The Lost Inferno is a tiki bar in San Clemente that is themed around the classic 1980s movie "The Goonies". It is a drinks-only bar for now, so eat before coming. Their website teases that food is coming soon. It is a fairly small place and I would definitely recommend making a reservation on Yelp. If there are no reservations available when you want to visit, they also have a Yelp live waitlist. The building has its own parking lot with about ten spaces and is shared with the sushi speakeasy upstairs. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Sunday night, and luckily there were still quite a few spaces available. A half hour later, the place was packed. The outside of the building is not marked. Enter through the red double doors in front, walk to the right, and the entrance will be easy to spot. Seating options include eight seats at the bar, four high-top tables in the main area that seat four people each, and a slightly raised grotto area with one four-seat table and two two-seat tables. We often like to sit at the bar, but I reserved a table in the grotto so we could get the full experience and I'm glad I did. The interior has great décor with a mix of tiki and pirate ship elements. The walls are wooden plank, with cargo netting, ropes, and tiki lights above. The walls have portraits of Goonies movie characters. Take two steps up to the grotto area, and you are inside of a cave with skulls, shells, and treasures embedded in the cave walls. There is also a small waterfall in the corner. Scan the QR code on the table for the cocktail menu. It is colorful and many of the drinks have names tied to The Goonies. Each drink also has zero, one, or two skulls next to it to indicate the booziness factor. They have quite a few original cocktails as well as classic tiki drinks, a few mocktails, spirits, beer, and wine. I started out with the Ash Landing (Hamilton Pot Still Blonde Rum, Hamilton 86 Demerara Rum, Hamilton Pimento Dram, Angostura Bitters, Pineapple, Lime, Ginger, One Skull booziness, $14). This was definitely a little on the boozy side, with good ginger flavor and the pineapple and lime in the background. She started out with the One-Eyed Willy (Pou Vodka, Lychee, Guava, Coconut, Sweet & Sour, $15, keep the mug for $65). It is rare that a vodka drink is my favorite of the night, but this was both of our favorites. It was very balanced and juicy, and not boozy at all. The guava, coconut, and citrus from the sweet and sour were all there. We bought the mug, and they bring you a new one in original packaging. The purchased mug is colored a little differently (blue instead of black) than the mug the drink is served it, but it still looks great. While walking around taking pictures, I ran into our server and mentioned that it was my girlfriend's birthday. He kindly brought us some shots on the house. He said it was a recipe they had for shots during Halloween, and it tasted like a spin on a kamikaze. It was very good and much appreciated. I have a hard time resisting a cool mug, so for my second drink I ordered the Slick Shoes (Planteray Pineapple Rum, Worthy Park Rum, Bounty Dark Rum, Strawberry, Papaya, Lime Juice, $17). It is served in a cool sneaker mug with a flaming lime half on top. It was nicely balanced and just a tiny bit boozy. It had a nice light fruit flavor, not overly sweet at all. I think it is sometimes served in a regular glass, so if you order it, be sure to ask for the sneaker mug. Her second cocktail was the Never Say Die (Producer Mezcal, Kiwi, Lemon, Mango, Grilled Pineapple, $14). The smokiness of the mezcal was on the hairy edge of being too smoky for me, but she loved it. She could taste the kiwi and mango. We shared one last drink, the Garden of Eden (Papa's Pilar Blonde Rum, Lavender, Lemon, Elderflower, Cucumber Bitters, One Skull booziness, $17). It had an interesting (good) floral flavor profile, and didn't strike me as boozy at all. I could definitely taste the cucumber notes from the bitters. There was good 80s music playing in the background. It's a Goonies themed bar, I get it, but we would have enjoyed a few tiki songs in the mix too. There is one unisex restroom out in the lobby area. It is nice that they also themed it with wooden plank on the walls and ceiling, and some nautical décor. Daniel was our server and was very friendly and provided great service. Thanks again Daniel for the birthday shots! Bartender Felipe also delivered one round of our drinks and was also very friendly. All of the drinks were good and there are definitely more on the menu that we would like to return and try. We had a real fun time, thanks Lost Inferno!

This is a very small tiki bar in San Clemente attached to a sushi restaurant. It's Goonies-theme is on point! The decor is absolutely amazing!! The drink menu is great with excellent tasting drinks. Menu is small bites that were good- sliders were excellent, but dumplings were okay. It is very loud inside and hard to hear the people in your party. The seats are nice aesthetically, but uncomfortable to sit on.

    One eyed Willy Slick shoes

Shoe drink was great One eyed Willy was super sweet and didn't taste like it had any alcohol Worst painkiller of my life. So so disappointed. Was super excited to check this spot out! Could have just been an off night for the bartender but did not feel any of the tiki vibe we are used to. :(

This giant pirate themed tiki mug is available for purchase.

The Lost Inferno is so much fun! As a tiki bar enthusiast, I've visited this spot many times over the years and they never disappoint. Tucked back in an unassuming tiny strip mall in San Clemente, you wouldn't even know it's there. There's not much parking except a few spots in the lot out front and on the street. I highly recommend reservations if you're planning to visit. This Goonies themed spot transports you to a dark pirate ship with photos of characters from the 80s movie adorning the walls. The drinks are always top notch and the service quick and friendly. No food available so plan accordingly. So much fun to bathe in nostalgia while sipping on a drink that they light on fire right in front of you!

Goonies never say die! The Lost Inferno is such a rad spot, perfect for tiki nerds and Goonies-lovers alike. Go for the perfect theming, stay for some seriously well-crafted cocktails. Service was great, even on a busy weekend. And of course the ambiance is like kicking it with One-Eyed Willie himself.

We had a great time here. We scheduled this in advance (they are pretty booked), so it's not really a last-minute thing, but it was a great visit for some drinks after dinner. It's a little challenging to find it, it's located inside a sushi restaurant. But look for the tikis outside, and you'll know you're at the right place. The bar is creatively decorated in the tiki/goonies style. The QR code menu had plenty of drink choices. Drinks are a bit pricey, but it's kind of a destination rather than a place to go to drink a lot. It would have been nice if they had some dessert options like a slice of cake or something. We would definitely come back next time we are in San Clemente

Ambiance: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Food: n/a Drinks: 4/5 Price: 4/5 Parking: 4/5 Friendly, welcoming, and a team who went above and beyond! We visited on a Saturday evening with a reservation. The theming was nostalgic and incredibly on point for die hard "Goonie's" fans. Daniel was primarily who helped us, and he did fantastic. Ryan made us his own creation, and it was so personable for him to bring the drink over and talk about it with us. Only wish there were some small bites on the menu to compliment the strongly crafted cocktails. Loved the experience and can't wait to visit again down the road!

The Lost Inferno is a good neighborhood tiki bar. You have to look to find it. But once you do, it is a small establishment with servers who are happy to help you decide what drinks you might like. We came during a slow season and did not need a reservation at 5:00. My Navy Grog was a bit too citric for my preference, and the server graciously gave me some simple syrup upon my request. While they do not serve food, we were told we could bring in food from other places. Next time, we will probably bring something in from Sonny's which is almost next door. I was impressed with the large number of different rums which they have on site.

Great atmosphere (Goonies style) and we loved the cocktails. We were fortunate enough to be seated in the grotto. It's small and quaint. Just a fun experience!

The lost inferno is a Goonies themed speakeasy in San Clemente. It was actually difficult to find this place as I had no idea it was located in the restaurant Momoku. They do have a yelp waitlist but recommend reservations by all means. I also recommend reservations for the grotto area as it has a pirate water fountain and very intimate. Perfect for a date night. Otherwise upon entry you are transported to a whole other world. It is Goonies inspired and so epic! The menu is also on a treasure map via QR code and the drinks truly are phenomenal. They have skulls listed to tell you the strength of the drink and I thought that was creative. All the cocktails were also reasonably priced between $14-$18 they also had a ship fishbowl which requires 2-3 sailors for $36. My favorite cocktails were the truffle shuffle, the horchata colada and the zombie. The zombie for sure packed a punch! Heads up don't come here hungry as they have no food just phenomenal drinks! Otherwise bartenders/service was on point for a Friday night. Brice was so kind and had great recommendations.

First Time Here If you are wanting a fun place to try, make a reservation or walk in. It makes you feel youthful coming into a hidden tiki bar that transports you into the Goonies movie. The drinks can be super sweet but super strong. Us moms had a lovely time and it's a must try for a fun night cap.

Every detail is speaking to the theme. Cool interior with a grotto. Several different options for drinks at one location, but this is so much fun. If you love Goonies, this is such a must visit. Everyone is super nice and the drinks are completely unique and yum.

    Stephanie T.

This was a Goonies theme speakeasy. I took some pictures so you can check it out. They did a good job with it I thought. They had a good selection of drinks, even non alcoholic drinks as well.

Ask the Community - The Lost Inferno

Where's the best place to sit? I have reservations for the grotto but is there a better place to sit?

Depends on the experience you are looking for. I haven't sat in the grotto yet, but I imagine it's like sitting in the caves the Goonies went through. I think it's a nice experience no matter where you sit.

Is it 21+? Or can a 20 yr old enter without drinking?

Hi! We are currently 21+ only at this time.

    Are children allowed?

Hi! Not at the moment, but once we have our kitchen up and running we are looking to allow children for the day time on weekends!

    Are dogs allowed?

I don't know for absolute certain but I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

We have reservations in the grotto, can we order food there also?

I don't believe they have added food to their menu yet. Plan to eat somewhere else before or after.

    Is there any food here?

We have food upstairs at our speakeasy - Momoku No Usagi. We are almost ready to serve food, but not quite yet. You're most welcome to bring food in. We recommend Sonny's or Pizza Port nearby.

After a farewell dinner to/at Gulliver's Prime Ribs Of Beef, our party of six continued the evening several miles away at Stowaway for some light bites and libations. Personally, I was all about the Hawaiiana tiki culture and tried to live it every day. Founded by co-owners Leonard Chan and Dominic Iapello, its current home of barely three years in a former dive bar came about when they unceremoniously had to leave the original location. With its proximity to Disneyland's Enchanted Tiki Room and the very niche underground-like society of tiki culture, they found their footing with a consistent customer base and the thrill of island escapism through colorful cocktails, pleasurable pupus, and tropical trimmings. Would I stow myself away somewhere inside and never leave!? PURCHASE(S) Don Q Punch Bowl ($38.00): Made with Don Q's Cristal Silver, Anejo, and 151 Gold Rums, respectively, peach brandy, passion fruit, pineapple juice, and citrus juices, this flaming concoction was rumtastic in every way possible as the tropical juices just made it that much sweeter. There were more ice chips than I liked, but it was a fun trough to drink out of for the four of us who wanted to imbibe. Coconut Shrimp 6pc ($12.00): Breaded and flash-fried plump shrimp served with a sweet chili dipping sauce, these were tasty and perfectly paired with the Don Q cocktail I was drinking. Stowaway Fries ($17.00): Constructed with a pile of crisp golden spud sticks, rum braised pork, and topped with a hearty gravy and sunny-side up egg, this loco moco fries dish was slamming while the slightly charred juicy pork had me squealing with enjoyment. SERVICE We had reservations, so once our entire party arrived, they quickly seated us in a cool cave-live separate alcove for more privacy. Our server arrived with menus, suggestions, and glasses of water. Minutes later, we all ordered at once, and everything (drinks and food) arrived within ten minutes. Because we had another reservation inside the same bar, we informed our male server and to let us know when we were allowed to go there. All was casual, chill, and somewhat on island time - aloha and mahalo! PARKING (FREE): They shared a medium-sized private lot with several other businesses who were closed at this time with plenty of spots - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Located within a strip mall, you opened the front door and walked into an island oasis as if you were a cast member on "Gilligan's Island" with thatched roof material above you, tiki statues displaced on all of the volcanic-looking walls, collections of tiki mugs past and present for purchase, a central square bar with plenty of stools, and seemingly small dark nooks and private spaces where naughty things could happen. No natural lighting whatsoever while an assortment of extremely low-lit electric lights barely guided you along. There were no TVs while I recalled various styles of music played in the background along with chatter and clamor of conversations in all directions. ATTIRE Although I was actually dressed appropriately for the occasion in an aloha shirt, linen pants, and flip-flops, this place was totally casual, so a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops would suffice. OVERALL I had a cowabunga time at Stowaway, and I couldn't wait to return to try more of their awesome-soundling elixirs. I loved tiki bars, and although this was generally out of my range, I'd make a special trip or two here. My one drink was lip-smacking good, the pupus were yummy, the prices were reasonable enough, the atmosphere was stupendous, and the service was friendly and professional. While the drinks menu was loaded with tropical cocktails, an impressive rum selection, and a decent assortment of local craft beers, the food menu was somewhat limited. And, the bar had happy hour TU-FR 4pm-6pm. Plus, I always preferred to support small local mom & pop businesses. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $75.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). Just very very casual and not totally comfortable. Food- 3.4/4 out of 5 - I got the Luau plate and LOVED the chicken!! Everyone else was right- that chicken thigh deserves its own plate. I also really enjoyed the coconut pudding/jello thing that came with it and the sausage link. The pulled pork was just okay, not very well seasoned but not bad. The side of "dressed greens" was just some lettuce without dressing on it, and I thought the macaroni salad was fine. The last thing that really disappointed me were the sautéed veggies :/ they were just soo oily and had no seasoning to them at all. I didn't eat any of them or the un-dressed 'salad'. My husband got the chicken katsu plate, he said the chicken katsu was fine but the fries on the side were cold and not crispy, they were kind of chalky in the mouth and didn't taste fresh. Some parts were definitely a 3/5 but my chicken thigh was so good and the portions are *huge* so I feel like they deserve a 4/5? All in all, I think I'd come back if I wanted to go out with someone but save some money and we'd split one of the plates (the portions really are huge).

My one drink was tasty but just didn't hit the right spot, the onion rings were very good, the prices were a tad elevated, the atmosphere was awesome, and the service was friendly and professional. They had an extremely limited menu, and there was some doubt whether or not ordering from the Stowaway menu was an option. Plus, I always preferred to support small local mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $27.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

The service was stellar as always, and so was the ambiance. My niece had a fun and unique experience for her 21st birthday!

The best part of Strong Water is the immersive experience you feel sitting inside. We sat in the Captain's quarters which was an intimate spot for great conversation. Our waiter was very friendly and gave plenty of options. We opted for the Crispy Tuna Appetizer which unfortunately was not good at all. The tuna and toppings were okay but the crispy rice tasted like fried fair food almost with the texture of a rice cake. Hopefully, their other dishes are better. For drinks, the waiter helped select the Banana Batida for me which was very lovely! I love how customized the recommendations were. My partner ordered a rum drink which he enjoyed as well. We finished off with a brownie dessert. I really enjoyed the passion fruit puree and kiwi topping. The brownie tasted good but was very dense which isn't my preference. Overall, would recommend. Prioritize the drinks over the food in my opinion

The…read morebar is spotless, the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. Our bartenders Liam and Omar were fantastic. They were knowledgeable, friendly, personable, and never missed a beat. For drinks, my boyfriend ordered the Zombie and the Guanko Grog, while I enjoyed the Chi Chi Royale and the Nui Nui. Every cocktail was perfectly balanced, beautifully crafted, and deceptively strong. Royal absolutely nailed it. We started with the Spam Musubi, which was delicious. It was so flavorful that it didn't need any extra soy sauce, and we appreciated that it was cut in half for sharing. Later, we ordered the Poke Bowl. It's a bit more salad-forward than a traditional poke bowl, with plenty of fresh greens, but the flavors were spot on and the tuna was incredibly fresh. We also tried the Loco Moco, and I can honestly say it may have had the best gravy we've ever had. It was rich, flavorful, and completely unforgettable. Between the outstanding cocktails, delicious food, and excellent service, this was easily one of the highlights of our trip. We can't wait to come back and work our way through more of the menu!

I arrived ahead of my friends for a late lunch/early dinner and walked up to the host stand to ask if there was a table available. I was immediately told the restaurant was completely booked. I texted my friends to see if they had made reservations, and thankfully they had. When we checked in together, we clearly told the staff that we had dogs with us and assumed we'd be seated on the patio. Instead, we were seated inside. We thought it was odd, but trusted there was a reason for it. What made the experience so confusing was that we spent about an hour and a half there, and the restaurant remained almost completely empty the entire time. The patio was also essentially empty. The only other party seated near us was upset that there were dogs inside and made it very obvious. To be clear, we never asked to sit indoors....we expected and preferred the patio. As we were leaving, I overheard the host ask another employee, "Do you think that dog's actually a service dog?" That caught me completely off guard because we never claimed our dogs were service animals. It felt like an unnecessary assumption. Looking back, the entire experience left me with more questions than answers. Why tell someone the restaurant is completely booked when both the dining room and patio stayed largely empty? Why seat guests with dogs inside when the patio was available? I don't make accusations lightly, but as a person of color, I couldn't help but wonder whether I was being treated differently. I can't say for certain that was the case, but it's how the experience made me feel, and it's not something I've ever felt comfortable writing in a review before. To make matters worse, the food didn't make up for the experience. It was mediocre at best, especially considering the prices. For what they charge, I expected much better quality and flavor. Instead, I left feeling like I had overpaid for an underwhelming meal. Overall, I walked away feeling confused, unwelcome, and disappointed. Between the strange seating situation, the comments from the staff, the overpriced food, and the overall experience, I don't see myself returning.
