Rainbow cone

Such a. Fun little spot to get a unique cone. This is located at the buona shop, right outside of it. When we went it was not busy, quick service and kind worker. The ice cream was delicious I loved each flavor. There are a few other options on the menu too and lots of other flavors. They have some tables to enjoy your ice cream outside too.

I've heard so much hype about the famous Rainbow Cone that I finally had to try it after eating at Buena which it is right outside of. There were a few people eating out front (they don't have their own indoor seating), but there was no line so I got to order right away, and with one person taking orders and one person filling them, I got my cone very quickly. The "rainbow cone" consists of chocolate, pistachio, strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), and orange sherbet. It is definitely a bit of a odd combination I wouldn't choose myself but it was good. If I were to go again I'd probably just get one or two flavors. I felt it was a little weird how they basically just rest the ice cream on top of the cone, with no ice cream actually in the cone and it's a little on the pricey side for ice cream, but nice for an occasional treat!

We had wanted to come here once before when we were out for dinner in McHenry once before, but when we left the restaurant it was raining. We thought, heck, a little rain ain't gonna stop us. But as we started to wend our way through these dark, unlit side streets, the rain became torrential and we turned around to look for main road and lights. So here we were on a beautiful Sunday and came across Rita's and even though we just had a filling lunch, we stopped in. And crazily enough, we got a parking spot right out front. Though the road is very busy and I don't suggest parking on it with kids in the car. Just drive around the corner and park. I had no idea about other parking because we were in an area that we were unfamiliar with. My wife got the black raspberry flavor and I got chocolate banana mixed with campfire marshmallow. Wow!!! So freakin' good, and creamy and delicious. Can I explain how good it was? It was so good that I don't need to compare it. It's packed with flavor but not overly so. The chocolate banana was like eating a chocolate covered banana. The campfire marshmallow tasted like I was at that bonfire. I was in heaven. I'm still in heaven. Why? Because I'm typing this up months later and my mouth is watering as I reminisce about it. Now I want Rita's and there isn't a close location. Dammit. I'll have to go tomorrow and get some. That's how good it was!

I had a dentist appointment and they told me only soft foods, ideally liquid diet for the next day or two. So I looked up on Yelp for ice cream near me to go get a milkshake, and here I am! When you walk in, you get a modern take on an old-time ice cream shop. The red and white checkered floor, the 1950s and 1960s ice cream shop menu offerings, and the rockabilly music on the sound system. I would say customer service matches as well, as the young man was very polite which was such a nice change from so many places in 2024. I ordered a Harry Belafonte, which is basically a vanilla milkshake with diced up fresh banana. The young man was willing to swap the soft serve vanilla ice cream for chocolate at my request. The milkshake comes out quite thin, but with a nice flavor. The milkshake however what six dollars, which I found too expensive for what I got. Then I got an orange dreamsicle soft serve ice cream. The young man struggled to explain that the base was a vanilla ice cream and they put in some sort of orange powder. This definitely was not worth $4 is the flavor was kind of orange creamsicle and kind of chemical. The shop is super clean, has a really wonderful five. I just wish the product was better and at a better price.
