3.5 stars. After my last visit, I'm torn. The food we had that night was mediocre with the best dish being the Caesar salad with anchovies. My filet au poivre and my husband's French dip were forgettable at best. My steak was overcooked (ordered medium rare and came out close to medium well). With such a lean cut of meat, the overcooking of it ruined it. The Au poivre sauce which likely had cognac needed to be cooked off as it was extremely bitey (and salty). There was no peppery flavor at all. My cocktail, on the other hand, was delicious and well made (old fashioned) and our server was efficient, helpful, and timely. Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere. I've had the crab cake before so I didn't get it this time, and it's as good as people say. It is huge and can be shared with at LEAST two people. I'd likely visit again but I'll probably stay away from these two entrees next time. read more

It's perfect for a girls' night, date night, or just treating yourself. Our server was AMAZING and handled our table so seamlessly, which made the experience even better. On the Saturday I went, there were four people waiting prior to opening. The bartender and entire staff was great, respectful, polite, attentive. The bread and butter was so good. The butter had olive oil and spices with it. One of the best bread dishes I had. The crab cake was large and full of crab. Very flavorful. The Caesar salad was fresh and tasty. Not overdressed and each element well put together. The filet was amazing. Soooooo tender and seasoned well. The sauce was ok, I like having sauce but the taste was just ok for me. Today we shared the Tavern Onion Rings and Crab-cake for starters. Full portion of freshly battered Rings with an Aioli dipping sauce and ketchup. The Crab-Cake was generous with Fresh Maryland Blue Crab served atop a special Remoulade sauce (slightly salty today). I actually enjoyed the Aioli dip sauce more with the Crab cake. And the Rings made a good shareable. Next time I'd like to try some Oysters or Shrimp Cocktail. For dinner, we ordered the Scallops Special entree, Steak Frites, an extra Crabcake and the French Dip Sandwich. Each dish was thoroughly enjoyed and tasty! And I can honestly say this was one of the BEST French Dip Roast Beef sandwiches I've ever eaten; generous portion, tender beef, havarti cheese on a warmly baked sesame roll with Au jus and creamy horseradish sauce ... oh and the fresh pommes frites fantastic too - YUM! Don't think you could go wrong with any menu item here. Lastly, we ordered the Creme Brûlée dessert (Bday gal's fave)! Went on a Wednesday night and it was packed--definitely make a reservation. You might get lucky with a seat at the bar, but I wouldn't count on it. They really use every bit of space, so it feels a little tight, and the noise level is higher than you'd expect for a high-end spot. The service was excellent--attentive, polished, and detail-oriented. They kept our bottle chilled on ice and refilled glasses right on time. Still, the overall ambiance didn't quite match that level of refinement. The space feels packed and a bit loud, so while the staff delivers fine-dining service, the setting leans more energetic and bustling than elegant. Cocktails were great and well-made. I started with the shrimp cocktail--good, fresh, but nothing to rave about. The Caesar salad was solid, and as you'd expect at a place like this, anchovies are an option--though our server didn't seem aware of that at first. I had the much-talked-about burger; cooked perfectly to temperature and you could taste the quality of the meat, but it leaned a bit dry overall--maybe could use a touch of sauce for balance. Fries were excellent, crispy, and disappeared quickly from the table. For dessert, we shared the sundae, which the server said was "big enough to share." That was an understatement--you could easily split it among six people. Generous ice cream, plenty of toppings, and a fun way to end the meal. However I found it to be very good, service was excellent, place a little crowded and all round good food The space is very cozy and has a nice upscale ambience, it is a little bit tight moving around. We came on a Wednesday my husband and another couple. We tried several cocktails, my favorite was the Negroni blanco as a big Negroni fan. For the good, we got shrimp cocktail, which were big and done well. We also got a Caesar and a wedge salad. Wedge was super interesting and delicious with a perfectly cooked slice of bacon on top. My husband enjoyed being able to get anchovies on top of his Caesar. I got the swordfish and my husband the burger. The swordfish dish had good flavors and a large portion of a tasty orzo dish but fish was a little dry. The burger seemed delicious and honesty the fries it came with were a some of the best I have ever had. We finished sharing an ice cream sundae with the four of us, wow this could feed 6, it's huge! Reserve it through Resy, keep your eyes open. But it is definitely worth it. It's a hidden little spot. When you are walking down, Wydown, you will miss it if you blink! And keep in mind it is street parking only. So on the weekends and busy dinner times... Allow extra time to find a spot. Everything on the menu is better than the next. Service is impeccable. Their martini is to die for. I could eat here every night for the rest of my life and be totally satisfied. It is a very tiny place, that's why it's so hard to get into. I've been wanting to try Wright's Tavern for a long time. I snagged a reservation and I was delighted! First of all SERVICE. It's tip top for StL. Priscilla (proper spelling) was our server and she was perfect. She gave us time but not too much time and answered all of our questions without seeming like we bothered her by asking. She was so knowledgeable about every topic in which we inquired. She was so so so good. Super kind and very attentive. Her assistants for the evening didn't let us get our water glasses very empty until they were refilled. The hostess was at her station when we arrived with a kind smile and sweet greeting. Every single person we encountered was so ready to serve and help. My hubs dropped a knife, he had a new one within 10 seconds, same with his napkin. AMBIANCE: simple, sweet and charming in the most delightful way. Good pencils and paper covering on the table to doodle and sketch and play games if you'd like. Perfect lighting. Perfectly quaint. Great first date night place or special occasion or just a delightful Tuesday night dinner. ;) FOOD & DRINK: Wow. Hubby had an Old Fashion and I had a Pink Lady. We both loved them. After a couple bites, he agreed he wouldn't change anything about it because it was so so so good. He ordered me a little 10 year port to finish off (my fav) and it was perfect. PERSONAL PREFERENCES: The bathroom! It was clean. The light was on a dimmer () which was nice and there is a optional fan switch. The towels are linen-like meaning you can use one and get your hands entirely dry which is less waste and more sanitary. All said, we couldn't have hoped for a better experience. If you blink, you'll miss it, which makes stepping inside the warm, upscale atmosphere part of the experience. The ambience enhances your meal. It's such a small detail, but I love how after entering the restaurant, you walk slightly up to enter the dining room. The perched, limited seating, the dim lighting, and the exposed oyster bar make it feel an intimate, cozy NYC-style dinner. On the tables, each covered with white paper, sits a cup of freshly sharpened pencils. I wish I didn't have to limit myself the both times I've gone, but the Martini & The Car, Wright's Caesar Salad, the Steak Frites or Filet Mignon Au Poivre, and the Tavern Hot Fudge Sundae. Nothing new to add however I did try the crab cake, which is a meal in itself, loaded with crab meat expertly done. Had the top round roast beef again with fries, couldn't finish it because of the huge crab cake (that's a good problem, now I lunch for tomorrow). The bread, as simple as it may sound, with the oil and butter was also a standout - the simple touch of sea salt in the middle of the butter and oil added a lot of flavor to the bread plate. We heard great things about this place and we were excited we finally got a reservation. We arrived on time, were seated promptly and greeted by our server. We treated ourselves one cocktail and one mocktail, the crab cake, Cesar salad, NY strip special (grass fed) along with pomme frites. Service was ok - warm in a performative way. The drinks were watered down. I've never had a watered down mocktail before. The steak and pomme frites were warm, not hot. To clarify, the plate was hot, the food was not. Not worth the price of the special. Were the staff distracted by all of the social media photos/ videos being taken? Maybe? It was distracting and took focus away from the whole experience. It took us over a year to get our reservation. We ended up FINALLY got in on a Monday at 8:30 and it was worth the wait. It IS small, but I think that's what gives it its charm. Okay, I get the hype now! This place has been on my list for a long time but getting a decent reservation has taken forever. I finally got one a few days ago and it all makes sense. Ricky was phenomenal - always checking in, offering great recommendations and helping us make the best selections. We started off with drinks: the house espresso martini (10/10, just wish it was larger cause it was so good) and the old fashioned. The bread and butter was delicious. Fresh fresh bread - still so warm it was tough to hold when cutting! For entrees, we went with steak frites and the housemade canestri pasta. Need to update again because Wright's Tavern simply does not miss. There is something about that french dip. It has me in a chokehold. I can't help but order it every time. And, every time it gets better--which I did not think was possible. Everybody knows the food at Wright's is great. The macaroni, onion rings, burger, steak, shrimp scampi. Basically, every single menu item. So, I do not want to Belabor that point. I do, however, want to indulge you in the magic that Wright's is beyond their food. Wright's, for me, feels like home. The meticulousness is magnificent. The art work is elegant, yet accessible. The paper and pencils on the tables makes it feel just a bit whimsical, while still feeling elegant. Yet, you feel welcome no matter your background, outfit, status, etc. it just feels like anyone can walk in and be exactly who is supposed to be there. Every server shows genuine interest in serving you. Always willing to chop it up, they are dressed to the nines, but remain beautifully folksy. It's intimate. But, also a place you can take the family. Wright's is an enigma. Artistically balancing upscale with casual, high end with affordable, intimate with friendly, professional with whimsy. Maybe none of this makes sense. I may just be rambling. But, beyond the generous portions of a simplified--yet perfected--traditional steakhouse menu is a cozy space we all can call home, even if just for the evening. The only thing "bad" about this place is how hard it is to get in. We have an alert set for cancellations and we go whenever we get the notice. Love the quiet swanky ambiance. Didn't really deter us from bringing our own couple bottles. Tonight we loved the new menu. We started with the Cesar salad, crab-cake (so good) and the scallops special. Unfortunately the scallops were undercooked and not up to their usual standards. But the whipped butternut squash and pumpkin seeds were delicious.
