Although I wasn't part of the experience, my daughter went to a birthday party here yesterday. She…read moresaid it was fantastic and she would love to have her own party there. There was an instructional portion for the ceramics and then the kids were allowed to make their own items. She made a bowl and a cat. The family was also able to bring pizza and cupcakes in. She had such a great time that we have been checking out other classes that are held here. Very neat spot.

Open Arts is a studio offering classes in drawing, pottery, sewing, voice, piano and guitar. Most…read moreclasses are for children/teens, but they do have a fair set of classes for adults as well. John, the director of Open Arts Studio, is a dynamic guy who is so charismatic...it's easy to envision him sitting at a piano, leading a bunch of people in song around a piano a la Cole Porter. He's the voice teacher and drawing teacher and he's great at both. Home schoolers note: they offer classes during the day for home school students! For me, one caveat is the price. It's not astronomical, but most classes are about $125 for a session, about 5 classes, and it adds up. I believe it's because of this that some classes aren't very full. On the up side, if you take more than one class, or have multiple children enrolled, you get a 10% discount. They hope to add cooking classes somewhere down the line. We are looking forward to the addition as I know my daughter would learn a lot because they are both organized and inspiring at Open Arts!

I signed up to be an artist ( photographer) here and paid a couple months. Then I over hear (…read morewasn't informed) that they will be having an "artist in residency" a fancy way of saying someone will be living, perhaps illegally, in the studio. How is this professional? And not to even inform me. And to make matters worse, there is only one area where I can shoot where I can control the light which is where this person will be sleeping and living. There's a larger area I could have done my shooting if I wanted to move tables and chairs and easels but it has windows that allow light in and all though they said they would put some covers up, that never happened. Lastly, I referred figure model artists to the owner at her request..she acknowledged she got the email from my model friend but the owner never had the courtesy to reply. The owner said " they were having trouble connecting" this embarrassed me because it made me look flaky. How hard is it to send an email saying " thank you but not at this time"? I had to ask for a receipt for my rent. Got one, not the other. I never signed a thing, no accountability for either party. I had to ask that they build a Google calendar for artists to use. This just isn't a serious business. It's a hobby. This is a cool place that draws some great people/ artists....but alas the professionalism is non existent.

I recently modeled for a figure drawing session here and found it to be a fantastic experience. The…read morewarm and friendly atmosphere made my return to modeling after a long absence, comfortable and encouraging. I was also keenly aware of the support and encouragement the artists gave to each other. Whatever your skill level, this is a great place to draw and if you like, get some feedback on your work and observe others' work as well. It was a pleasure working with Chandler. She made me feel comfortable from the start and I very much appreciate her inviting me to pose for her group. Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to do so again.
