You can't beat the view of the hills behind the sloping golf course on a cool spring evening. The pink moment of sunset was blocked by a low layer of marine layer creeping into the mountains from Ventura. There was one gluten free choice for me - a perfectly cooked steak! Served under a gas heater positioned to keep our table comfortable. The servers had some confusion around our table but the deftly worked out the kinks and we enjoyed our visit with no problems. Brunch in Ojai, A stay at Ojai Valley Inn is a must when visiting Ojai, California. But even with a day trip, The Oak restaurant is the ideal brunch spot when exploring this quaint, little town. The Oak offers a daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner experience featuring locally sourced products, many of which come from our resort gardens. Al fresco dining under the pergola offers dramatic views overlooking 200-year-old Oak trees, the championship golf Ojai course and sweeping mountain vistas. Reservation is highly recommended, especially when dining on a weekend. Alynn from the reservation line was super accommodating when we ran across some traffic in LA and had to move our brunch reservation to a later time. Once we got there, valet service was exceptional and upon check-in, you're able to either take a golf cart or walk to the restaurant. We decided to do the 10-minute walk to soak in the crisp air and gorgeous scenery. Our walk was accompanied by Joshua D, who shared informative details about the resort. He was charming and helpful. YUMMO of course it's spendy but what do you expect? As with the rest of the resort, they take good care. I was dining alone and did feel a bit frustrated for a while when they started to get busy and they could've sold me another glass of wine if my server was better. Having said this, the food was wonderful and their portions are quite ample for a restaurant of this style. I had the burrata appetizer - with a dried cherry apricot chutney and endive in balsamic, served with some fabulous grilled bread and it was to die for. Honestly, between this, and whatever the rolls they bring right away I would've been satisfied, and left with a quite reasonable bill. But I was already committed to the pork chop so I only ate part of the appetizer and took it back to the room. (Yum later) The pork chop was so good it brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful setting. First time I went here I had the chicken shawarma, which was wonderful. We this weekend, and it was ok. Got the California steak salad, very dry and the medium rare cook was way overcooked. I likely went when the chefs were not there. Seemed like typical cooks were running the kitchen. We came for a quick bite while staying at the resort and the service was great. The 3 stars are for the food itself...wish I could give it a 3.5...and here's why. The soup left something to be desired, because it was more of a bisque and overall just felt like I was drinking enchilada sauce. The salmon bowl was good, but not great. Great restaurant location at the Ojai valley inn. Mainly an outdoor restaurant with a huge covered patio outdoor heaters and overlooking the beautiful golf course. Stop by for lunch the other day they offered me bread which I gladly accepted. And they brought out these beautiful buttery salt topped Parker House rolls with a creamy butter which were so delicious. Next I went for the crispy chicken sandwich which had a soft bun and coleslaw on it with delicious seasoned french fries. I also ordered a side salad of mixed greens with their blue cheese dressing. The dressing room was a little watery but it was tasty. This is a great choice for a more casual fair when you're at the Ojai valley inn I'll be back. read more

LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! Went last night for the first time with my parents and had a beautiful experience. The weather was perfect, but when it got chilly, they were more than happy to provide a heater and blanket. The mussels were my personal favorite they're definitely a must have at The Oak! I've been coming to OVI for over 10 years and the food has always been bad. Nothing tastes fresh even when it comes direct from the kitchen. Now that I have kids I cannot tell you how annoying it is that chefs think that the only food kids will eat are chicken fingers, grilled cheese sandwiches or pb&j. The hummus appetizer was yummy but the short rib dinner was mediocre. I was really excited to try The Oak for brunch. My fiancee took me here this morning for my birthday and she put so much thought into it. She called ahead a week ago, and the staff member she spoke was very lovely. She said he asked if we were celebrating anything special, asked if we had any dietary restrictions (we are both vegetarians, which she told him) and he said great! There are tons of vegetarian options on the menu. My fiancee was so excited to surprise me and really put a lot of effort into planning a special day. When we got there though, the hostess told us it was the Sunday brunch buffet only and asked us if we were aware...we were a bit taken aback since my fiancee had talked to the restaurant just a few days ago and they never mentioned anything about a buffet. Also, a buffet during COVID??? Not ideal. We went ahead and rolled with the punches and decided to just do the buffet since we already drove all the way out there. We aren't big buffet people normally and the buffet definitely didn't win us over. We thought the buffet would at least be served by staff to control everyone touching the serve ware but nope, you walk into a small, congested room, no crowd control, no requiring hand sanitizer and everyone is just swarming the food. Everyone was touching the tongs, breathing over the food (masks were required at least but noses were out) and standing shoulder to shoulder while waiting to get what was at best, lukewarm brunch food that looked like it was cooked for the masses. I ended up getting an omelette made because at least the guy behind the omelette station made it for me and I didn't have to touch anything. I never eat omelettes but it felt like the only thing I felt safe with. It was mediocre at best. Not what I would have ever ordered normally. Everything at the Ojai Valley Inn made us feel like we were at the 5 star resort it is, except brunch at The Oak. There was nothing special about it, the staff didn't go above and beyond (except when my fiancee called to make the reservation) and the buffet and execution of it was really disappointing and unsanitary. Not the best way to start my birthday but at least my fiancee and I laughed it all off and enjoyed each others company (and the boozy lavender lemonades). We will definitely be back to the Ojai Valley Inn but never to the Sunday brunch. read more

The oak is a beautiful place with live music from under a tree with lanterns. What more could you want. Great food, ambiance and company. We got dropped off by shuttle. Staff is amazing and attentive. Burrata - amazing a delicious. Wouldn't think that peaches would go, but it was delicious. Zucchini and corn cakes- out of this world. The sauce was delicious. Bread- delicious. Pretzel like I ordered the short rib. Normally I don't like mole sauce. But I asked to try before and David was so kind. And brought me a sample. Delicious. Had a corn almost succotash under. Loved every bite Friends has the filet- medium. Was cooked perfectly. Delicious every bite We all finished every bite Desserts.... The Oak is a breakfast and brunch place inside the resort, it is a little pricey but the food and the service superb! As it turns out, it's all about the setting here at the Ojai Resort & Spa. Essentially, outside next to huge oak trees, overlooking the golf course. While it's not at the beach, or on the cliffs along the Amalfi Coast, this is pretty serene and relaxing. I thought this would be an amazing chance to use an old $200 gift card I received back in 2004! The idea to enjoy an AYCE brunch buffet has been on my mind for years, so I finally had the chance. In short -- the quality is good, but the selection was minimal. Choices were an omelet & waffle bar, a small amount of berries/fruit, yogurt, a cheese plate, a small amount of bagels/toast, muffins, and breads, and OJ. Perhaps the best offering, flavored butters: strawberry, maple, and honey. Each of these are worth eating by the spoonful. Unfortunately, at $29.99 per person, it's good -- but not running-back-anytime-soon good. What gains an extra star is the service. My server was Alyssa, and she couldn't be more sweet. But this compliment extends to the entire staff that interacted with me in some manner. All were kind, lovely, smiling, and helpful. Overall I would describe the Oak as disappointing. I thought it would be the high point of our Ojai trip.One of us had the veg lasagna, which she thought was excellent, our birthday girl had the lamb loin which she described as chewy. I had the fish of the day, mahi mahi, which was served simply grilled, which is the way I like my fish, but it really had almost no flavor. The fish came with a endive tomato salad. I'm not crazy about endive so they did subtitute romaine for the lettuce. The tomato portion was 3 cherry tomato halves and the salad took up most of the plate. When I made the reservation, the very lovely lady said "oh yes, we make a big deal out of birthdays". When we were seated, the bus boy asked which of us was Nancy and wished her a happy birthday and NOTHING further was said or done. ALL the sides of vegetables and potatoes are separate and at the rather hefty price of $12 each. I love fine dining, and I don't mind paying for it, but this one was definitely not worth the price. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and my boyfriend got the Two Eggs Any Style. The food was extremely salty! If the chef wasn't so heavy handed with the salt, I would've given this place 5 stars. The omelette was very filling so sharing was great. We dined here last night and had a great experience! We got the warm crab dip, the crispy chicken small plate, side of mac n cheese, and mushroom ravioli. The complimentary bread rolls were also amazing. Only thing i would maybe skip and order something else was the mac n cheese as it was a little basic BUT it was a big size and very filling so if you need to bulk up your order, it will definitely do the job. Also, we were celebrating my husbands birthday and he gave up sweets for a New Year's resolution but will do fruit and they were so kind and brought him a big bowl of fresh blackberries/raspberries/strawberries with some homemade whip. I recently helped host a baby shower here and would absolutely recommend, not only the restaurant, but booking this location for your next event. The event coordinator I worked with, Sophia, was extremely good at communicating and getting back to us in a timely manner. She answered all of our questions and helped us pick the perfect package for our event. Upon arrival, the hostesses were friendly and helpful. When I got there, I noticed that the gift table I had asked for wasn't there. The hostesses, Rachel, was on top of it and had someone bring out a table right away. Our guests trickled in, and the team at The Oak made sure to ask if we wanted wine poured as they arrived / fresh bread on the table, etc. Our server graciously greeted our guests with rose and it added a nice touch to the top of the event. Once we all got seated, the waiter came around and took our order from the preselected menu we had worked out. Everything ran so smoothly, the appetizers were perfectly spaced out from the entrees, and might I add all tasted incredible. It was a wonderful luncheon and event. A couple notes I will add, it did seem like there was a little disconnect from the restaurant and the event planner, we had asked for a gift table and one kids menu, yet on the day of the event we had to ask for both at the restaurant and it didn't seem like they got the memo. I also wish they had asked everyone if they wanted a coffee/after lunch drink, some folks had ordered coffees and once they came it prompted more guests to ask for a cappuccino, etc. I would still count this event as a major success and would like to thank the staff at The Inn and The Oak. My friends and I were staying at the hotel and decided to have dinner here after a day at the spa. They both got the short rib and I had the chicken. Pros: overall service is good. The hostess took notes on why we were at the hotel (babymoon and engagement) and our server took care to mention those events when she came by. The food, including the complimentary bread, was also very good, and the restaurant comped our desserts of donut holes and lava cake, both of which were good. Live music was playing just outside, and it was loud enough without being disruptive, which was nice. The heat lamps were also a bit strong, but the servers also turned these down promptly at our request. Con: I ordered a glass of wine with my dinner, and was asked to show ID. Since I was staying at the hotel and hadn't been asked to show my ID when I ordered a glass of wine at the spa pool, I obviously wasn't prepared. Because of this requirement that hadn't been expressed to any of us, I was unable to have a glass of wine. It's just annoying and shows poor management at a resort hotel that's supposed to provide a first class relaxing experience. read more

A Magical Evening We've dined at the Oak outdoor patio many times for special events, as our mother was a long time resident of Ojai. After her passing at age 92, we decided to honor her favorite place with a meal for the immediate family. The kindness shown by Ruthie, the evening manager, and the professional service by Jennifer was exceptional. The setting at dusk at the Oak is always stunning, but the food quality and the service matched the setting. We stayed at the Inn for a couple nights and were overall disappointed with the food here. It's such a well-run establishment, so it's puzzling that the quality control on the food was sub par. At The Oak itself, my daughter had the filet which itself was amazing. The accompanying grilled rapini was inedible. Bitter and smokey, but mainly bitter. Order the filet without the rapini, and sub in a different side from the menu. Yes, insult the chef here. Otherwise he/she will be insulting your taste buds. For breakfast, the avocado toast looked delicious, but had overpowering lemon juice in the avocado. The smoked salmon bagel was wonderful. Perfectly ripe tomato slices were among the yummy things to put on this lovely breakfast bagel. read more

The Oak Cafe is the casual dining restaurant at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa located in Ojai CA. Depending on what time of the year you come to this restaurant- you may say the place rocks!- or that it is just okay, as was the case tonight. I love the Oak Cafe in the Summer as you sit outside- overlooking the 200+ year old Oak Trees on the property and, to me, everything tastes better when you dine al fresco. The moon is high above you and the aromatic fragrances that abound on this property, softly waft over your dinner. Linger over your wine and enjoy what California is all about. Or stop by for breakfast- their Eggs Benedict are amazing (or maybe it is just being able to enjoy them out of doors!) My rating in the Summer would go up one full star at least! But tonight- on a cool Spring night- I had to eat indoors and it felt too much like the restaurant in a hotel. Sure there is a fireplace going and you can see through the windows the 200+ year old oak trees. But what I missed was a sense as to why I was there and what made this place special to me on past visits. Couple that with a server who was just okay- and I did not have a stellar experience. Our server was MIA through most of the evening- I even had to flag down someone servicing another table to get our water refilled and as for the wine- we were pouring our own all night. The one thing that I will call out was the salad that I had tonight as the pre-cursor for my dinner. It was amazing and when I describe it you will think- hmm . . .do those things go together? But they do, and in a big way. The salad is baby mixed greens with pears, onions, goat cheese, Greek olives, pistachio nuts all tossed together with an apple vinaigrette. Sound weird? I thought so too. But it was delicious. I could have eaten that as my entree. The rest of the dinner was predictable. My NY strip was perfectly prepared and my friend's lamb chops were equally as good. But because we were sitting in doors- it lost something that made it so special on my last visit. My only other advice is not to order the crabcake appetizer. Dry and flavorless. Also came with an orange sauce ( a no no for me) so I ended up not eating much of it. Come to Ojai and experience the wonder of a world class resort. The grounds and overall experience is second to none. On the other hand, the Oaks still needs a little work (at least when you are not outside and the views are not distracting you from the food) But hey- it is the everyday restaurant of the hotel. But unfortunately for me? I know they can do better. And they usually do. read more

Honestly, as a recent LA to Ojai transplant, I'm really disappointed in the treatment that the Ojai Valley Inn gives to "locals". We may not be the Money you're looking for on room booking, but we damn well live here, and to refuse our patronage, our support, and our green dollars by only allowing hotel guests to eat at the restaurants is a ridiculous and foolish business decision. Are there folk in town who want to visit one of your restaurants? Absolutely. Will keeping them away help your bsuiness long term? Absolutely not. Get your head our of your arse and realise that we will stop supporting you - period - if you continue this snobbery. read more

The best part of the Oak Grill is dining on the patio. The lights make it feel so festive, and the lively crowds make you feel you are at a party. Service is okay. Menu expensive, and so much comes a la carte, but what we ordered tasted good. Not great, but good. It was our first night, and after a day in the hot sun, of traveling, we thought why not eat at the "resort." There was music on the lawn, too, to add to that lovely feeling and help us wait patiently for our table. Even with a reservation, expect to wait during the high season. Don not expect a "terrace view." The hostess sat us on the outskirts, restaurant "Siberia," no view, outside the perimeter of the patio. We had to send back the first drinks, too watered down. The waitress agreed. They offered us indoors which was even worse, dead and empty. If it hadn't been so late, we would have left. read more

We visited the resort during the middle of the week. Had breakfast twice at the Oaks and had dinner once. All experiences were amazing. The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. And of course the venue is unmatched. I particularly loved the salad and the gazpacho soup. The filet mignon was generously sized and so delicious! My wife loved the salmon.
