This was one of my first experiences trying African food, and even though it was about four years ago, I still think about this place all the time. In fact, it's one of those restaurants that randomly pops into my head because the food was that memorable. My friend and I were walking around the food hall trying to decide where to eat and honestly had no idea what to order. The owner came out, started chatting with us, shared a bit about his background and his food, and immediately made us feel welcome. When we told him we were open to trying anything, he offered to pick some of his favorite dishes for us. Everything he chose was incredible. Not only was the food delicious, but the experience itself is what stuck with me all these years later. You can tell he genuinely cares about his customers and takes pride in what he does. His kindness, passion, and hospitality made us feel like more than just customers. Four years later, I still crave the food and remember how warmly we were treated. That's rare. The chicken and rice were fine, nothing super special, pretty basic seasoning-wise. But I was so excited for the fufu and egusi. The fufu had such a good soft texture, almost like mashed potatoes but firmer and able to hold its shape when you picked it up. Let's just say I was not disappointed. This was actually very good. I got the Egusi with beef. I'm one who doesn't like certain textures but surprisingly textured was good and perfect. My spouse and my 4yr old picky eater son loved it too! As a Mexican, I'm not use to certain flavors outside of what I grew up with. I found the flavors fascinating and the chicken was tender and delicious. Just not my wife's cup of tea and I could see the flavor being slightly controversial when compared to the crowd pleasing other dishes. This is a ghost kitchen so find a spot out front on the street (with a great auto shop, shoutout to Joseph at precision auto clinic). But you simply order and the woman who helped us today was so sweet and worked so hard! A true one woman show and everything came out just perfectly, I was so impressed! When paying I caught a glimpse of the inside and snapped a few shots--amazing what can be done in such a modest space. I think we were the first to arrive and our food took ~20 minutes, a great turnaround for the effort. Eagerly I walk into the building tonget me soup as i head down the hall I come to door 11. I would like to say foe the record that it would have been a better business model to not to let the customer see behind the curtian!!! Know I am at foor 11 on the right side of the hall and the little room is in shambles pots and oand everywhere, i knock 3 times then yell out hello... At that moment I felt like Dorthy when the curtian was pulled back... it's a Latina Mom cooking and not Nigerian Damn!!! At first I thought maybe I was at the wrong door but when I asked if the was the Peppered Goat? She said "yes" and could she help me... I said I am here to to pick up my Peppered Goat Soup and she asked my name and opened a brown storage container and pulled out my order handed it to me and went back to the stove!! I like a lot of the food from Africa, and have been to Ghana and Morocco. I was excited to try out The Peppered Goat, and as you can tell by the five stars, they did not disappoint. I've got a few suggestions as well. I ordered a Peppered Goat Pie and a Peppered Beef Pie. Both were delicious. The crust was a perfectly flakey crust, and the meat in both were cooked to perfection, flavorful and tender. It's pretty rare that you can have meat this tender. 1.) I showed up there instead of ordering ahead. I think it's probably easier to order in advance or order via delivery rather than hang out in the hallway for 30 minutes. In other words, it's not a restaurant. It's one of numerous kitchens in a hallway, nothing more, although there are a couple of metal benches with seats in the parking lot outside. 2.) If you are curious about trying goat and have never tried it before, this would be an outstanding first place to do it. I don't know what people think goat might taste like, but here, it's very tender, spicy, and flavorful. It's not "weird" tasting at all, but I do notice that a lot of my friends have never tried goat, so I figured I would mention this. 3.) If the pies are this good, I can just about guarantee that the egusi soup, eba or fufu, and other dishes are really great. Also, I noticed that other people seem to love their jollof rice, so there's that. 4.) What's also cool is that they have vegan dishes. For instance, one of the choices is Peppered Vegan Pie, which are mushrooms smothered in their signature pepper sauce recipe. There is also a vegan swallow combo (a swallow dish is dough-like food that is typically eaten with soups or stews, and can include cassava or yam that has been pounded....so it has nothing to do with birds). I had the lamb. It was spicy and flavorful. Better than any other place. I've tried so far in LA and it's hard to find this kind of food I'm not sure what the jolloff rice was spicy and yummy too. I love it ! I took a picture of it off the menu. I don't know why they didn't give me my plantains though... I asked for the meal I got the Coca Cola I didn't want that I wanted plantains. Food is better than others. Service is not the greatest. they ran out of moimoi cake offered to replace with a malt drink. When the food arrived they put the malt with the hot food together. I enjoyed my peppered goat. Egusi and fufu was not bad. My friend who doesn't eat goat ended up with a bottle of warm malt and shared some fufu and Egusi with me. She was not satisfied at all. I look at the menu and realized they could have replace the moi moi with a chicken Pattie $7.50 to make her happy. instead they just give her a warm malt $5.00 to replace the moi moi $6.50. I have been really craving fufu with soup and I heard about this place from an article. It's tucked away in a secluded street with a building that seems to host multiple different shops. My guess-- a ghost kitchen? I placed my order through their website for pick up. It estimated for 20 minutes. I ordered the egusi soup and okra stew (both meatless), adding two fufus. Going into the hallway, their door is easy to find with the restaurant sign posted next to it. The lady handed me off my to-go box so the service was seamless. Now to the food... I've had other Fufus in the So-Cal area, so my tastebuds are very familiar with the spices and tastes. Their egusi was delicious and had a yummy bitterness that I enjoyed. The okra stew was a bit different from what I'm used to. It seemed to have a bit more of a tomato base? I thought it was okay for the most part. I will say the portions are very fair. Ive ordered several times in the last few months and have never had a wrong order (unlike the orher naij restaurant in town). They wrap and package the order very well to avoid it wasting during the delivery. What I usually order is, jellof, plaintain, suya and chips w/sause, stewed beef, efo (spinach) and goat pepe soup all are always 10/10. The portions are large enough to share. I saw someone recommend this place yesterday and I saw it was not far from where I was at the time and drove there. This was my first time trying African food, so I was a little afraid, I wouldn't like it. The service was amazing and quick. The lady did tell me my food was hot to be careful. I have wanted to try this place for years but sadly it was a disappointment. The Catfish Pepper Soup was nothing but bones and yam and the yam was so big it absorbed all the "soup.". No liquid to be found. I requested it to not be spicy for my husband but that was ignored. The Yam Porridge the same thing. Requested it not be spicy and request was also ignored. The Ox Tail plate was very greasy though the rice was delicious. However for the amount we paid ($25?!) the portions did not match. If I didn't drive over an hr and pay over $200 to be disappointed I would've given this an extra star. Honestly this place should be 1.5 stars but the jollof bumped it to 2.
