Lots of cocktails to choose from, good service, and a really cool atmosphere. The cocktails here are really good

The Lost Inferno is a tiki bar in San Clemente that is themed around the classic 1980s movie "The Goonies". It is a drinks-only bar for now, so eat before coming. Their website teases that food is coming soon. It is a fairly small place and I would definitely recommend making a reservation on Yelp. If there are no reservations available when you want to visit, they also have a Yelp live waitlist. The building has its own parking lot with about ten spaces and is shared with the sushi speakeasy upstairs. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Sunday night, and luckily there were still quite a few spaces available. A half hour later, the place was packed. The outside of the building is not marked. Enter through the red double doors in front, walk to the right, and the entrance will be easy to spot. Seating options include eight seats at the bar, four high-top tables in the main area that seat four people each, and a slightly raised grotto area with one four-seat table and two two-seat tables. We often like to sit at the bar, but I reserved a table in the grotto so we could get the full experience and I'm glad I did. The interior has great décor with a mix of tiki and pirate ship elements. The walls are wooden plank, with cargo netting, ropes, and tiki lights above. The walls have portraits of Goonies movie characters. Take two steps up to the grotto area, and you are inside of a cave with skulls, shells, and treasures embedded in the cave walls. There is also a small waterfall in the corner. Scan the QR code on the table for the cocktail menu. It is colorful and many of the drinks have names tied to The Goonies. Each drink also has zero, one, or two skulls next to it to indicate the booziness factor. They have quite a few original cocktails as well as classic tiki drinks, a few mocktails, spirits, beer, and wine. I started out with the Ash Landing (Hamilton Pot Still Blonde Rum, Hamilton 86 Demerara Rum, Hamilton Pimento Dram, Angostura Bitters, Pineapple, Lime, Ginger, One Skull booziness, $14). This was definitely a little on the boozy side, with good ginger flavor and the pineapple and lime in the background. She started out with the One-Eyed Willy (Pou Vodka, Lychee, Guava, Coconut, Sweet & Sour, $15, keep the mug for $65). It is rare that a vodka drink is my favorite of the night, but this was both of our favorites. It was very balanced and juicy, and not boozy at all. The guava, coconut, and citrus from the sweet and sour were all there. We bought the mug, and they bring you a new one in original packaging. The purchased mug is colored a little differently (blue instead of black) than the mug the drink is served it, but it still looks great. While walking around taking pictures, I ran into our server and mentioned that it was my girlfriend's birthday. He kindly brought us some shots on the house. He said it was a recipe they had for shots during Halloween, and it tasted like a spin on a kamikaze. It was very good and much appreciated. I have a hard time resisting a cool mug, so for my second drink I ordered the Slick Shoes (Planteray Pineapple Rum, Worthy Park Rum, Bounty Dark Rum, Strawberry, Papaya, Lime Juice, $17). It is served in a cool sneaker mug with a flaming lime half on top. It was nicely balanced and just a tiny bit boozy. It had a nice light fruit flavor, not overly sweet at all. I think it is sometimes served in a regular glass, so if you order it, be sure to ask for the sneaker mug. Her second cocktail was the Never Say Die (Producer Mezcal, Kiwi, Lemon, Mango, Grilled Pineapple, $14). The smokiness of the mezcal was on the hairy edge of being too smoky for me, but she loved it. She could taste the kiwi and mango. We shared one last drink, the Garden of Eden (Papa's Pilar Blonde Rum, Lavender, Lemon, Elderflower, Cucumber Bitters, One Skull booziness, $17). It had an interesting (good) floral flavor profile, and didn't strike me as boozy at all. I could definitely taste the cucumber notes from the bitters. There was good 80s music playing in the background. It's a Goonies themed bar, I get it, but we would have enjoyed a few tiki songs in the mix too. There is one unisex restroom out in the lobby area. It is nice that they also themed it with wooden plank on the walls and ceiling, and some nautical décor. Daniel was our server and was very friendly and provided great service. Thanks again Daniel for the birthday shots! Bartender Felipe also delivered one round of our drinks and was also very friendly. Ambiance is #1 here, with drinks being #2. We never have ordered food because we are vegan and usually tiki bars dont have much to offer. Im giving this place 3 stars because there is 1 bathroom for the whole place, and you frequently see people dancing around outside waiting. they also dont let you use the restaurants bathroom upstaires. i ended up having to leave and walk down the block to use another restaurants bathroom. I wont be going back to this bar until they remedy the bathroom situation. it shouldnt even be legal. Weve been in the west coast tiki scene since 2010, ranging from Vancouver, Canada, Washington, Oregon and all the way to San Diego, and as much as we like this place, being 50+ without a reliable bathroom to use is a No-Go for us. I asked the Host at the door If I could use the restroom at the restaurant up stairs and she said, " we dont allow the tiki bar patrons to use the restaurant bathroom." Then the host watched me pace back and forth for a few more minutes and watched me leave. So if the manager is saying otherwise, either they need to retrain the host (who was there 9 months ago so not new), or the manager just made this up so the review wouldnt hurt business. So , the next time we are there, I'll specifically tell the host the manager said to let me use the bathroom upstairs and see if it works. Im also going to screen capture the managers response and save it to notes, so that if im told i cant use the bathroom at the restaurant again, I have something to show to them. read more

The Lost Inferno is so much fun! As a tiki bar enthusiast, I've visited this spot many times over the years and they never disappoint. Tucked back in an unassuming tiny strip mall in San Clemente, you wouldn't even know it's there. There's not much parking except a few spots in the lot out front and on the street. I highly recommend reservations if you're planning to visit. This Goonies themed spot transports you to a dark pirate ship with photos of characters from the 80s movie adorning the walls. The drinks are always top notch and the service quick and friendly. No food available so plan accordingly. As long time Goonies fan, the ambiance and staff were top notch! I kept low expectations and wanted to be surprised. Fun! Feels like the first time at a ride like Pirates of the Caribbean! ‍Spent well worth time looking at the Goonies decor and remembering the actors and movie lines . Food was ok and drink prices were on the high end ($16-$18 per cocktail). But you are going for the nostalgia, fun menu and energetic staff! The Lost Inferno is a good neighborhood tiki bar. You have to look to find it. But once you do, it is a small establishment with servers who are happy to help you decide what drinks you might like. We came during a slow season and did not need a reservation at 5:00. My Navy Grog was a bit too citric for my preference, and the server graciously gave me some simple syrup upon my request. While they do not serve food, we were told we could bring in food from other places. Next time, we will probably bring something in from Sonny's which is almost next door. The lost inferno is a Goonies themed speakeasy in San Clemente. It was actually difficult to find this place as I had no idea it was located in the restaurant Momoku. They do have a yelp waitlist but recommend reservations by all means. I also recommend reservations for the grotto area as it has a pirate water fountain and very intimate. Perfect for a date night. Otherwise upon entry you are transported to a whole other world. It is Goonies inspired and so epic! The menu is also on a treasure map via QR code and the drinks truly are phenomenal. They have skulls listed to tell you the strength of the drink and I thought that was creative. All the cocktails were also reasonably priced between $14-$18 they also had a ship fishbowl which requires 2-3 sailors for $36. My favorite cocktails were the truffle shuffle, the horchata colada and the zombie. The zombie for sure packed a punch! Heads up don't come here hungry as they have no food just phenomenal drinks! First Time Here If you are wanting a fun place to try, make a reservation or walk in. It makes you feel youthful coming into a hidden tiki bar that transports you into the Goonies movie. We were fortunate to be seated at the fun-&-active bar top without making a reservation on an early Saturday evening. Dimly-lit speakeasy bar with limited seating offering an intimate feel. Our friendly and talented bartender carefully crafted attractive & tasty cocktails for us. Their cocktail menu labels their "strong" (1 skull) and "really strong" (2 skulls) drinks; hubby always gravitates towards the double skull cocktails. After such a positive experience, we returned -- again, ecstatic to sit at the bar top, to be entertained by mixologist Ryan, who masterfully assembled a wide variety of drinks for the entire bar (with the help of Don)! Having the friendly-&-personable team of Ryan and Don made the experience especially enjoyable, having us desiring to return again... very soon! In our 3 visits, to date, my negative comment about this place is their one shared restroom's (which I'm not the only one to note) sticky floors, which reeks an offensive stench. However, I'm thankful one is available, well stocked with soap and paper products. Outside of improving the fragrance of the room, a coat/purse hook would be helpful and appreciated, too. read more

Came here with my husband after our dinner, as we were celebrating his birthday and wanted a drink. This is a cool speakeasy bar. It took us some time to find ( no name outside -hence speakeasy) we walked around the building until someone finally told us where to go. I had put my name on a waiting list so when we went in we were able to get seated at the bar. This is a pirates theme bar , at least I looked like that to me. I don't remember the name of my drink but it was pretty good. My husband also enjoyed his drink. The bartenders are very nice and attentive. It has plenty of seating inside and at the bar. Great Goonies themed bar. Goonies is my wife's favorite movie ever. We sat in the Grotto area in the back. That area is very cool, but a bit smaller than I anticipated and was quite noisy when it filled up. Drinks are great, and a wide assortment available. Only complaint, we paid $65 to take home the One Eye Willie tiki mug, which is awesome. Then, they brought us out a new one in a box, which was appreciated, but is was blue instead of black. I requested to keep the one I was drinking from and was told no, those are only for serving. The blue one is still pretty cool, but we really preferred the one we were drinking from. There's no doubt that The Lost Inferno is a fun and unique experience. The interior is a visual treat, clearly inspired by The Goonies, with an atmosphere that's both lively and immersive. Their Mai Tai, Zombie, Tropical Itch, and Jet Pilot are all top-notch--strong, balanced, and beautifully presented. If you're into tiki drinks, this is your spot. That said, getting there can be a bit of a hassle. It's tucked away and the parking situation is frustrating. It's also very popular, so expect to fight for a reservation--especially on weekends. My biggest gripe? The bar stools. They're flimsy wicker and feel like they're on their last legs--literally. Sitting at the bar is far more comfortable and also gives you a chance to interact with the bartenders, who are friendly and know their craft well. Despite the inconveniences, The Lost Inferno delivers a memorable night out--just don't lean too hard on those stools. read more

I do love me a good tiki bar; strong drinks, tropical decor, dimly lit with pops of color. It's really tough to improve upon the experience but Lost Inferno ups the ante by tossing in a splash of 80's motion picture nostalgia with some Goonies themed drinks and decor. The place is relatively small and seats probably in the neighborhood of 50 people. Reservations are for 90 minutes but yours truly managed to knock back three drinks in that time. Service is friendly and prompt and the overall experience was top notch. Great first visit to the Lost Inferno, San Clemente's tiki spot. I've now been to both Goonies tiki bars on the Pacific coast and each wows in their own way. North for the food and drink combos, while here we've got some quirky takes on tiki faves + some of the most thoughtful decor representing our favorite Astorians. I ordered the Slick Shoes first and it was bomb. Probs the best drink on the menu + it comes out in fire, always a plus. Hubs ordered the Blue Astoria & Ash Landing... good but my drink won the night. Fab, friendly service. The decor is so much fun. Tons of Easter eggs hidden throughout for the Goonies fan. I was hoping to get a table; however, since we were only a party of two we were placed at the bar which was fine; however, we had intended to stay for longer- but due to lack of privacy we left after a couple of rounds. The drinks were really delicious as well. They all came in fun cups which I think is a key part of the Tiki experience. They don't have food, but they let you bring outside food in because of that.
