It was raining and being able to sit outdoors, stay dry, have heaters and watch the rain come down through 200 year old oak trees was amazing. Baked Brie appetizer a must have and 10+. Wedge salad really good and the smoked bacon on it was so good. NY steak with peppercorn sauce a 10+. Roasted carrots and Brussel sprouts 10+. Warm rolls and salted butter to start so good. The service and ambience deserve more than five stars. Jeremy and his assistant Manny were great - attentive, personable and knowledgeable. The setting was magical. The brie cheesecake dessert was one of the best desserts I've ever had. The pastry chef should be commended. The rest of the food was OK. I loved my filet mignon but found the spinach and mac & cheese side dishes to be mediocre at best. The blue cheese wedge was nothing special. The dish I absolutely disliked was the cabbage entrée. We have been here twice for breakfast and can say - you are getting what you are paying for however be ready to pay for it. Our service was great and they do call you by your name provided - i.e. Mr and Mrs Last Name. We are not married but I did not see it offensive. They are impeccable with clearing plates and checking on you enough to where you wait for nothing but don't feel rushed. I got the Malt and Vanilla Waffle with berries, homemade almond butter and homemade Vanilla Whipped Cream. My boyfriend got the feta and tomatillo eggs (2 poached) with toast. He got a cortado and I got a caramel latte - one of the best I've had. I appreciate that the menu is not typical bacon and eggs rather fresh and depth of flavor combos. No, the portions aren't huge but why do they need to be? I would rather enjoy my entire meal and latte without feel like a golf ball on the green. Yes, you are paying for the view and ambiance however it would be completely expected given the hotel you're visiting. While a very specific note, one that I noticed, the mugs for lattes have a volcanic, unglazed finish on the outside that is difficult to get past. The same, slightly unfinished feeling is on some of the plates. This levels an odd feel on the lips where drinking and even on your hands when holding the cup and scraping on the plates. Some people may not mind this, but I found the fact to be immediately noticeable. While being here twice, I would recommend however I would note the cost if visiting as to not shock the masses. If this is not a concern, the air of ambiance around a rather upscale crowd is lovely to casually dine among. read more

Is it possible to have a 5 Star experience at one restaurant in a resort, and a 2 Star at another one?: Unfortunately, Yes! Its Two Star 2uesday again!!!!' The Oak is the all day restaurant at Ojai Valley Inn. We had breakfast before we played golf and I had the lox & bagel. The dish itself was okay, albeit on the smaller side for the price. However, the reason for the rating is the entire team fail in service. On 5/11 around 9 am I asked four staff members, including the mgr for more hot water for my tea. The answer was always, no problem sir. Apparently it was a problem bc the hot water never came. Secondarily, I asked for a cup of coffee to go. The first time I asked, it never came. I had a ask again. Lastly, the same thing happened when we asked for the check. If you are going to charge resort prices, you better give resort service! The foregoing, coupled with the lack of capacity seating, and tables that were not 6 feet apart, means I will not return when I come to play golf again. I'd rather hit McD's in town before you come to the resort. At least I know I'll get what the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffet gets when he goes: A cheap breakfast w/ fast service. read more

The food here is normal and okay, except that the amount was really low. For example, we ordered a PB & J for 11 dollars with only two tiny triangle pieces. Another thing was the time. We waited one and a half hours for our food and that is not a good thing. The service was alright, but this was a very disappointing experience. We watched other people com and leave. When we came, the sun was shining nicely, but when we left, it was already nighttime. Overall, our experience was horrid. The restaurant has many places they need to improve on. I hate writing this because i am usually a huge fan of this place .. but this last time i went did quite disappoint me. I went on new year's day and everything was great until they brought out the wrong dishes for our meal... they got one item right and the other 3 wrong.. i get people make mistakes but they did nothing to resolve it. the one item that was right obviously didn't get eaten until the rest came back out. it already took a while for the food to come out initially but it took an extra 21 minutes for the correct food to come out. our waiter then avoided us the rest of our visit... they didn't offer to reheat the one dish that was correct... or didn't offer anything. idk it left a bad taste in my mouth. for the price you pay, i don't think it's right for the experience being extremely long (considering the plans we had for the day) and the service to be unpleasant really didn't leave me wanting to go back unfortunately. read more

Last week, my husband and I spent our honeymoon in Ojai. We made reservations at The Oak for dinner Friday night, with request of indoor seating. We arrived at our reservation on time and the host brought us to a table outside. We notified our waiter we requested indoor seating and he said he would go to see what happened. The host came back to us and approached us with " I was told you would like to sit inside" we answered with "yes, we requested indoor seating when we made the reservation". He said okay I will go look to make sure that's still available. He came back 5 minutes later with " Are you sure you'd like to sit inside, it's LONELY". He proceeded to tell us that there wasn't anyone inside when we clearly saw people inside and there were tables available. We responded with yes, we would like to sit inside, we would rather not be cold. He continued to try to convince us to stay outside to eat two more times. He finally said okay and started to walk us inside. As we were walking past a table he asked " would you like to try this table instead, there are more heaters". Came here for dinner with a local friend because their patio is dog friendly and they could seat us "later" (than like 6pm. Ojai does not do late dining). Interestingly, they inquired about food allergies when we made our reservation. When we showed up it didn't appear as if a reservation had been necessary at all. They originally sat us in the lower covered area which was lovely. It felt like we were on vacation. They then had to move us to the upper level because they realized we had a dog (odd since we had announced this when we made our reservation, and he was not by any means hidden when we arrived to check in...). This area was much more open to the elements. It was a cold evening, and for some reason we had to ask three times for someone to turn on one of the several heat lamps in our vicinity. They finally did so at the end of our meal. So service was... strange. The food was alright. The vegan enchiladas (sweet potato, corn, black beans, spinach, vegan mole, lime cashew crema) were misleadingly underwhelming for their $28 price tag. The avocado hummus had good texture but lacked flavor. The complementary dinner rolls were outstanding. Others enjoyed their scallops and pork chop. The wine list is extensive, and our waitress helped us select a Pinot Noir to go with our dinner. All in all, our evening was definitely made by the company we brought with us at our own table and was not enhanced by the staff or the location. Quality is mostly good as is service. 3.5 stars overall and rounding up to 4. DINNER * The roasted chicken was mostly juicy, with a few dry parts around the white meat. Short ribs were tender, juicy, though a tad bit on the salty side. * The beet salad was excellent, with three different colors and a nice pairing with candied pecans. * Mascarpone Cheesecake is definitely worth making room for - a much lighter, balanced dessert. The thorn in my side and reason for knocking off stars is because each time I've gone, it is never busy and yet their hostess seats hotel guests with the better view and puts those who aren't hotel guests in the next row (or above steps-walkway as you come in from top) with obstructions of view. He got the pork chop- the flavor in the crust of the pork chop was perfect. Amazing flavor. His cauliflower mashed potato's legit tasted like mac and cheese. It was AMAZING. I had the steak! It was cooked perfectly. I absolutely loved the mash it came with, I can't remember specifically what it was but it was Delicious. The only con is: trying to find it! Dined here for the ambience and views during my stay at the Ojai Valley Inn. I got coffee, ordered an Eggs Benedict and my fiancé got the Breakfast Burrito. The Benedict was good but the Hollandaise sauce wasn't particularly amazing - it lacked some flavor - and I thought the ham was also a tad dry. My coffee was surprisingly really good though! I am just going to state this right here: The Bluegrass brunch gives the Four Seasons brunch a run for it's money. The food is outstanding! Whoever designed the menu chose only to offer the best items. There were no "filler" or "fluff" options. Every menu item seemed intentional. And everything we tried was good. E-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g! The portions are the perfect size. Nothing is overwhelming. Come here if you want to enjoy really good food, great live music and terrific service. Next, the dinner. Again, reaaaaally good. We stopped in after our long bike ride from Ventura and the lady at the front gate was able to accommodate reservations for us at that very moment. We were there on a Wednesday afternoon end it it was nice and quiet. The food was amazing it was many options for a healthy eaters like myself and asked what the waiter's favorite dish was and we ordered it and it was great suggestion. we ordered the for bidden rice with salmon and it was amazing. We also ordered the mushroom pizza and that hit the spot. Perfect amount of food and will definitely come back again. The dress code was casual and we ate outside. We came here for my Birthday Dinner. We made reservations in May. When you arrive you have to valet park. We were told to go through a door and The Oak would be right there. NOTHING!!! was there! A girl in a cart came by and took us to The Oak. NEVER would have found on our own. We arrive and there is SO MANY KIDS running around everywhere. We asked for a quiet table and we were seated in a corner. A server came by to ask about drinks . " I asked for a Beefeaters and tonic. He wasn't sure if they had Beefeaters. He would check. Okay. Another server VICTOR came up and said "he is new, I'll get your drinks". We got our drinks and told VICTOR we would enjoy the drinks for a bit. An Hour later, we had to find VICTOR. WE were hungry. We had ordered a bottle of wine with our drinks. NEVER brought glasses or the wine. After our salads, still NO WINE. About 20 minutes later we saw VICTOR and told him not to bring the wine. He left a wine by the glass menu but NEVER CAME BACK!! Someone else brought the dinner. I asked that server for a glass of wine. VICTOR much later brought the desert menu. We told him nothing for us. Wanted to get out of there. 10 minutes later VICTOR brings a small desert with a candle. He knew it was my Birthday, He mentioned it when we sat down. DAMAGE ALREADY DONE!! The kicker was my Husband gave VICTOR a $100 bill. for change. He gave it to the male manager for change. VICTOR left the change that was in a separate BILL BOOK. When my Husband opened it we were shorted $10. Called the manager over( VICTOR not around). She counted the money( 3 $20's 2 $5's 1 $10 and 10 singles). Total 90. She talked to the original manager who made change. You could tell he was mad to be called out. She came over and said" She had to take $10 from upstairs. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?? OMG, breakfast was amazing. And the views were gorgeous! This restaurant is at the Ojai Valley Inn. I split 4 breakfasts with 3 friends, and was excited to try 4 items off the menu. We had: 1. California scramble with walnut pesto, which though little under salted, was just delicious with a little additional salt. 2. Avocado toast with two eggs - solid, basic avo toast 3. Brioche french toast - delicious! The orange flavored almond slivers were a lovely addition 4. Buttermilk pancakes topped with strawberries. The light, creamy salted butter that came on the side with this was just divine and made the pancakes! All the food was fantastic, but I have to say the coffee drinks (latte & cappuccino) were just terrible. Even the tea drinkers said they didn't enjoy their tea! One star off since coffee drinks are a significant part of breakfast. Surprisingly low quality for the restaurant/resort caliber. The view from the patio of a 200 year old oak tree and the golf course beyond were beautiful. The restaurant is of course a bit pricey, but expected at this type of resort. You can't beat the view of the hills behind the sloping golf course on a cool spring evening. The pink moment of sunset was blocked by a low layer of marine layer creeping into the mountains from Ventura. There was one gluten free choice for me - a perfectly cooked steak! Served under a gas heater positioned to keep our table comfortable. The servers had some confusion around our table but the deftly worked out the kinks and we enjoyed our visit with no problems. Al fresco dining under the pergola offers dramatic views overlooking 200-year-old Oak trees, the championship golf Ojai course and sweeping mountain vistas. Reservation is highly recommended, especially when dining on a weekend. Alynn from the reservation line was super accommodating when we ran across some traffic in LA and had to move our brunch reservation to a later time. Once we got there, valet service was exceptional and upon check-in, you're able to either take a golf cart or walk to the restaurant. We decided to do the 10-minute walk to soak in the crisp air and gorgeous scenery. Our walk was accompanied by Joshua D, who shared informative details about the resort. He was charming and helpful. We came for a quick bite while staying at the resort and the service was great. The 3 stars are for the food itself...wish I could give it a 3.5...and here's why. The soup left something to be desired, because it was more of a bisque and overall just felt like I was drinking enchilada sauce. The salmon bowl was good, but not great.
