We came to The Mad Greek in Lawrence for my birthday with a reservation at 7 PM, party of four, cake and sash in tow. Unfortunately, the evening started off rocky and never quite smoothed out. Our server, Matt, was not the warmest or most welcoming when he first approached the table. We were ready to order everything, but when my partner mentioned appetizers, Matt cut him off mid-sentence and said, "I'm only taking drinks right now." The delivery was sharp and came across as rude. Later, when I asked Matt his name, I could see him soften a bit, realizing how he had been coming across. He explained that they were severely understaffed and that it had been a rough Sunday. As someone who has worked as a server and bartender myself, I get it. If he had led with that information, I probably would have been more understanding and left a higher rating. The food itself was a mix of highs and lows. We ordered toasted ravioli and saganaki as appetizers. The saganaki presentation was a highlight and Matt did a great job of lighting it, but then he quickly walked away, leaving us without silverware or napkins. The apps sat on the table for several minutes before I had to flag down the hostess to bring us what we needed. Anyone who has had saganaki knows it is best enjoyed right away, so that delay was frustrating. For entrees, we had gnocchi with grilled chicken, lasagna, a gyro plate, and fries. The food was solid, but the service overshadowed it. They were kind enough to refrigerate and later cut our birthday cake, which we appreciated. Other details worth noting: the table rocked badly, and my partner had to fold the drink menu into a wedge to stick under the leg so it wouldn't tilt as much. That was another small thing that added to the feeling of neglect. Overall, I'd call this a 3-star experience. I understand staffing issues and sympathize with the strain, but hospitality is about communication and warmth. A quick acknowledgment up front would have gone a long way. This was my second visit, and while the food has potential, there are other Greek and Italian spots nearby that feel more welcoming. I might give The Mad Greek another chance in the future, but it won't be anytime soon. read more

It's good.. but don't eat here if you have IBS. I know that's not their fault but a warning to you all. I'm scared to eat again lol. I will say though it's been better in the past. The fries used to stay crispy for longer. I'll definitely give it another try because this has been a favorite for so long. Also I got it doordashed so that could be my issue. Ok... so restaurant week in LFK! This was not where we had originally intended to go. But, in our wanderings and my girlfriend's request for Veg of some kind... we stopped in here! Immediately knew this was the right place. All decked out to look like you were dining in a cross of ancient Greek ruins and a Tuscan Applebee's garage sale. There was always something to look at! We were greeted at the door and seated almost immediately. Our waitress stopped while holding a tray just to greet us and give us her name. She said she would be right back to get our drink order! A few moments later... just enough time to look at and discuss the drinks she shows up with WATERs and takes our drink order. (Ok, sidebar... You will always get a better score if I don't have to ORDER the water. Just show up with it! I'll drink it... I never know I want it till I'm halfway through my beer anyway! This used to be a common courtesy thing. Please bring it back.) When she returned with our drinks from the bar (less than 2 minutes), she guided us through the menus. Yes, that is right. The lunch menu, the dinner menu, and the restaurant week menu. She gave recommendations and ultimately helped us pick our dinner! And the kitchen did not disappoint. The food was fantastic! Every bite was a journey through the Mediterranean that didn't require a passport, just a very large napkin and a moment of silence. If you haven't been served by Grace at The Mad Greek, have you even truly lived? Five stars isn't enough. There's a 'Michelin' Standard being overlooked on Mass street... in the modern "culinary constellation," stars are the ultimate symbol of excellence. Do not go here with children if you want to be treated with kindness and respect. The hostess was sadly very rude from the moment we walked in. She was angry and irritated we had children with us and made a point to make us feel unwelcome. She kept making comments about our kids. Our children were standing patiently and quietly, doing nothing wrong. She was throwing our menus and silverware down and glared at us repeatedly during our time there. I stopped in a couple evenings ago before going to a show while I was in Lawrence. I've been a couple times before & went this time just for the limoncello cake. I ended up also getting the toasted ravioli. It was not very much for the price, but it was good. The cake was DELICIOUS just like it always is. Location: Mass street. Downtown Lawrence Ambiance: This is a nice restaurant with indoor and outdoor sitting. Inside the restaurant, they have multiple paintings and sculptures ( watch my video) Food: they offer Italian and Greek options. The lasagna plate is popular, but my honest recommendation is to stay with Greek food. Italian food is not the best here ( or anywhere in Lawrence). Greek food is diverse and goes beyond the popular gyros. Service: This place can get crowded, especially during dinner time. Service is great. In the past I found The Mad Greek pretty good. My brother came into town for his birthday and went out here to show him Lawrence and knowing him being a huge fan of Mediterranean food took him to The Mad Greek. I was pretty let down and so was he, a bummer to be honest. I've been here a lot in the last 10 years but the last 2 times I've been have been just "ok". A cool restaurant the aesthetics inside are pleasing and the environment is comfy, a little tight for comfort so people may take notice in your party's conversation. All in all it's more of a "decent" restaurant than a "stand out" restaurant as I used to experience it. I got the Lamb Chops and a side of Brisket with fries. Lamb Chops- 3/10 (I wish the taste matched up with the price!! I think I ate one and my brother took a bite of another but didn't find it tasty so left the rest.) Used to be a great place, atmosphere, food, price. What's remaining now is only the interesting decor. The staff is rude, food if far from being great and the prices ridiculous. The last straw was on my birthday last night -- when we ordered take out with my birthday's wish -- tiramisu. When my husband brought home the bag -- there was no tiramisu. Phone call -- only to be told that even for the refund my husband needs to drive back (15 min each way). Of course if you spend 30 min driving you want at lest the tiramisu. Almost needed a magnifying to glass see the cake -- for $8!!!!!!! Outrages and they will never see me again. Very sad read more

First visit was a subpar experience, but will not be returning after my second experience. Went on a slow Thursday night and hostesses did not greet us, nor did any of the staff even gave us a smile. I visited Lawrence for the first time and met some friends at the Mad Greek. What a great recommendation! The restaurant had a nice patio and indoor seating. Parking is metered in front but there is a 2 hour free lot behind. Be sure to order the Saganaki (flaming cheese) appetizer because when your server brings the cheese to your table and lights it on fire the whole restaurant shouts "opa!" The gyros and dolmades are also not to be missed. read more

Attended Lawrence Restaurant Week. The building was packed and the customer service was good. The two Greek salads were Not good, the lettuce was frostbite. The appetizers were Fried Egg rolls & Gyro Fries. The egg rolls were burnt. The gyro fries were soggy and greasy. The main entrees included Lamb shank with tomato sauce & Gyro Platter with all Fixings. Lastly, the Chocolate Baklava and Baklava Sundae were decent but I wouldn't order again. Lawrence is a fun progressive college town and the home of the University of Kansas. There are great and unique restaurants here, but one thing my WHOLE family can agree on, is The Mad Greek! They have delicious classic Greek dishes, like the #Mousaka #Dolmades and #GreekSalad , but I've always loved LOVED the freshness and flavors of their #PastaAlaGreco with shrimp! With extra feta, of course! lol If that wasn't enough, starting with the flaming #Saganaki show is the best way to start my Greek cheese tour filled meal! The attentive customer service is always kind and excellent too!
