The Lone Chicharron was THE highlight of our trip to Seward (and that's saying something because we truly loved every stop in town)! Super fun atmosphere and fun music welcomed us, warmly! As someone who eats gluten-free, I was thrilled that the manager was incredibly knowledgeable and explained that just about the only item that wasn't gluten-free was the beer-battered fish. Talk about having options! We started with the Carne Asada and Carnitas tacos, and they were fantastic. But we couldn't stop there! We came back for a second round (they were just that good!) and tried the Vegetarian Elote tacos... and WOW. Major chef's kiss! It was also such a treat to enjoy authentic Mexican rice without having to second-guess whether it was gluten-free. But my absolute FAVORITE part of the entire experience? The habanero carrot hot sauce! It was unbelievably vibrant, fresh, and bursting with flavor. The perfect balance of sweet carrot and spicy habanero was pure magic, and I may or may not have wanted to take a bottle home with me! We enjoyed some tasty tacos at this place. The menu is pretty limited, but it covers all of the bases. Choose your meat and pick the format (taco, burrito, or torta.). We tried the Rockfish (light batter, excellent fresh flavor), Elote (nice version of this classic), Carnitas (deeply spiced, and nicely crispy) and Carne Asada (nice marinade and lean meat). My favorite was the Carnitas, but the rest were also very good. These are above average tacos this far north. The place is small but comfortable and they offer several Mexican beers. Overall, a solid fast-casual taqueria. The one thing it was missing were house-made chips, salsa, and guacamole. We didn't encounter guacamole frequently in Alaska, so perhaps it's difficult to get/expensive to source there. Service was friendly and the place was packed: when all tables were taken, we were informed that The Lone Chicharrón is attached to the adjacent bar, which had a pass-through window to the restaurant. We order drinks at the bar and the restaurant would pass our order through the window to us. Unfortunately I'd left my ID in our hotel, so was not permitted to enter the bar. Thankfully by the time we'd tried that, a table had opened in the taqueria and we were able to order drinks from The Lone Chicharrón instead. This little Gem is Amazing I almost hate to post this review letting people know how Wonderful the food & people are! They serve street tacos $4.50 each I had one fish & one pork and these were off the hook, best fish tacos besides my mothers & I would have to say a very close competition. We stopped in for dinner on a Tuesday evening in June. The kitchen was bustling, but they seemed short-staffed up front, which led to a long line out the door as people waited to order. What a fun little spot. Was in Seward for just a couple hours to check it out on my way to Exit Glacier and found this place. Was really happy with the service (kind and quick) and the tacos I ordered we're really good. I love sauce and salsa so when I saw they had a salsa bar, it made me happy. This great spot gets packed fast and seating is limited. The service is awesome, and we found out the same owners run The Cookery, so it's no surprise the service and food is top notch! We come here every visit to Seward, and this visit proved why we keep returning. The menu is simple and inviting with options for everyone in our family. This time we went with the Hot Rod (two tacos, beans/rice) and we love that you can get each taco with it's own filling. I got pork and chicken, little guy got pork in both, and teen and my wife both got the rockfish and pork. Plus we got a carne asada torta to share. The toppings are fresh, delicious and authentic, and the tortillas are fabulous. The rockfish is lightly breaded and juicy and crisp. The chicken had great flavor. The pork also had great flavor but was dry, and needed some of the fresh salsas they have to try (the garlic salsa is awesome on everything!). The steak torta was amazing. My youngest son and I found the beans much too spicy ( I like a kick but it was too much for me) but the other two loved them. The rice was fine but we all agreed it was a bit plain/lacking favor and needed the salsas to liven it up. This is a "order then sit and eat" place, and you bus your tables when you are done. The salsa bar is a bit hidden in a corner by the door so make sure you look for it and give all the flavors a try. Great atmosphere and the fresh, authentic flavors are a true find here in Alaska and you should NOT miss this stop! read more
