We were really expecting better based on all the 5 star reviews. DH and I shared the Leelanau scramble and (seasonal special) pumpkin spice pancakes. The best things were the sourdough bread, strawberry jam and fresh squeezed orange juice. The redskins were seasoned with a spice that I'm pretty sure was curry powder, a strange flavor for breakfast potatoes IMO.. They were overcooked (over-flipped?) and rolled around a spiced cream cheese type filling. I gave this restaurant a two star rating after our experience today. The two stars is for the food itself, it wasn't spectacular but it was a decent breakfast spot. The reason for this low rating, was our waitress. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the server since she failed to introduce herself. We were met with the worst attitude as soon as she came to take our drink order after finishing her cigarette break. Ultimately, after ordering our food, the service became horrendous. We will not return to this location because of this waitress. On our first day in Grand Rapids, my husband and I were looking for a place to have breakfast. We found the omelette shoppe in an online search. I had the German omelet, which was delicious. My husband had scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon and wheat toast with homemade strawberry jam. While we were eating , we overheard another waitress describe the strawberry shortcake pancakes. They sounded so good we couldn't get them off our minds. So we went back and had the pancakes, so glad we did. They were the best pancakes we ever had. The loose leaf tea is served in a french press. I have been to The Omelette Shoppe 2 times now in as many weeks and am rapidly becoming a regular. Service has been good and the food has bordered on some the best breakfasts I have ever had. I work as a cook and sometimes work late so my first 2 visits have been after noon which may account for the relatively low volumes and high amount of attention I received from the Front of House staff. It is worth mentioning that I received what I would consider near-exemplary service from my server on the busier of the 2 days I visited. You know a server is paying you some attention when they hear the one, solitary straw suck you give the bottom of your glass and come to refill your water. She also offered me plain half and half while I had to ask my other server for it. Both were extremely polite, professional and timely. My food experience was the opposite in terms of quality v. customer volume. I ordered the Buttermilk Pancake Platter. Eggs were cooked perfectly as ordered. Bacon was the perfect blend of crispy and chewy. The pancakes, though... Oh my God the pancakes. On my first (less busy) visit they were a perfect even, pale, golden brown on both sides. On my second visit they were just a tad overcooked and not as even. On both visits they were absolutely delicious. Some of the best examples of buttermilk pancakes I have ever eaten. Creamy and buttery they melt in your mouth with only a couple ounces of syrup to sweeten them up. I know this place is named for it's omelettes and maybe I will get there eventually but, for now, it is the pancakes that are bringing me back through this restaurant's doors. My sole criticisms thus far are that the French Press coffee isn't really worth the extra money they charge for it. The regular brewed coffee is just fine and far cheaper. Also the variety of sauces at each table seems to vary mysteriously but the only 'normal' hot sauce I have had access to is Frank's Red Hot so far. Some Cholula or Sriracha (even Tabasco) at the tables would be appreciated. I will definitely be returning to The Omelette Shoppe in the near future and start bringing friends and family with me. Thus far I have received good-to-excellent levels of service and been served pancakes that I am beginning to suspect may have addictive properties. I have only given them 4 stars as I have only had a couple of visits. If the next few inevitable visits go as well I will likely post an update and consider increasing the score. read more

The floors and tables were super sticky and I didn't even want to touch the menu it was so dirty. I decided on one of the special rolled pancakes and they came out burnt. I really wanted to love this spot but they couldn't stop getting in their own way unfortunately. After waiting 40 minutes to get in on a Sunday lunch run, which was understandable. We got to our seat and ordered some chocolate milks for the kids. Well after waiting about 10 minutes else find out they're out of chocolate milk. Ok how about a root beer I suppose, nope they don't have that either. So we just got lemonade. Next we ordered our food. Around 10 minutes after ordering the Chimichurri omelette I am told they are out of chimichurri sauce... ok. Then after waiting for our food for over an hour (as other tables are literally walking out because it's taking so long) the first plate arrives at our table. No joke, they served our food one plate at a time to everyone at our table over a 15 minute span. Then they completely forgot to make the final plate at our table. It arrived at the same time as the check... No apology, no discount on the forgotten food. Just the full bill. Definitely the last time we will be coming here. The price of food is good and portions just right. I like talking to Lizz and she makes good recommendations. I have gone to other places and they take you for granted. This place is right next door to the hotel we were at and was SUCH a wonderful place to eat. We opted to eat outside and our waitress was so sweet. I ordered the country skillet without the sauce and it was AMAZING! I've been to a lot of breakfast places and this skillet was probably the best I've ever had. A group of my friends got other skillets, omelettes, quiches, and French toast. We also got cinnamon rolls which were so gooey and soft. We LOVED it here! I've eaten here several times and have loved it, but it seems to have really gone downhill. The flavor of the avacado chicken salad was good, but the sandwich was mostly lettuce. The Terra veggie chips were ALL CRUMBS! It was served on a small round plate so that when i went to pick up my sandwich, half the chip crumbs spilled onto the table. Our favorite thing about breakfast at the Omelette Shoppe is the carafe of hot, delicious coffee they leave at your table so that you can top off your mug at will. For us, the coffee at a breakfast spot is paramount, and the coffee here is definitely good. The portions are generous but not immense. Every dish we've tried has been very good. Their Mexican-inspired dishes are among our favorites, as is the French toast. Their low-fat turkey sausage was surprisingly good, and their breakfast potatoes are tasty too.
