While staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites next door - I noted the proximity of The Omelette Shop to the hotel. I visited on my second day during my stay in Grand Rapids. I ordered a custom omelette with spinach, mushrooms onions, avocado, sausage, and cheese, plus a side of sausage gravy, and glasses of tomato juice and water. When the omelette came out - it was huge! However, it tasted like they had added something to the eggs, like pancake batter. I can't be 100% sure - but other chain restaurants do this as well (such as IHOP). It does something to the texture - and in this case the texture off the eggs came off as overcooked. I am going to start asking what's in the omelette - just eggs? Or eggs and something else? There was also way to much cheese melted on the top. It would have been better taste and texture-wise if the cheese had been mixed into the omelette. Finally, the sausage gravy was rather bland. It needed some seasoning - salt and pepper - and it was a bit "flour-ey" (not really a word), but texturally tasted like it had to much of something mixed in to thicken it (flour or cornstarch). Stopped in before driving up to Muskegon and Grand Haven. We had a pot of coffee at the table within seconds of sitting down it seemed. We both ended up ordering the crab cakes eggs Benedict. Got some omelettes delivered from here on a lazy morning. The food was really good. Not going to blow your socks off but tasted like good old home cooked breakfast with fresh ingredients. My food was cold and bad and my service was bad. I thought I would like it more because I was so hungry but everything tasted bad except for my bread which was thick and fat and good. Sorry, my dad did not like his food either. He said his skillet was not even skillet cooked. It tasted like microwaved eggs and cold soggy hash brown thrown into a skillet to fool him. His coffee had grounds and a hair in it and the server never refilled it for him. Our silverware had dirt on it and we never got another set until after our food got to us bf we asked twice. The omelettes are really good, with lots of fillings ( choose your own or pick from menu) and the eggs perfectly done. I have come a couple times for work related breakfasts or lunch with co-workers. However, they do run out of fillings , " we are out of feta today! Would you like something else instead?" this has happened multiple times I am here. Everyone always seems happy with their choices in the end anyway though. My favorite is the California omelette which has huge chunks of veggies and avocado. Mostly people order omlettes but I also hear the salads are good. Lots of coffee with the little creamers. Toasts come with strawberry jam. Everything is very down-home American, and there are usually a few choices so you can find something you like. The service has been nice, if a bit on the slow side occasionally. I'm staying at the "very" nearby Hampton Inn, whose breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. Sunday morning, 8:30 and to be honest I was expecting a long wait. Instead I find the restaurant less than half full, lots of open tables. We waited what seemed like an eternity between when our hostess showed up, asking for coffee and finally receiving the coffee. Not sure why. But it was getting to the point where you wonder if they forget... I ordered the Crab Benedict with a side of fresh fruit, my colleague ordered the western omelette, with hash browns. Food was served much quicker than the coffee. My eggs were slightly over done, (not yolky enough for my taste) the crab cakes were pretty tasty, but the english muffin was totally underdone. The consistency of soft spongy bread didn't hold up well against everything else. I didn't order an omelette; I had read elsewhere on Yelp that it's likely added pancake mix to the eggs, and when the omelette showed up it certainly had a very large "rise" to it. Apparently it tasted good, so - there you go. Hash brown too were crispy and tasty. Service was otherwise good, and is certainly a better option to hotel food - but at around $15/head it is more expensive too. read more

Food was great but when I got the bill, there was a surcharge included. I asked what the surcharge was for and she told me to help cover the cost of everything because everything cost more nowadays. We both ordered the Corned Beef hash with Hash Browns and Eggs, with toast. The Hash was made with fresh corn beef which was a treat, but the hash browns they referred to on the menu were actually a part of the ingredients of the Hash. not a problem... Everything was perfect and the hash browns were browned and crispy just the way I like without having to ask! I loved the quick and friendly service and an entire booth to myself and my boy.
