The Lyric Theater is right in downtown San Jose, on the same block as the Tech museum. I'm certain…read morenobody who goes to the Tech museum in the day and then the Lyric Theater at night, as the audiences are from opposite ends of the age spectrum! We park at Cityview underground parking on Park street, eat at that greasy spoon Peggy Sues to validate our parking, and walk two blocks to the theater. Not sure if it worth the $7 to put up with those overpriced greasy hamburgers. The temperature at 730pm was 80 outside, and probably an AC induced 65 inside, so cold that I, in my shorts and light tennis shirt, felt like I was in a meat locker! If I had know how cold it was, I could have smuggled in my chicken leftovers from dinner instead of pigging out to eat them all. We discretely raid the candy jar closest to the will call desk, and farthest from the ticket seller, on our way past the restrooms. I stop by for a complimentary calendar, until the desk clerk says a $5 donation would be appreciated, causing me to drop the calendar like it was contaminated with Ebola! The wife stops by the restroom, and so do I, as there are always women lines at intermission, and sometimes mens lines, as there are only 2 toilets, and 3 urinals in the mens room -not much for a theater that seats 300. We have season tickets to the Lyric theater, which shows mainly Gilbert and Sullivan opera type live productions. Gilbert and who? It might as well be the stone age for you young Yelpers! And most of the audience seems so old that they may have been born in the age of G & S! We have season tickets at $100 apiece for 3 shows, while you can get Goldstar discounted tickets for around $20 apiece. Season ticket holders like us get the best seats in the house - I like the center section seats on the aisle. 14 rows, 2 aisles, 10 staggered seats across the orchestra section, with 6 seats on each side, and a separate balcony section. You have to rise to let people pass, as the seating is tight - don't step on my passion flower Birkenstock sandals! And the row in front of you is barely lower than yours, so you don't want to be seated behind some guy with a Frank Sinatra hat that I saw! The young couple in front of us move over one seat, due to a very tall man in the aisle seat. After intermission they are gone -another couple who are not sufficiently cultured to appreciate the finer points of G& S opera, like my wife. I don't even bother to read the subtitles over the top of the stage, but doze off between the musical singing scenes. Well wife, at least I don't snore! We were told that this show, Utopia, has not been performed in Northern California this year, and not in the Lyric theater for the past 20 years. And if my reaction is an indication, it will not be performed here for another 20 years! Once I had extra tickets for Mikado, and gave them to the ex-wife and hubby -yes even my ex-wife has a new hubby -probably one of those mail order grooms! Both of them left at intermission -not their cup of tea, as the stuffy British aristocrats would say! Afterwards you get to meet the actors and actresses in the play -there's me being escorted by 2 British redcoat soldiers to the stockade! The Lyric theater management is trying to expand their membership, and running more traditional plays -The Sound of Music is in March, 2015. And my ex-wife loves Sound of Music. I will give them our extra tickets that come with the season subscription -with my wife's permission of course!

Kooza by Cirque du Soleil was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The show blends jaw-dropping acrobatics with laugh-out-loud clowning and a live band that gives the whole thing an electric, almost magical energy. The set design is stunning--colorful, immersive, and constantly shifting--and the costumes are a feast for the eyes. Every act brought something unique: from heart-stopping tightrope walkers to contortionists who seemed to defy human anatomy. I honestly forgot to blink during some of the performances. What really stood out was the emotional storytelling and the humor. The clowns (not your typical birthday-party kind) had the whole audience giggling, and the show strikes a great balance between thrill and heart. Logistics-wise, everything was smooth. The staff were super friendly, parking was manageable, and there were plenty of snacks and drinks. Pro tip: get there early to soak in the atmosphere! If you're even thinking about going--do it. It's pure magic under the big top.

The clowns were hilarious and even interacted with the crowds. On the negitive side where wifey and I were seated our view was obscured by nets on some parts of the show, so if you go try to get in the center. Bottom line is if you've never been, Cirque Du Soleil is a must see, it'll make you smile, laugh, and mesmerized all at the same time.

Best wedding band ever! Night train took our wedding reception to the Next Level!…read more My wife and I thought long and hard over what to do for the music at our wedding. We're both huge live music fans, and love to dance. We knew we wanted a band, and Night Train was more in line with our musical tastes than all the others we looked at, but we were worried it "wouldn't be for everyone", and that we should either get a more standard wedding band or a DJ. Boy, are we glad we went with Night Train! We had a very broad range of age and musical taste among our guests, and let me tell you that Night Train satisfied all customers. Our friends and family are still bringing up how fun they were, and the wedding was four months ago. At first, we were a little worried about not having much control over the set list, but it was no problem at all. Michael started a shared spotify station with us, and we posted songs we liked on there over the few months before the wedding. Based off that and a few emails, the band created a surprise set list for us that completely blew us away. I had a moment where I heard The Beastie Boys on the radio, and I was like "F! We should have put more of this on our station!" I didn't bother to get in touch with the band, because this was like a week before the wedding, and they had already done their rehearsals. Next thing I know, they opened the dance party with "Fight For Your Right". It completely set the tone for the rest of the night! Later, they played "Give it Away" by the Chili Peppers, and my uncle looks to me and says "I hope they play 'Love Rollercoaster', I love that song." I was like "Yea, that would be cool, but that's a pretty deep track (Beavis and Butthead movie soundtrack), so I wouldn't get my hopes up." ...They played it like 5 songs later! There was one more unreal coincidence with the set: I have a serious emotionally rooted family connection to the Footloose soundtrack by Kenny Loggins. I never mentioned this to Michael, and they didn't play anything from that album.... But they did play "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins off the Top Gun soundtrack, which might have been even better! You should have seen the air guitars going on in the crowd for that one! So long story short: let the band do their thing and you will not be disappointed. I think the set they came up with was better than anything we ever could have dictated to them. A few other highlights were the bride crowd surfing in her wedding dress to "Aerials" by System of a Down, which the band learned by special request from me (and absolutely nailed), a Guns & Roses guitar solo involving a leaf blower, the female lead vocalist's voice on pretty much every song, and the Metallica mini set that they played that literally sounded like you were at a Metallica show. I manged to get a bloody lip during that one. It was PERFECT! For what it's worth, I've been told that bloodied lips and crowd surfing are optional. Good times and great dance parties are NOT!
