We tried to come here for pancakes after visiting the Anne Frank House, but I accidentally went the wrong way, and it took us a long time to backtrack our way back here. When we arrived, it was packed with a line out the door. I suppose that's a good thing. A group of people behind us were saying how awesome this place is, so I guess it was worth the wait. I was so excited to try my first Dutch pancakes here, as I guess eating pancakes is the thing to do in Amsterdam. For some reason, I had visions of poofy Dutch baby pancakes in my head... so I was a bit disappointed when the pancakes turned out to be more like French crepes. Nothing wrong with crepes, but when you're expecting one thing and get another... there's bound to be a bit of a letdown. Since we were on vacation, I decided to splurge and treated myself to a hot chocolate with whipped cream and rum, yum! Pretty pricey at 5.25 euros, but quite delicious. I got the Greenlandic Pancake with spinach, melted French cheese, and cashew nuts for 14.35 euros. It was quite tasty, but no clue if it was "authentic" Dutch or not. Probably not. My bf also ordered a savory pancake--but in retrospect, he said we should have ordered one sweet and one savory together so we could try both kinds. We were way too stuffed after devouring our savory pancakes to order another sweet one for dessert, so we just had to feast with our eyes on the ones at the other tables. They looked pretty decadent topped with mountains of whipped cream and drizzled in chocolate sauce. Unfortunately, no Wi-Fi here, so I couldn't check in on Yelp, LOL. Not too far from Anne Frank house, the Pancake Bakery is a must try! My bf and I walked here after our 9am tour at Anne Frank house and waited about 10 minutes before we were seated at a booth. My bf ordered a coffee, a traditional pancake with bacon and I ordered the poffertjes. It was my first time trying poffertjes so I was quite excited. I wasn't disappointed. The poffertjes were small, light, and airy. The powdered sugar was just enough where I felt like the pancakes weren't overwhelmingly sweet. There were enough to the point where I felt satisfied. My bf's pancake was incredibly thin - swedish style, right? - and he enjoyed it. The bacon was crispy and hit the spot :). The coffee comes with one stroopwafel too, so that was nice. We stopped by on a rainy and cold Thursday in March around 11 am and were seated promptly without a reservation needed. It was busy but there were some tables available. The pancakes are basically what are called crepes in America. They are huge. I think very few people finish their entire pancake/crepe alone. 2 pancakes seems like a perfect amount for 3 people to share for a meal. Service was pretty good. An English menu was available. We got the Caprese pancake - very flavorful but all the cheese was concentrated in the center, so the center was the most delicious. It was served lukewarm which seemed kind of weird. We also got the chocolate/banana/whipped cream pancake. Very sweet but the bananas had a bit of freshness that helped balance out the pure sweetness of the chocolate. All around great experience with awesome food and friendly service. I came here with a party of 5 around 6pm on a weekday and waited a max of 10 minutes before being seated. We ordered the Indonesian specialty pancake, bacon/cheese savory pancake, and poffertjes (little dutch pancakes). I thought all three dishes were really good, standouts are the Indonesian pancake and poffertjes. Starting with the Indonesian pancake: what a beauty, what an enigma. We stared at it for a bit before I decided to ask the server what's the best way to eat this decadent plate of goodness. You're supposed to just go for it and pile the stuffing on the pancake. It's a bit hard to split because of the amount of stuff there is but that's why napkins exist amiright?! The poffertjes are the famous little Dutch pancakes and a perfect complement to the savory plates. Put some whipping cream and ice cream on that little cake and you're in for a sweet sweet treat! Just a short walk from the Anne Frank House, it would be easy to walk right past this small storefront. However, the long line running down the street will tell you you've arrived. The wait outside was a bit long because of limited seating. But the wait inside was even longer because of slow servers. Took long time to get coffee, even longer to get my pancakes, and longer yet to pay the bill. Don't go here if you are looking for a quick breakfast before touring. We were looking up good places to eat in Amsterdam and this showed up as one of the top! It also help that it's close to the Anne Frank House, the Cheese Museum, as well as the Tulip Museum. My friend and I opted to share the Indonesian Pancake (chicken, onions, mushrooms, leeks, and peanut sauce) which also came with a surprise little salad and some shrimp/onion flavored bits as well as the special Stroopwafel Poffertjes that was served with a delicious and warm vanilla sauce and speculoos ice cream. I was super excited to try this place based on all the Yelp reviews. I asked the server for help on what to order and he just recommend The Dutch pancake. So thin, yet crispy and so freaking good. The Pancake Bakery falls on my list of must do when in Amsterdam! My boyfriend and I came here probably 4 times within the 4 days traveling in Amsterdam. 3x for breakfast and 1x for takeout to take on the plane the next morning (don't judge.) Unfortunately this did not live up to the hype. The best thing we tried was the traditional pea soup, very fresh and flavorful. Norwegian- very...creamy... The insides were way to creamy and sour, it made the pancake wet and then ruined its structural integrity. Greenlantic- interesting combination, the cheese hunks didn't melt on the pancake and then created this big hunky green cheese globs. Bacon/mushroom/onion - really heavy and salty, the pancake didn't really come through with this one, tasted again like hunks of stuff. The sweet pancake we tried was the best, stick with that. First food stop after the train ride was a dutch pancake from here! We were checking it out and got a recommendation for the ham and cheese from another couple that was just leaving. They said they chose two, and the one they liked better was the ham and cheese. After looking at the menu, (there are a decent amount of options and savory/sweet/breakfast/etc., we opted for the savory pancake, traditional ham and cheese and it was so simple, yet so tasty! The pancake is super thin and a good ratio of meat to cheese. The best part was the cheese on the top which was crispy and yummy. We decided to sit outside near the canals rather than in and it was really nice to just take it all in and enjoy the sun. I've tried roughly the same pancake now at three different pancakeries in the city so I could compare :-) I ordered a bacon, goat cheese and apple pancake (in the other places it came with honey drizzled on top but not at the Pancake Bakery). I ordered from Pancake Bakery, Mama Pancake, and At Letting. The one I liked the least was at pancake bakery. They use two layers of pancake and sandwich the goods in the middle. The Pancake batter itself is extremely eggy and yellow. I did not care for the eggy flavor or the very giant size due to twice the dough. The bacon was more like ham and the cheese was yellow (yellow goat cheese?) And bland and hard to find. All in all I don't know why there are lines here. The pancakes are bland and not very good but I'd you're hungry and willing to eat it all you do get more food. Oh also, i ordered a tap water and was refused. I had to pay for a drink in exchange for a tap water. Who does that!?!? Also worth noting that their tables all seat 6 people so that they seat you with strangers to pack more people in. We didn't mind but some might not like that type of seating. I'd recommend literally any other pancake place. read more

Had breakfast here before heading over to the Anne Frank museum. I ordered the lemon pancakes and a side of bacon. Can you say AMAZING!! The pancakes were light, the texture reminds me of a crepe, not thick and dense like American pancakes. They had the perfect amount of lemon and were sprinkled with powdered sugar. This place had a line as we approached so you know it's good! The line actually went very quick and we even got our food in record time! Ordered a savory pancake (Canadian bacon and cheese) I think that was it and the (stroop waffle) I was very iffy about the savory.....boy was I wrong! It's an interesting place. I only realized it was formerly owned by the Dutch East India Company after I had ordered. Gotta say, I felt guilty eating there after I knew that. I'm been hearing so much about these amazing delicious Dutch pancakes so I had to try. Delectable spongy goodness in the form of a hot cake. These cakes reaffirmed my trust in European cuisine. Let me tell you I was absolutely TERRIFIED especially after my horrific experience in Paris with NO edible food. The bacon and raisin pancake I ordered came on a hot plate that was completely covered by a large, thin pancake. I loved how the thin bite still had the chew without a heavy filling. We had seen this place reviewed on a YouTube video and wanted to try it.  These crepe-like pancakes seemed to be typical Amsterdam fare while at the same time unique to us.  We were lucky to get a table midday without a reservation. The restaurant is crowded with tables so we were glad they asked us for our Covid passports and really looked at them.  (Many places didn't.)  Then came the choosing from the menu! Pancakes or something else?  If pancakes, savory or sweet?  My wife and I often share our dishes to have a little more breadth to our meals.  Our waiter guided us as to the size of portions and since the tables are so close we could eyeball other diner's choices.  I decided on an omelet (their Greenland omelet) which was certainly big enough for two people. My wife got a pancake with spinach, cashews, mushrooms, and brie.  A combination I had never seen which turned out to be excellent.  There was no room for dessert for us.  Especially since when eyeballing other diner's dessert pancakes they were enormous with mountains of ice cream and cream on top.  Too rich for us by lots.  Despite the busyness of the place the wait staff was very friendly and did not seem rushed with the clientele.  I admire their professionalism in what must be tiring work.  We loved our food and, given more time, would return to try some of the other combinations that looked compelling. read more

Unfortunately it was over cooked and burned and completely took away from anything close to a good taste. My husband, however, ordered a sweet pancake with bananas and Nutella which I very quickly became jealous of since it was far superior to mine. My recommendation is to order sweet versus savory here. The Pancake Bakery is definitely more of a tourist breakfast place but that does not mean that it is not delicious! The first thing that happened when we got there was that... it was closed. I really had an awesome experience here! I had to have a traditional Dutch pancake but I went for savory here and got the bacon and brie and it was pure heaven. I really loved that they baked the bacon into the pancake but put the brie on top. The vat of syrup on the table was pure and delicious and I hope to go back again! One word: poffertjes. Must-eat-all-the-poffertjes-all-the-time!! I could not choose between aforementioned poffertjes or my forever favorite; a cheese pannekoek (pancake). So I got both - duh. Fair disclosure, I split the order of poffertjes with my friend.. and still could not finish my actual pancake, and neither could she. The cheese pannekoek was perfection, most of the cheese was melty and gooey, but then the cheese at the top was crispy and delicious. Because I am a weirdo I add syrup to my cheese pancake and I was in childhood heaven, if just for a moment. People tell you to come to Pancake Bakery and its for good reason. This place is serving up some scrumptious pancakes. Now the pancakes here are not typical pancakes. They are bigger and skinnier with a denser texture. They have tons of different options for toppings from savory to sweet. I went with plain and was happy with my choice. I think if I was ever to return I would love to try the savory pancakes which looked amazing. I could barely finish half my pancake so I might suggest sharing. We also got the poffertjes which are mini pancakes drenched in butter and powder sugar. Holy moly those were amazing. We ate those within minutes. Oh and the best part is we didn't even have to wait before getting sat and were able to get in and out very quickly. Get ready to queue...but not too long. The queue moves quickly and before you know it you'll be sitting in front of a huge pancake three times the size of your face (they're actually more like thin crepes) You will be paralyzed by choice from all the options on the menu. My advice is to get a savory pancake, and save about half of it (having eaten all the savory toppings). The place has good crepes (these are not pancakes). However, after spending 15 euros on a big crepe (nearly $20) the waiter told us we would have to buy a drink to get tap water. It's pretty ridiculous to have your patrons spend so much and then try to get more money out of them for tap water.
