What I loved about the hotel was the quirkiness. I wouldn't want to live in a house with a pug head for a door knocker, but it was fun for a couple nights! The location was also prime - right on East Bay for a quick walk to Market or down towards the water for an evening stroll past the pineapple fountain. I also really appreciated the early morning delivery of a muffin and croissant -- it was so nice to get my bag of goodies off the door handle and enjoy them while watching the morning news or puttering about in my pajamas. Even with all these delights, there were some drawbacks. The first room we were taken to had one chair -- whereas the room description included a desk and chair. I didn't need to write a novel, but with one chair and two people I'm not sure where they intended for us to eat breakfast. We also happened to be there in the midst of their conversion from one art theme to the next. So there were no evening gallery receptions or talks about the artwork (one of the selling features for us). This was also a quirky hotel for accessibility. To get to our room we went up in the elevator, then down a hall, down about 5 stairs, through a fire door across a stairwell landing and through another fire door to our room (one of two on our floor). I know that this would have been a difficult trek for my older parents, especially with luggage. Bottom line, it's a cute little hotel with a lot going for it. I might even stay there again the next time I'm in Charleston.

The rooms are very comfortable and include a kitchen area stocked with fresh coffee beans, tea, and other refreshments. Typically nice hotels have a friendly doorman to greet you - for some reason they had the complete opposite of that - bold strategy. Go to the hotel bennett or Elliott house instead.

The 3rd party listing did not make it clear that this property is strictly adults-only. We arrived very late at night, picked up our keys from the mailbox, and went straight to our room. The next morning at breakfast, we were approached by a woman (presumably the owner) who didn't greet us or ask how our stay was, but instead interrogated us about whether we were even guests. When we confirmed we were staying in the Magnolia Room, her tone immediately became sharp as she informed us--quite sternly--that children are not allowed and that our stay violated fire codes. She implied that we had deliberately misrepresented our booking, which was both surprising and upsetting given our honest misunderstanding. After rechecking our reservation, I saw no mention of an adults-only policy anywhere on the third-party site. The only reference appeared deep in a follow-up email attachment from the inn itself--something easy to miss. While the room itself was clean and nicely decorated, the bed slanted and was uncomfortably soft. More importantly, the unwelcoming and confrontational tone from the owner completely overshadowed what could have been a pleasant stay. This property may suit adults traveling without children, but families--or really anyone expecting warm hospitality--should be aware of how confrontational the owner can be.

I chose the hotel, because I wanted to stay somewhere with historic charm (I wanted to feel I was in Charleston)! It was an all right stay. T he building (a historic house) was beautiful - especially the porch, where you can sit and enjoy your coffee in the morning. Our room was nice (it had the wallpaper and wood features I really wanted), especially the bathroom. But the room had seen better days (peeling wallpaper), wasn't the most functional (no outlets near the bed for charging phones), and had a strange basement room (down the stairs was a basement room with a TV, bar, and couch - it was a little creepy, but more than that, I just didn't think it was safe to have those steps so close to the bathroom door - someone who'd had a few too many drinks might just fall right down those steps. The location was okay/pretty good - not really in the heart of things, it was about a 15 minute walk to King Street. This worked for us on Saturday, because it was a lovely day and we had a chance to see a bit of the city (the 15 minutes is a great walk past restaurants and shops), but the weather on Sunday made the distance not so great. And FYI - the walk to the Battery would probably be an hour, but you can obviously Lyft/Uber or pedicab. The location was great if you want a little separation from the more touristy parts of downtown or a quieter neighborhood, but we did Uber more than we normally would on a weekend trip. My biggest gripe is that the hotel is a no-staff or self-service hotel (there's no one to check you in and you are sent the information you need to get into your room ahead of time by text). I've stayed in no-staff/self-service hotels on two other occasions. Sometimes it works out fine, but it really turns a hotel into an airbnb. You can't leave luggage with the front desk if you're checking out hours before your flight nor are there the amenities you might expect at a hotel with front desk staff. I didn't realize from the description on hotels.com that The Ashley was a no-staff/self-service hotel, and I probably wouldn't have booked it if I had known (because we had a 6pm flight and ended up having to store our bags in our friends' hotel). The staff (not on site but available by text) were responsive and helpful, but I think I just prefer a standard hotel. Overall, our stay was fine, but I probably wouldn't stay again.

As with any older house the bathrooms were very small and hard to maneuver. The carriage house had a musty smell which was not great. We absolutely loved the area and were aware that we were a little far from a lot of the touristy things but we were fine with that. We were walking distance from King Street which was nice. The fire pit and the porches are worth the stay - absolutely breathtaking. We spent a lot of time outside which was great. The snacks and drinks were very nice. The breakfast was good but it is a bagel sandwich which is a little too heavy for me. I would stay hear again.

The Halls family have designed a wonderful events venue…read more This is in a great location, behind SNOB, with a public car park around the corner, making this a great convenient downtown location. The hall is warm and inviting, decorated in a very "Halls" like way of dark wood. The catering is provided by Halls and my understanding was there is quite a selection depending upon the budget. I came here for a Medical University of South Carolina Christmas party and it was wonderful and festive. There were three stations. The first was the beef sirloin carvery, with salads, bread rolls, accompanying sauces and a chef carving and serving the beef. The second station was a shrimp and grits table with cornbread muffins. The last table had two different kinds of flatbread. One with chicken and the other with a Neapolitan vegetable flatbread. Although the number of choices was limited - well, relatively for a party, having fewer choices but great ones is far more appealing. All the food was mouth-watering. The portions were small at the carving station, however you could ask for more or go back as many times as you wish. The other stations were self serve. There were two separate bar setups and it was a full bar menu. The wonderful staff even made me an alcohol free "fruity" which was delicious! The seating was a mixture of round tables and farmhouse style long tables, which gives the place a great non-uniform look. There is a second floor with smaller round tables and sofas to make it a more intimate setting. Quite a few chose to bring their desserts here. The desserts consisted of trays of miniature sweet treats; brownies and iced cookies, mini lemon pies and more. I'd definite say that this place is a win! The location, the decor, the staff, the service and of course the food is all of the highest standard. Well, with it being "Halls", that was to be expected right?
