The outpost is adorable, scenic and peaceful, it's situated near the West Newton bridge along the Yough river. This outdoor eatery is an arm of the Waypoint Youth and Community Center giving children experience in operating a small business. Went there several times a year or two ago and it was a 5+. Last couple times in 2025, it's drifted southward. I'm all about helping these young people but I have not seen supervision lately. Burgers were good but not great - no crispy edge, and so thin they fell apart on the first bite along with the bun. The young people lacked basic manners... I didn't want to write this but the last visits really bothered me. Maybe it was a bad day or crew but it wasn't the 5+ I've had before. Wowowowow! After the halfway point of our 28 mile ride, we were hungry and in need of a respite. Just before the West Newton bridge was The Outpost, a food truck evidently known for their smash burgers. Next door was the brewery truck, alas not yet open. With a 14 mile trip back, beer may not have been the best idea anyway. We split a monster burger and a side order of fries. Wow! Crispy patties, melted American cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, oh and bacon. Perfect for sharing. Mike always evaluates burgers on the grilled bun and this quickly rose to first place on his list. The pleasant surprise though was the amazingly friendly young men running the business. They were so polite and worked together as a team, constantly encouraging each other. Turns out that The Outpost is a project of Waypoint Youth and Community Center! A great burger for a great cause. We can't wait to return. read more

A truly proper Smash-Burger! I had the Classic. Get it with the poutine. Both were excellent!!

Had to give this place a try after my son raved over it so many times. I was not disappointed! The original smash burger was awesome! I also had the poutine fries. Had mushrooms on top also. So good! The service was great but it was a Friday evening and our wait was a bit long. But it was pleasant as they had live music there outside while we waited. Such a wonderful outdoor eatery. The service is top notch and the food is delicious. It's right alongside the bike trail going through west newton, it was such a breath of fresh air to stop and enjoy a snowy (snow cone) and a juicy smash burger with a fiery twist. Beer, bikes, burgers and dogs! I've been riding the trial for 20 years and desperately needed this place. The food is excellent! The service is kind and quick. Even better I learnt this a non profit that helps the youth and folks in town. Very nice atmosphere with riverside outdoor seating. Their Smash Burgers are really special and come in many popular varieties. Fries were better than average, hot and perfectly salted. The the Hot Dogs, in various varieties were done well too. The Chile cheese killed the hunger of a day on the river and trial. We did not try them, but the slushies/ iceys seemed popular. As if that was not enough the Blooms brewery has beer there! After all these years of cycling I'm glad to have this place. These folks have made phenomenal beautiful use of that land. Stop here. Fellow yelpers I would seek this place and this is the first time I've ever said that. This is literally worth a one hour drive. When you get to this place you will understand what I'm talking about. As a PIT to DC in 2 or 3 days by bike DC folks stop here.l it is well placed. Also there's a campground literally within a quarter of a mile should you wish to take longer and enjoy the town. read more

This is almost a food truck. It's located off the GAP trail. We ordered burgers snd fries. Our burger was absolutely outstanding!!! I got a single and wished I ordered a double, they aren't huge. There is outdoor seating that overlooks the river and it's a really fun place to stop after the trail. read more

One of the best hamburgers I've had. nice setting. Appears some (all?) proceeds go to a kid's outreach program. Couple this with the Bloom Brew Brewery next door and you've got an unbeatable combination. We're biking the Great Allegheny Passage. read more

Disappointing! There #1 smash burger should be called the "inflation burger" this is the trend in 2022, where the great reset and you will own nothing and be happy is coming true. At the outpost "you will almost eat nothing and not be happy, imho. Cheap burger bun a paper thin burger with barely any lettuce tomato and onions, low grade potatoes for french fries. I went up to ask for some more ketchup, while the couple ordering was prodded into french fries with a Free snow cone to all who order burger and fries. I laughed and said we did not get free snow cones with ours. then commented about the burger as she gleefully was like yes "that's a smash burger" It's stupid, Two burgers and fries a can of coke and small water $21. It's what you would expect from the local elks club for $8. Three stars for the view of the river and location. Keep riding another 40 yards to foxes pizza. read more
