Chincoteague was where I went to high school, and I lived there for five years. While planning my trip, I contacted a number of hotels and motels. The Seahawk Motel was the one that gave me the best rate. And so my reservation was made. Since I review mostly restaurants, I originally did not plan on a review of the Seahawk Motel. As a result, I did not take any photos. However, a number of attractive photos are featured on their web site linked below: http://seahawkchincoteague.com/ My drive from Norfolk took me about two-and-a-half hours. After crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, I drove at a leisurely pace until I made a pit stop at Stuckey's, located along Route 13 on the right in the town of Mappsville. I always stop into Stuckey's when driving over to the Eastern Shore. It makes for a nice rest area, and I always enjoy looking at their fireworks displays. I made a second stop at T's Corner in Oak Hall to top off my gas tank. This is where you make a right hand turn onto VA-175 East, also known as Chincoteague Road, and which leads directly to the island. The Wallops Flight Facility is located along VA-175. Formerly known as the Chincoteague Naval Air Station, it was acquired by NASA in 1959. I worked there during the summers while attending college. The name was changed to the Wallops Flight Facility in 1981 when it became part of the Goddard Space Flight Facility. About a little more than halfway along Chincoteague Road, I reached the John B. Whealton Memorial Causeway, which is more commonly known to the locals as the Chincoteague Causeway. It was rebuilt and completed in 2010. The original Causeway, which was in use during my high school years, stopped directly into downtown Chincoteague at Main Street. The new one stops at the intersection of Main Street and Maddox Boulevard, which leads directly to my motel, as well as to the Assateague Island National Wildlife Refuge. After reaching Main Street, I proceeded straight ahead along Maddox Boulevard. The Seahawk Motel is located less than a mile away on the right. It sports a colorful orange roof that is hard to miss. Across the street is the Island Creamery, which is Chincoteague's only homemade ice cream shop. It first opened in 1975 and is rated by another social media site as the number one ice cream shop in the United States. I meant to stop in, but it didn't happen. I'll be sure to do so during my next visit. The Seahawk Hotel is an old-fashioned Mom and Pop style motel, operated by Brenda and Carey Watson, both of whom are natives of Chincoteague Island. They treated me well and with a lot of hospitality. Outdoor amenities include a pool, shaded picnic areas with tables and chairs, a gas grill, a playground for children with swings included, bike racks, and plenty of parking for extra cars, boats, and trailers. Two-bedroom units and efficiencies are also available. The motel is also dog friendly. In fact, the operators have a friendly dog of their own, whose name is Abby, and who keeps a watchful eye on the office when they are off the premises. My room came with two Queen sized beds, cable TV, free WiFi. a microwave oven, a small refrigerator, and a coffee pot. My room was impeccably clean, and the bathroom was well furnished with clean towels. The beds were well made, and the one I slept in was more comfortable than the one I have at home. In fact, it was more comfortable than some of the beds I have slept in at a few higher end hotels elsewhere. Their window unit AC also cranked out a crisper level of coolness than my central air unit at home. As soon as I checked into my room, I unpacked and took a nap to rest up for my reunion, which was held at a local restaurant that evening. I slept like a baby, both during my nap and when I went to bed after the reunion. The Seahawk Motel has been described as a "no frills" motel. It actually contained more frills than I needed and used. I didn't even turn on the TV during my stay. Since I don't drink coffee, I didn't use the coffee pot. The Seahawk Motel provided me everything I could possibly want and ask for in a motel. I left early in the morning for my return to Norfolk. The proprietors hadn't arrived yet, so I dropped my keys in their mailbox, as instructed to do so. I drove straight home without any stops and arrived back to Norfolk in just a little over two hours. The Seahawk Motel provided me with a most relaxing overnight stay, and it will be my lodging of choice when I make my next trip to Chincoteague. In closing, I want to thank Brenda and Carey Watson for their warm and friendly hospitality, as well as for their exceptionally clean, comfortable, and well maintained accommodations.

Checked into the room and were pleased. The air con didn't seem to be working so Hubster went down to the office and an employee came to assess. He said he'll be back with a portable window air con and finished it in under an hour. It was amazing to come into a clean, cool room after a long , hot day. Location was great. We were in walking distance to Amarin Coffee Shop and Mr Whippy. We would've tried more places but we were only there for a day. We'd definitely come back to this place again!

It's now like staying at a beach house for the week. Not a hotel. But, personally I prefer that. It gives you a sense of privacy. They have streamlined the entire system. You don't have to worry about checking in, they have created a system where you just unlock the room. Like an Airbnb for anyone familiar with that. It's a cozy, wonderful, vacation spot. It's all good because the migratory waterfowl are here then and it is such an experience to watch them all rise up together in a great cacophony at sunrise. In the evening they return and move around in great flocks to settle down for the night. Once in a while eagles will swoop in and grab one which is quite a sight. Sometimes our extended family will need several townhouses and the big cottage to have our Thanksgiving feast of turkey and fresh local oysters. The Daisey's have a well stocked kitchen for everyone and are always helpful when the occasional need arises as it always does - a crib or something. The heated indoor pool is great for the kids - and adults. And you can't get any closer to the Park Entrance. Perfect for bicycles. This is our 25th year if that tell you how happy we are with The Dove Winds.

We reserved pretty far in advance (early February) and we mentioned that it was our anniversary. I didn't expect anything big, but I was surprised that there was no mention at all during our stay, even on our hand-written welcome note (found in all the rooms when you check in, personalized with your names). 2. We stayed in Sandy Dune on the third floor. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was large, but the shower was TINY. I'm pretty petite (5'3) and I thought the shower was tight. My husband, who is 6'1, definitely had a bit of trouble. The bathroom shower towels are also rather small. 3. Breakfast is served every day at 9:15am. I was a little surprised that it was so late and that there wasn't a wider range of times. For anyone looking to go on a 10am boat tour, Ben will tell you that you can make it, but you will definitely have to rush, because they won't serve you earlier than 9:15 and since everyone is seated and served at the same time, it's done as a very leisurely affair. 4. I woke up one morning with an allergic reaction to something - complete with a seriously swollen lip, hives, and difficulty breathing, and when I went downstairs and asked Ben if the inn had Benadryl or anything, he didn't seem very concerned (my face looked seriously deformed; I startled another guest). He checked the medical kit but it had nothing, and Ben's only suggestion was that I go to a pharmacy. I think he would have left it at that had I not pressed him for more information, such where I could go and if they would be open (it was 7am). I think it would have been more appropriate for him to offer to help a bit more, but in the end, I was fine. 5. Wifi is slow. This may be because the house was packed (22 people) and everyone seemed to be trying to use it at night. During the day it was better/faster. PROS 1. We arrived at around 11:30am, which is much earlier than 2pm check in, but Ben still showed us around the inn and let us drop off our stuff in our room. 2. FREE BIKES!! We used them every single day. They had many (at least 10) to pick from. We biked around town, to the beach, to dinner, along the trails on Assateague. Also, FREE BEACH TOWELS, SUNSCREEN, and DEET. I loved that nothing was locked up so we could get things whenever we wanted (no need to ask for permission or sign anything out). 3. The snack room, which was stocked with trail mix, homemade cookies and brownies, Keurig coffee, various teas, and a large pitcher of sweet iced tea and lemonade in the fridge. There were also plenty of clean plates, utensils, mugs, and glasses. 4. Breakfast was good. Every day you get a glass of OJ (no refills offered), hot coffee (with refills, if so desired) and a little fruit bowl to start. On the first day there was nut bread with butter and jam and an apple clafoutis (baked custard tart) with whipped cream and cooked apples. It was like dessert for breakfast; a little too sweet, but tasty. There was also one sausage and one strip of bacon per person. The second day, breakfast included a tiny little fruit jam tartlet and a crispy baked croissant, halved and topped with sauteed mushrooms, onions, and eggs and served with hollandiase sauce and cheese. The third day, breakfast was a savory herb scone with butter and a thick wedge of veggie omelette. 5. There is a beautiful garden/back courtyard area with tables and a fountain where you can eat/relax. There is also a chess/checkers table inside and multiple decks of cards.

There are at least four boats that go back and forth to Smith Island. The only restaurant? You guessed it, wrong again. There are other places. But, I'll still stay at the Paddlewheel because they do business the right way. Ju, do me a favor and don't come back. It will make it easier for me to get a room when I need one.
