We really like this place. It's a great place to catch all of your sporting events with several TVs. For example during NFL football season he has all of the TVs on different games. It makes it really nice when your spouse or friend would rather watch their team. They also open at 10 AM on Sundays so you can watch NFL. They do a lot of different events, including karaoke and open mic night. Also, the service is always excellent and the feeling you get when going there is always warm and welcoming. The otters den is definitely "the locals watering hole". It's not a dive bar; it's nicer. It's not a high-end mixology spot either; it's somewhere in between. The drinks are well made and pretty balanced (on the lighter side with the booze) which I prefer because it keeps the people who typically over-indulge out of the scene. My only gripe is that it gets very busy here and orders are taken randomly at the bar. This means that "regulars" may skip the line and people are served out of order. Perhaps this isn't an issue on slower days but this place was packed wall-to-wall on karaoke night when I visited and it remained at full capacity throughout my visit. Don't expect to find a table to sit at and - if you find one - don't expect to keep it. This is an okay place to come for a pint and one or two cocktails if you want to people watch but it's not the best spot to slowly enjoy a finely crafted cocktail. I'd come back to catch the game with friends but may look elsewhere for something more cultivated when I'm looking for something more craft. Drink recommendation; skip the mango margarita (too sweet) and go for a gin and tonic made with the empress gin. Pretty to look at and goes down smooth. read more

The Otters Den is a dive bar that offers a wide variety of beers and cocktails. There are pool tables, darts, and karaoke for entertainment. Upon entering, they have a person scanning ID cards to verify they are valid. The location itself is on the smaller side and it was quite difficult to walk around without bumping into others. Although bars are not really my thing, I had a good time and would recommend others to visit. As for drinks, my husband ordered the empress gin and tonic and I ordered the mango chili margarita. This guy order a drink and she refused to make him a drink, she started raising her voice and complaining about a $10 tip this guy had left him prior. The worst part about this situation was that she started to cuss this gentlemen out making sure the whole bar was aware of the situation. This gentlemen kept his cool but was definitely shocked that this bartender was demanding him to tip her a certain amount. It's taken me a few days to gather my thoughts for this review. I want my words to be fair and accurate as to what my friend and I experienced at this bar -- this is not a passionate or angry review by any means. I'm just disappointed and want to share how I feel. My friend, who's a lightweight, had a few too many drinks the other night. She ended up resting her head on the table and I could tell the time was soon to leave. But I wanted to give her some time where she could walk without my help. I noticed the bartenders were looking at us, and both eventually approached our table. I was prepared to defend my relationship to her as her friend and that she was safe with me. But they weren't there to check on her.. Instead, they informed her to keep her head up and be alert; repeating that they can't have people sleeping in the bar and they would have to ask her to leave if it continued. I'm well aware that local ordinance laws need to be followed. I understand that keeping a bar open is a delicate process and a strike at the wrong time can threaten the business. That's completely fine and I don't resent this. But this cold, clinical encounter was void of any humanity or empathy. What if she was a girl who potentially needed help? What if she had been drugged and needed to be protected until a ride arrived? There was zero care taken to ensure that this individual, potentially having a bad drug experience or worse, was kept safe and secure. Instead, they threatened to throw her out in the dark, with me, a guy with which they made zero attempts to ensure she was safe. I do not recommend coming to this bar with a date that you do not know. This could have been a devastating situation for her if I had malicious intent. We will not be returning to this bar, which is a shame because the bartender was patient and attentive when ordering and serving drinks. Still, I regret tipping as highly as I did. read more

Soo I gave it two stars because well my first time I had a great time & well this time not so much. So we came to watch the game and obviously get some drinks right? It's a bar. Walk in looking for spots there's none available, cool perfectly understandable. We're greeted by a older woman with darker her and she ID's us again no issues With this at all. Still looking for places to sit a kind patron suggests that we get the two empty barstools in the corner. We move them closer toward the bar.... about two minutes after sitting down the same woman approaches me and my friend and ask us if we're going to buy something because her paying customers need places to sit. AGAIN WE HAD SAT DOWN FOR TWO SECONDS DIDN'T EVEN GIVE HS THE OPPORTUNITY TO DECIDE WHAT TO DRINK. I asked the woman if she was serious as we had been inside the establishment for just about five minutes. She repeated her statement and I decided to take my money elsewhere. Horrible horrible customer service. But hey went down the street to the General Historic Bar, sat down.... HAD A CHANCE TO THINK ABOUT WHAT I WANTED and then ordered? Stopped here on a Sunday afternoon on my way from Monterey to Santa Cruz. It was a little hard to see it when you enter the parking lot cuz it's in a little strip mall but once I found it, the space was large and open with large windows, pool table and large TVs. Owner and bartender David was welcoming and friendly. I notice a reddish purple drink in a plastic water container behind the bar. David told me it was a punch made w vodka lemon juice and blueberry puree. It was great! Not too sweet, not too tart and not too boozy! David was very friendly to everybody there. I have lived in Marina for over seven years and only recently decided to start visiting this bar. As some of you may know there was a fire several years ago and the place was completely rebuilt and is immaculate. I consider myself to be a beer aficionado so it's nice to frequent a place that has the taps changing out on a regular basis. They offer free pool on Mondays and happy hour all day long on Sunday. Before this place sustained severe fire damage, the Otter's Den was a bit of a dive bar. It was one of those places you would never set foot in. The clientele was also much different. Marina's rednecks, fake ass gangsters and drunk old women is what you would typically see. Fortunately, it has all changed for the better. I find the Otter's Den to be a pretty fun place to get a drink and hang out with your friends. The ambiance is a bit mellow, you can enjoy a drink without being bothered by other patrons, everyone seems to be on their own wavelength which is most definitely a welcome change. Jim, one of the bartenders here, is a magnanimous soul indeed. Without hesitation, he mixes up uncommon drinks that my fiancee and I request and doesnt bitch about it one bit like most other bartenders in the area would. I really liked the fact that if Jim doesn't know how to mix a particular drink, that he will "learn it after making it three times" as he so eloquently puts it. Bartenders more often than not, have a limited repertoire and aren't willing to mix drinks that they aren't familiar with. Jim is always more than eager to mix what we want and that went a long way with me. A stark contrast when you compare my experiences here with those who have said the bartenders, most notably Trinidad are rude. All of my experiences have been quite the opposite and now I am curious as to how all of the others who have complained about the bartenders were acting. This place deserves five stars, however, I only gave them four because their selection was "somewhat" lacking (don't worry, they have all of the basics down pat). read more

I went to The Otters Den last weekend, and it was a decent enough time. It was pouring rain outside, so I will blame the emptiness on that. My friend and I walked in for a drink and there were 5 other customers - 3 at the bar watching UFC and 2 shooting pool. The bartender was nice enough. He poured me a beer that I never officially ordered, but said to my friend that I might have. She ordered a vodka drink and was pleased with it. The attention of the bartender after we got our drinks was almost non-existent. He sat on the far end of the bar, checked his phone, or watched UFC. I had my card out for a good 10 minutes, with my purse on the bar, and it wasn't until I began rotating it in my hand that he brought the bill. Even then, I can't comment on the prices of the drinks because I never got an itemized receipt. Nit-picking? Maybe, but when there are 6 people in the bar (including you and your 2 friends) you'd think the service would be a bit better. The decor is nice, so I hope it's better on a busier evening. read more
