This shop reminds me of a good old fashion Mom & Pops store that is a hidden gem for any hikers or reader. I realized I had forgotten a map for my hike on the next day, so I called as I was walking through town after the store hours (most stores close at 5:30pm, be warned). The MW stayed open later for me to get there and pick up a great map at a reasonable price. Anytime I am in the White Mountains I stop by the Mountain Wanderer. It is wonderful to see an independent book store that has been operating for years. Steve, the owner, has an encyclopedic knowledge of the hiking trails in the White Mountains and provides great hiking suggestions. To top it off, he is very down to earth and pleasant to talk with. His small store is packed with outdoors related books and other merchandise. Perusing the books and goods in his store is like a treasure hunt. read more

The Mountain Wanderer is a magical place where avid hikers go to spend all of their money on books, maps, stickers, and other hiking "stuff". I mainly wanted to get a sticker for my car representing my completion of hiking all of the NH 4 thousand footers a couple of years back. I ended up with a matching tshirt (it lists all of the 4ks on the back!), a hiking man/sign sticker, and a Mt. Katahdin and a Mt. Washington patch for my backpack. I would have spent more but I decided that it was enough for one day. The owner is super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the area and more specifically, hiking in the White Mountains. Rumor has it that he edits the White Mountain Guide (which, guess what, is available at the MW). You can even get light traction if you are venturing out in the colder months. I highly recommend a stop here whether you are a hiking novice or a seasoned expert. read more

Real gem of a outdoor rec/travel bookstore. Has any map or book you could need or want for the Whites, or anywhere else in the region. I love outdoor-related books (guides, essays, fiction, etc.), and this little store had some relatively obscure finds, which I excitingly browsed through. I practically wanted to buy the entire store. Plus, it doesn't hurt the owner is an outdoor enthusiast who could probably tell you anything you could possibly want to know about the area. I have read the proprietor Steve Smith's books and seen the online storefront before stopping by the physical retail store in Lincoln. I was really surprised with the selection and extent of hiking books, maps, guides and even AMC NH4000 merchandise. Spent a good time looking at books and purchasing the new Katahdin guide. Finally, it was also pleasant talking with Steve about the 2 hikes I did on the weekend and sharing some stories. Between Steve's knowledge and the resources available for purchase here in the store, any hardcore hiker or even intermediate hiker should just forgo any visitor centers and come here straight away. This is the finest travel bookstore in New England and there is just no argument against it! You will find the latest guidebooks, almost always within days of the book being published. This store is run by one of the most famous travel authors in New England, Steve Smith. Steve is a great person and is extremely friendly. He is very well-known in the hiking community and s passionate about all-things-travel related. I've been in this store probably ten times over the last 5 years and I can't recommend this store enough. FYI, he also has a website for ordering and it is fun to follow his "page" on facebook as well.
