The best Irish Guinness stew I've ever had . When in Dublin , I highly recommend experiencing this authentic Irish stew . The service was excellent and very accommodating with our booking . If you plan on walking in, you could be waiting awhile for a table so highly recommend making a booking on their website in advance . The atmosphere is a bit crowded but well worth it .
Great food, great atmosphere, the quintessential Irish dining experience. This is one to check off your list as a "must do" while visiting Dublin. The place is small and there's usually a line to get seated, but the tables rotate impressively fast. The food comes out quick and the service staff is on alert. Give this place a try, it will not disappoint.
Was hoping to try out some Guinness beef stew before leaving Ireland and found this place that was open and ready to serve food by ~10am. The restaurant is located on the second floor and has a cozy vibe. The seats are generally very close to each other. I opted for their 2-course early bird special (€26.95) and chose the Homemade Vegetable Soup as the starter and Braised Beef & Guinness Stew as the main. Both plates came with brown bread and butter. The stew was good but way too salty for my liking. The consistency was thick and yummy though. The vegetable soup was also on the saltier side and I wish it was more chunky. Overall, I thought the food was pretty good. The service could've been better. The employees didn't seem very pleased to be there and I felt like I was being an inconvenience just by being there. When we requested the check, they asked if we wanted to add a tip which dampened the mood.
If you're in the area, The Old Mill Restaurant should be on your list. From the traditional decor to the delicious food, this seems to be a staple spot for an authentic Irish dining experience. Thankfully, when I arrived around 1, one table happened to be opened so no wait for me. A long queue did start soon after though so just be prepared for some wait depending on when you arrive. I ordered the Seafood Chowder and the Guinness Stew. Both were very tasty! The Seafood Chowder had a good amount of seafood and the flavor was hearty but not overly heavy. Same applies to the Guinness Stew. Very hearty with lots of beef chunks but I didn't feel too heavy after eating it. The stew is definitely much different in terms of flavor and the richness (the stew was a lot more rich) but having the contrast of both dishes was ideal. To top it off, dipping the provided soda bread in each of the dishes was an added bonus. The service is very prompt and the staff are friendly. There's a decent amount of tables so turnover shouldn't be too long for those waiting in the queue. Will definitely be back on my next visit to Dublin to try the other dishes!
Hard to find as we passed it & realized it's upstairs! Small single room w/ a standard collection of wall art / signs. Asked to be re-sat & they were happy to let us choose. We asked about the soup flavor & they offered a taste and brought out a huge sample boat. Super cool. I got the cottage pie lunch portion, which is more than I could barely eat. It came with a boat of the sauce /and gravy and meat. Wife got the fish and chips... The fillet was longer than the plate and it came with a mountain of fries, both delicious. Daughter got the creamy vegetable soup and chips. She loved it but couldn't even finish half. All the portions were very generous, nobody finished their meal, too bad we couldn't have taken it back to our hotel. Server was great & funny. Love this place.
Like many have mentioned, the restaurant targeting towards tourists. I had the seafood chowder. The good: tons of seafood; the meh: salty and not very creamy, also not the freshest seafood chowder I've had. The fish and chips are far, I mean far below average. The fish isn't fresh and the peas are brown instead of green, eww. Service is average. Tips are anticipated unlike other local restaurants. There are way better restaurants in walking distance.
Tiny, old, full of character restaurant on the second floor of a building in Temple Bar. They turn and burn here so don't be dissuaded by a line up the stairs. They told us a 10-minute wait and it was just that. Service is quick and there are waiters buzzing around tending to your needs. A pint of the mother's milk (Guinness) was calling our names. And for my son's first pint in Ireland, he split the G on his first try. IYKYK Meat pie was piping hot! Good sized portion and the veggies were cooked perfectly, a gravy that was delicious, and a topping of mashed potatoes which were perfect. Well done. Son had fish and chips. It was one half of the long cut of a fish. Fried perfectly with decent chips, not too fat. May come back if looking for traditional Irish fare but lots of other places to try here.
We were here 8 years ago...accidentally found it then and the same now as we couldn't remember the name...but we have told everyone we know about our experience in 2017, it was so good! We fell in love with the ambiance and the staff! Last time we all had the fish and chips, vegetable soup, shepherds pie, beef and Guinness stew, drinks (yes...guinness) and desserts. All were so amazing we came here three times! Oh! They had a delish potato stew last time....all over Ireland the potatoe stew seems to have been replaced with potato and leek puree since COVID 19. We are trying different things this time, pasta, salads, cheesy bread, bread pudding, hamburger....and still no potato stew. Wish it would come back to Ireland. We miss it.
Our first dinner in Dublin, the reviews and photos looked amazing was the reason of choosing this place. There was queue when arriving however it was worth the wait as it was small space upstairs. They had all the traditional Irish cuisine including a FULL Flour Free Menu! We had the Famous Irish Lamb Shank and Traditional Irish Stew. They are absolutely delicious and taste buds was more than happy. It felt like pure enjoy eating them. The lamb shank was melting like butter and mind you Irish butter is freaking amazing. The flavor was outstanding. The traditional Irish stew was our favorite dish of all time. We would totally come to this spot. We for sure came back again one last time the night before we had to fly back home. As we didn't know when we will be back. I tried the cottage pie and let me tell you... exquisite and my partner had to get the Irish stew again. Overall, you have to go here :)
Located in the temple area, the Old Mill restaurant has some authentic Irish meals in this traditional pub. We ordered the chicken and chips which came with ranch and ketchup on the table 5/5. The Old Mill trio came with garlic cheese bread, chips and a delicious creamy vegetable soup 4/5. Great service from Vanessa and pleasant staff overall. Nice historic decor in the bustling traditional Irish pub.
The Old Mill restaurant is in the crowded and touristy Temple Bar section of Dublin. Typically I try to avoid areas like this for meals and general shopping, since you always get the feeling you're being gouged or not getting the experience you otherwise think you could elsewhere. The Old Mill restaurant is definitely the exception in this case. We waited on a line going down a staircase for around 40 minutes to get in, but the staff were nice enough to give us menus and serve us drinks while we waited. Once we were seated, we got the coddle and lamb shank for our meal. Coddle is definitely a more unique Irish flavor you wouldn't see elsewhere and had some good meaty flavor to it. The lamb shank was an absolute star to me. Served on the bone and so tender that it falls off the bone a fork, served with a side of mashed potatoes and veggies. We also had the death by chocolate cake for dessert which was very rich and heavy on chocolate, so the scoop of vanilla ice cream definitely helps break it up. The only slightly irritation is them pointing out and asking for a tip afterwards. So far, the other restaurants I've gone to on this trip haven't asked, tapped my card, and off we went. So, you have to wonder if that was primarily due to the restaurant's location in the touristy district. Despite this, I would certainly recommend the the Old Mill and will certainly be making a return should I ever return to Dublin.
An incredible vibrant, typical Dublin pub restaurant it's a must go. You're immediately greeted by a lovely server who just wants to help and serve so we started with glass of wine for Deb and a big old Guinness for Peter loved it. Deb had mussels that were fantastic And I had the Guinness beef stew like 4 pounds of it so good and we got our bill gave a nice tip and said goodbye and see you soon. Great night.
Decently affordable prices and wide offerings of dishes in the heart of Temple Bar area. The stew was bursting with flavor and came in huge portion with mashed potatoes, and I appreciated the mini Irish breakfast option for 10 euros.
Went to Dublin a few months ago and on my first day I arrived hungry and wanting proper Irish food and walking around all the templer bars I found this place thanks to Yelp and it did not disappoint!!! It was super packed and it's not large but it fits a good amount of people who were all enjoying time with family so the vibe is friendly and fun and we got lucky to get seats right away and wow we were blown away at the food especially having theee best fish and chips I've had and it was in Ireland not England lol Service was great too the server was nice and helped out when needed! I will go back here if I ever get back to Dublin read more

Great little whole in the wall Irish restaurant.. The cottage pie is killer, staff is attentive and quick. Lunch special had Guinness at $5.50. Heck yeah, potion size is generous, very good. Walk up the stairs and have a pint and cottage pie. Cheers! read more

Unfortunately, I have to say that The Old Mill is highly overrated and arguably not worth the wait time. After hearing/seeing many great things about this place, I felt obligated to try it out (plus, as a first time visitor to Dublin, I naturally found myself in Temple Bar already). They don't take reservations, so everyone has to wait in line by the entrance to get a spot. Granted we were there at prime dinner time on a weekend, but we ended up standing there waiting for over half an hour to get in. After getting in, we realized this is because the restaurant is actually really small, plus the fact that it's just a popular spot. The interior does have a cozy vibe though with lots of old Irish and Dublin-related memorabilia and decor, which are pretty cool. I felt like I had to go with a classic to really test out this place so ordered the Traditional Fish and Chips (19.95 EUR). I have to say, I was kind of disappointed. It was honestly kind of like fast food quality, as the fish did not have much flavor - the only real flavor just came from the fried coating. The fries were very average. I also tried the Braised Beef and Guinness Stew (19.95 EUR). I think this was better than the fish and chips but still did not stand out to me that much. The staff are pretty friendly and helpful. The service speed was pretty quick (once we got a table). Overall, if you can manage to get in here without much of a wait and are already exploring Temple Bar, then I could see this being a reasonable choice. Otherwise, if there is a long line, I think you might be better off saving your time and looking elsewhere. read more

Amazing traditional Irish restaurant near the river. Our first meal after arriving in Dublin and it was hearty portions of traditional Irish staples served during the lunch hour. Quick service with friendly banter and great food recommendations. Our entire table was pleased with the quality and taste of all the different dishes we ordered. The Old Mill Restaurant is a classic old school restaurant with wooden floors and Irish decor everywhere. Bring your appetite, as the portion sizes are large. First meal in Ireland and it was delicious!! read more
I can't explain how good the food in this place is, it's a must try. I will admit that at first I thought it was going to be a tourist trap because of its convenient location but it turned out to be one of the best meals we had while in Dublin. We ordered buffalo wings for an appetizer and they were amazing, we also had ciders to drink them out with and they were great. For our emails my boyfriend got the pie and it was so good. The best mashed potatoes you can think of on top, super hot and delicious under the bed of mashed potatoes. I ordered the stew with butter bread and wow, that stew was absolutely incredible and the bread was fresh and warm. The service was quick and the servers were kind, they gave us candy when we paid. It does get super packed of tourists and the tables are almost on top of each other (that's how close you are to other people eating there) but for delicious food it was worth it in my opinion and if I find myself back in the area I'm for sure coming back to try more things! read more

Expect wait time if you come during weekend. Is a small restaurant but mighty. The food is excellent and authentic. My Irish friend suggested me this place and definitely didn't disappoint me. Wish I can try a few more dishes, everything looks delicious. read more

Came here on vacay to get trad Irish food and this spot was PACKED. We waited around 30 min during dinner hour to get a spot, and the restaurant is small and cramped but well worth it. I went with the cottage pie which was delicious. We got the assorted bread basket for apps and it came with a delicious garlic mayo dip, so good. Overall super good spot, huge portions, decent prices. read more

Ambience: 1/1 Service: 1/1 Food: 2.5/3 This was our first stop when we visited Dublin and wow what a great way to start our trip! Old Mill really is an experience, with traditional Irish fare, music, and vibes in general. My friend and I ordered the Slow Cooked Beef & Guinness Stew and not only was the serving size huge, the stew was *super* filling - I had to take some to go! The bread it came with wasn't amazing, but overall it was still a good meal and I'd recommend trying it. The best part of Old Mill is really the decor and vibe, and I'd definitely recommend checking it out at least once for the experience! read more
This is a traditional Irish pub in a touristy area. The pub is upstairs from a small entry way with a narrow staircase, and has a good number of small tables. The waitress told me that the most popular dishes here are the Traditional Irish Lamb Stew or Braised Beef & Guinness Stew. I got the Braised Beef & Guinness Stew; it was so-so, nothing special (1 star off). I felt like it was something that I could have easily made myself at home. The bread that came with the stew was also hard and bland (1 star off), but I am not a fan of Irish soda bread in general. The Irish cheesecake was pretty good. It had a light whipped cheesecake texture. Service was very attentive and quick. I think I was in and out of there in 30 minutes. I guess you have to be quick at a high turnover touristy spot! read more
Diverse ethnic staff serving Irish classics. Be warned, you'll need to take a flight of stairs toward the heavens to get to the restaurant proper. Pretty warm inside for the October day we visited. Ordered quite a few items to share amongst the four of us. Food was decent, but nothing we raved about (Brazen Head still ranks our favorite for the majority of the items we picked at the Old Mill too). We ordered: Large Bowl of Hot & Spicy Crisp Chicken Wings (devoured) Guinness Stew (hearty and managed to finish across four people) Seafood Chowder (Yes) Mussels (Alway yes in Europe) Cottage Pie (ended up taking most of it as takeaway) Salmon and Linguini seafood pasta (oddly fishy, but our forks kept finding their way back to it) Still, glad we tried a historical spot, but will be open to other restaurants next time. read more

The lamb shank was cooked very nicely. The reduction it was in was excellent. One cannot go wrong with the cottage pie. Inside this place was hotter than the devils gooch. 19C/67F outside and no less than 27C/80F inside. Probably, because they pack everyone in there like fish in a can. For our last night in Ireland, our party of 15 were able to get same-day reservations at The Old Mill Restaurant, located in the Temple Bar area. We walked in a few minutes before our reservation and saw no available table - this place is tiny and the line is out the door. We weren't seated until 20 minutes after our reservation time - but the food was definitely worth the wait! Event with 15 people, it came out quickly and with no issues! Personally, I shared the mussels (delicious and the broth was so creamy and delicious), and the lamb shank (giant, yummy portion with a generous serving of mashed potatoes). Other people in our party really enjoyed the Irish stew and the cottage pie. One person didn't love their salmon pasta - but ate all of it anyway! Overall, this place has delicious food, with generous portions, but it is a cozy, little place, so I highly recommend reservations! read more

Cozy, warm Irish dining on the second floor. It's not a huge restaurant, but we were seated within 15 minutes on a weekday evening. Staff was nice and bantered with us. I got the #22 Braised Beef & Guinness Stew (€15.95) and a Mills Side Salad (€3.50). The stew comes with 2 brown bread slices and butter. A good amount of beef and loads of carrots and celery. Perfect food for the cold weather. The side salad was a nice mix of spring mix, arugula, tomato, cucumber, and carrots topped with a vinaigrette. Walking around Dublin was great. Thanks to yelp and google maps, we found the Temple Bar area and this gem. (Best meal I had during my time in Ireland.) Almost missed this quaint bar since it is upstairs. Decor was lovely, staff were quick and efficient. I measured almost every meal with this one and was disappointed. SO started with fish and chips and I got the mussel / chowder entree. Both were very very good. If it were a neighborhood spot, I'd eat there every day. Mussels were in a milky broth both tender and juicy. Perfect. Delicious. Chowder was mostly salmon bits which I guess I was expecting something different. It was, however, a lovely creamy soup with lots of salmon. Next trip to Ireland, I will revisit this establishment. read more

We loved our experience at Old Mill Restaurant. The food was super delicious - we got the Cottage Pie and gluten free Traditional Irish Stew (including gluten free bread). I finished my Irish Stew (yes, scraped the bowl clean) and didn't feel overly stuffed after. We had wonderful service and the vibe of the restaurant gave us a really cozy, homey feel. So happy we close to start our vacation here! read more

My daughter and I came here for our first meal in Dublin. The staff were so sweet and very accommodating and we were seated at our table quickly. We were tired from our long trip to Dublin and wanted to have a light meal so their seafood chowder and vegetable soup sounded amazing and were perfect. I was sad because I really wanted to try their Irish stew. The chowder and soup were delicious and perfect amount. The restaurant is upstairs and rather small but has great atmosphere and felt comforting. read more

This is our 2nd time dining at the Old Mill. They serve authentic Irish food. The restaurant was full of people both times we visited here, as the food was great. I recommend this place to try local Irish food like Irish Stew, Lamb Shank etc. read more

Went here alone because my best friend and international travel companion met a woman who he loves more than he loves getting lunch for the thousandth time with his absolute boy. I actually get it. Honestly, none of our lunches together have ever been that great. Love over lunch any day. LFG This does not apply to brunch or dinner. My solo lunch at the Old Mill was great. I walked by it the day before, someone was handing out menus - I didn't take one because I, personally, am not going to carry a menu around all day when not hungry. Anyway, the day of my visit, I looked on Yelp for a place to eat (alone). Old Mill pops up. Good reviews, central location, traditional Irish food - sold. I took a bus from Crumlin and completed my journey on foot by following my google maps app and looking like a tourist - as one does. I get to the entrance and I'm like damn - this is the place that hands out menus. They got me!! I sat next to a woman who was also alone but she was on FaceTime the entire time. Ordered my food and a drink. The staff was super attentive and the food was really good. Steak was cooked perfectly with onions that had great flavor, and the chips were great too. The decor was great and the good meal and alone time gave me time to reflect on how stoked I was to be in Ireland.
