Food came out cold like it had been sitting around for 20 minutes. Makes sense because it took like 45 minutes to bring our food. Overpriced overhyped will lose its appeal once the newness wears off. We and another couple heard it was coming and made reservations for Oct 10. The venue is FABULOUS. Beautiful lighting and great seating indoor and out with a great looking bar. Absolutely one of the best I've seen in STL. Service was very good. Plenty of attentive staff. A+ Cocktails ordered were beers, sangria and the Smokey pineapple martini. Martini was just ok. My friend didn't like the Sangria at all The tallow chips were good not great. We had the chorizo fundido. Very cheesy, couldn't taste any chorizo. Chips to dip are necessary but you get 4 soft tortillas so very difficult to eat. Two got the barbacoa tacos and they were both sitting in a puddle of oil. 1 shirt full of oil. The other person attempted to eat with a fork. Baked chicken was average and the other entree was shrimp enchiladas. No visible cheese. Average in taste. Overall BEAUTIFUL restaurant, great staff. Pretentious menu that doesn't hit all the right notes. They make their own tortillas so you would think the place would smell like tortillas but it smelled like shrimp. So disappointed read more

This was my second visit and I can only say good things for this review. Our server, Shawn, was fabulous. He was attentive but did not hover over us. His helpers kept our water glasses filled, gave us extra chips and cleared away our dirty plates quickly. The food was flavorful and original in presentation. I highly recommend the shrimp tacos and my husband says to order the free range chicken! The complimentary chips and salsa were also very good. The restaurant was very busy but the noise level was low. The holiday lights and trees make the environment very festive. Thank you to David for stopping by our table to check on us. A very mixed review here. Our server Shelley was fantastic. The chips were very good, but the guacamole was average. The Chicken Soup was very bland and the steak tacos were bland and tough. The appetizers were excellent-guacamole and fried cheese. The food was great--I enjoyed the Shrimp Tacos and Brussels Sprouts. Others enjoyed their food and Margaritas were not too sweet. Our only complaint was the host/hostess stand--a complete chaotic mess. There were several couples in front of us and it took forever for two hostesses to seat each party leaving the stand unattended. Unsure if they were untrained, understaffed, etc.; however, trying to figure out what was going on; i.e., can we go to the patio for a cocktail before we are seated for our reservation? Who knows? We asked and she disappeared and never returned. We finally just walked to the outdoor patio. After being seated at high tops in the outside bar, we enjoyed our drinks and dinner. I'm so glad we tried this new restaurant -- everything from the atmosphere to the decor to the service was absolutely fantastic. The space is gorgeous, warm, and thoughtfully designed, and every single staff member we interacted with was friendly and attentive. You can tell a lot of care went into creating both the food and the overall experience. The location is great and I truly loved everything about the evening... except for one small surprise: the Presidente Margarita. At most Mexican restaurants, that's a classic top-shelf margarita, so I ordered it without thinking twice. When the bill came, I realized it was $50 -- which is quite a jump compared to the other margaritas that were around $12-13. To be fair, the drink was beautifully presented with edible flowers and glitter, and the menu did list the price -- I just didn't notice it at the time. It's absolutely my responsibility to read more carefully, but I think a little extra notation on the menu (or maybe a quick heads-up from the server when someone orders it) could save guests from a surprise like that. That said, I'd still recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly -- the food, service, and ambiance were all exceptional, and I'll definitely be back. We went to this restaurant last night and it had such a lovely atmosphere. The music was amazing and really set the mood, I honestly wanted to stay just for the music and the overall vibe. The service was excellent, definitely a 10/10. I felt really taken care of, and when I mentioned that my short rib was too bitter, they were very understanding and quickly replaced it for me, which I appreciated. The food, however, was a bit disappointing. The guacamole was good and the salsa was great, but the Wagyu steak with grilled pineapple was cold, and the chips that came with it were inconsistent, some were even raw. The flavors just didn't work for me. Overall, I loved the atmosphere and service, but I wish the food matched that level. read more

Just opened a week or two back so we decided to stop by for Happy Hour. We were surprised that we were able to get right in given the hype of the place. The restaurant itself is absolutely gorgeous and very spacious. A great indoor/outdoor space, and huge dining area and bar. The service was very friendly and helpful. We got started with a couple of Spicy Margaritas which were really delicious. And we also split a skinny margarita which was good. We weren't served any chips and salsa, which was fine, but we would like to try them at some point. We ordered the Barbacoa Tacos and Cameron enchiladas. The enchiladas were very good, and both dishes came with beans and rice, which were good. Regarding the Barbacoa Tacos, they had almost no flavor whatsoever. Nothing unique about them. They really were extremely dry, and they were very hard to eat with your hands because the "taco" just fell apart and made a mess. Ended up just using a fork. I would not order them again. There were a few other things on the menu that we will want to try when we go back. But the menu itself is somewhat limited. Not a lot of creative options for an upscale place. Overall it was a good experience, and we're looking forward to going back at some point with some friends. read more

This was disappointing and maybe we caught them on an off night. I rarely go out on Mondays and there was no one here. Our server was charming and the manager came out and corrected a drink that we didn't care for and they think they left out an ingredient. The building is gorgeous with ample parking. Inside there's a beautiful bar with lots of tv's for sports. We ate in the main dining area. I felt the lighting was a little bright for dinner service, especially with so few people seated. We tried the smoked new fashion and they did it tableside at my request. It was delicious! Best cocktail overall: Smoky Pineapple-Tini! My date let me build the meal so we started with a tuna carpaccio that was hands down the best thing we had. The texture of the tuna with the spice and citrus all married so well. Our entrees were a scallop and shrimp offering over peppers and onions. You can't go wrong with scallops but for $40, 6 shrimp and 3 scallops seemed a little overpriced. We got a wagyu ribeye and while I LOVE steak and all the meats, we were both slightly underwhelmed. The steak was cold and not as tender as I'd have expected. I'd prefer to have it served whole and let me cut. The flavor was amazing and I'd try it again. Presentation wasn't as upscale as I expected. I personally did not care for the rice nor beans that came with each entree. The rice reminded me of microwave pouch rice vs fresh cooked rice. It was beautiful and I'd like to try it again but I was slightly disappointed and think I was the only real Mexican going on there last night. read more

We decided to try this place on a whim. Huge mistake!! They sat us at a tiny high-top table in the bar area. It was comically small for four people, even our server apologized and joked about it when bringing out the food. We ordered queso, and they brought two large baskets of tortillas and only one small dish for the queso. When they finally removed the empty queso bowl, they left both tortilla glasswares, making the already cramped table even worse. The water glasses were absurdly small. After just a couple sips, servers kept interrupting our conversation to refill them, it happened constantly. This place clearly caters to people who care more about being seen than about eating good food. My wife ordered a taco entrée and said the filling had the texture of vomit and absolutely no flavor. My shrimp enchiladas tasted overwhelmingly fishy, that was the only flavor that came through. The kids got chicken smothered in red sauce that was poured all over everything; they barely touched it. All this coupled with the high prices, I don't see how this place will ever stay in business. I guess when the family that owns it has deep pockets, you can afford to keep something like this afloat. The only positive was our server was nice, but it was his first week. When he asked how everything was, my wife (being polite) said it was "good." Right after that, they tried to sell us a discounted gift card. It was painfully awkwardly declined (will never return to this place again!!) While waiting for the check, we overheard the table behind us ask to mix and match tacos (one of each kind, like many places allow). The server said they don't do substitutions or mix-and-match at all , so heads up if that matters to you. Overall, this feels like a restaurant for people who want to be seen, not a decent meal. I honestly hope it fails soon so something better can take its place. My wife pointed out restaurant across the street that's under construction ,all their other locations are excellent, so we're excited for that one. read more

Visited The Mexican STL last night , for the first time. Beautiful space. Stylish upscale interior, with a great vibe. We were immediately impressed with the service. Amanda ,Brittany and Findlay were outstanding ! Answered all our questions in detail .Service was prompt. All very personable. My wife and I both ordered the Chicken Enchiladas. They are excellent. Lots of tender moist chicken wrapped in the house made tortillas, smothered in a perfectly seasoned spicy cream sauce. In total it made for a great evening. We look forward to returning. read more

Amazing drinks! We got the Queso Fundido for an app which was ok, pretty bland. I got the chicken Enchiladas which were good but while beautiful the sauce is very tomatoey reminding me of Italian food. Ambiance a 4-5: The place was well designed and looks great. It has a very high-end look which is a great change for the area. Service 3-4: Service is decent. Drinks 4: I feel like the margaritas were great. Two downsides: very small glasses that look like single old fashioned size and $14 a pop. So although the cocktails are good they are very pricey and should at least be in a taller/bigger glass. Food. Not sure if it is true but I read in one of the reviews that the chips were fried in beef tallow (basically animal fat!) . Gross and so unhealthy. I won't get those again if that is true. Overall the food I had was "ok". It wasn't amazing, it wasn't bad, it was just ok and the prices were high. Vibe: Didn't feel like a fun crowd or bar scene. Suggestion: We're in the heartland. Love the upscale vibe but read the room/area. Folks want more traditional Mexican dishes, Reasonable drink prices and a lively environment. I think you can still keep it upscale and have a more elevated traditional menu. If you keep going in the food direction you're headed you will lose a lot of your potential customers. You still have time to right the ship, but the food clearly is not hitting so rehaul that menu, and make it more traditional with an elevated spin. Dump the beef tallow for frying stuff. It just not a good look. Drop those cocktail prices a bit. I love your ambiance but the drink prices/small glasses and meh food is going to tank you. I want you to win! read more

Because The Mexican STL has such a great ambiance and energy, I have high hopes for its future. However it is not yet hitting all the notes it should to be on my list of favorites. I have been there three times so far, trying it for lunch, once for afternoon happy hour and apps, and once for dinner. It became clear that this place is still working on aspects of its offering. Front desk experience - all three times we had reservations, yet even with five people at the host desk, there was so much confusion and miscommunication that just getting a table was time consuming and overly complicated, even though the place wasn't that busy. Why do they need five people doing this function? And why is assigning a guest with a reservation a table so puzzling to this group of hosts? Drinks - they had some good options on the menu. But there was a problem with consistency. My first spicy margarita was good. When I ordered another it was undrinkable it was so over-spiced. The waitress admitted a different bartender made it and she was concerned when she saw how much jalapeño syrup was used. Then why serve it? And don't they follow recipes? But she politely removed if from our check. Food - having been there three times with groups and tasting many things on the menu, I will hope it's a work in progress. A few dishes were good. But some were surprisingly bland or under-salted for a Mexican restaurant. The more Mexican the dish, the more disappointing. The chef clearly needs some help understanding that elevating Mexican food doesn't mean taking out all the spice. So order the short ribs. I enjoyed a few dishes but not enough to recommend them. Value - portion size is sometimes limited. Combine that with the factors already mentioned and I didn't feel the price matched the experience. They voluntarily took things off the check when the table agreed they were not well prepared. But that's still disappointing. Overall - it takes new restaurants time to find their way. I hope this one steps up their game to match their prices. I plan to go back in the future after some time to try again. But the mixed bag they offer now doesn't make me want to run back again. If the feeling of the place weren't modern and intriguing I would probably not return. read more

We had the BEST time at The Mexican STL! We started with the queso fundido (pure cheesy perfection) and the roasted Brussels sprouts, which were packed with flavor. My friends ordered classic margaritas and said they were fantastic -- super refreshing and balanced. For dinner, I had the camaron enchiladas and the handmade dough was absolutely perfect. Being 7-months pregnant, I was bracing for heartburn, but somehow this dish was both rich and flavorful without upsetting me at all -- a HUGE win (IYKYK!). Two of my girlfriends ordered the surf & surf and their plates looked equally incredible. Service was also top-notch -- our server Trint struck the perfect balance of attentive and helpful without ever being overbearing. And Chef Tyler's attention to detail really shines through in every dish. I can't wait to come back after baby arrives to try the tuna tostada and sashimi! Loved the guacamole (I'm normally not a fan), my seasonal cocktails each time (sugar skull the first and the mistletoe margarita this time) were so delicious! Beautiful restaurant and the staff is friendly, but unfortunately the food hasn't quite hit the mark for me. I've visited twice. Once shortly after opening, and again several weeks later. Both were similar experiences. The tortillas were dry and tended to fall apart, the meat on the Asada Tacos lacked flavor, and the cocktails were a bit hit or miss.
