We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. It was good but nothing major to rave about. The drinks were quite nice and tasty. What they offered on the menu did have a load of good choices. Tables scattered throughout as well as bar seating. The owner, Alex, is always hustling and you can really tell he takes pride in his bar. He's hands-on, making sure everything runs smoothly and that everyone feels at home. It's clear that he loves what he does. One of the things about The Midway is that Alex lets you bring in your own food! While the bar doesn't serve food, you're welcome bring in whatever food you want. The Mexican restaurant next door is a big win--they'll even bring your food over to the bar for you, which is super convenient if you're craving some tacos or burritos while you drink. For music lovers, the bar has a jukebox where you can play your favorite tunes, but if no one's playing, Alex's playlist is always on point. Whether you're into classic rock, pop, or something else, the music adds to the laid-back atmosphere. Sports fans are definitely in the right place too! Alex always has baseball, basketball, hockey, or any major sport playing on the TVs. He even shows UFC and boxing fights without charging a cover, which is a rarity at most bars.
