I'm part of a Milwaukee Foodie Facebook group where I constantly saw recommendations for Suburpia. I love a good roast beef sandwich but I just can't stand places like cousins. So after much anticipation I decided to go ahead and give it a try. It definitely lived up to the hype! When I got there, only the roast beef had a post-it that read "$1 off" and "no spiced oil." I was very confused by this lack of oil. I think the cashier lady was getting frustrated with me because I was under the impression that their special sauce went on all of the subs. But she stated that each sub had its OWN special spiced oil. Hence the $1 off because there wasn't a special oil to pair with it. I opted for the roast beef anyway and deducted a star from my yelp review since I didn't get to try this famous sauce. But then, lo and behold, there was a soda cooler with many different options for drinks. And in it, sat the utmost delicious red beverage I've ever tasted; a Code Red Mountain Dew. I NEVER find these at any fast food/to-go places and it's my favorite soda ever. Alas, I added a star for this feature. I hope the next time I return, they still have code red! But listen, the roast beef sandwich was absolutely delicious and hit the spot. They made it quite fast too (faster than JJs "freaky fast"). It's quite the drive for me just for a sandwich, but I will be back to try the sauce pairing!

How to eat a sub there

My sister just moved to Milwaukee and we swung by to grab everyone lunch while moving. Everyone was blown away by how incredible the sandwiches were! The bread, meat, and toppings are high quality and the sauce for each sandwich knocks them out of the park. The food is so delicious and well priced and the service is quick. Can't recommend enough!

Wow not at all what I expected, but crazy delicious. I'm so sad that I waited this long to try Suburpia! I've been driving past it for months and been meaning to stop. So as far as the people who say its too oily....these are the people that don't really "get it" Suburpia has all your standard sub sandwich variations, turkey, roast beef, salami..whatever, but what makes it different is this oil-based dressing they pour over it. This dressing has a phenomenal seasoning to it AND they put the sandwich on super hardy, thick french bread which prevents it from becoming a big soggy mess. The bread is just thick enough to soak up a good portion of the oil and seasoning... There literally is a sign posted to the left of the counter that shows you how to unwrap the sub AS YOU EAT it. No, don't try and take it out of the bag and hold it with your hands...you wouldn't eat a dipped Italian beef with your hands and complain your fingers were dirty, this is a similar situation. Don't think this place is very well known due to the location. I mentioned at work this morning I had one of the best subs of my life at Suburpia and literally heads swiveled and people asked me WHERE there was still an original location open. Nobody seemed to know they are right across the street from the airport connected to gas station on the corner! Thought it was a great value as well....believe it was about $5.50..passed on the chips and soda and definitely didn't need it! Will absolutely be back soon!

That's it, it's in the gas station.

It was fun looking around and now I got some oysters at the Saint Paul Fish Company. The place was really chill because it was on a weekday when I visited, so I'm guessing that it's super crowded on the weekends. A definite must visit if you are visiting from out of town.

We have been to a lot of markets: Cleveland, Detroit, Charleston, Cincinnati, we lived a few blocks away from Reading in Philly for two years. But best market in the US? That's a different league. Ironically it is literally the smallest market of them all. It's almost comforting because there aren't that many things to choose from. But, disappointing at the same time. There was a lovely souvenir spot. Very small but it has some cute shit. I got a shirt. GF got a sweatshirt. We then got coffee. There was a long line. That felt like a good sign. I got the nutty pedestrian which was good. GF got a frosty something. As a whore for anything mint flavored, I was expecting this to knock it out of the park but it wasn't as minty or as sweet as I would have preferred. Next, we went for the candy place and bakery. I was disappointed to not see one Kringle in this place. Oh well. The gigantic cookies would have to suffice. We got regular chocolate chip, oatmeal chocolate chip, and a Wisconsin something or other. The Wisconsin something or other had like walnuts, craisins, and chocolate chips. Delicious. The standard chocolate chip was fantastic as well. The candy was really good too. Finally, we topped everything off with empanadas which were spectacular. I reviewed that separately. Surprisingly small but a lot of value squeezed into the square footage.

Most of those spots only open for dinner, so I was thrilled to find that Bavette La Boucherie now serves lunch. My friend, a local, told me the restaurant originally began as a butcher shop. While that's no longer the case, the space still pays tribute to its roots -- shelves lined with kitchen knick-knacks, butcher-block counters, and a display of local provisions that hint at its past. Chef-owner Karen Bell leads the way here, and you can feel her touch throughout -- from the creative menu to the casual-elegant vibe. The décor blends exposed brick and warm wood with soft light and a friendly hum from the open kitchen. Our server, Matthew R., had only been with Bavette a couple of weeks, but his background in restaurant management showed. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and offered great suggestions. Before our sandwiches arrived, we shared a cup of pork and tomatillo pozole topped with cabbage slaw and a dollop of sour cream. It was piping hot, bright, and deeply flavorful -- the kind of starter that makes you stop talking for a minute just to enjoy the next spoonful. Having read rave reviews of the Korean steak au jus, I nearly ordered it, but Matthew suggested the roast-beef with cheddar since I'm not a big lunch eater. Excellent call. The sandwich was divine -- tender, flavorful beef layered with melted cheddar on a crisp, perfectly toasted roll. The beef-fat fries had great depth of flavor, though I'd love them even more if they were twice-cooked for that extra crunch. Being more of a gin or vodka drinker, I couldn't resist the Gin Old Fashioned on the cocktail list. It was delicious -- smooth, aromatic, and balanced enough that I happily ordered a second. Great food, warm service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Bavette La Boucherie is a gem I can't wait to revisit.
