Wait, there's no reviews for The Mac & Gold Truck yet?! Well allow me to fix that. The Mac & Gold Truck is fantastic - their food is a MUST and it might very well be my favorite local food truck. The concept is pretty simple - you walk up to their truck and order either one of their special mac and cheese recipes for the day, or a standard order of mac and cheese with optional additional toppings (such as chicken, bacon, tomatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, onions). Pretty soon you get a hot creamy box of mac and cheese back and your meal is served! It's simple and delicious comfort food at its best. Depending on how many toppings you get or which special you order, your total meal price can range from $5 to $10+, which is totally reasonable in my book. The best part is that if you can't quite finish off your mac and cheesy goodness, you can take the cups or containers home with you. They're totally transportable and not nearly as messy as you'd expect a mac and cheese container to be. Two thumbs up from me - definitely start tracking them on their social profiles so you can catch them at a street near you soon!

Mac & cheese with lump crab and andouille sausage

To start off, I LOVE food trucks. Now, I'm not sure if that will make me bias or not, but I wanted to start off with that. The menu was simple, with about 5-6 different kinds of mac & cheese. There are 2 sizes - a snack size and a regular size. The regular size filled me up. I ordered the Mac with lump crab and andouille sausage. It's definitely extra cheesy (cheese for the win!). Also, a good amount of lump crab & andouille sausage pieces. Nothing gets my britches in a twist more than an overpriced plate, or advertising toppings and only putting a small spoonful. That's not the case here. I was impressed and will keep my eye out for this food truck in my future outings. Also, the garlic Rosemary fries were perfectly seasoned. Enough garlic and rosemary mingled to make the fries super yummy. Side note - I love the name! Smart marketing on their part. Kudos!

I have had my eye on this place FOR EVER. Over the weekend, I was finally able to check it out during a food truck roundup at The Coffee Buddha. When I read the words "bacon, mushroom & jalapeno mac", I about fainted. Of course I had to get it. I placed my order, was given a number & waited about 10 minutes for the food (not bad at all). $8.50 is a little steep but it was a large portion of mac & they were VERY generous with the shiitake mushrooms, thick bacon & jalapenos. It was delicious.... I'm drooling thinking about it. It was definitely spicy- the bacon was even spicy.. but it was SO good & very filling. I was only able to eat about half of it, since I had also ordered other food items from other food trucks. The leftovers were just as good the next day. I will continue to stalk their twitter & will be visiting them again asap.

Pittsburgh is a town with no shortage of really good food trucks, but Mac & Gold has long been my fav. I will walk long distances when I hear they are anywhere near downtown to indulge that comfort food craving, because they just do it so well. Before the stay-at-home order started, Mac & Gold was my last downtown lunch. That day, I had my favorite -- plain mac with roasted tomatoes and broccoli mixed in. I'm a vegetarian and my other favorite of theirs is the four-bean mac that's like a veggie taco. I've missed them over the past couple of months, so was excited to see them post on Insta that they were offering a Memorial Day weekend meal of a half tray of mac -- plain, specialty or choose your own mix-ins -- and you could even add a fresh salad, to feed 6-8 people at minimum. We ordered with convenient curbside pickup at their Babcock Blvd. location and their staffer was so nice, responsive and prompt with the order. The mac could have been picked up hot or cold; we went for cold and it was helpfully labeled with heating instructions, with the panko bread crumbs on the side, and tastes just like it came off the truck. The salad could not have been more generous, beautiful or fresh, with a big container of yummy, tangy balsamic dressing. We have been eating this all holiday weekend long; at $35 for the mac and $20 for the salad, what a great value over what could have been one takeout meal. They are available most days for curbside pickup at that same location and for delivery via Uber Eats, I think it is. Check their social for the specs and get your comfort food on during these trying times.

I stumbled across Mac & Gold at the Neighborhood Flea in the Strip. I knew of Mac & Gold by reputation and am glad I got to visit during my final PGH hurrah. It is an easy and unequivocal rating of five stars. No doubts or hesitation. I ordered a side salad with ranch. The salad was baby greens, grape tomatoes, and some fantastic ranch. I also got one of their daily specials with asparagus, tomatoes, and spinach. The mac part is thick twisty noodles that are toothsome and satisfying. Their cheese sauce is thick, rich, and the best I've ever had. It is a smooth, well-bound consistency with no hint of the oily separation that plagues so many mac-n-cheese sauces. The asparagus was fresh, and a good balance of crisp and tender. The tomatoes were beautiful and flavorful smushed orange balls. It was a wonderful combination.

This was my first time trying this food truck. I thought it was really good. I had the crab and prusciotto (? Spelling) special. My only wish was there were more crab in it! Quite tasty though. My husband had the broccoli/cauliflower mac n cheese. There was a long line but they had a great system where they gave you your number for your order. It went very smooth. Will be returning.

I was at the Squirrel Hill community night market and where my uber driver dropped me off, this was the first food truck I saw. Since I had skipped lunch, combined with the lovely smell, long lines plus good yelp review convinced me to give them a go. Plus I heart cheese! I got the lump crab with spinach and roasted red pepper for $11. After paying, I got a printout with my nos and then waited around 7-8 mins later till my Mac and cheese was ready. So first bite, it was too salty but there were some crunchy bits and the taste grew on me the more that I ate it. Loved the cheese used tho' I wish I'd spoken up and asked for more spinach. The roasted red peppers also had a touch of vinegar but they were a bit scarce. Lump crab pieces were there, and it tasted fresh but it was off to the side and I would have preferred if it was mixed in. So basically the garnishes are put in top rather than cooked with the Mac n cheese. Major props because it was filling and hearty and while the size looked small, it truly wasn't. It's really a 3.5 for me - I mean it was good but I'm not rushing to try it again. Note: #314 of Yelp 100 challenge for 2016

Bacon, blue, brisket, and shiitake mushrooms...hold the blue :)

Went to the Neighborhood Flea market in the Strip District this past Sunday and to my joy and enlightenment, the Mac & Gold truck was there! I've had this place on my list since a friend of mine always raves about it. Unfortunately, since I don't work around areas the truck frequents, I'm always missing out. So when I saw it - I had to get it even though I just ate and was bursting at the seams as it was. Opted for the bacon, blue, brisket, and mushroom mac & cheese...minus the blue - I'm not a fan. It was delicious. The past was a cellentani noodle (the long curly ones - I totally just googled that) and the cheese seemed was definitely not something from a box or packet. It wasn't too creamy, just about right as they pan fry the noodles before packing them in the box. Though delicious, I do wish there was a bit more brisket. I definitely had the smoked bacon taste, but the brisket I expected to be able to see whole pieces instead of chopped bits. They also top with a sprinkle of bread crumbs for added texture. Their to-go style boxes are perfect. Wax lined and ready to pack up if you can't finish. And I must say it's a hearty meal. I like to think I can eat well, but that day I was not up to the challenge. Needless to say it was today's lunch.

After trying for so long, I finally got to try Mac & Gold today. And I certainly was not disappointed. After seeing on their Twitter feed that they were going to be taking part in the Art Fest Food Truck Friday outside of the Gateway Center, I bolted down towards the point as soon as the clock hit their opening time. The wait was long since I went right around noon, but I was expecting that. Today the truck only seemed to be doing smaller portions, which honestly, I was actually happy about. Because if the large had been available, I probably would have gotten it and eaten way more than I needed to. I ordered the lump crab, chorizo, and green onion mac. Absolutely delicious. Some of the creamiest mac I've had. I love being able to eat mac with toppings. I guess it might help create the smallest illusion that what I'm eating is slightly healthy. My one complaint is I wish I could have had a little more crab for the $10 I paid. But it was still great! Can't wait to track them down again.

Excellent flavors of mac and cheese, along perfectly seasoned and cooked diced chicken. The french fries are a bit on the pricier side, but worth to have as a treat every once in awhile. Worth the wait on busier days, and definitely filling!

As a mac and cheese connoisseur, I'm very critical of any bowl of mac and cheese that lands in front of me. The mac and gold truck honestly has THE best mac and cheese I've ever had. Reasonably priced for the portion size, you get a trendy little to go box full of curly noodles in creamy cheese and breadcrumbs on top. And you can customize it with different add-ins like meats, veggies, and more! Five stars, two thumbs up, 10/10. I will follow this truck wherever it goes.

Had Turkey, bacon and broccoli mac and cheese. I ate it so fast that I can't describe it.

Sometimes it is a bit too lick like a club in there. Also perhaps they could add the octopus tacos to Tako Torta ! We visited for one last hoorah last weekend. The octopus wasn't on the menu but after checking with our waitress, they still had a few. We got both this one and then queso! I got chips for the queso since I don't do gluten and then corn tortillas with the tacos. The octopus was well cooked as usual. I had a frozen pain killer which was great. See you soon I hope!

My wife and I ordered the Big Cheese and the Big Tex and a side of fries. The Big cheese was a little underwhelming in that the Mac and cheese was pretty standard and overcooked, there weren't many jalapeños slices, and the hot dog is just boiled and plain. The Big Tex was also just a boiled dog (no grilling here), but came with more peppers, onions, cheese and had a smoky sauce drizzled on it that was nice. The fries were thick cut and crispy and seasoned with more than just salt so those were nice too. Overall meal was about $17 before tip which isn't too bad but seems a little steep--I take comfort in knowing that it's at least for a good cause.

This food truck is more of a trailer that is towed on the back of the truck and on the day we were there they had 2 people working it. They were slammed and so there was the game of trying to keep up with orders without taking too many. Their menu says proceeds are for the light of life rescue mission which is nice. For dinner on this day I decided to order a number of items to split with my wife and so went for the big tex as well as a southern belle, fresh cut fries with cheese and a Mac and cheese with bacon. The hot dog selection was the toughest choice for me as I was between the chili chaloochi and the big tex before the amount of good sounding items on the big Tex won out. It was described as a hot dog with grilled onions, sweet peppers and jalepenos with Cajun seasoning and also topped with tomatoes, shredded cheddar and cowboy mayo and the southern belle was described as their spicy chicken selection with fried chicken strips, pickles and chipotle sauce served in their signature grilled hot dog bun. After about a 15 minute wait or so, our food was ready and I was headed home. Whenever I got home the first thing I noticed was that they had forgotten my bacon on the Mac and cheese and cheese on the fries which was disappointing since I had paid for both. At that point I was not expecting to give them anything higher than a 3 star review. In any case, I first started with the big Tex and I have to admit that I loved it! The grilled onions, sweet peppers and jalepenos all added some nice flavor to it and the deep fried hot dog was delicious. It was definitely the best hot dog I have had in a long time and I didn't feel bad spending the $7 on it. After that I tried the southern belle. It was on the same buttered bun which the hot dog was on which was tasty. The chicken itself had a nice golden color to it and tasted good enough and I enjoyed the chipotle sauce. I only wish that it had more spice for something that was called spicy. With both of my entrees complete I was able to try both of the sides. I started with the fries which you could tell were freshly cut. They were well seasoned and both my wife and I enjoyed them. Last but certainly not least was the mac and cheese which was a creamy Mac and cheese. It was a decent Mac and cheese but nothing to tell my friends about. The bottom line for me is that I would head back to the rescue dogs food truck again in the future. I really enjoyed my hot dog and would be interested in trying their signature chili chaloochi.
