I Drove into town today from the Atlanta area to attend a family party. On my own for the evening and my cousin recommended this fine establishment. After reading the reviews I selected this pub after checking out the walking area in this quaint village I was offered a table in a quieter area or the bar and immediately found a seat at the bar. Selected a delicious stout to begin while glancing at the menu. I opted for the Shepards Pie since my last one happened to be when I was last in London. Service was awesome and my plate arrived quickly. This place was full but not overly noisy! I loved the pairing of the stout with the meal. Delicious pie and was not rushed to make room at the bar! Unfortunately, we had a mixed experience at The Union Jack. The restaurant is in the heart of downtown Winchester and there is indoor and outdoor dining. The service was very friendly and we were served quickly. I ordered the Tikka Masala which was delicious. It had the perfect amount of heat and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. However, my wife had the fish and chips--which you would expect to be on par as it's a British restaurant--but sadly it was not very good. The mushy peas were cold, the fries were soggy, and the coleslaw had gone bad. Sadly, it made for a poor experience. We would like to try this place again to give it another chance, but with so many other restaurants in the area we probably wouldn't. read more

The two stars are only because it's a cool atmosphere housed in an old bank in the pedestrian-friendly old town Winchester. Our server was inattentive at best. The cups of ketchup that came with our meals were about 1/4 clear liquid. Since there was also bottled ketchup on the table, we weren't even sure what it was. I asked the waitress and she said it was probably ketchup that the kitchen didn't shake first, and she removed them promptly and instructed us to use the table ketchup. Also, the Tabasco bottle on our table had a clear section of liquid through the center of it. Our food was OK. Nothing special, but it was edible. My boyfriend got a chicken Caesar wrap and fries, and I got a French dip. When I was trying to flag down the waitress to get my check, another man who worked there came over and said he could take the card from me, but I explained that I didn't yet get a check. He politely went and got it for me and ran it. The pen he brought didn't work. We sat there for a while looking around and trying to actively get the attention of any employee, but nobody made eye contact. I spotted a cup of pens on the waitress station, so I grabbed one myself so that we could sign and leave. There were a lot of restaurants on that strip and I wish I would've picked a different one. I should've checked Yelp first, but the cute building drew me in. An extra small note: *this did not affect the amount of stars given*, but our check featured a VA state tax of 5.3% AND an additional 6.5% "city of Winchester tax." I am from out of state, so I've never seen this before. Again, this doesn't affect my review of the restaurant because I'm sure they don't like taxes any more than I do, but it struck me as odd that a Revolutionary War history-rich region would stand for this kind of taxation by their city. read more

To start Id confidently give this place a 3.5/5, I wish Yelp would add half stars. Service and atmosphere were a 5, our server especially was fantastic and very attentive. Our particular server gave us the experience I would expect at a much higher dining establishments Ive experienced, and the tip I left reflected that. The food itself was fine, frankly a tad bland across the board. The problem lies with it being a British restaurant, as it is nearly identical to food/flavor profiles youd get in the UK the time I went over a few years back. "Loaded chips" appetizer was shockingly good, as someone who isnt a huge beer cheese fan I have no idea what they did but it was very rich and creamy and heavily lacked the processed taste you tend to get in a lot of beet cheese dishes. We got the Ruben, fish and chips, pasta primavera and bangers & mash. Ruben - corned beef was the highlight of the sandwich. Well seasoned and very flavorfully juicy. Rye bread was fine, with the dressing and sauerkraut not as spectacular. Would give a 7.5/10, not my favorite but a good ruben by all means Fish and chips - 8.5/10 - good crunch on the batter as well as a decent flake on the fish fillets. Maybe a tad more seasoning in the fish batter but well made up for with the interesting tartar sauce, which was more of a dill flavor than sour/tart I was expecting. Pleasantly enjoyed that take on tar tar sauce. Pasta - 6.5/10 - ingredients were a good combo but the execution in my opinion could have been stronger. Some of the veggies were a little undercooked. I added shrimp and that tasted good, not overcooked as you tend to see in restaurant pasta dishes. The problem was more in the sauce for the dish. Was a butter base white wine sauce and it came across bland. I feel like this dish would go better with a heavier dairy base than just butter as it was a little dry. A thicker sauce of some whole cream, the butter, wine and garlic with some parm and other seasonings I believe would make the whole dish substantially better. This theory proven as I took the leftovers home and for lunch the following day made a quick sauce, tossed the dish in it to warm it up, and enjoyed it a lot more. A thicker/creamier base sauce would take it from a 6.5 to at least a 7.5 in my opinion. Bangers - 6.5/10 - not a knock on the dish as much as the option of food overall. Had this in a pub in the UK and it tasted extremely similar, however I just wasnt a massive fan of it over there either. Sausages were great on their own, 8-8.5 by themselves, I'd eat them at a grill out and be thrilled every time. Gravy felt a tad bland and the asparagus was a little underdone. Again, I feel this is less the fault of the restaurant and more just a general food combo thats not phenomenal. Chips/Fries - 9/10 - every meal that came with fries were great. Nice flavor, some skin left on the edges (which I personally enjoy). Zero complaints, well seasoned and had a slight fluff interior with a light crisp exterior. All in all, service was stellar and enjoyed the ambiance. Food was fair but certainly was not bad at all! Would recommend this place as its in a nice historical district and was fun to visit the surrounding shops/area. 3.5/5 comfortably, if not 3.75. read more

The chips were hand cut, a little on the soggy side but good with the tartar sauce. Use the malt vinegar on everything. The Ruben sandwich: the sandwich was meh, the corned beef was sliced thick but wasn't tender enough for a thick cut so each bite was a bite full of a hunk of meat. Also came with hand cut fries. Stopped in before a concert at Bright Box to grab a bite to eat and grab a drink. Our bartender was super attentive and grabbed our drink order immediately. We placed our food order about 5 minutes after that. Our food took over an hour to arrive - and it wasn't packed. I ordered the King Charles (cross between a steak & cheese and a French dip). It was ok. My husband had the Patty Melt. Both were ok. It's a decent little pub but there are other places nearby that would probably better. Really bad service in the sense that the server rarely checked on us once food was out, thank goodness the bartender was so helpful. Did not bring out any ranch for my salad and then proceeded to argue with me and charge me 75 cents for ranch that came with my salad because the manager "remembered bringing it out" well you didn't and your rudeness will cause me and my party to never come back. Why would it be worse loosing business forever over a 75 cent ranch. There was something nostalgic about this place after so many years. I can see how I have matured after 10 years. Wow?! I can't believe it's been that long since I have been there. I was in town to surprise a friend and support his retirement and met up with another friend and the only place I could think of was one of my old hang-out spots from when I was in grad school at Shenandoah University. After catching up a bit, we decided to place our orders. I thought I'd try something new and different because in the past, I always ordered fish and chips or wings. I never deviated because I was always there to hang out and act silly, more than anything. I ordered the Shephard's Pie: lamb-beef Shepard's pie, whipped potato. This was a winner! I didn't realize it was a casserole-ish type of meal with lamb-beef, broth/gravy, mixed peas and carrots, and corn kernels. It sort of reminded me of a Chicken Pot Pie... I enjoyed it much! My friend ordered the King Charles III: shaved London broil, grilled sweet onion, provolone, tomato, horseradish sauce, and toasted hoagie roll. I had never had that dish and thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The wait staff and bartender were friendly and attentive. Great service. We ended our night at UJP with one more drink to go and then strolled around the neighborhood to see what was new and different. The only thing that ticked us off was the fact that there was a group of people who had been drinking and partying and they were extremely loud. This had nothing to do with the restaurant. My Shepherds Pie was made with minced lamb had a topping of smooth and creamy mashed potatoes slightly crisped on top. Homemade gravy came on the side and was excellent. Both dishes came out piping hot. The draft beer selection was vast. I settled on a Guinness, my wife a Boddingtons. Service was fast and professional. Our server was very helpful in offering suggestions. I'd go for 5 stars except the real English pub ambience was lacking. A very high ceiling, open seating (no booths) and lighting took away the olde English atmosphere. However, if you want a good pub meal, you won't go wrong here. read more

Wow I have so much to say about union jacks! As a former resident of the Winchester area union jacks was my local watering hole and I came there a lot! The music was fantastic, the atmosphere is great with several stories to go up and down it, you have bar area to sit at, tables and seating to sit out in the restaurant section, do you have an upstairs that's perfect for party venues and you even have a seating area where you're able to enjoy your drinks in a lounge atmosphere! It showed up not too much later with a big portion of very fresh fries. Burn your mouth hot, but nice and thick! Whoever figured out that a 4oz piece of cod could be breaded and fried to form a softball size piece of crap needs to learn about steaming vs. frying. Either the fryer was overcrowded, the oil wasn't hot enough etc. The result is ugly and ruined the experience. The "chips) were a soggy mess as well.
