Really wanted to like this place based on the menu we saw online. No one greeted us. We waited easily five minutes before we saw a single staffer. She was unfriendly. No smiles. Soft spoken and hard to hear. Water station was out of water and she never filled it. She did bring us glasses of water but no refills and other customers seemed um pleased to find the water dispenser empty. Food tasted anything but Mexican. Flavors were either bland or more Euro than Mexican. Quesadillas ($18.50 basic; $25 for my blackened "halibut" which had a few flecks of fish in it) were tiny, nearly flat, and were so little to eat compared to the "burritos" that seemed to weigh 4x the quesadillas for the same price. The burritos were really just wraps. Weird flavors. Not Mexican flavor in site. The salsas were ok, not great. Chips were store bought and cardboard like. Customers seemed confused, looking for water, napkins, and any service whatsoever. Four of us ate for just under $100 with no beverages. Serious mistake. We came and ordered the blackened halibut burrito ($25) and chicken nachos ($18.50). Arguably some of the worst food I've had in alaska, and I've been traveling the whole state for two months. The burrito had almost no halibut....tasted like nothing. Like burnt tortilla crisp. Chicken nachos tasted like a kids lunchables meal.....with CRUMBS of chicken. They ran out of beans and hoped we wouldn't notice. I was visiting Seward a few weeks ago and had one of the worst dining experiences. I got in a bit late (~9pm) and most restaurants were closed save for this one and a few others. Mexican food sounded good after a long drive, so we went in and waited at the counter for service. After a few minutes an employee shows up and simply stares at me. Not even a "hello." Ok I'm willing to cut some slack, maybe it's been a bad day or a rough dinner service, but it was a bit awkward. Ordered burrito bowls ($16 each - beans, rice, salsa, chicken). A bit on the pricey side for counter service Mexican food, but it's Alaska and they're one of the few places open. I can forgive. Food arrived and the portions were tiny! Tasted pretty average, but then I realized that the kitchen had forgotten the beans in the burrito bowl. We went to inquire and were told that they were out of beans. Um ok. That would have been nice to know when we were ordering or when they realized they were out. Instead they just hoped that we wouldn't notice that a significant portion of our $16 meals was missing. Nothing was offered to us to compensate. We had to *ask* if the missing food could somehow be made up for. Ended up getting some chips comped (~$4 value). The attempt at defrauding us really left a bad taste in my mouth. We are born and raised AK folks who moved away about 4 years ago. The Halibut/rockfish burritos were & still are our favorite food here in Seward! My favorite salsa was always the Aloha. This time I got the chipotle salsa and it was also delicious with a little more heat! read more

We were visiting Seward and were looking forward to some Mexican food- unfortunately, this did not hit the spot. The woman who took our order asked my father (who has a slight accent) to repeat himself numerous times, and then laughed and called up a different coworker, who was also laughing. I inquired what was funny and my question was blown off. The food was extremely overpriced; we paid $94 for a meal for 3 people. This would have been understandable given the tourist season and comparable restaurant prices..if the food had lived up to the price. Our meals consisted of black beans that seemed to be poured straight from the can (no seasoning, not cooked, nothing), nacho cheese that was not melted, a quesadilla so undercooked that the tortilla was floppy and the cheese was still shredded, and chicken that was sent back to the kitchen for being pink. The house sauces honestly tasted like marinara with some spices in it. I am not usually one to roast an establishment like this, but I wish I had seen a review before walking in and having such an experience. read more

Absolutely disgusting First and last time I will ever eat there. The nachos itself was horribly made with about a spoon full of meat that tasted like it had been sitting for awhile so we literally only ate the chips with salsa because the salsa was actually decent had I known I would have just ordered chips and salsa for $3. Not to mention the nachos were priced at $14 so Ofcourse you'd think there would be enough for two people to munch on... completely thought wrong there was probably enough to feed a five year old. It does the job when you're a vegetarian in Seward. But it's mediocre and pretty bland food. We ordered the kids bean and cheese burrito and the tofu and veggie one. They were both bland. But then again we're a far cry from Mexico here in Seward. The salsas were ok--some Tasted like marinara with heat added. Staff did not wear masks at all and were short in their replies. Not as good as the overall ratings suggest. Reasonably good burritos and quesadillas, but a bit pricier than indicated. They were out of rockfish, and the halibut tacos and burritos were $13.08. Halibut was expensive everywhere in town, but for the small amount in their tacos, it can't cost them much. In other words, a cheap eats place that wasn't cheap, and didn't have the seafood listed on their menu. Eliminate halibut and rockfish, and you're onto the usual chicken and pork found at any mexican place, though things like blue cheese add character. They do have a good selection of salsas to choose from, as well as numerous hot sauces. Their menu is imaginative with variety and unexpected ingredient combinations. The atmosphere was lacking (a tiny place, and the few tables there weren't cleaned off, despite things being a little slow). Frankly, we went here because of good Yelp reviews and were disappointed -- it didn't live up to them. I'd say set your expectations appropriately and enjoy quality burritos and tacos with a local flair -- but don't expect much in terms of atmosphere, and don't expect cheap eats - it isn't. read more

My family of three were dying hungry and being vegetarian were looking for options. Found this Mexican place near my hotel and thought of giving it a chance as our experience with previous Mexican in Anchorage was awesome. But soon we realized that all the glitters is not gold. This was one of the worst burritos we ate, I chose to stay hungry but could not finish the terrible burrito. Tortilla itself was overdone, dry and tasting weird, rice was uncooked, beans tasted old, salsa was pathetic and watery. Nothing was fresh, Guac they give a packed Kirkland box which you see in Costco. This is what you get in $20. Would never suggest anyone to set a foot in this place. read more

Late on a Sunday night this place was a lifesaver. All the fancy places were closed or had dine-in only. This little burrito joint was fast, convenient and tasty. The aloha salsa was surprisingly good. The burritos themselves were okay, could be hotter (we ordered extra hot, but would classify the end product as "mild"), but it was good satisfying fare after a long day of sightseeing. However, the type of beans they use are too strong and it detracts from the flavor of the halibut or the chicken. This place is behind a gas station. Skip this place and walk across the street to Chinooks. Went there last week hoping for a beer and a fish burrito. Place had three groups of two and one individual all seated without food. Everyone seem kind of annoyed but I didn't think much of it. Ordered a rock fish burrito and was told the keg of Pacifico was out, so my only choice was Dos Equis Amber. Not a problem. I was told they'd be poured shortly. About 15 minutes later, the one individual asked about her order and was told it was almost out. Shortly thereafter her food was brought out, she complained it was completely wrong and had waited an hour and wanted a refund. I enquired about our drinks at this time and was told they'd pour them after they helped the gal who waited and received the wrong food. After she left, service disappeared without pouring our drinks. Next time I saw someone I asked about the beers. Finally they were poured. About 10 minutes later another couple told us they'd been there for 45 minutes with no food after ordering tacos and nachos. They had asked for a refund as well. About another 10 minutes (35-40 minutes at this time) another group had received their food. Suddenly, we received an order of nachos we hadn't ordered. These looked rather suspect, as they were store bought cheap tortilla chips covered in Circle K cheese sauce topped with a grey meat. At this point we requested a refund. The they debated this with us and told us our food was almost out. Alas, the food came out and was mediocre at best. Out of the giant burrito, only one or two pieces of discernible fish was to be found and the burrito mostly contained lettuce, cheese, beans and sauce. Others are quite right -- by Lower 48 standards, this would be a rip off in terms of what you get for what you pay. However, having compared a heck of a lot of Seward menus, they genuinely are one of the cheap eats in town. When it comes to eating, Seward in general beats Manhattan for prices. Moreover, although you won't get a lot of fish for your buck, you'll get plenty of good spice and you'll be full. Plus, you cannot beat these beer prices. There is no cheaper in town, and all three we had were ice cold and a good head. The lost star is because the dude serving us knew nothing about any of the beers on tap. He completely mis-answered my questions, and I found a brew I liked by total accident (ie, my wife ordered it). On the other hand, all of their taps go well with their food, and it's a decent pint, so no biggie. read more

We popped in for some quick tacos after a hike to Exit Glacier and wow, wow, wow! The fish tacos were epically delicious! We had both halibut and rock fish and they were equally delicious! The shells have the cheese melted onto them on the griddle and the fish is blackened beautifully! To top it off there is a selection of amazing fresh salsas and tacos sauces. It is so good! The have lots of choices for burritos and quesadillas too but I am lover of tacos and this place delivers! Sorry no photos we ate them too quickly! read more

I have been wanting to try this place ever since reading a review of the best fish tacos in Alaska. This was the restaurant that was listed as having the best fish tacos in Seward. And it definitely didn't disappoint! I had the rockfish tacos with the house salsa and they were great. My only complaint was I wanted more fish in them. I was also able to split the blue moo burrito with my boyfriend and I think that was even better than the tacos. The blue cheese and steak was a great combo. Also tried their pineapple salsa and that was awesome, totally get that! read more

**please don't eat here**I was highly disappointed in my experience. I got the Jeffery's special in a burrito and it was terrible. The shrimp tasted and smelt fishy. Shrimp should never smell like fish. Not to mention I only found about 4 shrimp the size of nickels. My friend got the chicken salad and had less than a hand full of chicken on the side. I will not be returning or recommending this to anyone. Literally Taco Bell does it better. Kirkland's personal sized guacamole and Kirkland reindeer dogs in the reindeer burrito. I love the guacamole when I have it at home but I don't come to a "cantina" to have store made guacamole. Just PLEASE DONT EAT HERE. read more

What a great mexican meal on the go. The interior is yellow walls filled with fartalicious hot sauces along with funny pictures. There is a blackboard with choices of burrito, tacos, quesadillas, and desserts. Get a beer if you like, there is a cooler filled with bottles. You order at the counter and the food is delivered. I got the Greek burrito that comes with feta, falafel, lettuce, tomato, onion and raita dressing. I chose the pineapple ginger salsa for the chips. My friend got the blackened halibut burrito that has tomatoes, lettuce and a few other yummy things, and chose the chipotle salsa which has great kick. The food, along with the service, never disappoints and is consistently great. It's hard to go to other venues since this place is such a winner. Food is under $10, which is a wallet perk. read more

I don't agree with rating a place in terms of "well, everywhere else this would be terrible, but since it's...XX town." If you advertise as Tex-Mex and you can't even pull of nachos; something's very, very, wrong. These were SNACK BAR nachos at best. I ordered steak nachos, billed on the website as: "Chips covered with Chicken, Steak, or Reindeer shredded cheese, onions, tomatoes, salsa, sour cream, and topped with Ortega Bueno cheese sauce." What I received was: Bulk, low-end, chips combined with shredded meat, no shredded cheese and no sour cream. Granted the meat was good quality, the flavor was nonexistent. As in, if you closed your eyes and took a bite the only reason the you could distinguished the meat from the really bad queso sauce was texture. No change in flavor. For the price, skip here, go the Chevron on the next block, get three times the same quality nachos for the price including hot dogs thrown on top for flavor. read more

I really want to try the black'n'blue chicken burrito. Seriously, I really want to. I'm not joking. It's cheaper than the blackened halibut burrito, so I should want to save a couple of dollars and eat it instead. I've even heard that it's really good. The problem? The blackened halibut burrito is so amazingly delicious that I just can't bring myself to eat anything else. I literally make the choice to spend the extra $4 for halibut EVERY SINGLE TIME. They have a wide variety of hot sauces and salsas to choose from, and every single one is delicious. To everyone complaining about his halibut being expensive and the portions being too small, try buying halibut at the grocery store and getting full for less than $13. At $19/lb for the fish alone, you won't do it. I guess it's news to you that seafood is expensive. At any rate, this place totally rules. I only wish it was staying open this winter. read more

We motored into Seward and asked one of the locals where the best place is to eat in town. He recommended the Railway Cantina and he was right!! We split the Roasted Garlic Quesadilla and it was EXCELLENT and plenty for two to split. If you are ever in Seward.... we HIGHLY recommend the Railway Cantina. DO NOT GO HERE IT IS A TOURIST TRAP! Background: I moved to Anchorage over 18 months ago and realize that Alaskan is not world famous for its Mexican Food. Regardless, I have found numerous restaurants in Anchorage that I approve of and one that would be comparable with restaurants in major cities in the lower 48. With all of that being said, Railway Cantina was by far the worse restaurant I have eaten at in Alaska over the past year +. Not only did it take 30+ to prepare a simple burrito, but Railway Cantina failed to get my order right. I ordered a double meat ($3 extra) reindeer burrito and got a burrito with no meat let alone double reindeer. With the signs advertising Mexican Food and beer I was not only excited, but optimistic. I left feeling like a little kid that was told that the tooth fairy was not real by his parents and without any money under his pillow (After spending $17). This was actually the worst burrito I've ever had in my life. Seward is a tourist trap, so I figured it was safe to go with the reindeer burrito. Big mistake. It was a wrap stuffed with rice and a chopped up hot dog that appeared to have been toasted in a panini press. It was as if someone raised in isolation had come across a description of a burrito in a book and tried to make one based on that alone. The sauces were similarly odd.
