Every place around was packed and Patio Thai was no exception , waited about 5-7 minutes for hostess and she said they were opening upstairs room for us and 3 other tables waiting . Took a little while but it was worth the wait!! Spring rolls were delicious and crust was light and fluffy. Red curry chicken was absolutely fantastic per my Wife. And I had the crispy pork delight . Pork was on point and crispy with a sauce that was perfect. Staff were very polite and speedy, the room had plenty of room and very accommodating. This is one of my favorite Thai spots in the city. I tend to get noodle dishes since those are my favorite Thai dishes, however, their curries are divine here too. We live in walking distance so tend to walk over. There is free street parking nearby if you do drive. It's also a great takeout spot. Their pad Thai is pretty good, but I like their pad see ew the best for noodles. When we've gone, we've eaten inside, but it seems like they have a beautiful patio in the back. The service can feel a little slow if you're in a rush. If you're doing takeout you go upstairs to grab your order. If you want to dine in, you go down to the left. On a recent trip, I tried their salmon curry and it was incredible. I highly recommend ordering this wholesome and delicious dish. This is a wonderful spot for Thai food. read more

Our first time here and the food was great! I enjoyed my Panang curry with chicken and shrimp. We shared the Thai chili wings which were very crispy and flavorful. My spouse got the fried rice with beef. He ended up asking for the Thai chili sauce so maybe offering a sauce would make the dish better. Overall everything was great! Patio Thai was absolutely wonderful! We made a reservation for 12 people on the patio for a graduation dinner and the atmosphere could not have been more perfect! They even put up a sign saying congrats grad on the brick wall. The table was beautifully decorated, the service was great both on the day and in the days leading up to it. The food is excellent and they were very accommodating of two shellfish allergies in our group. Tried Patio Thai for the first time and it did not disappoint! We started with the Thai wings in sweet chili sauce -- perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and coated in just the right amount of flavorful sauce. Hands down a must-order. I also got the beef drunken noodles, which came out hot, saucy, and packed with flavor. A little on the sweeter side, but still super satisfying and comforting. Walked in here on a Wednesday evening. They have a parking space across the street. We got seated right away. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The patio was cute, with a mini fountain. The second floor has more seats/tables. Our server Joshua answered questions about the menu and was personable. Their drinks were great! I particularly like sweet ones - Woman from Venus, Lychee martini, Piece of Heaven. They were all refreshing. Rama chicken was sauteed chicken in peanut sauce with carrots and broccoli. I got a hard Thai tea ($13) , papaya salad medium spice ($10) drunken noodles with tofu with medium spice ($16) and , crispy duck Thai basil with mediu ($23). Food came in about 20ish minutes. The papaya salad had the perfect spice at medium. Drunken noodles were a bit disappointing to me as it was a super sweet sauce but not much spice or savoriness. The star was the crispy duck Thai basil, perfect amount of spice with great seasoning. The duck was fried well and was crispy, moist, and flavorful. Staff and service went by very well. A few issues on our recent visit here. First, there are stairs up or down - not viable for mobility impaired. Another minor inconvenience is that there is no private parking, and street parking is both limited and has a fee. My wife ordered their beef rib soup, and we both thought it was gamey & tough. I must point out that our waitress took it back and replaced it with a different dish with no issue (and we were not charged for it either). I ordered the drunken noodles and requested a "true Thai" level of spice (I do like the heat!). Very frequently I get ignored but here the spice level was excellent. The flavors were great - so much better than needing to douse with spicy sauce afterwards. The decor was dark, booth cushions were worn, there were holes in the wallboard and the restroom needed cleaning. All-in-all it wasn't bad, and after the initial mishap the food was great. Probably won't be back to dine here, though. We did note a number of to-go orders, so that may be a better option. read more

This time I got the pad see ew with tofu like I usually do as a to go order. the tofu almost tasted like it was fried in rancid oil it definitely was the only thing I could taste in my food. Service was fast and observant, ambiance was good and the Thai Tea was amazing. Prices were fair. First let me caveat this by saying Thai has never been a favorite, so I was out of my element. I also hate giving less than 4 stars, especially when it's at a restaurant who checked all the boxes, and happens to be in a style I do not care for or have a lot of experience with. That said the food left something to be desired. I feel the tofu was overcooked or soggy, and the thick noodles were so gooey I have to think it was a prep or ingredients failure, not simply a style one. The tofu came out crispy and hot, so not a freshness issue from the kitchen. But when you bit into it it was chewing a deep fried wet sponge. There was little flavor and the texture was gross. I am a vegetarian and but have never had tofu served like that. So maybe thats how its supposed to be. But I doubt it. It was wierd firm and crunchy and then a squirt of flavorless warm watery oil when you bit into it. I cant believe anyone would like it that way. The peanut sauce it came with was flavorful though. The Tufo on the friends dish with the thick noodles wasnt much better and the thick noodles were nasty, overcooked and overly gooey. If you like Thai food and this is how its done ignore my criticism. But can't believe that it would be truly appetizing in anyway as was presented. That said the friend I was with said it was "ok" and he was the one who wanted Thai and loves Thai. Given he is also a foodie and normally raves when the food is good, I can only assume that it was as he said "OK". TL;DR. Foodie friend that loves Thai simply said it was OK, while this Vegetarian found the final product off putting and gross. That said friend did take home the leftovers. So not horrible if you like Thai, and if not a vegetarian consider this a 4 star review. If vegetarian and/or not a fan of Thai, 3 stars. There has to be better Thai options to try. That said the service and prices, speed of service and ambiance deserve a second chance even from me. Because maybe it was just our menu choices, or the tofu wasnt maybe as fresh as it could have been. That said I would avoid anything with tofu, and if you dont like the thick fat noodles extra gooey and chewy avoid them too. read more

The Patio Thai has been on my list for a hot minute and I finally got to try it today! It was the perfect day to sit out on the beautiful patio. Plenty of shade and a lovely breeze. For food and drink, we tried the Thai iced tea, daily beauty tea, papaya salad, spring rolls, chicken pad se ew, and spicy lemongrass chicken. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The papaya salad was a great spicy starter to the meal. Next time I'd skip the spring rolls. They were excellent, don't get me wrong, but standard. For the mains, I'll say the lemongrass chicken was a standout. The lemongrass slices did throw us off but we ate around them. We had paid for parking so we could minimize the walking to this Thai restaurant so that cost $4 before we sat down. I ordered the lunch special of "short ribs in a noodle soup", but that one gigantic rib was so difficult to cut, finally brought it to my mouth to get a bite. Not braised long enough so I attempted the noodles and soup which had zero flavor. My hubby tried the "short" rib and agreed that it had a gamey taste, unpleasant. I tried to wait for our server, but got up and walked to her notifying my dissatisfaction. She then offered a different meal. My next order was Shrimp Pad See-ew, which was a generous sized portion with four large shrimps. Hubby had finished his chicken Drunken Noodles which he had asked to be spicy, request was fulfilled. The restaurant did comp the first meal so we were pleased. The restaurant was decorated in dark colors, but we were downstairs so we felt it didn't uplift us. This spot is super cute and I had some higher expectations. The See-ew was not that good imo- but then again it may be a preference thing. My one friend loved hers, the other got the pork gyoza and loved those. The service was pretty quick- said it was gonna be about a 30 minute wait to be seated, but we sat at the bar about 5 minutes before a table cleared for us. It is such a cute hidden gem in downtown Richmond! It's right by VCUs campus. It's super easy to get to and even has a parking lot right next to it which is big for the city! A group of six of us had dinner on September 6, 2024 and sat outside on the beautiful patio area which was lovely, especially as it got dark. The food we had was Duck Noodle Elegance (a soup), Spicy Chicken Lemongrass, Spicy Ka-Prow with Beef, Spicy Ka-Prow with Chicken, Drunken Noodles with Chicken, Pad See-Ew with Beef, and Ka-Pow Fried Rice with Chicken, and extra white rice. All the food was overly sweet and not very tasty. Everything was sweet! We later asked our server why everything was sweet, and he said that it was "Thai-fusion" and the way they served it. All was under seasoned as well. We also ordered most things spicy. The best of the dishes ordered was the Spicy Ka-Prow with Beef (the only food we have a photo of), and the Spicy Ka-Prow with Chicken. Menu pics are attached. At first the service was pretty good but about halfway through the meal, the server pretty much disappeared - we didn't see him going to any tables. We had to ask another server to ask him to bring our check. We really enjoyed the patio, but we would not go back for the food. My husband took me here for my birthday and everything was amazing! The customer service was top-notch, the food was delicious, and the ambience was fantastic. We arrived an hour before closing but the staff went above and beyond to accommodate our needs. They didn't rush us at all! We sat inside in the front and had 2 drinks the mangonada and the pomegarita. Both were strong but tasty! They craft some very cute photo worthy cocktails and mocktails here. Upon walking in, I was seated immediately with friendly workers. The thai tea was very refreshing and sweet. I will say it's more on the milkier side. The food came out fast and the pad see ew was very flavorful. The soy sauce/oyster sauce flavor on the pad see ew was very strong and delicious. The portions were GENEROUS. I split the pad see ew with my partner and still couldn't finish it! I felt that the chinese broccoli was a little bitter, and could have been replaced with regular broccoli. The vegetable soup was really good and refreshing. It was light yet flavorful at the same time. The mango sticky rice IS A MUST!!! It was very fresh and the mangoes used were extremely sweet! They put something crunchy on top and use blue colored rice. The rice was so warm and chewy and they were generous with the coconut sauce. The food was extremely good but the interior was a bit dusty and outdated. The floor had a dead roach and there were dust so it felt kind of unsettling to eat at. Spot. Hitter. Was staying in downtown Richmond for work and was looking for something for an early dinner. Heard of this place on the recommendation of a coworker and decided to give it a shot, and man am I so happy I did! The restaurant itself is in a charming neighborhood and has the cutest back patio. The weather was gorgeous the day I went, so opted to sit back there. It was Happy Hour (4:30-7:30 I believe), so I got my Singha draft beer for a $1.00 off. Chose my go-to Thai meal of Green Curry with Shrimp (and white rice) from the dinner menu and OMG when I tell you I practically licked the bowl clean. It was absolutely delicious--exactly what I was hoping for and just the right amount of heat. I'm drooling just thinking about this meal again. Overall, I loved my early evening here. The entire vibe of this place is wonderful - beautiful patio outside with some gorgeous red brick, fountain, etc - felt very regal and we ended up having the whole place to ourselves... and a much more intimate scene on the inside. Love that its basically just a remodeled house? Service was quick and reliable, price was affordable (probs because of the coupon - but still), and there was plenty of variation on the menu. The Chicken Drunken Noodles were amazing - I still think about those tomato chunks and the soft pillowy texture of those noodles. Our other dish was a Tofu Gteen Curry, which had a KICK to it for sure but definitely delivered. I have been coming to Patio Thai for over 4 years and it is my favorite restaurant in Richmond. It's the perfect spot whether you're catching up with friends, having a date night, or hosting a work dinner. I often do carry out as well and the separate take out area upstairs makes it easy to grab and go without disturbing the dine in guests. Reservations can be made on Resy. You really can't go wrong with any of their dishes. Some of my favorites are the pad thai, drunken noodles, pad see ew, red curry, sriracha wings, pineapple fried rice, and spicy eggplant. I've hosted two work dinner parties here with ~20 guests and they couldn't make it any easier. You order from the catering menu and pay in advance. They've been able to accommodate requests with no problem. They also go the extra mile and decorate the room without asking. Everyone I have brought here has loved it! Thai food might be one of my favorites and being in the military- I've travelled and had a lot of Thai food- Americanized and authentic. This was right at the top!
