Small town diner, classic styling, good people. It's confusing though, as the sign outside has the name "Rail Side diner" (owing to its location across the street from the railroad tracks) but all signage inside has the "Pelican Cafe". It seems they relocated to this spot but left the outside name. This place was busy. The one person waiting tables was working the tables and the counter seating as if she's done it for years. Turns out, she has, based on our conversation. There was a no-wasted-movement method to her dance around the diner. Wood panel walls, requisite animal heads on the wall, seats at the counter -- this place has it all. So does the menu: traditional breakfast items, sandwiches -- hot and cold, omelets, burgers, salads, entrees from the usual chicken fried steak, to liver and onions, meatloaf, polish sausage and kraut. (It wasn't until much later in my visit that I figured out why this little town had something like polish sausage and kraut -- but kudos for it). They also have a daily special they write on the chalkboard, a board that covers the soda cooler in the back. That was a little weird, since you'd have to know it was there. Maybe in small towns they like the conversation and would rather people ask. I went with breakfast. It was standard fare but very good, came out relatively quickly, and I rather liked the fact that when I asked for toast, there was only one slice of bread. Less waste that way. The coffee wasn't anything special, but had enough caffeine to do the trick. Three stars for the food, but four stars for the menu variety and wait staff that kept the coffee coming. Can't quite round up, but maybe on my next visit.

Wow...the cook here knows how to make a bang-up breakfast sandwich! Delish!! Very affordable too. Better stop in even if your not hungry. Server is very nice and FAST. Parking is tight.....be careful.

This place has the best breakfast ever! And they cook it exactly how you want it even if you're weird and you like all your food separated on the plate. :-) (That comment is for a certain someone that reads these regularly) We stop here every time we come through Laurel. The lady running the place is great too!

Always a great meal. By far the best little diner in the area. Service is great and food is even better.

Great apps--the hoisin chicken flatbread was brilliant. And the pasta of the night was awesome, rich sauce, sugar snap peas, chicken. Bombs of taste and very filling. The steak wedge salad was fresh, crisp, and prepared totally right. It was a crazed Friday night but our server hung in there and did a fine job.

We started with the octopus appetizer and a gluten-free pita. The pita seemed more like a basic gluten-free pizza crust than traditional pita, but that was a minor point because the muhammara was excellent and the pita/crust worked really well with the octopus. They also did a good job accommodating gluten-free needs throughout the meal, via a dedicated gluten-free menu. For dinner, I had the stuffed pork chop, which had a somewhat Greek-inspired preparation. It was served over orzo and stuffed with feta and olives. Really flavorful, well executed, and a more interesting preparation than the typical pork chop. My wife had the duck and enjoyed it as well. We paired dinner with a bottle of Nebbiolo. Their overall wine selection was solid. The atmosphere was comfortable and polished without being overly formal, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Good food, interesting menu, nice atmosphere, and strong service.

It has an eclectic, cozy feel to it and you are immediately welcomed as you enter the door. Food is served tapas style which I liked because we were able to try more things! Things we ordered: Pork belly: Smoky and super flavorful, had a nice labneh sauce with it Brussels sprouts: Deliciously coated in buffalo cause and Gorgonzola cheese Broccolini: one of my favorites, paired with pine nuts and a salsa verde sauce Duck & Foie Sausage: Hearty sausage paired with creamed leeks- interesting flavor combos here! Lamb sliders: I liked these paired with goat cheese but nothing special Sticky toffee pudding: decadent caramel delight! Order this! Drinks: Watermelon cucumber margarita (made with agave wine) super refreshing and strong I was impressed by the unique flavor combinations of the dishes and overall experience I had here. Great place that offers local Red Lodge cuisine!
