Quality seems to have gone downhill this year. Denver steak was mostly gristle - when I complained to the waiter I was informed I was probably unlucky. Sea bass had fishy smell - they tried to cover it up with excessive balsamic vinegar. Kids fresh catch salmon - portion of fish seems half as big as last year but I still consider it a good deal. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants, especially for the braised beef ribs. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the chef changed or something else happened, but the food is nowhere near what it used to be. I ordered the Mary's chicken breast, grilled short ribs, and mac and cheese, and it was very disappointing. Everything was dry, lacked flavor, and definitely not worth the price. I used to rank this place as one of the top 2 restaurants in town, but after this experience, I honestly don't see myself wanting to come back. read more

Stopped by for a drink and an appetizer at the pavilion, which is on the patio beneath the lodge. Tater tots were hot and crispy and the dip was satisfying. The beers were cold and it was happy hour! We were really disappointed with our meal here. It's unfortunate because the ambiance was great and it's located right off a beautiful golf course, but for the prices they charge, our meal was not worth what we spent. The steak was underseasoned, overcooked, and probably the smallest portion of steak I've ever received from a restaurant. It was smaller than the veggies on the plate. The broccoli was so hard and undercooked, I couldn't stab it with my fork. Also not salted. The best thing on the plate was the twice baked potato, which is disappointing when you spend $46 on this plate. My friend's pasta was also an insanely small portion and also tasted really strange. It was a papardelle truffle pasta and the sauce tasted sweet...? Almost like a Thai curry in my opinion. If it was good, we wouldn't have minded the tiny portion but it wasn't and didn't come with a protein either. Our friend who got a burger and fries had the best meal out of all of us. The mocktails were also good. Honestly, I think this place needs to stick to pub food. That seems to be their strong suit. Service was okay. I understand they were busy. We were highly disappointed this time. We understand it's the holidays and places get overly busy, but at a fine-dining establishment such as this one, we should never have the the type of experience that we had last night. First of all, we had to keep asking for drink refills. I felt like we were bothering the staff every time someone asked for more water or soda. But the food took so long that all we could do was drink. At one point someone brought us a carafe of water. So we were happy about that. We were glad when the appetizers came out. Those were good! They were out of so many main dishes. My mother in-law ordered the fish special and the fish was so over cooked that it was hard. 2 of the 3 kids ordered their burgers well done and 1 ordered hers medium. All 3 burgers came out rare. My husband ordered his steak medium-rare and it came out rare, chewy, and lacked flavor. My chicken dinner (Mary's Chicken) was so salty, I couldn't even take more than 2 bites. My sister and brother in-law didn't enjoy their meals either, but i didn't get details. We all left there wishing we cooked at home. A few of us have been here for a week now, and after being snowed in, doing dishes for days, and just over being inside the cabin, we all really wanted to enjoy a nice dinner out. The manager was a nice guy and tried hard to make things right. And our server was hustling her tail off, but they were overwhelmed. My in-laws own a house in Tahoe Donner, so we're here often, and I'm sure we'll be back. Hoping for a better experience next time. read more

We had it an 80th birthday party for my brother at The Lodge on Saturday night, and it was a wonderful party. We had a private room and the service was extremely attentive and well-timed. I had a vegetarian entrée which was simply delicious. Marissa, our event manager, was one of the most attentive and flexible people I've had the pleasure of working with. Food was very good. I had the turkey meatloaf, wrapped in bacon. It was sitting on a bed of mashed potatoes, with several roasted carrots. Serving was probably enough for two people. Co-diners had a burger and the swordfish, which I think were fine. Restaurant is attractive and we were there on a Thursday evening. The joint was hoping. Very busy, however it appeared that there were more than a couple of empty tables, which led me to believe that maybe they were shorthanded, in terms of staff. Also, our table was a little neglected. My partner and I ate at the lodge on a Sunday, and although less than 25% of tables were occupied, service was slow. It took too long to get my requested 1/2 glass of ice, but finally the ice arrived filling the whole glass with little space for water. My partner complained that the water tasted of chlorine. We came early, at 5:30 pm, for the turkey meatloaf and after waiting for our order, we were told that no meatloaf was available. My second choice was shortribs, but were told that the shortribs were also not available . My third choice was the trout, but was told that they could not substitute the succotash which I do not care for. I wanted to order a soup, but the only soup available was the Elk soup which I also did not want to order. My partner finally settled for a poblano stuffed pepper but stated that it was bland and he had to add pepper to it. I was curious about the desserts offered, but when the waiter finally brought that menu, two of the four desserts had ice cream, and one was a sorbet, and there was only one other dessert offered, so we decided not to order any dessest. My conclusion was that it was an inadequately planned dessert menu. I DO NOT PLAN TO RETURN TO THE LOIDGE anytime soon even though I want to support TheLodge as a Tahoe Donner member. read more

A great lodge tucked away from tourist. Only knew of these fantastic spot because my cousins live a 1/2 mile away from there. Very nice ambiance and cozy, get there early for the happy hour, great prices on drinks and 20% off the yummy food options, service was exceptional and food is very good read more

So disappointing. We used to own a house in TD and enjoyed the lodge restaurant. Things have changed. Rather then 3 fish tacos you now receiving 2 tiny tacos for. The same price. The calamari portion is tiny. BLT salad lacked bacon and was tasteless. Burger with a brioche bun, did not have a brioche but but a stale tasteless croutons of a bun. Came in during the holidays, and the place was packed. Was seated pretty quickly in the bar area, ordered up some tasty libations, and was eager to try the meatloaf. Needless to say, it was great. This place is the best!! Conveniently located right next to Tahoe Donner, it's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. The restaurant has a cozy and relaxing ambiance, and all of the waiters and staff were super friendly. We really liked this place! Everything from the service, ambiance, and food were so good. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and forest mushrooms for apps and they were both really good. Me and a friend got the fish tacos for dinner which we could have shared as it came with three. They were pretty good as well. Another friend got the French onion soup which was super good. We were Airbnb guests at one of the cabins nearby and made reservations at the nearest place. Place exceeded expectations for a golf course restaurant. The very good: All the appetizers we ordered were so good. Fried Brussels Sprouts, fried calamari, shrimp and pork dumplings, and Forest mushrooms were all very delicious. My favorites were the Forest mushrooms and dumplings if I had to choose. The bar was set pretty high early on in the meal. The good: I ordered the Bulliet Manhattan and my partner had the blood orange old fashioned. Both were pretty good. Strong. I liked the Manhattan just a tiny bit better. The ehhh: main dishes. For our group of 9, half weren't too impressed with what they ordered. We guessed it might be because the appetizers were just so good we were let down. I ordered the short rib and was pretty happy with it. The people who ordered the risotto all said it was a bit undercooked. A couple people ordered the halibut special and didn't say much so looks like it was unremarkable. My brother ordered the skirt steak and said it was amazing. All in all, if I visited again I definitely wouldn't mind coming back for the appetizers and drinks! read more

Again another place I can't believe I didn't review! We go here about four times a year. Why only four, because it is a bit pricey. But for special occasions we treat ourselves to a nice meal from The Lodge restaurant and pub. I am particular to their fall menu because they have some great autumn feeling foods available. I am in love with their mashed potatoes! So they're offerings are limited, what they have available is great. We have always been thrilled with their short rib selection and chicken breast selection. Even during the closures of the pandemic it was very easy to order over the phone and still have a special meal at home for those special occasions. The Lodge is the staple upscale restaurant in Tahoe Donner. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, warm, and inviting. Good for families, groups, and celebrations. Highly recommend making reservations - even in the summer. The strong point is the food. Many restaurants claim "farm-to-table. organic, farm-to-fork." The Lodge locally sources all of their items and you can taste the freshness and quality from the beginning of the meal through the end. The bread was warm and fluffy served with room temperature butter. My wife's special seafood pappardelle was amazing. Rich cream that wasn't too heavy, seasoned well with a perfect al dente bite. My ribeye was a touch over medium rare and slightly over seasoned but was it was amazing. It was a solid 12-16oz cut. I would recommend getting the gorgonzola butter on the side unless you love the subtle taste of blue cheese on every bite. I would also sub in the mashed potatoes in place of the fries. Service left a bit to be desired. The food took a bit over 30 minutes to arrive. The restaurant didn't seem particularly busy yet our table sat with empty stacked plates for 10 minutes after several server and busser fly-bys. Check with cards sat on table for 10 minutes. It shouldn't take 15-20 minutes to turn a table when the guests are clearly ready to leave. Would recommend nonetheless. The quality of the food compensates for the few shortcomings. read more

Sorry I am just fed up! I am not reviewing the Lodges food but a ridiculous policy that on most weekends and Friday's they won't take "to go" orders! However,if you sit at the bar and order a meal to go that is ok. Wtf? There is no difference between ordering my food to go if I sat at the bar or over the phone EXCEPT that I would be forced (ok maybe guilted into ordering) a drink if I had to physically go to the Lodge to get a meal to go. What BS! Their reasoning is that the kitchen is too busy to do "to go" orders. Again Wft is the difference if I was there in person or over the phone. Just give me a time to pick it up. read more

Amazing food. Great service. Kinda book this place last minute, as other places in Truckee were fully booked, so not really much expectation here. However, the food blown us away. All dishes were very good to amazing. The short ribs were one of the best I've had, juicy, tender, nice crust on the outside. The service was also very good, and they also have nice wine selections. It's a little pricey, but still reasonable. One thing they could improve is probably to use nicer wine glasses to match with varietals, but besides that everything else were perfect. read more

The Lodge always delivers with good food and service. Full disclosure, I'm a Tahoe Donner employee, but I don't work at the Lodge. I always sit in the pub. The bartenders typically get nominated as Best of Truckee locally. Cocktail specials daily, and usually menu specials as well. For lighter fate, go with pub menu and apps. Mac and cheese is back by popular demand! On a recent trip my friend and I had a very good burger with excellent fries (which they split to 2 plates) a cheese and greens starter plate, and the short ribs - the latter tender, well seasoned, with fresh mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. Solid fare, upscale from the normal Truckee offerings. And great after a day outside. A word of caution - dinner entrees are not inexpensive. Both the pub and restaurant are well laid and inviting, whether you are family with kids, by yourself at the bar, or a couple looking for a classy night out. read more

This restaurant was highly recommended from our Airbnb host. We walked in greeted by 2 hostesses who let us know although they weren't seating outside due to weather we were welcome to sit at bar in pub. We put our name on the wait list for a table - sat at the bar for a drink. 30 minutes later after watching several people walk into restaurant and either get seated in bar or at restaurant we approached the hostess again. She said we could always order food at the bar. When we told her we preferred to have a table for dinner and asked her how much longer our wait might be we were told - all tables were full. We ended up leaving restaurant - as we were walking out the hostess approached us and said " I know this is last minute - but we might have a table now". This was after waiting app. 45 mins and seeing people randomly walking into the pub and sitting at any table they chose. To say we're disappointed is an understatement. This is our first time staying in Truckee. We've had amazing experiences thus far in every establishment but tonight we were treated very rudely. read more

We booked through open table and it ask if any special occasions I marked birthday and my wife pulled Dude to the side and told it was my birthday also. Reposting here from my google review: I want to preface this review by saying that the food and restaurant is really excellent, IF (and only if) you don't have food allergies! I have been coming here for years with my family, and every time has been really enjoyable. This year I found out I can't eat gluten, so when we dined here a few nights ago, despite informing my server and communicating with the manager about my gluten allergy, my food caused a strong reaction. The server didn't know which foods contained gluten, so I asked the manager and she told me anything that anything wasn't a noodle could be made gluten free. I clarified with my server that I would be ordering the short rib (because it was approved by the manager to be 'naturally gluten free'). He told me he would remind the chef that it's gluten free, but something on it (I suspect the sauce) contained gluten. Gluten hides in funny things like soy sauce, BBQ sauce, or sauce reductions of that nature... In summary: be warned dining here with allergens. I expected an organized and safe experience when dining with a nicer restaurant. It's definitely not a celiac friendly establishment, and for those with gluten sensitivity you can't be sure that the ingredients are 100% gluten-free. read more
