Wow wow wow...I have never really been a fan of pancakes, but "The Pancake Bakery" serves up some of the BEST pancakes I've EVER HAD. While you can definitely get super sweet pancakes here, the real star of this Jordaan eatery is the savory pancakes. If you come here with a group of 2 or more people, I highly recommend ordering one of each savory and sweet. We got a Caprice pancake to start and added chorizo (more of a Spanish than a Mexican chorizo). This pancake was phenomenal, and actually felt a bit healthy since it had a ton of veggies on it (although it probably wasn't healthy at all, haha). Our second pancake, a banana and nutella sweet pancake, was also good (very light but also, of course, very sweet). The coffee is fresh and tasty. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated, but for 10:00AM on a Sunday for a group of 5, we thought the wait was very reasonable. The servers are super friendly and quick. When I was researching the best things to see in Amsterdam one thing that kept popping up was the Pancake Bakery (which has been around since 1973). I was thrilled when I learned that they were open late because I am all about breakfast food for dinner. This ended up being the perfect end to a busy day of exploring the city. The Pancake Bakery was very easy to find and just a short walk from the Anne Frank House. It's located along the water and the walk to it was quite interesting. After so much walking throughout the day I should have selected one of their many savory pancakes, but I initially went with a pancake with chocolate sauce. I have to say I was quite impressed with how our waitress looked out for my food allergies. I told her about them before I ordered and when I asked for a pancake with chocolate sauce she ran off. She wanted to confirm that the chocolate sauce had nuts in it and it turned out that it did! I'm so thankful she warned me. I ended up getting a pancake with apples and it was delicious. The Pancake Bakery was also my introduction to poffertjes, which are little bite-sized pieces of heaven made with pancake batter, powdered sugar, and butter. Considering how expensive Amsterdam can be the affordable pricing here was such a pleasant surprise. When I come back to Amsterdam I will definitely eat here again! read more

Overall I had a great experience here. I came here with my parents and sister while we are visiting Amsterdam. We have heard from a lot of people that we must come here and this restaurant did not disappoint. The food was amazing. The pancakes were huge and they have both sweet and savory pancakes. My personal favorite was the Dutch pancake, it is very sweet, but heaven. I also enjoyed the caprese pancake, my sister got it and it tasted like a pizza...it was AMAZING!! Our waitress was very nice and attentive. She made sure all of our food allergies were met and she was very nice and never rushed us. We went at lunchtime, and I went the savory route and had the Pancake with ham, cheese and onions and OMG it was delicious! My wife and daughters all went sweet and got Pancake with chocolate sauce, ice cream and whipped cream - and all loved it! Warning though, if you go the sweet route - its a lot! Despite loving it they filled up and were unable to finish. Afterwards they said they probably could of split one. Bottom line - believe the hype on this place. There's nothing not to like about this place! After navigating our way through the canals, we finally found The Pancake Bakery. I already had this on my list of restaurants to try and boy was I glad we did! As soon as we got in, we were greeted by a dimly-lit ambiance of brick walls and wooden lowered ceiling with hanging lamps on each table. It was packed and pretty loud with excited chattering all over the restaurant. I fell in love with the place right there and then! The vibe and atmosphere was great not to mention how nice and warm it was compared to the freezing temperature outside. A server greeted us as soon as we walked in and got seated right away to the only vacant table. Pure luck! She spoke good English and was very prompt in taking our order and serving them. Dutch pancakes as what the other reviews have already said, are thinner, bigger, crispy on the edges, and more like a crepe. You can choose from their amazing list of sweet and savory options, house specialties, as well as international pancakes. Portions are huge! I ordered the pancake with bacon, cheese, and mushrooms. I don't know what the others are talking about but OMG! That's some GOOD STUFF right there!! I love everything about it, the flavors, texture, the batter, OHLAWD! It just hit home for me! My husband had the Chili international pancake with chili, onions, mushrooms, and cheese. He enjoyed it very much but I found the combination interesting. I wasn't sure at first if I liked it but the taste grew on me. I like that it's a bit spicy and anything sweet and salty, I'm sold! Be sure to use the syrup you'll find in a jar on your table. A touch of it will make all the difference. Aside from the pancakes, they also serve soup, salad, omelettes, and poffertjes (Dutch batter treats that resembles small fluffy pancakes, made with buckwheat flour and yeast). Cruising through Amsterdam and got a chance to sit down at the Pancake Bakery. Two quick checks before we move on. This place isn't the Netherlands version of the IHOP. Definitely not a chain and from I heard it's an original part of Amsterdam. Next thing, the pancakes in The Netherlands differ from what you and I as Americans have to come expect from a pancake. So if your looking for a short stack of fluffy pancakes over here, yeah... you're probably won't be gettin em here. So what does a pancake from the Netherlands look like then? ... well they're still flat and round, just not fluffy. And they're really big or should i say wide. I'll bring a tape measure next time around. The pancakes are a lil greasy looking on the outside, as if they were kinda fried/baked in a frying pan. My toppings were baked into my pancake...on their joint the chunks of banana were backed in with the Nutella on the side. Overall, decent stuff. Nothing spectacular about the flavors or anything that wows your palette. The service was good, out waitress was nice. The decor is really casual and dark almost like a bar. they've got an upstair and downstairs. I would try an snag an upstairs seat next time so you can eat and look out on the street and canal below. I am the mayor if this place (on foursquare), and will likely remain so for the considerable future. I love this place. As expected, the Pancake Bakery is a tourist trap, in a very big way. So much so that you would have to wait in line for like half an hour during the tourist season. They don't take reservations for groups smaller than 5 people, I have been told. The touristy thing reflects in the attitude of their staff as well. Surprisingly courteous and friendly for being an Amsterdam restaurant. That in itself is one of the main reasons I love eating at the Pancake Bakery. Now for food - I am a vegetarian, and as such can only attest to the fact that if you're also one, you will not leave the restaurant feeling bad. The food is great. One advice - don't even bother with the appetizers. I don't see a lot of people ordering them, and as such the couple times I did order one from the menu, it wasn't fresh tasting at all. The omelets are great. There's no good time to try one - feel free to get one for dinner! The kids get their own special menu with a nice toy that they get for free with their meal, making them happy :) I am a HUGE fan of the masai pancake. Yes, I like my Dutch pancakes savory instead of sweet. Nothing beats America's IHOP when it comes to fluffy sweet pancakes :) During the winter months, they often have glühwein on the menu. I didn't spend as much time in Amsterdam as I would've liked to have, but if there was one thing that I really felt was a must while I was there, was to get some Dutch pancakes. This particularly morning was a whirl trying to catch trains and making a scheduled ticketing at the Anne Frank Huis, so needless to say, I was quite ravenous by the time I had just finished being made severely depressed. Thankfully, the Pancake Bakery is barely a block down the street from the Anne Frank Huis, so there's not nearly as much distance to risk getting run over by 4,000 bicyclists to get there. It was promising upon arrival, because it's almost literally a hole in the ground; from the street, you have to walk down some steep steps and duck your head under a door that even someone like me who isn't six feet tall still has to duck into. The interior is kind of rustic and homey-feeling, with a warm atmosphere, but still busy, based on the sheer number of occupied tables. Thankfully, my girlfriend and I clearly missed a brunch rush, because we were able to be seated pretty quickly upon arrival, and watched quite the queue develop minutes after we had arrived. Perhaps everyone else was still in the gargantuan line to get into the Anne Frank Huis. Anyway, service is nice, and as is the case with most of Amsterdam, very good English speakers, so there was never any concerns over communication. I ordered a pancake that came covered in cheese, mushrooms and bacon, and it arrived like it was the size of a small pizza almost. Although it was delicious and I ate every single morsel of food on my plate, I couldn't help but think just how delicious it probably would have been had I gotten a sweet pancake instead of a savory; I guess since I hadn't had any breakfast up until that point, the idea of savory protein seemed like a good idea, but I think the logical conclusion is that I should've channeled my inner fat American and just gotten a sweet pancake as well. The location is very near touristy things, so it is overpriced. However! This is not your mom's pancake. These things are enormous and completely filled with toppings. I got the summer special strawberry pancake with chocolate "sprinkles" (what I personally would call "enormous chocolate shavings") and whipped cream. There was not a lot of free space where I could see the pancake part. As other reviewers have mentioned, this pancake is also thinner and has crispier edges than a pancake that someone from the U.S. might be expecting, so it is appropriate that the category is "creperie." Though my boyfriend called this place "a tourist trap", I found the pancakes to be delicious! Like everyone else in life, we came here after visiting the Anne Frank Huis. The serving size is bigger than your head, so order wisely lol. We ordered two pancakes to share: one sweet (the Brasilian) and and one savory (the apple & bacon). The Brasilian pancake batter included amaretto and almonds, and was topped with caramel sauce and whipped cream. We opted to have the pecan ice cream on the side because I'm lactose intolerant. I personally felt that this pancake was too sugary sweet. The apple & bacon pancake, on the other hand, and was un-kosher perfection and I highly recommend it. Our bilingual waitress was friendly and the service was fast. The bottled water was overpriced and insanely small (33 cl!). I did, however, appreciate the after-dinner coffee candies. I was in Amsterdam for about a 17 hour layover, so I didn't have a lot of meal time (since I arrived there around 5pm and had to leave by 10am). I knew that I had to choose 1 really good place, and I chose The Pancake Bakery! There are a lot of options, but my friend and I decided to split that Indonesian-style crepe/pancake and poffertjes. I wanted classic Dutch food, but also couldn't resist the description of the Indonesian pancake so I definitely got the best of everything. The poffertjes were super fluffy and it was basically heaven (disclaimer: this was my first ever poffertjes so I guess I don't really have anything else to base it off of, but it was amazing). We sat outside by the canal because we wanted to watch our rental bikes (the rental lady warned us that bikes get stolen in Amsterdam a lot, but later we realized that no one probably wanted those bikes). Service was decent, and sitting outside by the canal in Amsterdam could not have been a better environment for pretty much my only meal here. Pro tip: if you want water on tap, you have to order another drink. Other option is just buy a bottle of water, but as it is in Europe, sometimes bottled water is more expensive than beer. read more

Ok. I'm a huge pancake fan. Luckily not literally huge although if I keep eating these monster pancakes and poferjgs (spelling?) I will be. The menu is creative the waitress's are attentive and the pancakes are great. I had the pofferegjs which were 12 silver dollar pancakes that were thick and covered in sugar and butter for a sweet treat. I was so happy to discover these beautiful gluten free pancakes. We were exhausted and had walked a good distance in the rain, so we were thrilled to find this insanely cozy, relaxed, dimly lit little restaurant for a pancake pick me up. If you're not feeling cake-y that's okay, this isn't solely a bakery. Hot soup and a sandwich sounded good but I knew I was ordering a pancake no matter what, and I knew it'd be enormous! I chose the apple and cheese and it made me insanely happy. Like a crepe these pancakes are huge in diameter and quite thin. My gluten free version was more dense than the traditional, but still so delicious. Made with thinly sliced apples, plenty of cinnamon, and a sharp cheese, it was your classic sweet and savory dish, the best. It wasn't too sweet at all. Not sure I could say the same for Jon's had I been able to taste it. He ordered a traditional Dutch style lemon pancake, which is the prettiest shade of yellow and is served well-dusted with powdered sugar. Jon drizzled real molasses on top, which sits in a giant jar on every table. Just a jug of sticky molasses with a wooden spoon so you can adorn your cakes. Our waiter was polite and the food was served quickly, despite a decent sized crowd. The bathrooms are upstairs and naturally the staircase is super steep and old and scary. Tastewise...it was okay and a bit underwhelming. My hubby ordered the GREEK pancake. Way off on taste. Two thumbs down. Fabulous Dutch pancakes for a reasonable price! I enjoyed the French pancake with goat cheese and veggies or the Greek pancake with feta. I also enjoyed the Brazilian sweet pancake too. It has walnut and cinnamon and whipped cream. Delicious! read more
