I will preface this by saying the staff was really accommodating and polite during our dinner at roots, however I was disappointed with the quality of our food especially considering how great of reviews this restaurant got. We ordered the charcuterie board and the entire staff (including the kitchen) couldn't tell us what types of cheeses were served to us.... I get if the front of house staff doesn't know off the top of their head but how can the chefs not know what they are serving guests? Entrees were ok but I don't think worth the price. My wife's salmon was very overcooked - to their credit my lamb was cooked perfectly and had a great sauce, but the sides of both dishes were pretty underwhelming. Beef chimichuri was the best meal I've had in Longmont in YEARS. We used to love to go to the Dickens Opera House. Roots menu has plenty of vegetarian and omnivore options. We also had the samosa appetizer and they were perfectly delicious too. read more

The food was delicious. The ambience was nice. The service was mediocre at best. I don't blame Roots. I think it is difficult to find good service help in this climate but I think restaurants need to spend more time training. Our apps came out quickly but one entree was delivered and the other took a full 10 minutes and there were just the two of us. Maybe they put in the wrong order and needed to rush the second but there should have been some acknowledgment of this. I'm just tired of spending my money on mediocre service. First, I love supporting local and am all for eclectic and unique experiences, unfortunately the Mother's Day brunch at Roots was one of the worst and most bizarre and disappointing dining experiences I've ever had. Everything about it was off, I wanted to get a refund (we had prepaid the $55pp) but my husband graciously said it was so comically bad we should just stay and not ruin it for our kids who at least enjoyed playing in the yard (which was the only good thing about the whole thing) and at least we'd have a good story out of it. I did not want to ruin it for my kids, but I regret not speaking up and leaving within the first 15 minutes. With 3 young kids we don't really go out to places like this but my husband wanted to do something special to celebrate, great idea just really poor execution. The service: The hostess sat us at a table inside where we sat for 10 minutes with no one approaching us. The chairs were cheap folding party hall type chairs, a water glass had three obvious breaks in it, it was cold and a terrible Celine Dion style music mix was blasting. The whole thing just seemed uncomfortable so we eventually got up and went back to the hostess to ask if we could go outside, they said they were full but ok, and asked us to go back to the table and carry the silverware and water out. (First not so great sign but ok), outside was much better although still weird music blasting (maybe I'm just not the target demographic?). My kids at least really liked playing cornhole and just did that the entire time. They were not interested in the food which brings me to... The buffet - when I saw it when we were first sat I thought it was the kids buffet. It was so small, and for some reason the yogurt parfait station was placed on a very low table you had to awkwardly bend down to reach it. The plates were tiny, the selection of food was tiny and there wasn't much of it. Everything was lukewarm (yogurt was not cold, hot food was not hot), and the absolute strangest thing was they guarded the tofu. I'm vegetarian and allergic to eggs so was excited when I saw on the menu they had scrambled tofu, but when I asked at the buffet where it was, they said it was behind in a guarded area only the staff could reach and the owner or manager came over to ask if I had purchased a vegan meal. I purchased the full $55 meal and found it very strange I couldn't get tofu (you'd think it'd be the other way around with the meat). They did have ham and chicken but my husband said it just looked like unappetizing banquet chicken and didn't try any of it. So $300 for our family of 5 for churros, yogurt, and my husband had the mini waffles and potatoes. That's literally it. And the picture that's part of it was a passport size picture, at that point all I could do was laugh. Just weird things too like no salt or pepper, ketchup or sauces. And not even coffee or tea included in the $55. Just very strange, did not at all feel like a restaurant. I could've gotten over the atmosphere if the food was good, but it was sparse, small selection, lacking in flavor, and did not even seem fresh. Big expensive bummer. We will not be back, but I do hope they figure some of the kinks out or reinvest in revamping the space, service, or menu. The space itself has potential. read more

Went to Roots to celebrate my birthday. Overall it was fine. I called the day before and was assured that we'd get a table in an igloo. When we showed up, we were told that wasn't the case. We almost left to go get takeout from another restaurant. I wish we would have. The host told us that there was an igloo that we could eat in, but that we'd only have 1 hour in it. Then she told us that it would be a $200 minimum. None of this was mentioned during my call the day before. I'm not sure how the two of us would have eaten $200 worth of food and drinks in an hour. Being told you have 1 hour to spend $200 does not set a good tone for the rest of the experience. Thankfully, the manager was able to fix the situation and sat us in another igloo where we would not be on a time constraint. What's weird though is that there was at least 3 empty igloos the entire time we were there. The food was just okay, especially for the price. My mom got the vegan pre fix cultural menu of the month for $55 and I got the vegetarian restaurant week menu for $45. She definitely chose the better option. While I enjoyed the starters that came with mine, I found the eggplant capellini entree to be extremely underwhelming. It was dry, bland, and tasteless. I couldn't eat the other half of it. Mine didn't come with dessert so I ordered a $15 bread pudding. It definitely was not worth $15; it was tasty, but also small and nothing extraordinary. Overall, the food didn't justify the price. It's priced on par with fine dining restaurants in downtown Denver but the quality of food does not match. The sweater cocktail is delicious and is perfect for a cold evening. Our server was extremely nice and friendly. Not sure if I'd go back though. read more

It was a nice little place and had a good atmosphere, most of the food was good. The Brussel sprouts were amazing and would definitely recommend those. I give it three stars because they forgot to bring out parts of a few dishes. For example, we ordered the tofu kebab, which says on the menu that it comes with hummus and a salad. They only brought out the tofu kebab and no hummus or salad and then the hostess argued with us that we were wrong and we had to show her the menu to prove to her that it did in fact come with the sides. We also got the chocolate cake that is supposed to come with chocolate sorbet, but no sorbet. Hands down one of our favorite experiences amidst these hard Covid times! Our family reserved an igloo for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the diversity on the savory menu (that even my kids finished!), and the ambiance of the evening. The igloos have heaters and was warm enough to wear a long sleeve shirt and pants but I also used a thin blanket over my legs. First night as Passenger. Still advertised as Roots online for booking a table. We had amazing food and drinks when it was Roots. Arrived right on time. 6:00 pm. Nice and quiet, which we love. One server. About 5 tables of guests in entire restaurant. Ordered drinks. Mine was awful. Forgot the whipped cream. Just bitter espresso with a bitter liquor. Sent it back. Wanted champagne cocktail. Roots used to serve lovely big ones, delicious. Passenger's in tiny glass. Bitter. We are not fans of tapas. But didnt want burgers. Ordered tarot chips and nigerian dish. Waited 30 minutes. Server came to ask, "did you want to order food". We DID order. She was flustered. Food came. Tasty taro chips but nigerian beef just well done bits of beef with perhaps 4 peanuts chopped up and a tiny bit of sauce. $72. Manager gave us 2 free doughnuts. He probably heard us complaining about my drink, tapas. It is hard to get a new place going. We wish them well but this place is not for us. read more

We took the family out for dinner there last night. We ordered many dishes including the Brussels sprouts, cauliflower wings, French fries, mini naan (2 orders), shrimp Indonesian rice (2 orders), shrimp poboy, Chana masala, Mac and cheese fritters, samosas, chocolate and mango sorbets, death by chocolate cake, and bread pudding. When we arrived we were taken to our igloo which we had reserved for an extra $25. The outdoor area was almost completely black, no exterior lighting. The mini naan were almost raw and flavorless. The accompanying tzatziki was over salted. The shrimp poboy ($15) was on bread that was about an 3-4", hardly worth $15. The shrimp Indonesian rice was so salty that we couldn't finish it, and each order came with only 2 shrimp in each dish. The sorbets were okay, but very icy in texture and lacking flavor. The death by chocolate cake was very crumbly and dry, and the accompanying chocolate sauce tasted like straight unsweetened cocoa powder in some sort of alcohol. My daughter couldn't even eat it. The bread pudding had a nice flavor but was dense. The sauce was supposed to be a whiskey sauce but there was no whiskey flavor. The Brussels were tasty, as were the Mac and cheese fritters, cauliflower wings, samosas and fries. Notably standard fried "bar food" you can get anywhere. Overall the food was nothing special and the atmosphere was, well, there was none. Additionally, and this is a personal view, only half the staff were masked even though we were required to wear them, and when we left the staff were all just hanging out inside. The place was desolate and we won't be back. Finally, there was a 22% fee added to the bill for staff wages and "sustainability ", separate from any tip you may give your servers. We left with a whopping $200 bill for small plates that were partially inedible, sitting outside in a dark plastic igloo. This was my second time there and we won't be back. read more

My husband and I went here last night for their Valentine dinner specials. We had the most horrible experience all the way around. Our waitress was not attentive. We watched people sit down after us and receive their entrees before us. The plates were $75 each and the food was not at all worth the $75 we paid per person. Not to mention our food was cold when we finally received it. Manager approached us about our experience, and we shared with him our disappointment we were feeling. He looked at my husband and told him he would talk to us another time when my husband was calm and collective. What!! My husband was calm and answered his question quietly and respectively. I bill was $230.00 and we walked out so dissatisfied with food and service all the way around. We will not be going back here ever, and I will share our experience with others as well. read more

I have been wanting to try Roots as it's super close to home. I saw yesterday that they added to their hours and was excited to order takeout for dinner. I mixed my days up and they technically weren't open for dinner but the chef was kind enough to offer to still make us dinner! So nice, right?! Everything was amazing! And pick up was a breeze.. you pay ahead so there's as little contact as possible. 10/10 would recommend to friends, family and neighbors! My wife took me to Roots for a birthday dinner. WOW, We were really impressed. We had the Lamb and Fish and chips. My wife asked me why I would order lamb when I don't like it. I took my mother here for her birthday with a 5:30 reservation and the place looked amazing but that is where the positive comments end. It took 30 minutes for us to get our drinks ordered and that was only because I walked to the bar and had to ask someone if we needed to place the order at the bar. Another ten minutes pass by and the manager comes out to take our order and we still thought this restaurant might be ok, boy were we wrong. Another hour passed by and we still never received our food. I eventually packed my wife, kids, and mother in the car and told the manager that we needed the food to go because it took entirely too long for our food to arrive at the table and we had to get our kids ready for bed and school the next day... It took another twenty minutes to get our food in to go bags and an even extra 10 minutes for them to give me the check. The manager did provide us with a discount but I think that was at the behest of the woman working behind the bar; by far the most professional person there. Once we voiced our complaints to her that was when she got everyone else to act like they should value their customers. Ultimately we left the restaurant at 7:45 with the food in bags. The food was decent but the service was horrible, and to top it all off, the gas for the outside heaters ran out and when we asked one of the waiters if they could replace the heater he said yes and never came back. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I would add 0 stars if that was possible. read more

Very very disappointed. They claim to have vegan options then screwed up our order by putting dairy in it after the waitress checked twice. God forbid we actually had a dairy allergy and that would have been bad. The Greek salad that was $8 literally had 5 pieces of lettuce and there was nothing "Greek" about it. The alcoholic mixed drinks barely tasted like alcohol. The entrees were ridiculously overpriced and weren't even that great. The vegan entrees took over 45 minutes to come out and by the time they did it was 9:30 so we had to get it to go. The ambiance is extremely bizarre and feels like a church. The next day, we noticed that our fixed meals were still completely wrong. LOL The waitress was very nice and apologetic, as well as the general manager, Steve. Absolutely incredible service from top to bottom. The server was knowledgeable and super friendly. She guided us through the menu and recommended some customer favorites. It was our first visit to the location in Longmont. The burger was very good but my margarita tasted like weak lemonade. Pretty flavorless and tequila was basically undetectable. A new employee was learning how to make drinks and had us take a sip to see if they were okay, but we didn't realize how weak they were after one sip. I should have said something before leaving. If we give it a second chance, we'll hope the drinks will be on par with other establishments in town. If the drinks had been good, I would probably give 4 stars. read more

I went to Roots Happy Hour to meet up with some friends. We chose Roots because of outdoor seating was available and their menu looked so good. We were so relaxed and enjoyed our food. The outdoor patio lawn gazebo area was great. They definitely made you feel safe with the 6 ft apart spacing and all the workers had masks on. The Happy Hour menu put a sophisticated, healthy, twist to ordinary appetizers and then some. We will definitely be back again soon. I took my friends here for my best friend's birthday. Once we were seated, our waiter asked us if we were ready to order, to which we responded that we needed a couple minutes. Following that, our waiter didn't come back to take our order for another HOUR. This is not a time exaggeration. We eventually had to flag someone down to help us. Once we ordered, it took another 30 minutes for the first two dishes to come out. Both dishes were cold. We didn't get any more food for another 25-30 minutes. We also had to flag down the waiters to get any drink / water refills. No one came to come pick up our empty glasses and plates in between. Eventually we had to start placing our empty dishes on a nearby table ourselves. After 2.5+ hours of this, we were so fed up that all we wanted was the check. Once we got the check, I asked for an itemized receipt and realized that they had charged us for a dish that they never brought out to the table. I can definitely understand if a restaurant is understaffed or exceptionally busy, a person can / should expect slower service. That said, it didn't seem like this restaurant was dealing with either. The wait staff seemed rather relaxed and uninterested. For a $275 meal, we were incredibly frustrated and disappointed. We will never be going back. read more

Wish I had taken pictures but I totally forgot; but this is a very lovely rustic restaurant. Perfect if you're GF, vegetarian, or vegan. I choose the Mushroom and bell pepper Napoleon. Very filling, and well seasoned. I also had the Caprese Polenta Napoleon appetizer, so I apparently was on a Napoleon kick. I couldn't had been more pleased with my plates. The services was also phenomenal. Although there is a little wait, the time can be cut in half if you make you dinner request when the reservation is made. Everything is made fresh, and made to order. So there has to be a respect for the time and pride that the chef dedicates to everything that leaves her kitchen. Like I stated earlier, it's rustic but there's a warmth that you feel soon as you enter. The seating is outdoors in a garden setting. Perfect for as Colorado transition to autumn weather. So I recommend this venue, the menus is balanced that can appeal to a variety of diets. The service great, social distancing great. read more

Worst dining experience, Valentine's Day disaster. After seeing so many good reviews I booked this restaurant for the Saturday before Valentine's Day for my wife and I. Upon booking they have you select which preset Valentine menu you would like, prepay for the entire meal ($160), and then follow up with a text about the details to meal you selected (photo attached). Upon arrival the first thing we noticed was that the restaurant was freezing! We selected to eat inside knowing that it was going to be cold, but it did not help. I would guess it was around 50 degrees inside and all of the guests were eating with there jackets on. My wife was wearing a dress which really didn't pan out well. We got seated and the server came up to confirm what we had preordered, it was the wrong order. So we went through the menu again in person and re-ordered. At this point it is already seeming a bit chaotic. We waited about 30 minutes until we got our drink order in (a bottle of wine). About 15 minutes later they brought us the bottle and apologized claiming the bar was backed up. Took 45 minutes to get an unopened bottle of wine. Once they got the wine to the table it was clear the server did not know how to use the bottle opener as she broke the cork at which point I just opened the bottle myself. After about an hour they brought out what should have been the appetizer, but instead it was both the appetizer and the starter together. I am assuming they did this because they were already running so far behind they were trying to play catchup. The food was fine and we finished the dishes and waited for the main course. After an hour and a half they brought out the main course. Sure enough one of the dishes they brought out was the wrong one, keep in mind they only have 3 options and we had preordered and reordered this upon arrival. They go back to the kitchen and bring out the correct dish. My wife and I both cut into our medium rare steaks, and they are both WELL done (pictures uploaded on yelp- almost last picture). At this point it has just been one thing after the next, it is freezing cold and we haven't eaten our main course after about 2 hours... We ask to speak to the manager about a refund so we can leave. I have pulled hair out of my food before and continued to eat it without saying a word, so this is very out of character for me. The manager (Amy) comes to our table. We explain everything that has happened and ask if we can just get a refund ($160) and leave. Instead of being apologetic or showing any sympathy Amy explains that she couldn't give us a full refund because we at the appetizer and starter (we did not eat the main course or dessert). Amy heads back to pack the rest of our bottle of wine and I assume issue a refund. She comes back 15 minutes later (so at this point we have been there for over 2 hours) and charges me $38 for the bottle of wine and does not give me any explanation as to if we will be seeing a refund (which we still have not seen). The manager was unprofessional and showed no empathy at all, didn't give us a refund or even comp the bottle of wine. Both the tables sitting next to us also said they would not be returning because they also had a terrible experience. I would not recommend eating here to anyone. I understand having an "off night" but for the manager to be just as miserable as our experience really was the final straw. We paid $160 for two salads, and $38 dollars to drink a bottle of wine in the cold... My husband wrote this and then they called after seeing the review and said they would refund us. Still no refund. Not looking forward to trying to chase down a refund so we can rebook a late Valentine's dinner later this month. read more
