TLDR: Absolutely NO working Air Conditioning in rooms / Moldy Bathrooms / Beds are simply the MOST uncomfortable I've ever slept on - bar none. We come for comfort and rest, this hotel is the opposite. First time I've ever needed to shower at night and in the morning cause you're sweaty/sticky the entire time... and get hardly any sleep on the uncomfortable mattress. Read more below if you are interested to hear my full review. TO MANAGEMENT: You can claim you will "address" these issues. But the fact is - you have known about them for a LONG time, but CHOOSE to do nothing. You are choosing to invest in cosmetic upgrades like new carpet and fixtures, NOT infrastructure upgrades like adding AC and premium mattresses to improve guest comfort. So my review is a reflection of your inaction for YEARS. Shame on ME for not reading the reviews more before booking. Shame on YOU for delivering an uncomfortable, unclean experience for your customers. REVIEW: Like some recent reviews have said - I had high hopes seeing the photos and mostly positive reviews... but make no mistake - the photos and the reviews do not represent this hotel! My son and I were in town for an event at the Convention Center, and this one was one of the more reasonable options for our 3 night stay within walking distance. I thought it was worth saving a few hundred dollars, even if it wasn't a top level hotel. That was a BAD choice. I would definitely spend a few hundred dollars more for a clean, cool, and comfortable room! Because that means rest + sleep which = a nice trip. Positives first. I found the staff mostly pleasant. Spending 20 years in hospitality, I found it fair. Nice people, but definitely can tell there's a lack of care, which I'm sure is purely from a lack of positive management which... weren't present. As I stepped in the elevator, I was worried. The elevators are OLD, beat up, rickety, slow, and just completely sums up the expectation of the hotel. Getting off the elevator you are met with AC around 60 degrees. It was very refreshing as it was in the mid 90's and humid in June. Getting into the room, it was HOT. I wasn't worried until I found the thermostat. It's straight out of the 50's. Photo for reference. Just a knob to turn "colder" or "warmer". I turned the knob to the coldest setting and then left. Returning 4 hours later - the room was WARMER. At LEAST 75 degrees. Call the front desk. Maintenance comes up within 5 min and tells me a secret trick - turning to the "coldest" setting also turns on the heat. He plays with the knob for 5 minutes feeling the air with his hand trying to get it "cooler". Finally finds the secret spot on the knob, and says -this should get cooler. He then says that it won't get cool like the hallway. 2 hours later - it may have dropped 1 degree. It's NOT Air conditioning, because it doe NOT remove the humidity from the air. It is HUMID and WARM in the room. So if you want AC in your room - you should stop here and find the next hotel. We both proceed with ice cold showers trying to cool down from a long day. Uh oh. MOLD CITY - Shower is full on mold. Can tell they barely clean it. Next - sit down for a much needed bathroom stop - and the seat doesn't even fit the toilet. It's broken, and is barely staying on. Both exhausted, we finally lay down to find that the bed is not really a mattress at all. I've never, ever, slept on a mattress like this. In all the hotels over the years, college, or anywhere. The only way I can describe it is - think of a thin 1 inch mattress pad, put it on just the box springs, then sleep. That's it. Absolutely no give, and immediately within 2 minutes am sore and achey. So yeah, they just put in new carpet. There's flat screen tv's. The fixtures and furniture have been replaced within the past 5-8 years and still look decent. But basically, it's all for a photoshoot. That's not comfort. The photos are hiding all the important things they aren't investing in - GUEST COMFORT. They want photos to get us here, but clearly could care less if we return.

Impeccable service, bartender was very knowledgeable both in her craft and in local recommendations. Recommend the bar and overall facilities.

I have visited Nola several times and have stayed in everything from chain hotels, boutique hotels, and Airbnb's. So I've seen some good as well as bad places to stay. First of all, the location of this hotel is great if you are traveling with children. It's not right in the French quarter which means you are away from the chaos and crowds. There are several bars and restaurants in the area that are walking distance including Harrah's casino which is only a couple of blocks away. As far as the hotel, the rooms are very boutique style and so cute and really big and spacious. The staff was welcoming and helpful. They offer valet that has in and out services with no additional charges. Free breakfast for guests and a bar/restaurant in the hotel that has happy hour. This hotel really surprised me and there is no doubt I'll be back to stay there.

AVOID. DIRTY. NOT SECURE. RUN DOWN. UNFRIENDLY I'm starting to believe most of the glowing reviews I read Prior to booking are fake. If you want typical hotel amenities like house keeping, security, bar and friendly staff this hotel is not for you. Sure there's a bar in the lobby but it's mostly for show as there was only a bartender 1 night of our 4 night stay(that included a weekend). We ended up at the bar next door. This building is NOT secure. The scan your room key lock on the lobby doors is not functioning and hasn't in some time. The staff at the front desk NEVER looked up from their phones at any point when we would enter the lobby at various time throughout the night and the front doors never locked. Staff only looked up from their phones or spoke to us if we interrupted their screen time to ask a question. Don't let the pretty online pics fool you. This place is run down. Our room was cleanish upon check in but the rooms are cramped with furniture that doesn't match and feels like it was bought at auction. Our room was never serviced during our stay. Had to go to the front desk to ask for clean towels and coffee. The dirty linen bin live next to the elevator on each floor and never moves. It greeted us each time we got off the elevator. Only 1 working elevator. Don't let the 2 in the lobby fool you. There are broken light fixtures all over the property with missing shades. Our room didn't have a working ceiling light. Only 2 lamps , one of which flickered. So getting ready at night was a real challenge. And the mysterious smear stain in the elevator that never got cleaned. It looked like they attempted to clean something at one point but never quite finished the job. At this point it's a joke. The AC is laughable. We had it on its coldest setting and high fan and it never got cool. Thank god we brought a fan to circulate the hot air in the room. If you get hot when you sleep DO NOT STAY HERE. The beds are like sleeping on the floor. And the pullout bed sinks between the supports and digs into your back. The staffs favorite time to mop the floors is during breakfast/check out. Every single day of our stay. Nothing like smelling dirty bleach water while eating watery powder eggs. AVOID the free breakfast. It's a joke. Salty powder Eggs, microwaved rubbery sausage, stale pastry and a questionable fruit bowl. The table we sat at was so wobbly it spilled our coffee into our laps and we had to change our clothes. If you do choose to stay here request a room on floors 6 and up. If you don't you risk getting a view of a brick wall. We were on the 6th floor and our view skimmed the roof of the building next door. Finally, CHECK YOUR BILL. They charged us. $180 plus tax A DAY for valet parking. They don't give you the bill right away but email it later. When I called the hotel to point out the error I was told the manager was not in yet and they asked for my contact information so they could reach out to me later. I never received a phone call and called multiple times to get in touch with this manager. On my final call when I explained to the person answering the phone why I was calling I was told "What do you want me to do about it? take it up with you bank." They overcharged us by over $550 for valet parking. My credit card company told me it was a red flag that they did not give me a receipt upon check out. Not impressed. Won't be back. And based on the conversations we over heard most of the people that were there too won't be back either. Location is the only thing this place has going for it.

The front room. Fridge and microwave.

We chose this hotel because it was near the convention center and was not priced like the convention center recommendations that were insane! It is a boutique hotel with a bar downstairs as well as a pretty decent breakfast. The rooms are quite nice. Ours was a suite with a queen size bed and a front room with a couch, a desk, a refrigerator and microwave. I have no complaints about the room at all. In fact one of the coolest aspects is that it has an old record player with a bunch of old jazz albums we could listen to when we were in the room. Very appropriate for New Orleans! The staff was very friendly when it came time to check in, and my only complaint would be that they were outside smoking pretty much every time we came up to the hotel. Nothing against smokers, but sometimes you need somebody working inside the place to be I'll take care of you! Having said all of that, I will definitely stay here again.

If you're from New Orleans, you know we have many, many boutique hotels-- this is on the list. I stayed one night and I enjoyed it. The staff was very welcoming and my stay was nice. I'm glad I decided to do a small staycation here!! I line the bar and the whole vibe of the place!!

    Jazz, baby!
    Carolyn H.

Great place! Look at the cute turntable that was in the living room of the suite. I listened to jazz each time we came in the room. God, when's the last time you used a turntable? And a Keurig stocked with Mardi gras and Community coffee pods. And for those of us whose eyes are bigger than our stomachs, an in-room fridge and microwave to finish those pricey meals later! Of course, renovated boutiques such as this may have the charm, but lack the big-hotel amenities such as a pool or gym. So there's that. And this one's a little ways from the Quarter, so you may have to Uber back on some tired evenings. Otherwise, a good choice! :)

I was in New Orleans for my Nephew's Wedding and was lucky enough to get a really good rate at the Mercantile Hotel. Located in the Warehouse District near to the Casino and the Convention Center the location was very good. There are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby; the French Quarter is about 1/2 mile away. Mercantile's is a converted Sugar Factory and the decor reflects this. The lobby is small but comfortable. The rooms are all suites; you get a bedroom, bathroom and a sitting room with a sleeper couch, chair and a desk. There is a large flat screen TV in the sitting room and a slightly smaller one in the bedroom. The closet has a programmable safe, ironing board and an iron. A great touch is the record player and the jazz records to provide the proper audio atmosphere. The room decor is nice, with New Orleans pictures, any outer walls are distressed bricks, which adds a really nice feel to the rooms. The bed is comfortable and the bathroom was well laid out, with good water pressure. In the morning Mercantile has a Continental Breakfast with coffee, tea, some pastries and some commercial granola bars. Get there early, as the pastries tend to run out and they only have a limited supply. There is a really nice cafe next door that serves breakfast and dinner. Just down the block is Briquette, which is an upscale lunch and dinner place. Service was good; the staff is very warm and friendly. There can be issues if you use one of the online services and have special requests, so it can help to call the hotel directly to make sure everything is correct. Overall a great stay; this is a really cool hotel in a good location. Probably not the place if you are looking for amenities such as a pool or workout room, but great for a good nights sleep.

Out of three other hotels I had an interest in, I chose The Mercantile for stay because its location, price, and the reviews were in range of what I was looking for while visiting the city to run Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon. Its location sits within a short radius of Lafayette Square which just happened to be the starting line for Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon. Its price was the lowest out of the three I selected that came in a round trip package deal off of Expedia. And as for reviews, Expedia had this hotel rated 4.5 out of 5.0 which is not bad considering that there were 952 reviews. And Yelp had it ranked at a flat 4-star rating. A cool fact about this building is that it was built in 1907 as the Henderson Sugar Refinery. I showed up over 4 hours earlier than the scheduled check in which is listed at 3PM. The employee at the register gave me the option to either leave my backpack behind the desk or wait in the lounge area. Since I already had a booking, the employee immediately connected with the person who I assume is in charge of maintaining the rooms as I headed to the bar area to watch television. I gave it a good hour while hanging out in the bar area until I was informed by the employee that my room is ready. I ended up checking into my room 3 hours before the scheduled check-in time which gave me the opportunity to get settled in sooner. My first impression of the suite was, "Wow! This is freaking amazing!". I certainly felt like a winner after booking what I viewed once I entered the room and looked around. The room met my standards as far as cleanliness. I do realize the hard work that housekeeping does and I'm not one to inspect a room with a white glove to expose flaws. The linen was clean as well as the towels, counter surfaces, floors, and each furniture piece which is all I cared for. And the Wi-Fi internet was easy to connect to with no connectivity issues during my stay. I adored the main room in the suite. It came with a kitchenette area w/ a mini fridge, sink and microwave, workspace, sofa, chair, flat screen television, a record player w/ jazz albums, and a digital concierge known as Angie. During my stay I spent the majority of my time in the main room on the sofa because it felt homely like. I nearly slept on it rather than in the actual bedroom in the bed which came with another flat screen television. The room has a nice vibe! I loved the presence of the distressed brick interior as well as the captures of images around New Orleans. I had no issues whatsoever sleeping in the bed inside of my room. Not once did I wake up during any of the nights of my stay as my head was engulfed in-between pillows. One thing I was not fond of was the water pressure in the toilet. Sure, I did do number two during this visit, but the toilet went to crap after and would not flush entirely, smh! The shower on the other hand was amazing as like many in hotels. The soothing water pressure made me feel not only relaxed, but clean during each usage. I sang Huey Lewis And The News - 'I Want A New Drug' while showering the last day before departing, hehe. As for amenities, I absolutely adored the lounge area! On top of it being decorated with New Orleans art and designs, there was a shuffleboard that kept me entertained in the moment during my tour. As for the fitness center, there was nothing really special about it, it consisted of just a treadmill, a recumbent bike, and a functional trainer machine. There is also a bar! I hung out in it prior to checking-in. It was one of the amenities I had no interest in during my stay, but it did add a nice touch to the hotel. I do not believe I saw any of the guests utilizing it with all of what the area has, as far as places to get alcoholic beverages. If there was access to food, then I may have utilized it. There are plentiful sights, activities, restaurants, and shopping centers within a mile radius from The Mercantile. Some that I enjoyed and experienced were Fulton Street, French Quarter, The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, The New Orleans Ernest N Morial Convention Center, Canal Place, Harrah's, and the Mississippi River Heritage Park. The hotel staff was very helpful during my stay. I did have an issue with my flight being pushed back an extra day. I called the hotel while out and had no issues booking another night's stay. Even though I wanted it for the experience, I did not have any visits from Suga, the resident customer service robot. I believe it was down because I did see Suga off in the corner by the check-in desk. I would book with The Mercantile again because not only did the hotel meet my comfort needs, but its location is within a fitting distance from attractions that have my interest in New Orleans. ~Blessings~ Thomas G

This is marlon! The best clerk ever!

Aw man! I don't even know where to begin. There's just so many hotels with big names you can stay at, and NEVER receive the type of service I got from the Mercantile hotel ever before! I mean it was outstanding from before I step foot in the door. We drove from San Antonio to NoLa and when we arrived EVERY STREET was blocked off due to the parade and couldn't get to our hotel anyway we went. Soon we called the hotel to ask if they could help us, and the BEST CLERK EVER, Marlon, answered and was immediately ready to help us find a way to get to the hotel. After a while of still not being able to direct us he decided to go out of his way to FaceTime us, to see what street we were on and how to navigate us to a back entrance. Never have I received such good customer service before! He really just blew it out of the water and after 2 HOURS of trying to find out way to the hotel, Marlon got us there. The suite was very nice, loved the old time jazz feel vibes. There was a record player which was everything! We spun Jazz from the minute we were in our room til we left. Marlon suggested a really fun tour, of the swamp to feed the gators. Unfortunately, it was cold so we were out of luck there but nonetheless; it was an AWESOME tour. Right up our alley. Loved that a robot came to my door to drop off my toothpaste. It was so stinking cute!!! Lol everything you'd want a robot to be that's gunna take over our jobs! Lolol! If I go back to NOLA I'm 1,000% staying here again!

Ask the Community - The Mercantile Hotel New Orleans, LA

Is there shuttle transport to the hotel from the airport?

No. There are local businesses that offer airport to French Quarter shuttle services but the easiest option is to take Uber or Lyft.

What could you guys tell me about this hotel first off traveling with a senior citizen my mom is it in walking distance to the attractions such as canal place harrah casino. Safe area?

Its in very short distance to those attractions so a walk is possible but not with a senior citizen in my opinion. You can uber for less than $5 however. Its that close. Safe area beautiful hotel

Does the hotel have a cocktail bar?

Hi Shawn! Lucky for you, we built one and it opened recently. What better way to celebrate the new year than with our brand new bar?! We hope to welcome you soon for a cocktail.

Housekeeping and the nightly turndown service were exceptional. We also spent plenty of time at the pool, where the staff and bartender were fantastic. The drinks were great, the food hit the spot, and the Fourth of July pop-up DJ made for a really fun afternoon. The service was so personal that one of the bartenders recognized us by name when we ran into her on the street a few days later. The only miss during our stay was the famous Carousel Bar. We never managed to get seats at the actual carousel during our four nights--which is understandable given how popular it is and being the 4th of July weekend. We did sit just behind it. Unfortunately, the service there was noticeably unfriendly and felt completely out of step with the incredible hospitality we experienced everywhere else in the hotel. That one experience wasn't enough to overshadow an otherwise outstanding stay. Between the beautiful historic décor, unbeatable French Quarter location, easy access to everything, and a staff that truly cares about its guests, Hotel Monteleone absolutely lived up to the hype. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

I don't know why that took out the water, but it did. Noights, elevators, or toilets from 10 pm to 6 am. No emergency plans- people sleeping in the lobby, all restrooms locked, no one with information, no help for those with medical needs, no information and not even a compassionate voice at the front desk. Where was the manager? My husband's CPAP requires electricity. Our phones died. It was a mess. After all New Orleans has been through, you would think they would have better contingency plans.

Paint in the room was chipping, mattress was stained, but overall these were things we could ignore. However, something we couldn't ignore while using the bathroom in the middle of our first night, was that we found we weren't alone. There were 3+ cockroaches hanging out near the tub and a few scurried away before we could kill/photograph them. The next morning we went to the front desk, got our refund and switched hotels. Front desk staff was AWESOME, so kind and quick to help us. However, after we asked to cancel our stay and went back up to the room to get our bags and leave, one of the hotel housekeepers decided to come up to our room and "confront us". She wanted us to show her the cockroaches (that we had killed and flushed) and tried telling us she's never seen a cockroach at Hotel Le Marais before, basically calling us liars. Lol, well, here's some pictures to prove it. Let's ask the audience. Positives: The front desk staff was exceptional. Very helpful, very kind and knowledgeable. It's located close to Bourbon and has a nice courtyard. Negatives: ROACHES IN THE ROOMS, confrontational housekeeper, thin walls.

I reserved this place because of the amenities and they do a great job advertising with beautiful pictures. Downside is it doesn't look as beautiful as the pictures and the pool area is a lot smaller and not as kept up with the property. More like a birdbath than a pool to dip into. Upside is the staff is very friendly, they have a bar they reopened, the air conditioning works great, and room service comes every morning if you'd like. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this place.

The 2 things I care most about when staying in a hotel is a comfortable night's rest and a good bathroom/shower. The bed in our room was the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on in my entire life. It was so mushy that when you laid your head down, you sunk so far into it that your legs were literally 45 degrees above your head. I ended up sleeping upside down in the bed with my head where your feet go in order to feel even remotely comfortable. The pillows were all extremely flat, when you put your head on one it sank so far your face was about 1/2 inch from the mattress. I had to use 3 pillows stacked on each other. I had a stiff back, neck and joints the entire time we were there. The 2nd issue was hot water. The first morning, we attempted to shower, it only got barely luke warm for me and when my husband showered immediately after he only got ice cold water. We stopped at the front desk that morning on our way out for the day and told the woman at the front desk. She said she hadn't received any other complaints so it must be specific to our room and she would send engineering there to look at it. (we were getting hot water in the sink). Later that evening when we returned to our room, we immediately tested the shower again and it was still ice cold. So we went back to the front desk to check if engineering had come. We spoke to the same woman from the morning who acted like it was the first time we were telling her this and she said the exact same thing. I asked if they were going to come ASAP because we needed to shower soon and we couldn't take ice cold showers. She ignored my question and answered the ringing phone. A manager happened to be at the desk and overheard our conversation. He asked what our room number was and said that because of the old building and the pipes the hot water takes longer to get there. He said this was a KNOWN Issue by the staff, management and the owner. He told us to run the shower for AT LEAST 15 to 20 minutes, simultaneously with the sink and it should get hot. He also offered to move us to a different room but when I asked if he could guarantee if we wouldn't have the same problem in that room he couldn't give me a straight answer. We had already unpacked everything and didn't want to go through that hassle without a guarantee. So we went back to the room and let it run for 20 minutes and it eventually got hot. So for the remaining 3 mornings, we had to set our alarms for 30 minutes earlier so we could get up and run our shower before hand. For nearly $300 a night, we felt that this was ridiculous. Old building or not, if its a problem, then either don't put people in those rooms, or get it fixed somehow. Why should anyone be subjected to an ice old shower or an inconvenience to their time because the owner hasn't done anything about it? We visited the hotel Bar, the Bourbon O'bar 3 times during our stay and each time we received TERRIBLE service. None of the bartenders were friendly to us, in fact they were pretty rude. Each time it took them at least 10 minutes to even take our order (by standing there and looking at us and not saying anything). The bar was not busy or crowded any of these times. They would then start making one of our drinks, put it down and make other people's drinks, leave and go into a back room, play on their cell phone, talk to each other, or carry the glass around while doing other things. My husband ordered an old fashioned and the alcohol was sitting in the jar with the ice for over 5 minutes while the bartender carried it around doing other things, causing it to get watered down. When making a cocktail, it should be completed from start to finish without doing other things in the middle. I ordered the Mardi Drop cocktail on 2 different days. The first time, it was actually very good. The 2nd time from a different bartender it was horrible .He also sprinkled probably a tablespoon of cinnamon on top of it (which the first didn't have) which made it nearly undrinkable. I had to stir it into the martini in order to not get a mouthful of cinnamon with each sip. We didn't eat at the hotel restaurant Roux because of the bad Yelp reviews - we felt we could get a better breakfast elsewhere outside the hotel. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel at all unless you don't care about being comfortable or friendly service.

Just be prepared for the wall of noise if you're staying on a Friday and Saturday night and have a room facing Bourbon Street; you will need more than the sound machine and earplugs the hotel provides you. But if you're there to party hard on Bourbon Street at all the touristy bars, then you will be in your element. Depending on the side of the hotel you select when booking your room and the days you choose, you may be able to get away with just a sound machine and earplugs, or you may be getting too old and need to look elsewhere. If you stay on the courtyard side, you should have enough barriers to deflect the nonstop barrage of noise coming from all the bars and clubs on Bourbon Street, especially between Bienville and St. Ann, on a Friday and Saturday night particularly. We had a room on the third floor with a balcony overlooking Bourbon Street that gave us a great view and the opportunity to enjoy wine and cocktails as the festivities picked up steam throughout the afternoons of our stay. The bed was wicked comfortable. The set of drawers had plenty of space to put clothes with a small fridge for keeping drinks cool and leftovers from spoiling. The closet space was ample and was able to fit all of our hang-up clothing and our suitcases. There was a nice lounge chair next to the desk to chill if you didn't want to sit on the balcony. However, the bathroom was cramped and narrow with these weird double doors that could cause trouble if you are going to do business in the middle of the night. The water pressure wasn't great either and if you don't have the curtain positioned right then you're going to have a puddle. Housekeeping did come by to change our linens and provide fresh towels every day, which was appreciated. The front desk was very affable and accommodating, especially with holding out luggage when our room wasn't quite ready yet to check-in. And I liked that there was a security person checking people that were actually staying at the hotel to avoid stragglers, random drunks, and transients from entering. I didn't have the chance to use the pool while I was there, but we were busy walking around the French Quarter to really care. Same went with having anything in the restaurant for food. They did have the little mini mart on the ground floor that worked for when we needed more bottles of water that were larger than the complimentary ones. Accommodations at the hotel were solid, but just know if you stay here, you're experiencing the full Bourbon Street treatment. It is always loud at night, especially, on the weekends.
