This place is a hidden jewel! I visited the hotel during a renovation opening party and was blown away! The pool and rooftop area were breathtaking. I met with the Director of Sales, Randy Elmore was incredibly friendly and invited me to host an event there! The food and drinks from the bar were Dallas perfect! I love Hotel Lumen! Its great that they allow dogs for no extra fee and they really make you feel welcome when you have pets! I have stayed here multiple times and its always very clean which is extremely important to me. The people at the front desk are really nice and helpful. Its also a really easy hotel to get in and out of, the valet is faster than most hotels. The hotel is also in a really good central location in Dallas. Close enough to visit people around University park, easy to hop on 75, close to uptown etc. I can't wait to go back! read more

I booked a standard room but when I checked in the only room left was a suite so I received the upgrade! The room was spacious. The staff was amazing. They were kind and generous with my 2 beagles. The hotel has some beautiful chrome statues. There was a wine social in the lobby in the afternoon and coffee n muffins in the morning. Valet was kind enough to fill our ice chest before we left. I love this Hotel. One of these reviews says that this is an old Ramada hotel. This is wrong. I live across from the hotel for years. It was an old parking structure that they turned it into a hotel. Also the hotel is only three years old. After years of staying there I can say that almost every room is different. The bar on the first floor is a nice place to hang out. If you are visiting SMU this is the place to stay. You can just walk across the street and you are there. The hotel staff are very nice and are great at getting you anything you need. Best pet-friendly hotel ever. They don't just let you bring your dog, they cater to your dog. We just visited, brought our dog, Elvis of the Beagle Freedom Project. ALL the staff was amazingly kind and interested in him. The valet guys were great, attentive, friendly, they all took a moment to say Hi to him. Front desk was the same. They don't just check you in, they take time to get to know you. The restaurant was out of this world. I can not give them enough praise. It was pouring rain outside and instead of turning us away with Elvis, they found a way to accommodate us. Garrett was one of THE best waiters we have ever had. He went above and beyond and every recommendation he made was spot on. The burger and fries, one of the best ever, worth the price. John brought Elvis his own plate of bacon. Best experience. Sylvia also helped us, she was great! We stayed in a suite. Great room. No complaints. Hosted coffee in the morning on our floor, didn't even have to go downstairs. This hotel is amazing! We just sorrento a night here for my birthday abs they treated me like royalty. They rolled out the red carpet for me. The view from our room was beautiful and it over looked SMU. The staff was helpful and super nice. We had food delivered and they brought it up to us so we didn't have to go downstairs to meet the delivery person. My husband called a head to let them know it was a special occasion and wanted to do something extra spacial for me so they brought up champagne and chocolate. How amazing is that?! We're definitely going to be coming back. read more

The location is good, directly across from SMU. My room was really chilly the first night, but better after I got the HVAC figured out. The fitness area is meager--far better to go for a walk or run on the Katy Trail. They have bikes to borrow. Breakfast didn't start until 7am. We came to this cute and clean boutique hotel for orientation. They first put us in a room that smelled like an animal grooming saloon. The smell of urine was so strong we knew we could not stay. We called down and they apologized and said their was an animal the night before that made a mess. (WHY TRY AND PUT US THERE?) The friendly staff moved us into a very nice with a pleasant odor. The following day after returning from orientation our keys did not work. Small little inconveniences but they add up. Hotel Lumen is my new favorite Dallas boutique-y hotel! It was very reasonably priced, nestled in SMU's campus and near Highland Park posh. I loved the swanky look and comfy-but-cool ambiance. I stayed in a King suite overlooking the pool and was extremely impressed with the room layout and dreamy bed linens & mattress. The staff was friendly and helpful. The pool was delightful. Nice toiletries, towels, and robes too. I didn't eat in the restaurant much, but the cocktails were tasty. I'll come back for sure. read more

From the guys parking the car and front desk staff to the waiters in the restaurant and the housekeeping staff, you won't find more friendly people. Hotel accepts pets. We needed a hotel for a week and have two cats and a dog. No extra charge. Awesome. Kind of pricey for low-amenities in the room, but the fact they took three pets wins them praise from my family. Need more sunlight in our room. Was promised a better room before checking in (I personally spoke w/ manager a month before our check in), but no one paid attn. to the notes. They graciously gave a free meal in the hotel restaurant. Very nice gesture! Didn't like the fact they open the hotel pool to the community on Sunday. Way crowded for a tiny pool! Also, hotel is due for a makeover and restaurant menu is too jacked up. They're trying too hard to be "cool." Food average to below avg. If you are traveling with pets, this is "the" place to stay in Dallas. The service was great and hotel is newly remodeled. Terrific location, near the best shopping in big D. When we were leaving, we had our our hands full, including big dogs on leashes. An employee offered and took the leash so we could load our stuff in the car. Not worth the rate! Miniature size rooms, over labeled. Street side rooms hear traffic, pool side rooms hear courtyard noise. Rattling pipes in new side of building awaken you if another room showers before you are up. Roof top acces is neat to view the cityscape, but don't accept a third floor room or you will hear guests above you well into the night. Staff are pleasant, just wish the stay was. We choose to stay hear for the convenience of location, but no more; rate is simply too high for the product. read more

I honestly don't even know what to say about this Hotel... Everything about this place is wrong. I truly believe that they just bought a run down abandoned office building and just glazed over everything with "shiny things". I think they instead should have named this place "The Oxymoron" bc you can't call a expensive luxury hotel that also features bugs, broken bathroom sliding doors, cracks in the floorboards, hard cheap bedding, run down air conditioners, and poor customer service. I should have known better when the stimulated pictures online are more related to cartoons then real life. The girl at the front desk who gave us the wrong room twice acted like we're inconveniencing her "alone time" at work and gave us a huge attitude. Not only that but based off her appearance I don't think she has bathed in years and that's a huge sign of mental illness. Maybe that's the explanation for this hotel- everyone and everything about it is clinically insane. All the walls are painted with this cheap off white chippy paint that I'm assuming they share with the local DMV. The rooms are cold, uninviting, and sterile yet feels hot and moist due to the broken air conditioner. Quick tip I learned here- if you feel hot or uncomfortable in the soggy sliced bread bedding, just lay on top of it and hug one of the glittery plastic pillows for dear life. Before you know it the sun will be up and your back and wallet will have a huge dent in it. There's no need to visit the fitness center since the Lumen offers a complimentary modern workout where you slap Nats off your walls all night. I would say that if you are a person that prefers appearance over function then this is the place for you but that's not even accurate. How about this, if you are a person who's always wanted to stay in a Mental Hospital but also enjoys the facade of leisure, then this is your place! Based off the true theme of the Lumen I was even reluctant to order room service because it would probably be a old cold hot pocket covered by some gourmet drizzle. I've stayed in both Dallas Kimpton properties, this hotel along with the larger Palomar. I prefer this hotel to the Palomar. The Lumen is the best of Kimpton. Small, personable, cozy. The lobby is cozy with low ceilings and always has the most wonderful scent when you walk in. read more

I've stayed at the Lumen several times over the years. Before the renovation and addition of the new building, this was one of my favorite hotels. Except for the location - within walking distance of SMU - I would not stay here again. Used to have Aveda products, now some cheap Kimpton stuff; toilet kept running - after two requests for maintenance on succeeding days failed to fix it, we gave up; used to have fruit in the lobby, now an expensive restaurant with a truly bizarre menu; used to have good coffee in the lobby, now cheap stuff; used to have coffee maker in the room, no more. I stayed here last weekend based solely on the location. I knew that University Park was a nice area and I felt entirely safe. Downtown Dallas is so sketchy that I don't know why anyone would want to stay there. There are a handful of nearby restaurants to walk to and the Bush Library is also about a 15 min walk across the SMU campus. You will either need to drive or take a cab to get anywhere else really though. Parking is by valet only. The actual room was nice enough but the shower operations are very strange. The knob operates both the shower head and some horizontal jets and neither of us could ever figure out how to make it very comfortable. We even asked the maid and she didn't know either but offered to send up an engineer. No that's ok. Another thing, twice we called for more bath towels and after waiting 20 min no one brought any, so then I had to call again. Also, the shower area is separated from the main part of the room only by a curtain that you pull across, so there's not tons of privacy if that matters. I had breakfast downstairs and enjoyed my eggs benedict. The restaurant seemed busy most times of day to my surprise. I wouldn't complain about staying here again but I might try somewhere else next time. read more

I spent over an hour calling hotels in Dallas that said they were "dog friendly" but had weight/size restrictions. I was so frustrated because my large dogs are so kind and friendly. The Lumen is truly dog friendly and does not have weight restrictions! Upon arrival to the hotel, the valet personnel were so incredibly helpful with all my luggage since I was also walking 2 large dogs. The front desk service was outstanding! He was so kind and gave my sweet dogs some treats and dog toilet bags. My husband and I are so impressed by the service, kindness and helpfulness of every single employee. We especially loved that The Lumen does not charge additional fees for our dogs. Being a military family without human children, our dogs are a huge part of our life. We will always recommend the hotel and of course return to this hotel the next time we're in Dallas. They loved our dogs and treates them the way family members should be treated. read more

Hotel Lumen is chic, ultra-modern, and beautifully appointed. However, the service personnel, though polite, are inefficient. I had called two days before to request an early check-in and was told that the hotel would note my request but there were no guarantees. When I checked in at 1:30 PM, I was informed that no rooms were available because of many earlier arrivals and that I would have to wait until 3:00 to obtain a room. That night, I wanted a cup of coffee. Since no coffee maker was in the room and no coffee was being served in the lobby, I spoke to the clerk at the front desk who said that she would send coffee to my room. I assumed that the coffee would come from Room Service. Almost an hour later, after numerous calls to the front desk, a clerk arrived with a coffee maker. In addition, I was attending a special event that weekend and the family had prepared gift bags for all out-of-town guests who were staying at the hotel. We were supposed to receive gift bags at check-in. That didn't happen. That night, a clerk called to ask if I had received a gift bag and I replied that I had not. She said that it would be delivered to my room. Thirty minutes later, a family member, not a hotel staff member, brought me the bag. read more

This hotel screwed up and didn't apologize or seem to care. When I booked at first, I booked for only Saturday night... Called back two weeks later, spoke to the same woman (contact given to the wedding guests) to book Friday night as well. Got two confirmation emails only to discover (upon check-in) they were both for Saturday. Well, they gave me a room with no windows for Friday and although I had to prepare for the 1pm wedding- I also now had to repack and move to my Saturday room. Not only did they not care about the inconvenience to me, it almost seemed that they looked at it like it was my fault. The same way they did when I checked out and they surprised me with a $22/night parking fee. Not disclosed at check-in, not at the valet, not in the confirmation email. I wouldn't have rented a car if I knew this. Two stars because the room was nice and the restaurant had very good food. Although they were very nice and accommodating to the older "richer" looking guests- my 36 year old self seemed to be more a nuisance to them which isn't a nice way to feel when you're a paying guest in a new city and they don't have your reservation correct in the first place.
