The west boat launch Area was easy to unload our JetSki's. There were tables and bathrooms nearby. It was nice to have a table so we could have dinner and enjoy the water. While riding our Jetske's, there was nobody on the water which made it nice. The water was glass which made it fun and allowed us to go really fast on the Jet Skis. I think we got up to 70 miles an hour on the water. Don't tell my wife because she would flip if she found out we (son and I) hit 70 mph on the water. I don't think my Son minded the speed because he was having a blast as he giggled away with excitement. In the end, pretty cool place to enjoy the water. Can't wait to return.

There are burrs, goose poop and spiders everywhere. Tent campers are allowed to reserve FHU RV sites, and many do. There is absolutely NO enforcement of quiet hours. Other campers keep their music loud and the party going all night, every night. They literally never turned it down and were blasting it like they were at the club... 12am, 2am, 4am, 6am... ALL NIGHT. My kids and I couldn't get a good night sleep because of it. This is not a true family campground. It invites all the wrong elements, because they don't enforce the rules. Most of the campsites had WAY more than 6 people per site, which is another campground rule that definitely wasn't enforced. This is not relaxing camping. It's just non-stop loud music and partying. I would NEVER recommend this campground to people I actually like, and will never be returning.

It's one of the largest reservoirs in California and a short drive away from Angels Camp and Sonora. There's an $8 parking fee that's payable at a machine near the entrance (Ranger booth was unstaffed.) There's a few different entrances and recreation areas to the park and on my visit, I went to hike Angels Creek trail at the Glory Hole Recreation area entrance. While parking areas are signed, trails are not. Prepare before you go by researching routes and and getting a screen shot of the park map. I parked at the Buck Brush trailhead and picked up the Angels Creek trail loop from there. There was no trail sign or directional signs along the route but fortunately it was a simple loop trail and a friendly fellow hiker pointed me in the right starting point. Spring is the time of year to go! Lots of lush green hills, poppies and lupines along with cooler weather made this a pleasant, short hike. Nice views of the lake as well. Very few hikers but it was the day after a rainy spell and these trails are popular with mountain bikers, so I imagine they were waiting for things to dry out more. I'd come back and check out some other lakeside trails. None seem long or challenging so this is a more leisurely park. You can make a day trip out of it by heading over to Sonora for lunch.

There are tons of trails, picnic areas, camping areas, and shore fishing spots with moderately easy access. Multiple entrances to opposing sides of the reservoir with boat launches on both sides provided options to switch it up mid day. (Your parking pass gets you in on both ends) We also seen a plethora of deer lounging in the grasses and under the trees as we drove through. (Be mindful of the wildlife) Whether you're a boater (or renting one) a fisherman, hiker or just want to hang out by the lake- it's worth visiting atleast once!

Of course we got there way early because the instructions said arrive an hour before your appointment time. Good little soldiers we, arrived at 8:02 for our 9am paddle. By 8;10 they wanted to know if we wanted to get breakfast first or just go. Pffft! Lemme at it. The other good: okay, it's the Sierra Nevada. How can it not be glorious on a lake? Buuuuuut... here comes the bad: waiting, waiting, waiting at the end for someone to notice we came back. I blew my requisite emergency whistle twice in frustration and still nothing. Probably ten minutes of employees not seeing us, or maybe preoccupied with the gasoline powered craft. Which brings me to the next maybe not bad but not great... we were the only people who didn't need to sign the disclosure that we had to pay for our fuel separately. That, in and of itself isn't so bad... but it meant this 3.5 mile lake was choppier than some oceans on which we've kayaked. Constant wake. We had to stay on the shore side of the large orange buoys, and the motorized pontoon boats, sea-doos, jet boats with water skis... they were on the other side. It's like when I was a kid flying 11 hours LAX - LHR in the 1970s and the smoking section's boundary changed based on the ratio of smokers. Yeah, there was segregation but hoo, didn't make a lotta difference. Bouncy, bouncy, bouncy. Still, we're on the lake, it's a beautiful day, what's not to love? The ugly wasn't appalling by any stretch but it wasn't great either, and it's the reason I'd rate this place 3 of 5 stars. It got the job done but I didn't see any evidence that people cared. The kayak was dirty and had trash in/on it - half a paddle padding torn off and river weeds. The paddle was held together with peeling electrical tape, had only one drip ring with no padding (maybe sitting on the prow?) and the paint was chipping off. And the drink holder was half full of slimy river water. Blech. Who wants to risk drinking nasty water running down your bottle? For $250 for two hours, I would expect better.
