I've been going to The Old Brogue regularly for about 30 years and always loved it. I've been away for the last couple of years but I went for lunch with a large group of friends this week. It was my first time there since the change in ownership, so I was a bit worried that it would be as good as it was before. They NAILED it! Great service and everyone around me loved their food. My "watermelon and feta salad" was mainly spinach with a few small scoops of watermelon and a couple of minuscule pieces of feta. I found some pieces of pecan shell in the salad. We've eaten in and ordered take out numerous times over the past 3 years. Sometimes the experience is good, sometimes not. For service...quality is definitely dependent on who you get. Some waitstaff are wonderfully attentive, friendly, and just an all around great job. Some leave you feeling like they are doing you a favor by even showing up. For the food...some menu items are solid, some ok, and some can be skipped. There are occasionally new items, a few are surprisingly inventive for an Irish pub. And of course there are standards...though, sometimes with a nice upscale twist. There are some real disappointments though. Environment...an all around win. Inside is small, quaint, and dark. Feels like you'd expect when you hear it's an Irish pub. The front patio is great, albeit could use some shade. The back patio, which was recently expanded, is a nice alternative to the full sun front patio and the often packed indoor seating. All in all, a perfectly decent place to grab a meal or hang out for a bit with a beer. It gets very crowded, though that won't keep us from continuing to go back. The Irish Pubs/Restaurants in Northern Virginia seems to be dwindling in number. A weekday evening back at the Old Brogue was a pleasure. Did call for reservation and the person who answered said they only took reservations for parties of six or more and that having dinner at 6:00PM should not be a problem; we got the last table inside at 6:00PM. The porch still had tables, but, it also had a draft and in the flu season could see no reason to sit on the porch. Meal was Guinness, shot of Jameson's, with corn beef and cabbage; then Irish Whiskey cake for dessert. Great meal for two at about $100. We will be back again. read more

So I've been going to The Old Brogue for decades. It's obvious that the original management that made it famous is long gone. It seems as if the management has changed again after the last new group must have sold the place again but I really don't know. The decor hasn't changed nor the staples of the menu although some things have been added. I had the Club that had avocado on it. Eating one half I didn't like the texture so I decided to remove the avocado from the second half. Much to my horror the avocado was horribly brown which means I ate the other one on the first half. I immediately stopped eating the sandwich and eventually the waitress asked how were things? This is where it got interesting. When I pointed this out to her, you know, brown avocado thing, her response was basically, yeah and? She wanted to know if I wanted another one and I really didn't want anyone else making me anything who thought putting rotten avocado on my sandwich was okay making me another one. Instantly she was now insulted that I had the audacity to complain and clearly I was stupid. It was interesting that she began to speak to my wife and I in a patronizing way particularly when my wife asked to have it removed. While it was insulting to be spoken to that way it was interesting to watch a waitress behave this like that. She acted like some sort of a gatekeeper for a kitchen that was making mistakes. Serving patrons rotten produce is indefensible and should be followed with an immediate apology and not condescending comments. Nothing saddens me more than this review. Have been coming to the brogue for over 25 years. This is my first visit where I didn't crush the potato skins or finish my French onion soup. Both my wife and I looked at each other and said it's blatantly bad. It wasn't until I paid a larger than expected bill that I realized this was the first time in the establishment since it's new ownership. Sadly, it will likely be our last - end of an era. Sad to see the Old Brogue, (a favorite watering hole of our for years and years) go downhill so fast since new owners and management took over. Like many have already commented, almost all of our favorite dishes (good honest pub food with a home made/comfort food feel) have disappeared from the menu! No Irish beef pie in an 'Irish Pub', no chicken curry and any original dishes that have remained have been dramatically downsized and do not taste the same, not to mention the dramatic increase in prices! What an earth has happened to the fish and chips - how can you mess that up? There is literally nothing on the menu that appeals anymore and the distinct lack of patrons every time we come is starting to tell. It's clear people are choosing to go elsewhere and sadly we are about to do the same...so sad! read more

We'd just finished viewing Great Falls and walking around the park a bit (lots of rain and mud, so we didn't go far) and decided to eat in town. Based on the reviews, I decided on the Old Brogue, and I'm glad we did! We ordered: Turkey sandwich (this is my dad's go-to always and forever, amen) Clam chowder Potato skins Crispy Potato Bacon Cheese Balls (as an entree) Irish Banger Rolls (as an entree) Connemara Chicken Fish & Chips The Rustic Pumpkin & Sweet Potato Tart Because my dad only wanted turkey, lettuce, and mayo, it's tough to review whether or not the Cali Turkey Club is actually good since the things that make it a Cali Turkey Club were gone. The clam chowder had a lot of clams in it and was quite good. The potato skins were on the very bland side, despite being covered in cheese and bacon, and I wish they'd added salt and pepper to the potatoes beforehand. My husband said the potato bacon cheese balls and banger rolls were good, and the Connemara Chicken was exceptionally delicious - very moist and tender, very flavorful. My fish and chips were fine - cod is inherently always only going to be fine - and the fries were pretty average. I'd say the best part of the meal (for which I was too full to enjoy) was the pumpkin/sweet potato Tart - excellent crust, fantastic flavor and texture of the filling, and good ice cream. The service is prompt and the quality of food is good, plus you get incredibly generous portions. This is a great spot to hit on your way in or out of town! read more

After a 3-hour long hike at nearby Great Falls, we decided to stop by this Irish Pub. It was around 12:30pm and the place already have a large amount of people dining in. As we parked and approached the building, we can see tables on the outside are already filled with diners. We checked in and asked for a table for 4. We were told all outside seating were all taken but we were lucky there was a table for four inside so we took it. We sat down and the waiter handed us the menu and told us he will check back in after he bring us 4 glasses of water. We were still in our hiking outfits and at this time were famished so a cold glass of water was definitely a relief. After using the restroom and washing my hands, I reviewed the menu which looked promising and extensive. For some reason, I craved for salad so I decided on a the blackened salmon salad with dried cherries, mandarin oranges, arugulas and different spring mix greens with vinaigrette. I also saw fish and chips and was excited to try them so I sort of suggested to my hubby to order the fish and chips, and he did. Our friends ordered the same salmon salad and a Rueben sandwich. When our plates were delivered they all looked appetizing and because I was famished, I dived right in and forgot to take pictures, ugh but not really for the food was delicious! And I can assure you, they were all good and appetizing and the prices were reasonable. we can even see the plates (mostly brunch - egg dishes) in the tables in front and behind ours and we can tell the diners were enjoying their meals. It was Sunday brunch after all! This place definitely has a lot to offer and we were told there is a band playing usually on the weekends so we will probably try to come one of those days. Hidden amongst rows of businesses in a townhome-styled commercial area is this gem in Great Falls. It's an Irish restaurant that I'd almost forgotten about until a few friends invited me out. It boasts a comfortable covered porch and open-air dining area on a brick patio surrounded by well-maintained shrubs framed by walkways. Just across pathway is a creamery if you want to indulge afterwards, we did. While I was there for a gathering with middle-aged friends we were surrounded by families with children and intergenerational tables. It's a friendly place for all. English ales on tap such as Old Speckled Hen are wonderful, and the appetizer list is fit for dinner service. Mind you, not all the food is of Irish origins so there's plenty to please. Highly recommend the shotgun shrimp and tater skins - dry not greasy - which is pleasing. Didn't much care for the infused sour cream but there's always something else such as curry sauce to take its place. If you order fries don't forget to ask for the curry sauce as a dip, it's sublime. Can't speak to in house seating but do recommend the outdoors. A few flies but no mosquitoes, perfect for a summer experience with friends or family. read more

It's been a while since I've eaten here - but last Sunday evening I went over to watch a performance in the Snuggery and eat some dinner. Had the Shepherd's Pie or Cottage Pie, and ordered a dram of Lagavulin 16 year old Single Malt Scotch and an Old Brogue Pale Ale, plus a glass of water. Since we were ensconced in the Snuggery in tight quarters (reservations only), the servers did a good job of moving around and getting our food and drinks to us without a lot of disturbance while we were listing to the musical performance. The Shepherd's Pie is always one of my favorites in an Irish Pub - and this was very good. Solid, hearty, robust pub Man food. A mixture of sauteed Zucchini and Yellow Squash was served on the side. The squash was light and buttery and quite yummy. The single malt is one of my favorites - although I think overpriced at $15 for a dram. The food was excellent, our party of 4 each had selected something different and we each were delighted with our selections to include French onion soup. Chili, quiche and fish chips! A nice casual place to grab a nice hot bite to eat and a nice drink. The food is nothing over the top special, but it's decent pub food. I wasn't very impressed about the sausage rolls; felt that it was a bit over priced. The calamari was crispy and the asian-influenced sauce was tasty, but seemed out of place for an Irish pub. The fish and chips portion was a nice size and the fish was golden crispy o the outside with a nice flaky interior. The chips/fries portion that seemed overly generic. The pie was more flavorful and more fun to eat, with it's steaming, gravy-laden filling and crisp pie top. read more

I love getting my nacho fix here. The toppings aren't extraordinary but the ratio is good-- perfectly cheesy with beans, tomatoes, and onions! We tried the onion rings too with our drinks and we were not regretting that decision at all. read more

The food here is really below average. I'm sure all 3+ star reviews on here are from old white people with no taste buds. I ordered the Swedish Eggs--eggs Benny with salmon instead of Canadian bacon. The hollandaise sauce was very weak and had more of a liquidy consistency than a thick sauce. The potatoes that came with the dish weren't special at all; they were cubed and fried but somehow weren't crispy. My mom ordered fish & chips and while the fish was fried well, my dad said he smelled something funny about it and we determined the fish was not fresh. Probably frozen all week. My dad ordered shepherd's pie and I felt really bad for him because he was excited about having authentic shepherd's pie, but this was probably the worst dish of all. The potato crust on top was not crispy at all; in fact, it was very doughy and seemed undercooked. The beef or whatever was inside was bland and underseasoned and I barely saw any vegetables that were supposed to be in there. Also, patio seating: it's a nice concept except for the fact that three of the tables closest to the trash can are infested with flies. My family sat down at one of these tables and then had to move after five minutes. We saw the same thing happen to at least 3 other parties that came in to eat. I'm only giving this place 2 stars because our waitress was nice. All of our mediocre food plus a beer and a glass of wine came out to $75 including tip. Please spare yourself this horrendous yet somehow expensive dive restaurant and eat a decent meal at like, Popeye's or something. read more

Let me tell you that my first impression of the Brogue was from my Nova native boyfriend who claims this is the best thing to hit smack dab Earth in Great Falls, VA. Ok I bite, but will this live up to my long-lost-love, Ri Ra, in Bethesda? Maybe. A few more fish and bangers and I may be convinced. We ordered the corned beef and the fish sandwich for lunch. The fried fish is my "awesome" gauge for any place that claims to be an Irish pub in America. That and a good medium burger. So let me just tell you that the fried fish sandwich was made perfectly--so crispy, nice flaky white fish, and a banging horseradish sauce. To top it all off, I had a side of pickled veggies and never looked back. Don't be afraid to throw some salt and pepper on it. The corned beef was a decent portion. I didn't try but I also didn't hear from my boyfriend for a good 15 minutes so I assume it was delicious. I did steal some sweet potato fries and they were pretty darn good w/ the horse radish dressing. I love the environment of the Brogue. There's plenty of outdoor seating, the indoors is comfortable for family, friends, and the like. They've got a couple of great pours. The prices are reasonable and it's just an inviting environment. I can now see why this is an old neighborhood favorite because it is family friendly and adult friendly and is a great gathering place for groups small and big. Essentially, you can make it as intimate or lively as you'd like. Noise was conversation level. Service was excellent and well-paced. TIPS: Parking can be difficult to find around lunch or dinner or brunch. From what I gather, bank parking is ok on the weekends, but any other time you are in tow zone. Also, there is a speed trap right next to the restaurant so as much as you love an ice cold beer on a hot summer day, you better make friendly with your brakes. read more

We visited this traditional Irish Pub with a friend for his birthday. It was a warm day for VA and we sat inside. There are not a lot of windows so it felt cool and dark inside. We sat at the bar on comfortable chairs and our server was super friendly. We order a couple of Guinness and talked to her about what she recommended. The most popular dish is their fish and chips. They also had lobster rolls and a Maryland crab cake sandwich. I enjoyed the fish and chips. The plate came with 2 fillets that were just the right size to be crispy and not soggy in the middle. The sauce was a dill based and was pleasant. The chips were typical fries. People around us seemed to be locals and were chatting about this and that. This looks to be a popular gathering spot for the area. I hope we can visit again in the evening before we leave. read more

One of my ways to measure of an Irish place is their beer selection I was quite impressed that this place has Old Speckled Hen on tap in addition to their own "Brogue Ale" as well as the expected Guinness, Bass and Newcastle. For food, I recommend the Jack Daniels bread pudding. It made my tummy happy. On Sundays in the Snuggery (nonsmoking dining room), there is live local music. read more

We love the Old Brogue, called the "Irish Pub" by the kids. Well, to be honest, mom and dad love the pub, and the kids tolerate it. We just returned from 10 days in Ireland and now I feel confident to rate this place. I expected pubs in Ireland to be dark inside, as the Old Brogue. Surprisingly, all of the pubs we visited were better lit inside. We probably did not visit the "authentic" Irish pubs, since I still imagine that they should be darker inside. Old Brogue has two sides, as others have mentioned. The Snuggery is non-smoking and our preference on most occasions. Sunday brunch is one of the best times to visit, so that you will not feel guilty for skipping the pub side. The pub side is usually more crowded, with live music most nights. The back porch is very pleasant when the hornets are controlled. The front porch is open when it is really busy and tthe weather is nice. On March 17th, YOWZA, the place opens at 7 am. The food has not disappointed. I usually get one of the Irish dishes (beef or shepard pie, or fish dish). Non-Irish dishes like fajitas and meat loaf are delicious. Desserts are stupendous. Perhaps Johnny should have ordered dessert, as we have received those for free on birthdays (I guess that is the US way). read more

The Old Brogue is the first restaurant we have eaten out at since the pandemic began, so I was nervous. They just opened their patio seating, and we just couldn't resist, and so glad we went! Everyone was so cautious and we felt so welcomed and comfortable. From taking our temperature when we arrived to gloves, masks and tons of space between everyone, we were definitely not nervous at all! Food was good, but almost felt bad for the owner in that he most likely unknowingly doesn't know that most of his staff doesn't know how to pour a proper pint of Guinness-20 second pours with therefore giving it an unsettling taste. They don't use the proper glassware. A little training will go a long way. All the best. read more

My husband's family lives in GF's and are frequent visitors of the Brogue. We love it for several reasons: 1. You always feel like you're in on some hometown secret. Everyone knows one and other, it's cozy and sweet. 2. The bar is really fun! Again, you get a lot of local flavor. 3. Live music - many times on the weekends they have live singers. 4. Heated outdoor patio 5. Beautiful outdoor seating in the front I have to be honest, the food isn't my favorite. It's not bad, but it is always lacking just a bit. But the atmosphere trumps all here. This place is an old stand by that has been around for what seems like forever. I went for lunch on Saturday with family including my daughter. They filled right up and we were glad we got there early. It is your typical Irish bar/pub/restaurant - dark, dark wood, intimate feeling place. Most nights they have live music, but again we were there for lunch. My brother was happy to see a breakfast burrito on the specials as he was craving breakfast. They have a great selection of beers and they are served cold. All your Irish classics are on the menu. I had the fish sandwich sans the bun and it was tasty. My boyfriend had the Reuben and it was stuffed full of goodness. They have a good kids menu with a lots of options at decent prices. Slainte! read more

After 20 years of going to the Ole Brogue I no longer go there because Michael will not allow my service dog inside the restaurant. She is 15 years old and stays near me as I am handicapped. No one, staff, or patron, ever complained about us and we always sat in the corner. I am disappointed as all other are restaurants allow service dogs to be inside with their person.
