We went here around 4pm on a weekday and were the only table seated. The atmosphere is nice, and the place smelled super clean. The proprietor was very helpful with ordering, we started with two different soups. Both were really spicy. I'm normally a fan of spicy and almost never think it's too hot, but the Monks is in a category by itself. I managed to eat everything, but it was close. One thing I really like here is the variety of vegan options on the current menu. They're still figuring out what will be on final menu, but there are plenty of cauliflower and tofu dishes that can take one of their signature sauces. One star deducted because the menu is so difficult to decipher. They are so many great choices, but it's impossible to know what they are without someone telling you what they are. read more

We tried their: 1. veggie momos - very flavorful! 2. Manchow soup - amazing! 3. An appetizer - cant recall the name but ask for the cream cheese grilled skewers - they are to die for!!! 4. I told the owner my favorite Indian dish is a spicy vindaloo chicken and he said he was going to make me something special creamy and spicy (not on the menu) - i hope he never gets rid of the plate - i loved it!! 5. Wok tossed hakka - chicken medium spice it was very flavorful and very fresh!!! 6. Tried their garlic and bullet naan. Garlic one was my favorite but both very good. Over all if you are looking for something full of flavor and spicy - this is a great place to come!! Prices are reasonably priced. We paid less than $60 for all of the items above. Still have enough for tomorrow! I wish i had taken pictures of everything but it was too good to wait! I am a sucker for fried rice and would love to try theirs next time!! After hearing (and reading) so much about this place, decided to pay a visit on a Saturday evening. The bistro style sitting is perfect, gives you an impression of a place which puts food quality ahead of everything else (specially when you need one). Started with hot and sour soup, which was great, maybe a tad bit oily. This was followed by dry chicken Manchuria, which could really use some salt. For the mains, ordered wok tossed hakka noodles, burnt garlic fried rice, green chili chicken and Chilli pepper fish (wanted to try as many varieties since this was my first time). Hakka noodles tasted like it was made by some novice for a quick evening snack, green chili chicken tasted strange but chili pepper fish was the one I liked most! After seeing 4.5 rating reviews for this restaurant I thought of giving a try and ordered three items 1. Drums of heaven /price 13 dollars and in the box I got 3 drumsticks and two wings there are not total drumsticks I don't know why they named it so when they are giving it like this and they are super oily no taste .2 second item is burnt garlic chicken fried rice price 11 dollars and even this dish turned out to be super oily 3. Last Vijayawada chicken biryani which is 14 dollars very expensive compared to biryani pot, Godavari and others and taste is not at all 14 dollars worthy and same as usual full of oil .. finally I ended up paying 45 dollars for this oily dinner meal . My genuine and honest suggestion is please don't spend money on this restaurant you will end-up being disappointed for sure . read more

What a mixed bag this place is. There's so much fusion potential here but the promise of my first visit was overshadowed by the manager almost forcing some of his recommendations on us. I had asked him to tell us which among two curry choices was more popular and on that note he somehow took the liberty of trying to dictate our whole order. He pretty much told us to avoid Monk's special noodles, which we really wanted, on the basis that it's a hit or miss acquired taste. Instead he chose Hakka noodles for us which were so basic that they completely missed the mark with no fusion flavor whatsoever. To make matters worse, they threw in onions even though we strictly requested not to. That pretty much shook up my experience so bad that it was hard to fully recover. Another of his recommendations, the brown garlic chili chicken, was average and not noteworthy. His only decent recommendation was their chicken fried green chili rice. I also made it a point to order chicken lollipops and manchow soup on my own input and those were on point. The best item of them all was the Dynamite Chicken in a spicy orange marinade. And I had to fight to order it since the manager was determined not to include it in our order on the basis that it may be too spicy. I get it, making recommendations is part of his job. But almost forcing customers to change their orders is off limits. The service can therefore use improvement to significantly improve customer experience and ambiance is very casual too, with not much dine in potential. Prices are high, almost comparable to Aling's, which is quite simply a better restaurant hands down. Overall, I can't recommend this based on my experience, unless they demonstrate progress in above identified areas of improvement. read more

Small place with great flavor!! The place is nicely decorated :) We sat down and they came to take our order. When we let the waiter know that it was our first visit they gave us more time to peruse the menu. He answered all our questions and then we ordered: chicken masala, Monk momos (dumplings) & and a kabob...it was all delicious and as I type I'm eating the leftovers! I have ordered food from this restaurant a couple times now and i have to say that except for their green chilly fried rice and chikku shake none of the other dishes were good. Since its a new restaurant and as businesses are struggling we thought of trying a couple of times before we give a negative review. Last week when i ordered food, none of the dishes were worth my money. I am ready to settle for mediocre food once in a while but its been a disaster with my orders here. I ordered their monk's special chicken which was very dry. Sichuan chicken had no flavor. And the worst was chilly pepper chicken. One thing we noticed was that their dishes have excessive use of soy sauce..to the point that it utterly ruins the dish. I had some expectations from the Sichuan fried rice i ordered..but it tasted like its spoilt or may be it was just the way it tastes here. I have given this restaurant 4-5 tries. And the only time it was good was when we just bought their shakes alone. I dont think i will be returning. But their service has been good every time we ordered food, that alone i must add. read more

The food at Monks has unreasonably high amounts of MSG. Instead of enhancing the flavor, I feel it deteriorates the taste. Cold food gets extremely soggy after only a few hours. Overall not very happy with the experience. read more

Update : The other day, I thought that I would give a second try. After my initial review, they reached out right away and try to rectify the problem. I'm glad for it. I ordered (everything vegetarian) Hot and Sour soup; Monk's Special Dumplings, Gravy Gobi Manucharian, Dry Chili Basil Paneer and the Monk's Veg Noodles. Except for the soup, everything tasted very nice. I'm confused what went wrong in soup, maybe too much corn starch, but the thickness didn't translate it to taste. I appreciate the freshness and flavor in the food. I will say between 2 people, we cleaned everything except the Noodles. Again, for me, I like the spicyness but you need to definitely specify and say if you need it mild. I feel like if you have a good appetite, you are definitely going to need more food. I'm glad that they were responsive and allowed me to give a second chance. I definitely will be back. read more

We ordered dinner from Monk today and had a pleasant experience. I called Francis and placed the order. He even helped decide which items would be best for us. Paneer momos were delicious and easily the best I have had so far in Houston. Veg manchurian and burnt garlic fried rice were prepared well too. Spice level in Monks special noodles was a little higher than my liking but it wasn't unpalatable. I would like to post a good review on Yelp as they seem to have been bashed up here undeservedly. Definitely one of the better Indo- Chinese restaurants in Houston. The service is top-notch and while I was waiting to pickup my food, I could see the manager busy with continuous calls and taking orders back to back. Definitely a busy place. In terms of the food itself, the amount of spices they use is just right. Nothing is overpowering which is what I loved about the place. I ordered combination noodles and rice with vegetables and requested for the noodles to be spicy. The heat levels were okay and the food was a tad bit greasy. I also placed an order for malai paneer and bullet naan. The paneer dish was average but the naan was one of the best I've eaten so far! The menu is quite different and will definitely go back to try out some other dishes but I can see the naan becoming a repeat everytime I visit the place. read more

We recently had done take-out from their Heights location and the food was amazing - especially the cumin spiced lamb. It was so tender it literally melted in your mouth and the flavors were amazing. This location - not so much. Ordered the burnt garlic rice with vegetables - light on veggies but the flavor was good. The cumin spiced lamb was not good - the lamb was chewy and we had to throw most of it away. We were extremely disappointed and will not be ordering this dish again. The drums of heaven (chicken lollipop) were good at both locations but the one we ordered from the Heights location was more flavorful. read more

Smelled super fragrant, had all this ingredients in there, looked like it would be flavorful and yet... absolutely no flavor at all. A hint of spice at the end and that's it.
