Here is the summary of my experience there: 1) Ambiance 3.5/5 - It looked like a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant with small seating and a couple of tables outside. The place was not very clean to be honest. 2) Service 4.5/5 - The service was good but was not very quick. 3) Food 4.5/5: The food that we had was really good except 1 thing. Here is the summary of the food we had: a) Tofu Pho (Large): It was huge and very tasty. I am not a fan of Tofu bit I loved it here. It was more than enough for 2 people. b) Taro Boba tea - It did not have ice and it was like a smoothie which we loved. had a lot of Boba c) Lychee Boba - This was very sweet and I could see the additional sugar syrup aded to it. Not sure why they had to add it and just because of that I this became very sweet 4) Value for Money 4/5 - This place looks small but its not very cheap PS: There is less parking on the road but there is a public parking right by the corner which is free on evenings and weekends. Gave The Lemongrass Kitchen a try one day for lunch. I knew exactly what I was there for: the shaking beef. Now the beef doesn't shake when it's on your plate or anything scary like that. Instead, it gets its name from the cooking process that requires a lot of shaking and stirring. Outside of the shaking, the dish consists of marinated beef that is sautéed in a wok with red onion and bell peppers, served on a bed of fresh lettuce with slices of tomato and cucumber. The restaurant was able to deliver the dish in the promised time. The very charismatic worker was a true joy to deal with. I probably would tip on take out regardless, but I love it when I feel like the person actually tries to develop a connection rather than simply getting me in and out. I was initially disappointed with the portioning, but that quickly subsided when I tasted the incredible flavors. I also realized this likely was my Western decadence unfairly coloring my perception. Sure enough, Shaking Beef is usually served as a smaller portion. The standard macros for the dish are incredible. You get 39 grams of protein from only 655 calories. Dining in Downtown Spartanburg is a little on the pricey side, but there's a lot of very good restaurants with great staff that deserve your business. This is one of them. read more

This is perhaps the worst Vietnamese food I've ever had. I came here with my wife and a friend to have lunch and sat ourselves. The menus were dirty and in a bad state of repair which was not off-putting to us at first, but in retrospect should've been a sign. Restaurant needed to be cleaned and felt dirty. We ordered a pork noodle bowl, pork rice plate, large pho dac biet, and cha gio. During ordering, the waiter was quite rude and disrespectful to us which put an initial poor impression. Furthermore, they spilled some of the soup on my friend and neither apologized nor offered to clean the mess. For the food: -The pho was quite small, the noodles still retained the shape of the package they came in (obviously not freshly made, likely reheated), had minimal flavor in the broth (it needed more spices and to cook longer with the bones, it was pretty dilute still) and had very little meat. -The noodle bowl was mainly lettuce and had no flavor on its own without adding nuoc nam. -The rice plate was the worse of everything. Overcooked rice, no marinade or spice for the pork, and a massive pile of grease. -The cha gio were ok, hot out of the fryer, but the filling was bland and needed more mushrooms and meat to enhance the flavor. The dipping sauce served was also from a jar, not made in house I would have stopped my review here, but were certain this place gave us food poisoning. Avoid this at all costs. Zero stars and deserves a health inspection. read more

Had an early dinner with some adult family - party of five. Note that they don't have any alcoholic drinks if that's important. Individual bottled water was provided for each of us. My wife had an iced Vietnamese coffee - delicious. Had the firecracker shrimp, egg rolls and spring rolls as appetizers to share. Egg rolls were the favorite of these - 4 relatively small rolls per order, very crispy, tasty and sweet chili sauce. Spring rolls were larger, stuffed with lettuce and shrimp - not great but not bad, and the fried shrimp was about what you would expect....unremarkable but good. Entrees were all very good - two orders beef pho, pork and rice noodle bowl, beef and glass noodle bowl, pork and vegetables with steamed rice, and I had the "shaking" beef which like the pork and rice dish - seemed to be prepared a little differently than what was described on the menu. I think I liked what I received better than what is on the menu .... No lettuce and tomato with the beef alongside steamed rice, instead diced pieces of onion, red and yellow bell peppers in a sweetish sauce. Also had a small ramekin with what tasted like coarse ground salt and pepper in lemon juice - guessing it's a dip for the beef. I loved my meal and 4 of the 5 ranked theirs at least 8 out of 10. One in our party had the smallest bowl (still plenty) of beef pho (9/10) and the pork/rice dish (7/10). We spent decades in the SF Bay Area, so we have experienced a great variety of Asian foods from fancy establishments to hole in the wall places. That included lots of pho. The beef pho at Lemongrass Kitchen is as good as any we've had - a lot of flavor but light, not heavy or oily. Noodles done just right. Service was attentive and very friendly, primarily by Kenny and other family members including his dad. Had a great conversation with Kenny about their travels and setting up in Spartanburg about 5 years ago....right in the midst of the pandemic. All in all very enjoyable. 4.5 out of 5 stars. When you first walk in, it's a single small room with some beat up tables and bamboo on the walls. But, don't let the looks fool you into thinking you should run for the hills just yet. The menu is simple and small. The cashier was a gentleman who was very talkative and super helpful with explaining anything I had questions about. They had a ton of things that I wanted to try but my stomach wasn't all that happy with me that day. So I ended up going with a regular size chicken pho. It was steaming when he brought it out not even 6 minutes later and it was filled to the top with broth and the bowl was loaded with noodles and chicken. AND it smelled amazing. I wasn't able to eat all of it! But what little bit I did have was spot on perfect and super reasonably priced. I listened to other tables orders and it sounded like they were regulars. The cashier/server pretty much knew instantly what they always had and was really good at up selling for added in orders for them to take to go. S'burg has lots of great dining options nearby, but this cute place has plenty of regulars, a small but comfortable dining area and one of the coolest owners I've met in a long time. Coming from out west, I don't miss the politics and prices, but I do miss the food. This place is not just great by SC standards, this place would be great in the Pacific NW too. Bun Bo Xao Xa (Vermicelli bowl with beef) is so tasty! The marinated beef is the perfect offset from the cucumbers shallots and herbs, giving it nice balance. I had the Pho with beef the first time we visited, my wife got the glass noodles with shrimp. Everything was delicious! My mom and I have been coming here regularly since it opened in 2020. This is one of our favorite spots for lunch, and I can't recall ever having less than stellar service here. It's great for Spartanburg...but only OK for US-based Vietnamese pho. Ambiance was essentially diner style, which is fine..though it was kind of cold inside since it was cold outside and the drafts every time the door opened keeps you in a state of constant chill. The service was OK, but the server was a bit too familiar with my partner. The banter was not about the food and a little off-putting as I just wanted to have a hot bowl of pho to stave off the chill of the day. We ended up with a combo bowl of pho, a glass noodle dish, and a rice dish. The only complaint on the 'phood' was that the pho noodles were clumped together and stuck to the bottom of the bowl. I think that was due to the noodles being portioned into the bowls and stored ahead of time, relying on the hot broth to revive them. Also there was no discernible difference in the combo meats (tripe, tendon, steak, flank and balls). Frankly I don't think we got any tripe or tendon in the few pieces of meat available in the large order. Still the broth was great and it was fast enough that we could get on to our next event. Prices were good for the area, if a little high for what you get. read more
