Suite was spacious and homey, with a private bath that included soft towels and a jacuzzi bubble tub/shower combo we loved. The beds were welcoming with soft sheets, great pillows and good lighting. Mark and Marj provided requested information and wonderful service during breakfast and as needed throughout our stay. Mark even hauled my heavy suitcase up to the second floor! The daily dessert after dinner was an unexpected joy. We highly recommend this Inn if you are looking for accommodations in Gettysburg.

With my birthday coming up and cabin fever setting in we decided that a trip to Gettysburg for a quick getaway was in order. It was very last minute, making reservations on Thursday for that Saturday. Together hubby and I looked online to explore hotels and bed and breakfasts in the area. We were looking for something affordable, close to downtown but not close enough that parking was a problem, and most of all in a beautiful house, the kind we dream of owning one day. We also like to stay at b & b's that have multiple common areas so we don't feel cooped up in our room all the time. Keystone Inn fit all of our criteria and then some. Mike, our host, was happy to allow us to check in an hour early. The inn's location was very easy to find, only a few blocks from route 30 and a short drive downtown. While it was the end of January we were greeted by a beautiful home decorated for Christmas. The holiday season was evident in every room, but it was timeless and done very well without being overkill. We choose the Michael Bowers room as we planned on spending a relaxing evening in for the most part. Having a dvd player was a nice perk, something I wish all b & b's had and we brought a movie from home. Once we got there however we found a great stock of movies, books, and games in the library that we ended up watching one of theirs. Our room was a little cold but I liked that we could control the temperature ourselves on both the wall unit and the electric fireplace. The loveseat was also a great place to snuggle up with the throw and enjoy the movie. We brought food and paper plates from home so having the fridge/microwave in the room was very convenient, although I would have loved to find a complimentary bottle of water or two there upon arrival. We also had a balcony and our own second floor exit. It was too cold to sit outside but the grounds are well manicured and surely a lovely sight when in season. Our bed was high and king sized. Hubby loved that he could stretch out. I loved the softness of the sheets and the firm mattress although I will say only finding two flat pillows was a bit of a disappointment (more on that later). There wasn't a spot of dust or dirt anywhere and everything was tastefully decorated but not overloaded or crowded. We had ample room to move around. Our bathroom was small but well equipped. The standup shower was oversize and had two seats. The water was hot and the pressure very good. The bath mat wasn't the best at staying put and absorbing water but it was ok. I only wish the room would have contained white spa robes to complete the experience. Keystone Inn goes out of their way to anticipate what their guests would need. The room binder contained not only information about the inn's policies but about local attractions, as well as menus, a cable guide, and the operating manuals for the tv and dvd players - nice! I especially enjoyed the scrapbook in the library that told the story of the original owners of the house in great detail as well as documented the updates to the grounds. I especially liked that we were given access to roam around. We sat in the parlor enjoying a cup of afternoon coffee before heading out. The dining area had an assortment of teas, fresh coffee, and cocoas out at all times for us to help ourselves. Breakfast is served there in the morning and there's a sign up sheet to pick your time - 8 or 9 am. There's an afternoon pastry served but we missed it, darn! Breakfast in the morning was fabulous! Mike is a very gracious host and an excellent cook. We really enjoyed our conversations with him and the other guests in the morning. The only downfall and reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was the pillows. Two were provided on our bed and 1 extra in the closet, all of which were very flat. Hubby and I are used to pillows + shams at home and there's nothing more luxurious than getting cozy in a bed full of fluffy pillows. We both tried numerous ways to make what was available work for us, even adding the throw pillows from the loveseat unto the bed. Nothing seemed to work and sleeping was difficult. Had it been earlier we would have brought this to Mike's attention but it was well after 11pm and we tried to make the best of it. Otherwise our stay was perfect. We both agreed that we'd love to come back again in season to explore more of what Gettysburg has to offer and would stay and recommend Keystone Inn for anyone seeking the same.

The pros: The staff is awesome. They get 6 stars. They did a great job explaining safety and how to handle the horse. This is extremely helpful for those with no riding experience. They provide helmets and a radio receiver with an earbud to listen to some canned recording explaining some background of personnel, battles, and music. You get to ride right next to some historic buildings and farmhouses that you wouldn't be able to on a road or bus tour. The cons: Unless you get a certified guide, they are not allowed to narrate the history of the battle as you ride along the trail. We did not have a guide along with our group for the ride so it was fairly quiet most of the ride. Unless you are very well versed with the locations of the army units and battle locations, the ride might be a bit confusing. If you can tie this into the end of a visit to Gettysburg with the museum, film, bus or car tour, then it will be a blast.

Gettysburg Railway - A most relaxing ride!

We registered online the day before, the price being $27 per person regardless of age. Our excursion departure was 12:30 pm and arrived at approximately 12:10. I'd advise arriving earlier because all the parking spots were taken save for the handicapped spaces, this we parked in a Gettysburg College lot. I printed out our receipt which I don't think was necessary since they already had who had purchased a ticket. Fortunately there was one 4 person seat left, 2 facing the front, and 2 facing the rear. The seats were most comfortable and everything was spotless. The children were offered a coloring book and a riny box of crayons. The announcements were amply loud, the problem being that we couod not hear our car guide making announcements, particularly because she stood in the front of rather than the center of the spacious and long car. Music played along with a prerecorded commentary for the majority of the trip. A very small portion went through the Battlefield as it traveled west for about a quarter mile and the went north up the east side of Oak Ridge with a brief view of the Peace Memorial. From there it was a peaceful ride through the Adams County countryside. We saw horses, cows, a snapping turtle, and a variety of birds. The train stopped for 5 to 10 minutes and then traveled in reverse on the same route, the entire trip taking about 90 minutes. I would recommend this for all adults although our 2 grandkids, aged 4 and 6, we're more interested in visiting the concession car which served soft pretzels with cheese, nachos, and gummy bears. Our car representative mentioned that they were considering adding ghost rides, wine tasting rides, and murder mystery rides. I enjoyed it much!

All these horses are rescued and it is so amazing to have the opportunity to contribute to this organization and ride a horse who has been built up by this amazing caring team. I had the pleasure of riding Gus who is an ex Amish work horse and the gentlest giant. Terry is truly so kind, accommodating, and very educated about the history of the battlefield and her horses. Her story telling was great and I could picture everything happening as Terry was explaining it to us. Terry also gave us the confidence to mount and ride our horses through the trails and how to properly handle them. The views were amazing and we had a great view of the blue ridge mountains in sight. We also had the pleasure of a nice breeze brushing through the peaceful battlefields as we rode the very tidy and well kept trails. If I could do this everyday I would and I'm so thankful to Terry and her team for giving my sister and I this experience to always look back on and remember. These guides are highly trained and specialized and insanely knowledgeable- we had excellent discussion and so much in depth learning about the battlefield as we trotted along. Sarah and Bogey (sp??) were our our drivers and they were so great to the horses and very skilled at handling anything that came up. Our guide was Chris and he was just incredible- I'd be shocked if there was anything he didn't know about Gettysburg lol!! Even his ancestors were part of the battle! Not only did he provide tons of info about the ins and outs of the battle, but he also dropped fun little pearls of trivia along the way - things like how the shapes of certain monument bases have different meanings and how the "avenues" were put in for tourists lol!! The guides have to pass a rigorous learning/testing regime to even be able to do the tours so you know they know their stuff! The tour is totally fun - but also treated with the utmost respect for the gravity of the subject - so many lives lost - such a tragic and heavy piece of history. I strongly urge anyone to take a guided tour on your visit - interacting with such knowledgeable guides really helps get a better understanding of the battle and the core issues etc. The tour starts in town at the Gettysburg Heritage Center - very easy to find and plenty of parking. They pick you up in the carriage right out front and off you go! The tour lasts around 2 hours and they let you interact with the horses afterwards if you want! Can't recommend it enough!!

Paul Bausermann was our tour guide and in a word- PHENOMENAL!! He was likable, entertaining, engaging, incredibly smart, had a great sense of humor and his timing was impeccable. I don't think anyone could hold a candle to his enthusiasm, vigor, and story telling. I learned so much about cannons, the battle, and those who fought. So many interesting facts- interesting that The Military Academy used to have seniors spend three weeks on the battlefield in order to graduate. Now they don't- what a stupid decision on their part!! Unfortunately I can't recall the name of our bus driver but he was excellent too! He did walk with a crutch and looked ultra professional in uniform- thank you!!
