I'm a sandwich lover, so I like to find new places wherever I go. This is located in the corner of a Shell gas station just north of MKE. Unfortunately, I won't be back. I ordered the White House with everything except the oil. I asked for and paid to add pickles, they forgot the pickles. Uggh! Here's the thing, the sandwich has absolutely NO FLAVOR! It's like someone turned off my taste buds. The bread was soft, there was plenty of meat, I was eating it, but I wasn't tasting anything! I didn't taste the ham, or the turkey or the cheese or the onions, or the tomato, nothing! I visited the location on Bluemound road 3-23-26. I ordered a meatball sub. When I say this was the worst sandwich I have ever could imagine coming from this shop. This was suppose to be a hot sandwich first of all, the cheese was not melted and the meatballs was not saucy almost like they let these meatballs unthaw on the counter and then used them. I'm very disappointed and saddened that some of our favorite eateries do not care about their customers anymore . I live about 25 minutes away from there and it just was a total bust. I've always loved their subs. It's been a few years since I've had one and it did taste a little different to me. Maybe they changed the mayo? The oil? Maybe nothing and it's just me which is entirely possible. Either way, they still make a good sandwich at a decent price. This location is fast and friendly, always a good stop if you're in the area dropping off or picking up someone at the airport! The space is very basic, they have limited bar style seating if you choose to eat there. They say to keep your sandwich in the bag, but I eventually take it out about halfway through. There's a gas station connected so it's also convenient if you need to grab gas or something else. Check it out! read more

I'm part of a Milwaukee Foodie Facebook group where I constantly saw recommendations for Suburpia. I love a good roast beef sandwich but I just can't stand places like cousins. So after much anticipation I decided to go ahead and give it a try. It definitely lived up to the hype! When I got there, only the roast beef had a post-it that read "$1 off" and "no spiced oil." I was very confused by this lack of oil. I think the cashier lady was getting frustrated with me because I was under the impression that their special sauce went on all of the subs. But she stated that each sub had its OWN special spiced oil. Hence the $1 off because there wasn't a special oil to pair with it. I opted for the roast beef anyway and deducted a star from my yelp review since I didn't get to try this famous sauce. But then, lo and behold, there was a soda cooler with many different options for drinks. And in it, sat the utmost delicious red beverage I've ever tasted; a Code Red Mountain Dew. I NEVER find these at any fast food/to-go places and it's my favorite soda ever. Alas, I added a star for this feature. I hope the next time I return, they still have code red! But listen, the roast beef sandwich was absolutely delicious and hit the spot. They made it quite fast too (faster than JJs "freaky fast"). My husband and I remember Suburpia from back in the day (1970's) My now husband was in a Punk band and I worked the after bar hours at a Surburpia in Milwaukee on 27th Street. It was a wonderful time! Great atmosphere, clean fresh food-made to order , Sandwiches with creative names, great service & good times. Thank goodness, not much has changed. Wow not at all what I expected, but crazy delicious. I'm so sad that I waited this long to try Suburpia! I've been driving past it for months and been meaning to stop. So as far as the people who say its too oily....these are the people that don't really "get it" Suburpia has all your standard sub sandwich variations, turkey, roast beef, salami..whatever, but what makes it different is this oil-based dressing they pour over it. This dressing has a phenomenal seasoning to it AND they put the sandwich on super hardy, thick french bread which prevents it from becoming a big soggy mess. The bread is just thick enough to soak up a good portion of the oil and seasoning... There literally is a sign posted to the left of the counter that shows you how to unwrap the sub AS YOU EAT it. No, don't try and take it out of the bag and hold it with your hands...you wouldn't eat a dipped Italian beef with your hands and complain your fingers were dirty, this is a similar situation. Don't think this place is very well known due to the location. I mentioned at work this morning I had one of the best subs of my life at Suburpia and literally heads swiveled and people asked me WHERE there was still an original location open. Nobody seemed to know they are right across the street from the airport connected to gas station on the corner! Thought it was a great value as well....believe it was about $5.50..passed on the chips and soda and definitely didn't need it! Will absolutely be back soon! read more

I spent a lot of time as a kid hitting up the Suburpia that used to exist in Cudahy back in the 1980s. It was good to get back and try the new "original" Suburpia. I ordered the Miles Standish which was an old favorite. If you are expecting exactly what they were serving in the 1970s or 1980s this is not what I got, but it was very good. There is something that is not quite like the original special oil and spice mix. There is also a whole whacky story about the founder and the secret spice mix. Whatever that is, what I ate was an amazing sub on the oversized bread I remembered well in the plastic bag where you could eat it down as you went and keep the oil off your shirt. Happy to see a rebooted version of the classic back on the scene. read more

I was in the mood for a sandwich but something different and I remembered this Milwaukees classic place so I decided to give them another try. My first visit i didn't get the full experience because there was a nasty court thing and the secret spice mix was not handed over to some partners and a judges order finally made that happen if I remember correctly. The place is on Layton across from the airport so I drove over I saw a gas station next to a big open field so I kept driving thinking Yelp was wrong but I still couldn't find it so I googled driving directions and my phone took me to the gas station again. Dam it's in the corner of the gas station and super easy to miss. I had the classic which is bologna, salami and cheese basically. If you have never been here prepare your self for eating the sandwich directly from the plastic bag because it's very messy, there is a chart on the wall for the newbies. There was a sign stating double the meat for a $1, well that's a no brainer, yes please. The tasty sandwiches are different from anything around and once you have one you will understand, it's the magic fairy dust they use and the sesame hoagie style bun. When your sandwich is ready it comes through a door in the wall which is a little weird but both stores that I have been to are like this. My sandwich was salami, bologna, mild yellow cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mayo and spiced oil. The fresh sesame Italian bread is the best part for me and everything just works well. This definitely hit the spot for a different sandwich that I was looking for so if you never have been to one please give them a try for a sandwich that you are not going to get anywhere else. read more

This place has the best, most classic throwback subs around. I have been getting these subs since the 70s when there were locations all over Milwaukee. My location was next to White Hen Pantry in Fox Point. The blend of spices, shredded lettuce, oil and vinegar really makes them superior to the competitors. Some sub shops invest a lot of money in decor and design, but the subs are so-so. Suburpia may not have the fanciest, most up to date digs, but their subs are PHENOMENAL! I'm very glad that they have made a comeback after being absent from the Milwaukee area food scene for many years. What makes Suburpia subs stand out from the rest is the copious amounts of seasoning and oil that are on every sandwich. So. Much. Flavor. When the sandwich is literally dripping oil into its plastic bag, I know it going to be fantastic. They are also generous with the amount of meat that they use. My go-to sandwiches are the Classic Suburpia (salami and bologna) and the White House (double ham and turkey), minus the lettuce and tomato. Typing this review has made me hungry. First started eating Suburpia with my then girlfriend, now wife back in 2009. Super happy when this location opened. A lot closer to home & work than the location on Bluemound. Reading some comments below. A lot of outsiders don't seem to get-it. It's a bit of a wet sandwich. You eat it in the bag, they have instructions on the wall. They are only open till 9 not 10. My least favorite location . The workers were super crabby , rude and forgot meat on two out of four of my subs . I understand their policy is to remake it but one doesn't usually pull apart their sub before they get home to make sure it was made correctly . Your going to count on the fact the worker knows how to do their job and make it correctly the first time around . My job as a customer isn't to double check their work ; I'm not their manager. I live an hour away so I didn't have time to come back so they could "fix" their mistake . It's a sub ... who forgets the meat ... it's sort of the whole point . Love the chain ,and love the sub flavors ( when they remember my meat ) just don't suggest this location ! Their " own sauce " is a favorite ! I like the onions they use ....they are the small chopped white ones . This location seems to use a little bit to much soy sauce ... Or ingredients that taste like soy sauce .... it had nothing to do with being to hot . They are located in a gas station ! Good for picking up extra snacks to go with your sub . These are NOT like other sub sandwiches. The whole POINT of these is the way the dressing coats everything and ties the flavors together. The oil, bit of vinegar and a bit of spices / herbs and some ONIONS. This soaks into the bread and into everything, which is why you must use the plastic bag to eat these. If you complain "Ewww the bread was oily," then clearly YOU DON'T GET IT. That's like saying of an Italian beef "Ewww the thing is wet with gravy." The chopped onions marinating in the sauce give these a special flavor that is not found in other sandwiches. My fave was the ham sub, the Miles Standish. The salty ham, the onion-infused dressing made them unique. SUBURPIA SUBS HAVE A SPECIAL FLAVOR NOT FOUND IN ANY OTHER FAST FOOD ITEMS, and are unique unto themselves. If you want an "Italian-style" sub on crunchy bread with fancy meats and just a little dressing, there are many, many other places that serve these. BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE SUBURPIA! Now everyone has their favorite sub shop. Every sub shop has their claim to fame. But Suburpia has returned from the ashes as a true contender for Milwaukee's best sub shop. Some of the older crowd remembers Suburpia from the early 80's. Then like that they disappeared for many years. Then came back several years ago with that taste you remember from your youth. My favorite sub is the White House. What's not better than ham and turkey on seeded bread with cheese, lettuce, and their special seasoning. This is definitely a no thrills sub shop. Probably the best sub I've ever had, this, except for when the original founder, Will Foley, ran the business. I believe Will still has the original trade secret spice recipes, but hat's off to the current Suburpia for coming pretty damn close to the original recipes, and for keeping the doors open. Davey Jones (tuna) Gold coast (ham) and Miles Standish (turkey) have been my favorites (in that order) since the late 1970's. I wanted to try a new place with my mom and niece on my way home from work. The initial exchange was fairly simple, and the girl at the counter seemed ok, but the issue started with how it was made. We were very clear that she wanted 'the White House sub' with ham and Turkey, no seasonings or oils, very plain with nothing on it but cucumber- NOTHING. When my family got home to eat our meals, we opened up my nieces sub to discover it had EVERYTHING on it. Including so much extra oils it was pouring when we pulled it out of the bag. She was disgusted and couldn't eat it, and we had to scramble to provide her something to eat. We called Suburpia, same counter girl answered, rather nice and said 'just come in tomorrow and we'll make you a new one the way you want it'. We didn't live in the direct area, but in order to have the mistake corrected and get what we paid for, we made a second trip down there the next day. That's where things seemed to dramatically escalate. This time there was someone else behind the counter, a young man with a deeply tanned complexion. When we nicely explained the issue and why we had come back down there, his behavior was instantly quite aggressive and confrontational. I don't know if he was the owner or the original sandwich maker or what, but the way he acted it was like we were robbing him and the sub was coming out of his own pocket. We had the receipt with us, but he kept repeating pretty loudly in front everyone there, including other customers, that we were also supposed to bring the sub back to prove they made it wrong (while we'd already said the girl on the phone did not tell us this and said it'd be fine). It was awhile before he got to asking how we'd wanted done it the first place. Again, we emphasized NOTHING but the ham and Turkey that came on it, and cucumber. We repeated it a couple times, with a lot of 'no this, no this, no this', to make it even more clear because of the previous confusion. Yet from the back we still heard 'do they want x, y, z' a few times. We also paid extra for the cucumber despite thier long list of included toppings that we all had left off, and it was barely a handful of paper-thin slices so my niece couldn't even taste it. And the subs aren't even good to warrant the effort of going there in the first place, with or without the attitude. The whole experience was so shocking, embarrassing, and terrible none of us will ever go back again- and I now recommend to anyone I know and anyone reading this they stay away as well!! read more

Gee Suburpia! I remember those as a kid. I loved the Miles Standish. I was wondering if they were as good as I remember, so I decided to stop in and try one. Just as I was getting to the front door, an employee locks it. I pull on the handle to be sure, and yep, locked. How odd, its the middle of the afternoon. I check their hours on the door. Open till 3. Gee, my watch reads 2:55, and yes, I know it is accurate. Bad enough some employees want to skip out early, but to lock the door from a potential new old-customer as he was about to enter? I guess it is NOT the Suburpia I remember. It's a strange location. Very small. I wondered if it's a goofy prank because it's laid out weird. They prepare all of the food (and I'm assuming office work) behind a wall that you have no idea what's going on back there. Seating is very limited. The one employee working treated us fine, nothing impressive or to complain about. The food was very good. I ordered the Camp David and would definitely get it again! The original oil and seasoning is what sets this sub apart from any other. It's about 6" and filled me up! It's very thick. Overall, I'd go back! I do really enjoy Suburpia. I get the Davey Jones (Tuna), and husband gets the Miles Standish (Turkey). I used to live on the Miles Standish when I was a teenager (18+) all the way til they went out of business. When they came back, wasn't eating meat/poultry--so started buying the tuna. I have to say in all honesty (reason why 4 out of 5 stars), this really is not exactly the flavor I remember and loved to death. It still has the same concept, oil, spices, chopped up onion, lettuce, tomatoes & cheese, just not the same "die-for" flavor....no matter what they say. We still buy them regularly (a few times a month) cuz they are very tasty. I like eating them out of the bag---twisting the bag up until it is right under the sandwich. That way I don't lose any of the good stuff to the bottom of the bag. Hubby eats it without the bag over a plate....much messier. read more

I was not impressed by this place at all. After searching and talking to locals I was recommended to this establishment and a great place for a sandwich. Boy they were wrong. I received a soggy sandwich in a bag that was swimming in oils and totally unappealing. I wish I had time to return the sandwich but I had to head to the airport for a flight out of town. Maybe you had gold coast on the brain and that's why it didn't taste like Suburpia? Any how it is very good. I like it on plain bread. I am just a hater of sesame seeds sorry. The names are funny and food is tasty. A bit expensive for a sub but I still like it. Only has 2 tall bars along the windows for seating not sure, but I think it's 8-10 bar stools. Not good for larger family or little kids. I know when my family comes in not alot of seats are left. read more
