My wife & I went to your establishment today on my Birthday I have not been here in quite sometime. The service and waitress were very nice but I was disappointed with the food was sub par. I ordered breakfast and maybe consumed 1/3 and had to stop. Also I noticed the floors/ booths were in need of a really good cleaning. I have been a resident of Auburn for over 40 year's and have had several businesses here including several food businesses & the skating rink in Auburn. This had been one of my 'go-to' restaurant for quick pick up these days (COVID 19 days). The staff and the manager / owner are all wonderful and demonstrate their care for customers' safety by wearing masks at all times. However I was there yesterday to pick up my order and the young cashier there was passé about her face covering and she talked with her mouth exposed. So I'd just say buyers beware. read more

On my second visit --My wife had the Reuben Sandwich with a cup of the Chicken Noodle soup, and enjoyed both! This time, I decided to try the Pork Chop Dinner, with Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, with Ravioli Soup as my second "side". I liked the Ravioli Soup even better than the Chicken Noodle. They really make awesome soups at this Mel's. Then out came the Pork Chop platter. Two very large pork chops, smothered in Grilled Onions. Since I don't like onions, these were eaten by my dining companion...hehehe. Mashed Potatoes were quite good but the gravy could use a little more spice. The vegetables weren't mushy and they give you a lot! Did I mention the slice of corn bread with honey and butter, on the side? All of this (with the cup of soup) for only $10. We both enjoyed an excellent diner meal for just under $20, without any coupons or specials (we paid regular menu prices). By the way, I could not finish the dinner and boxed up one whole pork chop, half of the potatoes, and the remaining onions for wifey's lunch tomorrow! Service was fantastic. I loved watching the waiter cater to everyone equally. Even if someone wanted just water no ice he was friendly and welcoming. We ordered fish and chips, a salad, and corn dog, fries for the lil one. We decided to finish our meal with a banana spit. The waiter said he could go crazy with building it for us. Good Stuff! It had been a couple of years since I had been in Mels diner and I was actually looking forward to it but it was an awful experience. We had ordered an specific salad that was on the menu, the waitress completely misunderstood what we wanted and got us a different thing. We ask her to fix it because that's not what we wanted, she doesn't understand us again so she gets the manager. The manager comes makes sure that we know that's she's the owner and that she's never served that kind of salad (although it's in the menu) she was super rude about the whole situation and treated us like we were stupid or something. They ended up switching the waiter which was really nice and made the situation better (at least showed us that he cared) he was really polite and respectful. But overall it was honestly the worst service I've had in a while I don't think I'll ever be back here. read more

My wife and I were passing through town Saturday morning and stopped to use the bathroom and buy some sodas. We liked what we saw so much that we returned for dinner later that evening. Owners Shelly & Tony were excellent hosts and server Kendal was very attentive and helpful. My wife had a Cobb salad and I had a deluxe burger. Both were deliciously prepared with generous portions. We'll definitely return next time we're in town. Only negative was the obnoxious sign "No Shirt No Shoes No Service" painted on the door. I love going barefoot, had just washed my feet and didn't really want to put dirty shoes on to eat. I don't understand the issue. read more

Growing up in San franciscoedgave me an advantage of knowing the original Mel's and believe me when I say Mel's Diner in Auburn is surely not even close. I ordered the Monte Cristo with coleslaw and a strawberry milkshake. Milkshake was good but lacked the old time style of ice cream lumps. The Monte Cristo was dry and like eating french toast that had sat around drying out. I guess in our day of "Fat" consciousness butter is used sparingly but for a good Monte Cristo it needs to be cooked in loads of butter and egg batter dripping off. Syrup should also be offerred, not just jelly. The coleslaw was bland and worst of all the kosher pickle wasn't chrip but soggy. Call me a stickler, but if you call yourself the Oringinal Mel's diner then delivery on that part of culinary history that resembles the original. But if history serves me right the best Monte Cristo sandwich was made at the Red Roof on California Street, circa 1964. read more

I really enjoyed Mel's Diner. The line out the door tells me others enjoy it too! Not cheap, but far from expensive. This is a great place for a burger. The frys are simply perfect! Not good- food took forever it so slow & it wasn't at all busy! Finally got our food eggs were barely cooked looked disgusting I had to ask them to cook them to over easy (they were Raw) finally got my meal back and everything else was cold the English muffin was now completely soggy because they took so long to get the eggs to over easy, my husband had asked for extra eggs and milk waited 15minutes to get the milk and another 10 for the his extra eggs was suppose to get a gravy instead of hollandaise sauce with my eggs bbenitict as they don't do the hollandaise after a certain time anyway I never got that either. This I my favorate Mels and it happens to be my closest. We come here with our car after every Auburn Cruise Night and park on the side with the others and of course the Duce Coupe. The people here are always friendly. The portions are always large and the food cooked the way you ask for it. Our favorate are the Mel's Fies that come with Cheese, Onions and Sour Cream. We order it with out the Cream however. Normally there is no wait and at the same time you don't feel like you are being pushed through. read more

Today's meal was a 2 star experience. Eggs Benedict had solid yolks and the price went up over 20% since my prior visit. I should have learned from my prior visit to Mel's Diner in Auburn when I ordered Eggs Benedict and had the same problem... eggs cooked to where the yolk was solid instead of runny. Last time I was there, Eggs Benedict cost $10.69. This visit, the price was $12.99. I love Eggs Benedict and order them often at many restaurants and I am not that picky about having them cooked exactly right, but these eggs had fully solid yolks that were sticky-flaky, just slightly less than hard-boiled. If I had more time, I would have asked them to recook, but we needed to get going. Even with solid yolks, the Hollandaise sauce picked up some of the slack to make the meal tasty. The waitress observed my dish and applied a 20% discount to my dish for "POOR FOOD" as noted on the receipt. I live in Auburn and will continue to visit Mel's on occasion, but I will go elsewhere when I want Eggs Benedict from now on. read more
