3.5 stars. Stopped by here for lunch. I had their burger and thought it was just alright. Cheese costs $1 extra which is kind of odd. The fries are good. The ambiance is a bit dim but nice. I was recently in Dallas and had a burger for the same price that blew my mind. I've also had a number of burgers in the $10-15 range that were just superior to this burger. It just didn't feel like it was worth the price or a memorable burger. I would be interested in trying their grilled cheese if I wind up here again as they had interesting choices. read more

Apparently this place is known for their grilled cheese sandwiches. I pivoted and got the mac n cheese. This version had a three cheese sauce with roasted red peppers. Rich and creamy, it was a playful little dish, although it was borderline room temperature when I had my first few bites. The bar itself was staffed with friendly people and the draft list included some of Akron and Cleveland's more known craft breweries. Overall, it was a spacious layout that had a classy dive bar feel to it. read more

My mum and I went here on my birthday for some lunch thanks to the positive reviews posted here, and I'm really glad we did. When we walked in on a Thursday around 1 PM it was pretty quiet, but it was filled to the brim with people not too long after we sat down, so I guess we got lucky. Our server was nice and fun and the food was great. We started off with appetizers and drinks. Both of us got the Cosmo with the ginger liqueur, which was fantastic -- it tasted lovely, the ginger giving it a nice zing, and even after a meal that we were both very full from, we somehow a nice little buzz going on from the drinks. Appetizers were the fresh pitas with hummus, which was nothing too special but very nice, and the croquettes, which are mashed potato balls, breaded and fried, with this killer chipotle dipping sauce. The sauce really made those what they were. I'd take a vat of that stuff to just have hanging around at home if I could. Main meal was fish tacos for my mum (the server raved about them, and so did my mum after she tried them) and the grilled cheese with bacon and apples for me. It seemed a little off the wall for there to be apples on a grilled cheese, but not so off the wall that it didn't at least make sense. And it was really yummy -- the apples made it. Nice and sweet and crispy -- perfect textural difference and nice to add the sweetness to the otherwise fatty meal. Their homemade fries aren't too bad, either. My husband and I stopped in a few weeks ago on our way through town. Parking was convenient and close and the service was great. We ordered the mushroom dip as an appetizer and it was good but felt like it was missing something. I think it was supposed to have caramelized onions but you definitely couldn't taste those. Hubby got a burger which was not medium as ordered hut was decent. I ordered one of the grilled cheese-can't remember which. It was okay but nothing to write home about. This seems like a reliable place to grab a bite to eat but could benefit from a little seasoning/flavor to the food. The bread on the sandwich was tasty but was about the only flavor I could pick up. The tots needed some salt and pepper and maybe some paprika or something for a special little kick. read more

My party of seven arrived at 6 PM. We stood crowded at the entrance for 30 minutes before we were given a table. We ordered right away drinks from the bar, and our meals. 10 minutes later, the drinks arrived except for mine. I waited another 15 minutes and it was still not there. I asked the waitress where it was and she said we don't have that kind of liquor here (Southern comfort). I asked her why she didn't tell me it right away and she said she was busy. So I ordered something else which took another 15 minutes. As for food, it took an hour and 15 minutes for that arrive. That gave us 15 minutes to eat, pay our bill, and get across the street to the theater for a show. Very disconcerting since we allowed two hours for dinner, so that we would not be rushed. There was no apology from the staff. Oh, and I forgot about Starters. We ordered sauerkraut balls and tater tots, and they did arrive in a timely fashion, but we were not giving any plates for them, nor napkins. So we use the tablecloth as a napkin. Then, when our food finally arrived, we still had no napkins and no silverware and had to wait for those also. read more

We ate at the Lockview for the first time last night. Since it was a Sunday evening we had no trouble getting a table and we were able to park right in front. The beer selection is overwhelming - literally 6 paragraphs of beers listed on giant chalkboard walls above the bar! The wine list was pretty impressive too, there were at least 10 different reds offered by the glass and more offered by the bottle. There weren't as many whites offered by the glass but what they have is a nice sampling. My husband and I both had beer... a Canadian Unibroue Blanche De Chambly for me and a Bombshell Blonde for my husband. The beers were really good and our waitress, Wendy, helped us choose something we'd like. We had the fried pepperoni and Golden Krisp potato chips with Lawson's Chip Dip for appetizers. You know the crunchy bits of pepperoni on pizzas that get fried on the edges in an oven? The fried pepperoni appetizer is a basket full of crispy, salty, heavenly slices that are served with marinara sauce. I love the person who invented this dish! My husband craves Golden Krisp potato chips with Lawson's Chip Dip - we currently have 2 different types of Golden Krisp chips in our home pantry and 2 vats of Lawson's chip dip in the fridge. This appetizer was enjoyed just like we were home on the sofa, watching old stuff on the TV and drinking good beer. I should mention here that the 3 TVs within our line of sight were tuned to AMC, Turner Classic Movies, and another unidentified channel that runs old programming. The music selection was amazing and included artists like Louis Prima, Perry Como, and Billy Holiday. Thumbs up for the entertainment! For dinner I had the Mashed Potato and Cheese grilled - I added Goat Cheese. My husband had the Pepper Jack Grilled Cheese with Jalapenos. The sandwiches were fabulous! Tater Tots and sweet potato fries were our side dishes... everything was delicious! To top it all off I ordered Cinnamon Pop Tarts served with a caramel syrup drizzle and whipped cream. OMG... the hot pop tarts and cold whipped cream were divine!! I ate ALL of it! The only thing that keeps the Lockview from being rated 5-stars is the bright overhead lighting. I felt like we were in a cafeteria or a hospital. They did eventually dim the lights, however it was nearly 7:00 PM by that time. One other observation of note: none (I mean not one) of the waitresses had visible tatoos... nor were they scantily clad. My husband pointed this out to me. How refreshing! We LOVED our dinner at the Lockview, and Wendy took great care of us. We have already told our friends and family about our visit and will be back soon!! read more

I had a nice time at Lockview. As a bar, this is my kinda place. Full bar, extensive drink list, a couple tvs, and groovy music. The service was also perfect: efficient (even though it was a busy weekend night), personable, and the right amount of attentiveness. We also ate dinner at Lockview: -Mashed potato grilled cheese -Fried pepperoni -Beef with barley soup The fried pepperoni are good. The portion is gigantic for two people, and it really is just a crunchy version of your standard pepperoni. If you need a bar snack, I highly recommend these. However, if you're eating a full meal, you might want to save these for dessert because the salt and dryness of the pepperoni will make the rest of your meal very hard to taste. The beef and barley soup was fab. I did have to let my mouth settle after all the pepperoni, but once I revived my tastebuds, the soups was perfect. Thinner than a stew, with the same type of hearty flavor. I found the grilled cheese nothing to rave about. It was thinner than I expected and the potatoes were dry. The cheese itself wasn't gooey, but rather a bit cold. I'd personally pass on the sandwich next time and upgrade to a bowl of their rotating soup. Overall, I had a fun time at Lockview. I would recommend it as a bar where you can share an appetizer. read more

Lock view is a fun, old school restaurant with yummy grilled cheeses and a great beer menu. It's a little nugget of a place nestled in downtown Akron across the street from Lock 3. An easy , inexpensive place to enjoy dinner and conversation. Highly recommend it for the cool vibe and local eats. read more

Good food but very slow food service. We were a party of four and my brother in law saved a booth and ordered a hummus plate before all of us arrived. We ordered the grilled cheese all around; there are 13 varieties. The waitress was wonderful and prompt with taking our order and delivering drinks. Unfortunately, it took our asking after 45 minutes of waiting to get our hummus plate and 20 minutes after that to receive the grilled cheeses. The quality and uniqueness of the food prevented it from being a bad experience. Mine was goat cheese, artichokes, grilled onions and garlic. Others had portobello mushrooms, bacon and another had pesto. The sides were very well done - there were sweet potato fries, french fries and home fries. I'm not sure if I would go back again because of the service issue and also because of the limited number of items on the menu. read more

Please read this before eating at The Lockview. After eating at The Lockview, I was approached by a homeless man. I have had something like this happen many times before, and I am not naive. This man had tears in his eyes and said "I am homeless, I am cold, and I am hungry." I offered to buy him a meal if he'd sit down and eat it. He eagerly accepted. I walked him into The Lockview and sat him at the end of the bar. I walked up to the first waitress and asked what the cheapest meal was. She said a #1 is $6, I handed her $8 and told her to keep the rest and to please take care of him. The owner or manager walked up to me and asked if the guy at the end of the bar was with me. I said yes, I just bought him a meal. He said "that better be to-go, he isn't eating here." I asked why, especially because I paid for a meal for him. He said "I have kicked him out of here before, I know what you're doing, but you're feeding a stray cat. If I let that guy eat here, people won't think this place is cool anymore." So he compared a human being to a stray animal, refused to let a paying customer eat in his restaurant, and values being cool or trendy moreso than helping out his fellow man (a paying customer)... Lets just start with the fried pepperoni. Holy cow! Awesome does not do this justice. Definitely one of my top 5 foods ever. Just an amazing texture and flavor. The tater tots in dip with chop sticks were also great to start I had the standard grilled cheese, keeping it old school, and it was also great. I went goldfish but Id suggest you get the sweet potato fries as my colleagues did. Much tastier with a bit of cinnamon. Sadly this was a work lunch so no beers for us but the selection looks great. I've been to The Lockview three times, and it seems to get better each time I go. I think they must keep adding to the charm of the interior. On my latest visit, they had string lights along the ceiling, which I'd never noticed before. They're known for their wide selection of craft beers and their gourmet grilled cheeses. I think I've found my favorite grilled cheese...the #10. It's rye bread, dill havarti, pickles, and onions - perfection. As a side, it comes with goldfish crackers, but I would recommend an upgrade to sweet potato fries with powdered sugar. On my last visit - a Wednesday night - I also got tortilla chips with queso, and I have to say it's really good. It also happened to be dog night upstairs, so the trail of adorable puppies coming in and out added to its ever-improving ambiance. I always like this place. They serve gold fish crackers with the sandwiches. How cool is that??!! When I told someone I was taking them for grilled cheese they laughed. And like that old saying, "this ain't yo daady's grilled cheese!" These things are nice. My favorite...well all but the one with the pickle. Soups are always great and the spinach salad stands up by itself as a meal. Old fashioned cocktails, a beer list that changes all the time and is long and varied as hell. The Lockview pub-grub is sort of chic shabby. Worth noting as I was sitting at the bar finishing my foodie the bartender asked, "Can I tighten up that Tito's for yah?".... things are in a good place. My first go-round was a good one. Found The Lockview because I was in town to see the Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Akron Civic Theatre (another review). It's location is perfect for that area but The Lockview isn't going to tell many it's there. Lack of lighting at night, with only moderate lighting under its canopy, tells the tale. Either you're a local patron or the theatre calls. Upon entry? A basic, no frills pub that features a host of Grilled Cheese sandwich combinations. I had the #10#10 (havarti dill cheese, pickles, grilled red onions, and spicy brown mustard on onion rye bread). Tell me this. How would the bread that held all those great items be sooooo darned crackling, crunchy w/out being burned? That first bite was dreamy and the rest followed suit. Oh! The Lockview croquettes, too, were fantastic (deep friend mashed potatoes w/cheese balls). Because of the concert, the place was slammed but I got a single at the bar. Management could add a bartender as there was only one pouring and 3 - 4 barbacks working. She was too busy to make things very snappy quick. The Lockview is chic shabby smallish town eatin' and drinkin' for those who enjoy not much more than good pricing ($8 - $10 a sandwich) and some reliable foodies. My vote - get in The Lockview and get you some grilled cheese sandwich. read more

Setting foot in this place gave me instant deja-vu. Then I realized that I've been there many times before, as it was formerly The Lime Spider. Cool! The place had a great ambiance and a great vibe, as it always has. Cozy, with candles on the tables and just the right amount of lighting. Vintage lighted beer signs on the walls. Vintage photos of Akron. But, most importantly, they had one hell of a beer list! All of the selections were written on a chalkboard that stretched wall to wall above the bar. I was a kid in a candy store! And they had 32 oz and 64 oz. growlers to go, too. Bottles of domestic and foreign crafts, seasonals, local brews and rarer stuff, like the hard to find Founders Devil Dancer I kicked the evening off with. The service was prompt, super friendly and attentive. I took the option of ordering for both my boyfriend and I, since he was busy chatting it up with the boys from the band Limelight. (They were in town for a gig that night, directly across the street at The Lock 3 outdoor concert venue.) We got The Number Five - Goat Cheese Mixed with Diced Portobello Mushrooms, Caramelized Onions and Roasted Garlic, Topped with Swiss Cheese on Multigrain Bread. The sandwich arrived with a paper umbrella stuck in it and crispy, hot tater tots on the side. It was one of the best grilled cheeses I've ever had! Ooey, gooey and done to perfection! Gives Melt Bar and Grilled a run for their money! I don't frequent Akron often, but when ever I do again, I'll be sure to go out of my way to swing by The Lockview! Amazing place, never a bad experience. Our server, Taylor was a wonderful fun kid!! We had a relaxing time choosing our meal with great advice and a full understanding of the entire menu from Taylor. She was engaging and made us feel as if we were her only table. The other staff was fun as well, offering comments when I asked about the music playing. I had very high expectations of The Lockview after reading all of the reviews and hearing the name a few times. We came here for beer and dinner after visiting the Art Museum. I do like the area a lot so they've got that going for them. We sat at the bar, which was long and had plenty of seats. By 6pm every table was full in the place, but it wasn't overcrowded. It was calm and not a ridiculous wait like another grilled cheese place I know of in Cleveland. We started off with the appetizer special that was described as a stuffed portabella mushroom with mozzarella and peppers in a risotto ball served atop a spicy marinara. It was actually okay, but it a cheesy rice casserole sort of way. It was mostly all risotto and cheese with tiny pieces of mushroom that I don't think I tasted. The best part about it was the spicy marinara. I got a grilled cheese sandwich on Texas Toast, but didn't dive into anything crazy. I mostly just wanted the tots. I also noticed that they serve goldfish crackers as a side and Chips with Lawsons chip dip as an appetizer. I liked that. The decor was a bit weird and almost had a banquet hall feel to it with the black linen tablecloths. I feel like they are trying to find their identity and haven't done so successfully. All of the bartenders/servers wear black Lockview t-shirts which was boring. A lot of the atmosphere qualities were odd, but the service and food was good. 3 solid stars. They are currently holding a small party in the back. Don't know if they called in or are walk in but the service here is just bad. Didn't have anyone to seat us, give us menus or and water. It took them a while to get us appetizers and food (about 15-20 minutes from seating) and when I asked a lady working if I could have two menues to look at while we sit, she had a bad tone and just told me to wait and sit down. Luckily, our actual server seemed like a light and day difference. She was nice, kind, and catered to us in a fast and effective way. Overall not a bad experience, but would of loved some better service and attitude. read more

One word...boring. Came here on a Saturday because nothing else around was open. Got the Mac and cheese bites as an appetizer. They tasted like nothing. My mom got a American cheese sandwich which she said was nothing special. She had to pay extra to upgrade from gold fish to French fries....really gold fish crackers? I got the Panko chicken sandwich which also tasted like nothing. The best part was the pickles and red onions I requested as an add on to the sandwich. The star of the show was the French fries, although they came out completely unsalted they are fresh cut. So many better options, I would never come back. read more

Lockview for the $ is a much better option than Melt. I have had numerous of the sandwiches over the years and they have all been fantastic. I wish they had more beers on tap but there is a diverse bottle beer menu. The prices of the beer are not on the menu but the ABV is...I find that kind of odd. Overall though, this is a summer tradition. read more

A place for conversation, fun and simple food, good music, lots of beer selections and all around relaxing vibes. Lockview is not the bar for you to watch your sporting event at. Why? I love the concept, love the food and ADORE the service. I have eaten here three times and have not been disappointed once. Who can be sad when you have a choice of 13 grilled cheese sandwiches and plastic zoo animals in your martini? The servers are all young and attractive but still very friendly (which I find is a very Akron thing). I am a little disappointed that they are not opened for lunch on the weekends, but that does not make me love it any less. If you find yourself in Akron, Ohio at lunch on a weekday, you could do much worse than this place! And one more thing older and former Akronites... REAL LAWSON'S CHIP DIP! read more

You know you have gone to a great place when even road construction dont hinder guests from piling in. First time there and wont be the last. Service was excellent. Beer and margaritas were smooth and priced well. I got their special, a sloppy Joe grilled cheese. Took me straight back to my childhood of my mom making something similar. Perfect grilled bread. Hard to beat golden Krisp tater chips. The wife had pulled pork grilled cheese and it was crazy good. Music and ambience kept ya feeling good. What a treat before our concert across the street.
