Loved loved Hao Peng You. If you're looking for a chill spot for some amazing cocktails, cool vibe and decor (albeit risque), here you are. Kind of that prohibition era Chinatown feel. Lynn (sp) was very helpful and attentive. The Hua Sheng with the peanut butter whiskey was an unexpected delight. The perilla highball was totally my vibe (herbal, bubbly). Descriptions on the menu were on point salty plum and lychee negroni were also on point. Coming back for sure.

Cute and intimate restaurant with lovely decor. Food was good, they don't have real plates to eat of off, they do this to save on cost. That also has two speakeasy's within the restaurant itself, we tried HPY. The vibes are fire

What a great spot in downtown Long Beach! Midnight Oil is a bar collective, where you can get drinks and dishes. This review is for Hao Peng You. There are three bar options - The Apothecary, the Lagoon (tiki style bar), and Hao Peng You Hand Laundry (hidden speakeasy) - these all harken back to theme locations in the days of yore. We opted to step into the early 1900s in Hao Peng You Hand Laundry, and take a sip of some awesome cocktails. When we arrived on a Friday night for drinks, it was busy, but the service was on point, directing us to where seating was available. Lots of photo ops. Good spot for after dinner drinks, and each experience unique. Reservations recommended.

The ambiance was nice and the decor inside definitely added to the experience. Our bartender was very attentive and welcoming. The drinks were unique, and the flavor descriptions on the menu were very helpful.

NICE AMBIANCE AND DRINKS This speak easy is located in the restaurant of midnight oil. I made reservations the day of and was glad they were available. Don't get caught staring at the portraits. Weirdo haha. The lychee Negroni was sweet but strong. The two Hua Shengs were interesting . They came in tin cans and were mixtures of peanut butter whiskey. Drinks were great and the service was quick. We only stayed for one round but I'm glad we had the opportunity to enjoy something this new. Felt like I was in a different time period.

    Yummy drinks!

The lighting and the music created amazing vibes. I ordered the Hua Sheng made of. ming river baijiu, skrewball peanut butter whiskey, & penut. This drink was a 8.5/10 for my liking, after mashing the mint into the drink I liked it a bit more. It was very refreshing with a light peanut flavor. My friend ordered the Salty Plums drink. This drink contained yebiga plum brandy, supasawa, peach syrup, peach bitters, clarified soy sauce. This was a 100/10 for me. Very light but sweet, the peach flavor was not artificial at all! I tend to find that peach flavored liquor has a weird aftertaste but this did not, it was a hit! Made a friend that night SHOUT OUT PAMELA! The service was exceptional and I will be back for sure!

The space formerly occupied by Rosemallows is now occupied by Midnight Oil, a restaurant and collective of three themed spaces. If you want to read a write up, Long Beach Current has a nice article. (If you cut and paste, note the spaces on either side of the .com.) https://lbcurrent .com /artslife/2025/03/24/downtowns-newest-culinary-experience-offers-three-ways-to-escape/ This venue is located at the intersection of Long Beach Blvd (x) E 3rd St. There is a lot of public parking (structures) nearby, so parking and security shouldn't be an issue. The main entrance faces Long Beach Blvd. The main room is The Apothecary, themed as a Chinese medicinal herb store. Two smaller rooms are: Hao Peng You Hand Laundry, themed as a Chinese speakeasy or opium den; and a tiki bar. I am posting my experience here, as I spent more time in Hǎo Péngyou (although there is a separate Yelp entry for The Apothecary). There are six seats at the bar, and a number of tables in this small space. The decoration is nice; a lot more elaborate than a lot of themed bars, nowadays. The house has all of the ingredients for standard cocktails; but they have their own proprietary concoctions as well. You can access the menu of house cocktails via QR reader. Some of the selections on the menu were faded out and had no corresponding price. I assume these items were temporarily unavailable. On this visit, I tried both the Perilla Highball ($16) and the Chinese Vacation ($16). I would recommend the Chinese vacation, if you enjoy the taste of pineapple and citrus, and want the juice to mask the taste of alcohol. The Perilla Highball is good if you prefer an herbal taste (licorice and mint). Both drinks were mixed well, tasty and refreshing. My friends are less adventurous, so I visited by myself. But I image this would make a nice place for a date night or group outing; or if you simply want an interesting change of scene. Visiting one venue, you can have two or three different atmospheres.

If you don't mind being super close to people next to you, this place has an amazing atmosphere and many things to look at while you yap. Hopping between the different themes of the bar keeps a night-out interesting. Almost like a mini barhopping experience.

Came here for a private event and immediately was like wait... this place is so cute. It has that hidden speakeasy energy that makes you feel like you found a little secret spot. I ordered a Taiwanese beer and the spring rolls, and both were so good. Honestly, I'd come back for the vibe alone.

    Gabrielle S.

This speakeasy was such a great experience! You do need reservations, so I highly recommend booking in advance. If you don't have one, you can always grab a reservation at the main restaurant and enjoy drinks at the bar while waiting for availability...it's worth it! The drinks were very good and crafted with care, and even the small bites were delicious. The atmosphere was amazing...cozy and full of character. The staff was friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even better. Definitely a spot I'd come back to!

Honestly thought it was the bar that we came inside. First impression, why did we need reservations.... Since we didn't know the hidden entrance. Well, it's a cool concept once we entered. There's a dress code so be advised. What I found out was the entrance of the speakeasy was through a phone booth that next to the pool table of Roxanne's bar. Once reservations is made, you'll received an email with a password to enter. Enter phone booth and to connect to the inside and they'll open the door for you. We had the first reservations I believe they opened at 7pm. We were the first group to arrive. As it was my first time, we had ordered bar food and were waiting for it inside the main bar. So half an hour was used from our time limit. The speakeasy, dark and moody but perfect for the place. Special crafted cocktails by the bartenders which were great. They also have food as well, found out later. We did try the meat pie, which it was just ok. Basically an empanadas, the pickle veggies accompanied it was my favorite. It was good but nothing major to rave about. The drinks were quite nice and tasty. What they offered on the menu did have a load of good choices. Tables scattered throughout as well as bar seating. There's a piano which maybe used for live music. Overall, the moody speakeasy vibe was great. Friendly staff and bartender made some great drinks. What we had to snack on, the meat pie was just ok. They're very strict with the time limits. Once it's reached they'll let you know.

It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

We walked in and were greeted immediately, and then brought upstairs. The decor on the way up was awesome. The old school nature, with paintings and abstract vintage pieces.. love. It felt like we were in an old industrial building. We were surprised that it was pretty empty when we got up there. We sat at the bar, and love the decor upstairs too. When we…read moregot there it was a bit crowded but hey that is the nature of the game sometimes when going out to bars. So that didn't bother me too much. Me and my girls were able to get 3 seats at the bar. Like much of the other reviews. Service was slow and it took a long time to get a drink. However, as the night went on the crowd grew bigger and there were only 2 servers so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. That alone is not why I gave this place 1 star. I have came to this bar a few times in the past. It has been a couple of years since I have been back but my past experiences had been pleasant. At first everything was cool. Even with service being slow me and my girls were just talking and vibing with each other and those around us. We met some pretty cool people there. They have a small dance floor and we had a few drinks in us so went dancing. It was a great time. We ended up getting warm from the dancing and wanted to get a breather outside. We saw the door to the patio was open and people were outside. So we walked out and were just talking. One of my crew was smoking a cigarette. Then 2 of the staff members came out furious completely bypassing the other tables of people sitting outside and came directly to us. They started screaming and cussing at us saying we weren't supposed to be outside. One of them said "isn't it obvious can't you read?!" One of my friends said "no wasn't obvious" and my sister in law was telling them to calm down and that we would go inside. She told them that they were being incredibly rude because they were people outside and we thought it was open. As we went inside they still berated us. Two grown men yelling and cussing at us now from inside the bar. So we had hand enough and talked back because we were not going to be verbally attacked at a place that we spent money and our time at. We ended up deciding to leave and as we decided to leave, they followed us out and slammed the door on us and said that we weren't allowed in. Still yelling and cussing at us through the gated door. I started filming shortly around this time because I felt unsafe. Then they started mocking us saying "now look they are going to leave us a bad review." and I said yes we are because this experience was horrifying. I asked was because of our race? (because we were a diverse group of women). It went from two grown men yelling at us to silence. I want to make this clear. Though there were other people sitting outside that night. Lighter skinned people. We were the only ones targeted. No other individual outside was treated this way and no other staff intervened. If you are a woman. If you are of color, do not come here. We are not welcome.

Go right at the bottom of the stairs and there is a little walkway where you see a very cool tiki display. It you stay there long enough, the lights will flash and you will hear thunder. Walk a little further and go through the door to enter. I was blown away by the atmosphere and build. Kudos to Bamboo Ben! It is dimly lit with a ton of cave wall, bamboo, thatch, netting, tiki lights, floats, skulls, tikis, and other décor. The bar is loaded with bottles and looks great with dark blue and green backlighting. The bar top is wood with deep cutouts that are filled with clear epoxy. The booths in the main dining area are little tiki huts and even have clouds overhead. There was great tiki music playing the whole time. A few times an hour a thunderstorm hits. The lights dim, lightning flashes with thunder sound effects, and red lights illuminate cracks in the floor that looks like lava veins. There is also a photo-op "Pele's Throne" which is a big lava rock surrounded chair. We sat at the bar and had the coconut shrimp appetizer ($12). The shrimp were breaded and cooked well, and had a coconut sprinkle on top. The spicy dipping sauce complemented the shrimp well. I started out with the Drunken Monkey (Makers Mark 46, Jamaican rum, banana liqueur, cinnamon, allspice, Angostura bitters, normally $19, $17 during happy hour). It was somewhat bourbon forward with a little funk from the Jamaican rum. I definitely got the cinnamon notes with a little banana and allspice in the background. She started out with the El Capitan Hook (Del Maguey mezcal, pineapple, banana liqueur, Luxardo cherry liqueur, lime, $17, $15 during happy hour). This was smoke forward with light pineapple and banana flavor. I had the Hula burger ($18) which was very good with a lot of different flavors from the various toppings. It came with a decent amount of fries, and was a filling plate. She had the pineapple bowl fried rice and added with BBQ pork ($17 + $5 for pork add-on). It is served in half of a scooped out pineapple and had a good amount of rice with pork and green onions on top. It had a good mix of teriyaki sauce on the rice and BBQ sauce on the pork. Next, I had the Rum Runner (coconut and blended dark rums, banana liqueur, raspberry, grenadine, pineapple, orange, lime, $18, $15 during happy hour). It was very pineapple and coconut forward which overpowered all of the other ingredients. She also had the Let That ManGo (white rhum agricole, coconut, mango, lemon, $18, $16 during happy hour). The primary flavors here were mango with some grassiness from the agricole. We were here from about 6pm to 8pm on a Wednesday night and it was pretty dead with only a few other people in the place the whole time. They do have a stage in the back with live music acts, so it is probably busier when there is entertainment and on weekends. Our first bartender was Alex who was nice but we barely talked with him. Manager Pedro took over the bartender duties later on and we had a great time chatting with him. Service was great from both of them. The drinks are a few dollars above average, but if you come during happy hour, the drinks are several dollars off. Happy hour is currently all day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, and Thursday through Saturday from 5pm to 8pm. The food was good, the drinks were ok to good, and the atmosphere was great. Normally, this would probably be a one and done, but I really liked the build and would like to come back when it is busier, maybe on a weekend.
