The vibes are here but it all stops there…read more.. Let me start by saying that I love this place. Just needs a bit of cleaning up on their transparency. The 'keep it open' policy is something I appreciate but would also appreciate an itemized receipt when you close out. Here's why to keep your eye out when drinking at this establishment. 1- when you close out, it's helpful to verify what you consumed to ensure you're corrected charged. My receipt was the merchant copy and the customer copy. Itemized? Really had to ask for it. 2- the merchant copy - it asked for a tip and the total amount. When we closed out our beer and well drink, it was ~$28. Weird, right? So my thought was that they clearly charged something incorrect. 3- when there's something automatically charged, it had better be communicated to me upfront. The gratuity was automatically added and IT WAS 20%! No sign, no way to notify me that it was already added. It didn't even say so on the merchant or customer copy. On top of that, the copy asked for AN ADDITIONAL TIP. For something like that, I had better get great service. 4- The service here is spotty at best. There's usually one bartender for the often busy bar. Not a problem, usually. But with that high of a price, better serve your customers well and have a fully stocked bar. 5 - the options were lacking. Two things you'd think would be stocked but weren't - espresso (come on, even Kahlua) and apple liqueur for an espresso martini and appletini were too much to ask for, I guess. Overall, a disappointment. Good thing they have the vibes nearly right. But awful business practices.

What a great spot for live music!…read more It's comfortable and spacious and has a lot of people-watching potential, which can be a downside because there are a lot of passersby, including screaming kids. But it's an intimate venue that also actually has a lot of space. High top tables near the bar, for a chic city feel and then a couple of sofas near the music. I always try to grab a seat by the stairs, and they staff accomodates me if I need them to help me snag it (because in a wheelchair I can't sit at the high tables and the sofa area is often full). That's great service for you. I came in late Dec. for a favorite local act (check out Mark Banks if you have the chance, soulful yet modern). The bartender told me they don't have coffee and that I'd have to go downstairs. I looked as disappointed as I could, and he offered to go down for me. I left him a big tip for doing that but when I returned a few weeks later for the NYE live music, I went downstairs to grab my own coffee this time. I asked them if I could take it upstairs to the music and they said they serve coffee up there now, they have an espresso machine. I wonder how that transpired. If it's from the employee suggesting improvements, that's amazing. I had a dessert the first time and a cheeseplate the second time. The cheeseplate is a great value. Good service, cozy atmosphere, live local talent = new fave spot. Btw, they have some of the same menu items as Schooners, like the Angry Prawns, etc. So non-drinkers have options here.

The inside is very cozy feeling, with the entire wall behind the bar being basically a library of whiskey. My first visit, I had a flight of Redwood Empire bourbon & rye. It was god, RE makes great stuff. For my second visit, I had their Islay Trio flight, wanting to try something different. Best one was by far the Lagavulin 16 year (glass on the right), as it has a rich peaty flavor to it. They even allowed my dog to sit inside with me, although we were limited to the counters at the front of the lounge. Nonetheless, the staff were very accommodating to my pup and I, even bringing him water. This is a fantastic place to visit if you're a whiskey connoisseur, or just want a good cocktail. Cheers!

Anyway, always a mystery visit when I'm in town.

I sounded surprised because we never had a chance seeing them open. They open at 2p and we usually leave before that time. My husband loves wine so he had to go in and check it out. Most of the time, wine cellar stores like this don't carry decent selections. But Stave's selections blew my husband's mind. He said majority of their selections are decent and priced reasonably, which it's rare to see nowadays. So we decided to stay and open a bottle of wine that interested him. We also ordered their cheeseboard, which they said we can get more breads if we want. My toddler was a fan of their cheese and bread, she finished most of them. Steven was the gentleman who served us. He was friendly, attentive and patient. After I checked in on Yelp, there was this 10% promotion popped up. I showed it to one of the staffs, and she said they have new promotion of 15% off now - even better! Of course my husband had to get some. We ended up getting additional 6 bottles with the 15% off promotion. Loved our experience there. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the service, the selections. Nothing we can complain. Amazing experience and highly recommended for all wine lovers.

The Belgian waffle is a must- it's decadent, the berries are fresh and the whipped cream is cloud-like and sweet. The American breakfast was hearty and filling. The bacon was perfectly chewy, salty and cooked. The Yukon potatoes were crispy and had a good level of spice. The eggs were super fluffy as well. The sourdough was warm and the butter was creamy. Our server was extremely kind and was ON IT when it came to refills and making good conversation, super kind and made sure to check on us consistently.

Let's start with the wins: the service was genuinely excellent -- attentive, warm, professional. The Old Fashioned was well-crafted, and major props to the bar program for stocking Nochino. That's a detail that signals someone behind the bar actually cares. The food, though? It missed. The fish was overcooked and the presentation felt like an afterthought. For a restaurant at this price point and in this setting, I expected more -- both on the plate and on the plate. You can forgive a lot in a restaurant when everything else sings. But the food is the whole point, and this one didn't deliver. Worth a drink at the bar. Skip dinner and eat somewhere else in Monterey.

Yet the ambiance, service, and food are very good! I love the various aspects of the decor, as well. Other than parking challenges on a busy night in the downtown, we were lucky to get a table for 5 relatively quickly, as this place isn't that large, with some additional bar seating, and it seems very popular. 5:30 was a great time, as we watched the waiting line grow longer after we were seated. Our server, Michael J., did a great job of greeting us, providing menus, and taking initial drink orders while we decided what to try. We decided to try BBQ honey wings, fried artichoke hearts, and onion rings for appetizers. The main courses were two orders of kids' cheese pizza and tater tots, a small dinner salad, a cup of New England-style clam chowder, and a NY Steak sandwich. The food came in a reasonable time, with appetizers and salad first, then the rest. The apps were good, but the onion rings were a bit greasy. The honey wings were well-liked, as well as the artichoke hearts, which, strangely, were not oily like the onion rings. Yummy! The cheese pizzas paired with tater tots were certainly different, but the pizza was more like a reheated frozen pizza. The tots were okay. The NY Steak sandwich was good as well, with a side of steak fries - obviously! Overall, we enjoyed the meal and would definitely consider dining here in the future when in town.

We checked in a few minutes early and were told that we would need to wait a little longer for a table with a view. The host that checked us in was very kind and friendly, although I didn't catch her name. The restaurant was surprisingly not super busy for a Friday night although several tables were occupied. It wasn't our first time dining at this restaurant. Service was friendly, but a bit slow. I'm not sure if they were understaffed, but I expected our server to check in more frequently and it took a while to get our check. The dinner menu has several options for entrees and appetizers. We opted to share a crunchy coconut shrimp dish and order separate entrees (salmon & chicken). We also ordered a side of sizzling mushrooms and a hot chocolate lava cake. The coconut shrimp dish was alright, I liked the dipping sauces that were included. But the quantity of shrimp was lackluster and the coconut breading was crispier than expected. The sous vide roasted chicken was good, and the portions were reasonable. I liked the mashed potatoes and the chicken was cooked well, a bit bland but the gravy/sauce helped. They also included 2 pieces of asparagus, which was okay, but one piece was mostly burnt and I was not a fan. The salmon was tasty although the fillet had some tiny bones which needed to be removed. Both dishes lacked a bit of salt and pepper. The sizzling mushrooms were tasty although I thought the portion was too small for $10. We finished our meal with a hot chocolate lava cake which was warm and comforting. The vanilla ice cream and pieces of heath bar crunch were good. It was a bit too sweet, so we couldn't finish it, but enjoyed the dessert for the most part. Our dinner was under $150 after tax and tip, but a bit pricier than expected. It may make sense to order the $61 set meal which includes a starter (soup or salad), an entree, and a mini lava cake. Overall, a mostly good dining experience and the ocean views make the experience worthwhile.

He recommended it and said it was one of their popular appetizers. Unfortunately, it ended up being one of the worst calamari dishes I've ever had. The plate was filled with fried batter crumbs, soggy strips of vegetables, and a few fried carrot pieces, with very little actual calamari. What calamari was there was extremely chewy--so much so that my daughter actually choked on a piece. It also wasn't properly coated. It looked like everything had simply been dumped into one large bowl of batter, causing all the pieces to stick together before being thrown into the fryer. I've worked in the seafood industry for over 20 years, and this was honestly some of the worst calamari I've ever been served. The prime rib sandwich was equally disappointing. It resembled thin-sliced deli roast beef rather than freshly carved prime rib. The bread tasted stale even after being toasted, the onions were burnt, and the fries were golden brown but soggy, almost as if they had been refried. The fish tacos were another letdown. My wife only managed to eat one. The fish appeared to be a low-quality, sustainable white fish that looked and tasted like tilapia. For a restaurant sitting on the Pacific Ocean, I expected fresh local seafood--not something that tasted frozen and generic. The seasoning was little more than paprika and coarse black pepper, while the salsa consisted of chopped tomatoes and onions with almost no flavor. The cabbage garnish also tasted old and wilted. The avocado toast initially looked promising, but even that was disappointing because the thin multigrain bread tasted stale before it was toasted. What surprised me just as much as the food was the service. Throughout our meal, no one stopped by to ask how everything was or whether we were enjoying our food. I understand restaurants can be short-staffed, and our waiter was also tending the bar, but checking on guests is a basic part of dining service. When he finally returned, it wasn't to ask about our meal--it was to hand us the bill and tell us about the rewards program. I then had to track him down at the bar just to pay. The building itself is beautiful, and the waterfront location is hard to beat. Unfortunately, the food simply doesn't match the setting. From the seafood to the meat, nearly everything we ordered was below expectations. In my opinion, this restaurant survives largely because of its location and the steady stream of tourists. There are much better places to eat in Monterey. I left extremely disappointed and will be sharing my experience on other review platforms as well.
