Who woulda ever thought I would be in porterville. No one. Lol. Was walking down Main Street and saw their front door looking like 1940s tavern. Loved it walked right in about 11am. All local veterans hanging out chatting drinking cheap beers. And stiff drinks this is their home away from home. I loved their comradery It was 92 degrees when I popped in. Pros, Cons, then summary. Went here with some family members recently. PROS--Well, not many pros. The place is laid-back, I guess. It has a pool table and nice juke box. It seems to be the only bar on Main St., and on the east side of town. CONS--NO TAP!!! How can you call yourself a bar, and not have a tap? No draft beers? Nonsense. .....The place is old, dirty, and weird. Bartender was a bit surly too. This place was basically a sh*thole. Seems like a place that could use John Taffer and "Bar Rescue". Everything was old and dirty. The crowd was very....unique. On this night we had hillbillies one hour, then Latino homeboys the next. Would I go here again? No, at least not willingly. OK I am not sure where to start with this one--this place is my favorite dive bar in my hometown. My sister and I use to drop off my dad here in the 70s and go cruising down Main and Olive Streets--in my sister's hot Firebird--and oh yeah she was 15 and I was close to 14--we would trade off driving. Porterville has an awesome Veteran's Day parade, and the Mecca use to (not sure if they still do--laws have changed dammit) have a sectioned off space on the sidewalk in front of the bar so you could have a cocktail and watch the bands and floats go by--I was in the parade from 7th to 12th grade (yeah and I really went to band camp) and I will tell you when I hit 21--I was at the Mecca. A parade is even better with a cocktail. Pool tables and cold beer baby. I still pop in when I go home and it still makes me feel like a kid when I walk through the doors. Nothing fancy so do not expect it, but a good, strong drink for a couple of bucks--expect that. read more

Went here with my brother. It was definitely an experience. As a kid, I always thought of this place as a dingy hole in the wall where sour people go to lose their troubles. Well, it turns out I was right. That is exactly what the Mecca is. But, damnit, it's fun. That night, after my brother rounded us up with a few drinks, was a damn fun night. The place was quiet on a Wednesday night. So it is obvious that there wasn't going to be a lot of people. The bartender was not the greatest. He immediately introduced us with a "no plastic... cash only." Then I asked for a AMF and he said the drink was 14$ almost like he didn't want to make it. We were in town from St.Louis, trying to find the Rams on television, went to Dickies as they said they had the game on there, but they didn't, so we went looking for a bar and found Mecca. The moment we walked in, the people go wild! Ram Fans!, I couldn't believe it, there were some 49ers there also. We met some very interesting people, and I have to say everyone was very friendly, our bar tender, Daniel, was a very nice guy and made very good drinks. It reminded me of a bar back home, just a great mix of people, all having a good time, of course the Rams lost! Were still in town as were full time campers, and we are going back to Mecca and hope to watch the Cardinals!! Go Redbirds! If were ever back here, We will visit the Mecca again, no frills just a great place to have a drink and enjoy life. read more

Every town has one, the dive bar, where all of drinking age go! The place is small & grungy hasn't changed for 20 years, no really. The drinks are cheap and plenty, worth the small price. People are friendly. I always leave have made a new friend or two. The place has some simple games to play shuffle board and pool to break up the monotony. Place is open from 6 am till 2 am. Beware the cop's hangout outside right at 2 am waiting to catch buzzed drivers. read more
