We just had gotten our drinks and all was well until we had to get going to catch our movie. One of the bartenders said "you leaving already?" and then we saw them all exchange glances as we closed the tab. We both got oddly super sick as the night went on and couldn't attribute it to food as we didnt have any from this bar or after. They have candles going and a wide amount of music they play. They have nice dart boards where you can challenge people in different country's and a nice pool table with decent sticks. It was a dead give away that Styrofoam was used because of the flat surfaces at right angles. Hey recycle, reuse right? I like it. Environmentally conscious tiki dive bar. When we first went in I got heckled by people that I assume were locals. They thought it was funny that I was taking pictures as though the dive were a tourist destination. Little did they know. I also learned about these old fashioned stove/bbq thingys that used to be around in all the bars. I guess now it's totally considered a health and safety hazard so they don't use it any longer. What a shame. I bet some killer steaks came off of that grill. They also had karaoke! Yay! I was sooo gonna give them negative stars when I thought you had to pay by the song to sing. However, I found that it is free at the Hawaiian Room. I guess the KJ just charges at some other, way lamer location. What really makes this place a must see dive? The pièce de résistance was their "B" rating from the health department posted prominently behind the bar. Don't believe me? Check out the photo I posted on the review. But who really cares right? Still, I appreciated being out with friends. One thing I really liked was the hamburger stand behind the bar--the guy working it was super nice, which made the experience even better. As with any dive bar, there's always some interesting people-watching, and this night definitely delivered. At one point, an angry wife came in yelling at her husband... so yeah, never a dull moment.I was also kind of impressed with myself for staying out that late. Usually I don't, but this time I did--and I did it as the sober driver. There's always something fascinating about being the one who stays clear-headed and gets everyone home safely.
