I had a feeling something might be amiss when the email confirming my registration said: "By choosing to stay at The Pelican, you agree to give us a positive review." What? I never agreed to any such thing. That's not how reviews work; you get a good review if you deserve it. And they do not. I will say three positive things: (1) the property looks nice on the outside and seems to be very well cleaned, (2) it's a short walk to the beach, and (3) keyless entry and self-checkin. But the rest is not so positive. Inside my room was a bed, a minifridge, a TV mounted on the wall, and a bathroom. That's it. No nightstand, no side table, no spare chairs, no nothing. It wasn't as if there was no room -- there would have been plenty of room for any and all of those things. If I needed to sit to put on socks, I had to sit on the toilet lid (which buckled under and was loose when I sat on it). There was no closet or any way to hang anything up. The bathroom door would not close all the way (I was glad I was alone, but I would have been furious if someone had been with me -- no way would two people sharing this room have been acceptable). There was exactly one electrical outlet in the whole room, and it was half-occupied by the minifridge. Not having at least one more outlet in the bathroom was ridiculous; to use a hair dryer, you have to unplug the fridge and anything else you have plugged (like a charger) because the hair dryer plug would not fit with anything else plugged it. And you had to dry your hair several feet away from any bathroom mirror. I was nervous that eventually the toilet would not flush because the handle was loose, because you have to manipulate it just the right way for a flush to happen. And the seat would not stay up on its own; I'm sure women might be OK with that, but I'm a guy who had to drop trou and underwear completely so I would have a free hand to hold up the seat so I could urinate. They bragged about having a rooftop spa; I went up there to check it out, and the hot tub's water was lukewarm at best. The TV was only set for streaming services, but most of them had obviously not been set up, and unless you wanted to log into one using your own password (which I certainly would not do on someone else's TV), you were out of luck. A rented room should either make sure it's easy to watch streaming that has been set up and paid for (with written instructions), or use a regular cable or satellite system so that it is not such a pain in the neck to watch the TV. The most insane thing was the way they cleaned the hallways and common areas. A series of pipes were sticking out at various points along the floor, and each day they would flood the hallways with water, and then housekeepers would come by to mop. In the morning, all the floors were soaking wet and dangerously slippery. One of the pipes was right outside my room; the first time I heard the very loud water running, I thought it was raining. The final straw was the checkout procedure. In the confirmation email, it clearly stated that one could get a late checkout as late as 2:00 pm for $50. I called to arrange this, and the woman who answered the phone said late checkout was only 1:00 pm. I explained that this is not what the email said, so she asked me to reply to it, and request the 2:00 pm time and see what the response was. I then got a text reply that simply said they got my request, and to please call the number to confirm or to see if the manager was in the lobby (it is only staffed part-time) and talk to him. Well, there he was in the morning, so I showed him the text, and he agreed that 2:00 would be fine. Then he asked if I could possibly pay by cash because their credit machine was currently not working. That sounded like BS to me, so I told him I had no cash, and that I'm sure he could charge me as soon as his machine was fixed. On the day of my checkout, I was harassed by the housekeeping staff. One came by at 11:00 am, knocking on the door to tell me to check out. I explained to her I had a late checkout at 2:00. Then a second housekeeper came by at 12; I told her the same thing. Then they both banged on the door at 1:00 and insisted I leave. I showed them my email, explained my conversation with the manager, and told them I would be leaving by 2:00 as I had paid for. They finally left me alone, but I immediately started writing an email to the management, complaining about this harassment, and berating them for not communicating to the housekeeping staff that they should not be bothering me. I suggested that they might escape my displeasure and my negative review if they would refund the $50 I had paid for the late checkout. I never got a response. After I got home, I looked at my credit card transactions on line. They charged me $50, then credited me $50, then charged me again for $50. I don't know if the manager decided to give me a credit, and then someone else unknowingly charged me again, but at this point, it didn't read more
