If I could split my review, I would give 5 stars for the excellent orange juice. However, I would give 1 star for the oranges. When we asked if the Valencia oranges were good for eating we were given an emphatic, "yes!" However, when we got home we found that they are way too fibrous and pulpy to even begin to eat. Stopped by this cute shop on my drive through Florida last week. I tried some OJ, which was absolutely the best I've had. If I'm planning on being in the area again, I'll be sure to bring my cooler to bring some OJ home. Samples are available of different jams and jellies and honey. I tried some and ended up getting some. MMMMM these are good! Only reason a 5th star wasn't added is because I found the prices of the oranges and grapefruit to be pretty high. This is my absolute favorite place to stop when driving 301. Growing up in FL with fresh squeezed OJ routinely, I can say that this is the best OJ I have ever had. Marmalade is also excellent. Fun citrus snacks as well. It would be a cool throw-back place, except that it's just original. It has been the same for decades. Clean restrooms. I just love stopping here. The Orange Shop is one of those old Florida roadside attractions that has survived where most have folded up and are decaying on roadsides. Being a lover of Old Florida things I decided to stop by. If you have been to one in other areas of Florida they are somewhat similar, offering orange-related products juice, jams, jellies, fruit, etc. It is definitely a place to stop by and see, do not expect the most competitive prices, I normally pick up something that I do not find in my local grocery store. Oranges? I'm not sure the fruits here qualify as the standard orange. You peel them and break off a segment to eat. What you expect is a mix of chewy pulp and a little juice. What you get though, is like breaking a capsule of flavor and juice. Lots of juice. Your mouth will be doing a "happy dance" from it all. Never had a better orange. Take home: nothing special, not worth your money. I ordered a package of oranges for my parents about 2 weeks before Christmas. It did arrive before Xmas but after sampling then I was really disappointed. I've had fresh from the grower oranges before (not these guys) and they are super sweet and juicy. The orange shop oranges were nothing special and tasted no better and maybe worse than store bought oranges. Very disappointing. Definitely not worth the money. read more

It amazes me - we stopped mid November on our way back to PA. Bought Navels - opened them when we got home. Several were rotten; most were very DRY like they didn't have juice. I contacted the owners through website and received a very nice response about the dry oranges may have come from new trees which sometimes do not have much juice. The rotten ones - they said should not have been there. They told me to send them my address and they would replace them. It is now a month later - contacted them through the web two times and now a third time. Still nothing! Needless to say, we will not be stopping for their products again! read more

Quality of The Orange Shop grapefruit has declined sadly over the years. Not what it used to be just a few short years ago. Lackluster customer service. Had to dispute the charge with our credit card company since the customer service had no consistent follow-up. I took an out-of-town friend to the Orange Shop to get the Florida oranges he wanted before flying back up north. The shop is quaint. We tasted the samples of navel oranges and were quite impressed, so we bought two bags of them, one for him and one for me. Both bags were very disappointing in that they were dry and not very tasty. Obviously, they aren't providing samples from the same batch of oranges they are selling. This seems deceptive to me. I won't take any other friends to this place. We'd be better off getting oranges via mail order (not from the Orange Shop) or from a friend's back yard. read more

Poor, Poor Amanda D. She sounds like a disgruntled, former employee who got fired for a poor, rude attitude and crappy customer care. I do feel sorry for her. I'm a Floridian and know what good fresh squeezed Florida orange juice tastes like. I recently drove home a different route from a trip back to Gainesville and drove by this little shop. I had to make a u-turn to stop in since I passed it. I sampled the OJ and bought 2 quarts and a pint to drink on the way home to southeast Pasco County. The fresh squeezed FL OJ at The Orange Shop in Citra is by far the best of the OJ stands I've stopped in. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. The store is bright and clean and although small, the Ladies room was one of the cleanest I've been in while traveling. I wasn't afraid I'd pick up something nasty on my shoes and drag stuff in my car. I will definitely go out of my way to return home through Citra just so I can stop in and get more OJ. I always travel with a cooler and ice packs so I won't worry about keeping the temp cool. Peter S., keep doing what you are doing. I am always on the lookout for family owned businesses to support, and yours is a good one. When I lived in Gainesville I didn't go to the farmers market very often and did not see your OJ there. Darn. Oh well... Just wish I lived closer to Citra so I could keep stocked up on the fresh juice, but will stop in as often as I can. Well worth the price for a healthier juice. P.S. This is one of those places you see and it screams "stop here tourists". Well, there's a reason people know about this place. It is in an orange grove, and while their oranges may not always come from that grove, it does add to the vibe of this little shop. The oranges that they do sell are always full of flavor. I think the prices are high, but, you are supporting a local run business and you know for sure you're getting fresh Florida oranges. The freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juices are yummy, and I'll always stop in to grab a quart. I also really really like their vidalla orange dressing. Wow! Not low-cal, but delicious. I love reading that not only is this a local business, but it's obviously a family business for everyone that works here. Instead of passing judgment on the business or people that work there, perhaps a friendly hello would serve you better. We stopped in on our drive from the Tampa Bay area home to PA last month and I'm so glad we did. It's an adorable little shop on 301 with nice people, and good products. We brought home some oranges and grapefruit, and got my mom some marmalade. The Orange Shop was a great last Florida stop on our way home. Just an FYI about "The Orange Shop" in Citra, FL: There are 2 elderly black men that work there and you honestly couldn't pay them to leave! They love working there and have been there for at least 40 years! They were there when my husband was a child and he'll be 50 next year. So needless to say, they're a big part of the store and it wouldn't be the same without them. They aren't racist at all, they hire the labor that they can afford, period. I know people that work there and its a lot of work that a lot of people won't do. A lot of orange stands don't sell their own oranges now due to there not being as many groves as there used to be. Its just another small business that's trying to survive during these rough economic times. As long as the fruit is good, I'm happy and their oranges have always been really good. On Jan 11 I ordered a combo of Page, Sunburst, and Orlando oranges. They arrived on Jan 31, all just rolling around in a big flat box with no packing whatsoever. I really can't identify 3 different types of oranges. I have tried several trying to get ones that appear somewhat different. They are extremely difficult to peel, and absolutely loaded with seeds. I can't remember when I've had an orange with so many seeds. The skin is very thin and they are juicy, but not sweet. A waste of $41.99. I do better at the store or Harry and David. Interesting that unlike many sites for ordering, there is no place for reviewing the product on their site. read more

Do not waste your time or money! My grandmother used them for YEARS before she passed away. After her passing, I took over sending the family Oranges each year around Christmas. It's a tradition... Last year was MY first time handling the order. Everyone received their orders no problem. That being said, Nobody knew that I had even sent them. The message that was SUPPOSE to be sent, was NOT. They received a note saying "like the old days." That's it. They didn't put the message in and even worse, it didn't even say who sent them. So basically a "mysterious" person sent the package. I called the orange shop time and time again asking if they had sent them. Keep in mind every time I called I was on hold for at least 20 minutes while they tried to "figure it out." Because the message was missing I never heard from any of my family members saying they received them. I didn't want to call and ask because that would have defeated the purpose of a surprise! Fast forward a year. (Gluten for punishment I guess) I once again try to send the oranges. I tried to order online but decided to call instead thinking that if I talk to them in person they COULDN'T screw it up. WRONG!!! I sat on hold for over 45 minutes being transferred from person to person. After 45 minutes on hold, I was told they need to call me tomorrow when they can figure out how to place my order correctly?!?!? Are you kidding me!?!? There is a million different places to order oranges from. The only reason I even tried to use them again is because my grandmother did for so many years. Again, tradition. My advice: use ANY other orange shop to place your order. These people will test your patience, screw your order up and over charge you! I hope someone from is establishment will actually read this and hopefully make some much needed changes. DOUBTFUL!!! Purchased their oranges as a gift and also for myself, both arrived badly damaged and leaking all over the place; the oranges themselves were soft and mushy Old/over ripe, which made them easily smashed during the delivery process. They replaced them but the replacement arrived almost as bad as the first shipment. Would never order from them again. read more

Loved the Old Floridian feel. Employees were very nice, and all products I tried were superior. Bought some Orange Grilling Sauce that I can't wait to try! Floridian jelly slices were some of the best I ever had. (I love this candy, and buy it often!) They did not have samples out, but when I asked, they happily opened a tray. YUM! Samples of juice caused us to buy a pint each - would've bought more but as it must be refrigerated within 3 hours wasn't possible. Loved being able to taste each type of fruit available - we settled on Valencia's. Already wishing we bought additional to share with friends! I have no idea whether pricing is "high as compared to competition", but we feel you pay for quality, and we certainly got it. No complaints. (I cannot imagine comparing this fruit establishment to one of those commercial citrus shops off the interstates - please.) Of course it is touristy, it went into business to serve tourists! (Why is the word "touristy" always seen as a negative??) Loved the history behind it, loved the sign, and am only sorry we didn't get to meet Fletcher. I thought I had missed Honeybell season but then, at the end of January, I received an email from The Orange Shop telling me they still had plenty. I placed my order on February 2nd and, according to FedEx tracking, the shipment left on the 7th. It arrived at my house on the 11th. I opened the box and was shocked and disappointed to find that 30% of the two trays of oranges were brown and rotting on the bottom side. I emailed the Orange Shop and received an immediate auto reply that they would get back to me soon. Upon further inspection the oranges that appeared to be fine were soft, "mushy", and rotten on one side. I never did hear back from The Orange Shop. Two trays of expensive oranges have now become very expensive compost. I am truly disappointed. read more

Maybe if you can go directly to the Orange Shop the naval oranges might me ok. I ordered some on line and these were terrible, 2 were split and rotten, the others had black and soft spots on them, two that were just ok were not fit to eat, they tasted like they were left on the wet ground for a few days. These supposedly naval oranges were about as big as a lemon and had the color of a grapefruit, not big and orange like their web site pictures. Plus, I live in Louisiana, these were shipped to Texas, then to Mississippi, then finally to me. I was under the impression the product would be shipped directly from their store in Citra. I was sent out another shipment for free and these oranges were better but not by much. At least none were rotten in the box, but they were definitely not big. I could have gotten better oranges at a local grocery store. Will not buy again and these people should be ashamed of themselves for deceiving the public with pictures that are beautiful and then send out crap. read more

In 2005 I moved from Ky. to Ocala to work at a Thoroughbred training track in Citra, about a mile from this little shop. I stopped in almost daily to buy their fresh orange juice and bagged oranges. I can't say whether the oranges came from the grove that surrounds the shop or not, but they were good, like drinking sunshine! The people was friendly and helpful--couldn't have been nicer. Since moving back to Ky., I order oranges and grapefruits from them and have never been disappointed in their produce. read more
