First of all, before we even dined here, I was corresponding with the restaurant (mostly about gluten-friendly options), and I have to say how much I appreciated their putting up with my detailed questions and handling them so accommodatingly and smoothly. Secondly, the service was warm, welcoming, and accommodating (we had a bit of an unusual request, had driven from out of town and asked to store a couple of pieces of luggage while we ate there because of the heat and not wanting to leave them in the car (hadn't checked in to the hotel yet (Canopy by Hilton Tempe Downtown, which I reviewed on Yelp as well)). Sorry I don't remember our server's name but she was sweet and personable and efficient and checked on us and really just on top of her game. The food - exquisite. I read good reviews on Yelp, but somehow I still wasn't expecting it to be THIS good! Talk about memorable dining experiences. Delicious chicken wings as a starter, and for the entrees, my wife enjoyed the steak Frits, perfectly executed and perfectly done to medium well. Most importantly, delicious, flavorful meat, crispy French fries, and a nice subtle au poivre sauce. Me? I had the NY Strip, served atop an amazing black garlic truffle risotto - what a great complement, the earthy flavor of the risotto a perfect match for the steak, which was again perfectly cooked to medium well (I saw a few Yelpers note their steaks were under done, but not the case for us, I mean PERFECT medium well doneness) and incredibly flavorful. And by flavorful I don't mean too salty, which some steakhouses get away with. Here at The Peppermill, it's the real deal, the flavor comes from the food, not the salt. But the accompaniment didn't end there - there was also an outstanding chimichurri - green apple poblano chimichurri to be specific. AND fried leeks. It all worked in harmony. OUTSTANDING meal. The Peppermill Steakhouse was open the next time I went and I was very pleased with the dining experience. The wings on happy hour are $8 for and order of 1w wings. These were cooked to perfection. The wing flavor changes every week. It was Carolina BBQ this time. I went on a Thursday so it was burger and a brew for $18. The burger was a nacho smash burger which was good but would have been better if served hot. The cheese was cold. The burger and bun were a little warm. Our first visit to the Peppermill last evening - 5:30 reservation for 4. Nice place, it's small, but nicely decorated. We were greeted promptly and the team was very friendly. Mike was our server and he did a great job - he was the only server working and the place was packed by 6:30. Kudos to Mike for great service despite the demands for his attention. I really wanted to give this place 4 stars, but will have to wait to update after a return visit in the future. It is a smaller restaurant, so reservations are probably good idea. Tables are a bit tight next to each other - so you can't help but 'bother' your neighbor a bit. Food was very good, portions are very, very big. The wood-fired beet salad was enough for 3 people, same with the steak tartare. Entree portions are large too. Lamb chops, pork chop were very good and had plenty left to take home. My son enjoyed his filet. The flank/flat iron steak sauce was simply too sweet - my wife did not enjoy it at all. Some nice touches on the entrees - gnocchi with the marsala pork chop - very good; pork chop was a bit tough, but not too bad. Zucchini cannelonis with goat cheese with the lamb chops were very good. We will probably go back at some point in time, but be aware, while the service and food is good, you will pay for it....it's a bit spendy. read more

I've been here maybe a dozen times. It started out very good. Had great happy hour plates and first few things we tried were good. They have a rotating menu so items are always changing. Cocktails were initially very good. Last time I was there both cocktails I ordered were not made properly. I've had that strawberry martini and aloe drink multiple times. This time... the strawberry one tasted like pure lemon juice. I did send that one back. I tried to explain to the server it wasn't made properly but she just didn't understand what I was saying. I suspect they were batched and someone messed up because the replacement was just as bad. I expect an expensive drink to be made properly. The service has really deteriorated. The last time I was there there were 2 servers. It took forever to get anything and most of the time they were standing around talking. We also came to realize everything is overly sweet. Every chefs whim I've ordered has been covered in a sweet balsamic glaze. Even the beet salad is super sweet. I do appreciate the creative items - the duck confit appetizers (pop tart, chile relleno) are always good, although also usually a bit too sweet. I like the dim lighting and enjoy the music they play. The peppermill is no longer on my regular rotation although I live close so will still pop in occasionally but will stick to sitting at the bar (better service) and will stick to wine over the cocktails. read more

Hands down this place will become a local favorite. It's really nice to see local businesses push out corporate chains. I would be surprised if they didn't outgrow the space by the spring time. We brought a group of 7 for lunch (yes despite their Google hours they ARE open for lunch beginning at 11). We were seated and right away. Got our drinks and food within 30 min. This place has a Midwestern charm mixed with a heavy dash of upscale elegance. The devilled eggs were smooth with the perfect mustard sourness mixed with zesty pickle. The prime rib sliders were a nice cut soaked with rich au jus and a healthy dose of horse radish. If you don't like horse radish order it without. To me it was better because I am not a fan of horse radish. We had the butternut squash ravioli. Honestly not my favorite. I prefer mine in a rich butter sauce. These were thicker noodle then I prefer and don't have a protein so a little too heavy for me. Everyone loved their hamburgers and cuts of meat. The checuterie board had great cuts of different meats and amazing cheeses. We found out later the owners were from Wisconsin which explains the appreciation for rich sauces, meats, and fine cheese. Wow. I read the reviews before we went and fully expected to be impressed, but this was really a fantastic dinner, and I can't wait to come back. I had friends in from the East Coast for the Superbowl and we wanted a nice evening out with a good meal, not far from the Ahwatukee area. So I managed to get a reservation here just a few days ahead. We arrived right on time, and were greeted right away and our table was ready for us. Our server, Ashley, was fantastic. She gave some good advice on drink orders and then asked about appetizers. We saw a charcuterie board go by and decided we needed to start with that. It was a great decision. Sorry the photo only shows what was left after 5 of us took a pass at it. We were all happy with the variety. For dinner we had steak, pork chops, duck, a burger and a salad, so we were able to try a wide variety of options and nothing disappointed. However we sat at our table for 20 minutes before we had ANY service, when the waitress came over she said "are you ready to get some food in?" Umm we didn't even put in drinks or were greeted or anything... it would be nice to start there. I had the filet and my wife had the NY strip, my "rare plus" filet came out medium and my side of asparagus consisted of only 2 asparagus spears.. though the taste and pepper sauce were quite good despite being over cooked. My wife's NY strip was devoid of any seasoning and had a strip of fat. The place is cute and has an artsy charm to it with about 12 tables, it's a little loud even with only 5 tables but I get it. It's just ehh and mediocre overall, felt very overpriced at $200 for what we received. We had excellent food and service here at the Peppermill. Myself, I ordered the butter board to share and the coconut shrimp. My mom ordered the sea bass, my dad ordered the lobster and goat cheese Wellington, my sister and daughter shared the cheese pizza - lots of options and everything was delicious. My coconut shrimp were perfectly crispy and the right mix of sweet and spicy. Our favorite butters were the apple butter and bone marrow - so great! The sea bass was also excellent! Next and best, a bowl of mussels, in a superb broth with fennel sausage. Generous slices of grilled sourdough bread were the highlight of the table. Brother had pork belly salad, and thoroughly enjoyed. Crisp, perfect lettuce and crispy chunks bacon like pork! Wife has the Sunday special, prime rib. Huge portion, tender and delicious. Took 2/3 home for next 2 meals. Grilled asparagus was excellent. I had the flat iron steak with German potato salad and beans. Came with 2 portions of steak. Tried first one, a bit tough and chewy. Second one tender and delicious. Big chunky potato salad. Tasty beans, kinda ranchy, BBQ and sweet. Liked them. Brother had a bowl of cioppino. Lots of good sized shrimp, chunks of lobster, octopus and fish. Delicious broth. I tasted it, lobster was tough, shrimp tasted a day late. Huge portion! Octopus good, fish pieces good. Portions very generous, and everything was very tasty. It's obvious the Chef cares about the food and we respect that. Poor waiter kept a good attitude, but he needed help. Tried a little desert. Small unpretentious restaurant with a welcoming vibe, open kitchen layout and creative menu. We had a group of 7, ordered the bone marrow, escargot, & charred octopus for starters. For the main course, we ordered a garlic seafood risotto, braised short ribs, skirt steak and 4 of us had the peppercorn NY strip. My steak came w/cheddar broccoli and duck fat potato wedges. My steak was a bit on the salty side w/the extra herb butter dollop, and a little rarer than my requested medium rare, but no complaints overall, still tasty. I'd rather have it on the rare side vs. overcooked. I had a bite of the seafood risotto, yummy, creamy and extreme garlic forward flavor. It was large portions, all of us took a to-go box home. The Server was the highlight, so graciously split our check AND split the appetizers too, without prompting. It was a great night out, my portion came out to about $92 with a glass of house red and tip included. It got a little warm by the end of the night, I think due to the kitchen working hard. If you minus the waitress/hostess who sested us this place I would say compares on the level of another great STEAK restaurant in the valley, I'd go as far as say, it may even be a slight bit better !!! We all ordered different versions of steak, from regular flat iron to filet mignon. The steaks were presented with jaw dropping smells !!!! These pristine cuts were cut, cooked and delivered to PERFECTION. They literally melted in your mouth. You can't even imagine how delicious these steaks were. This writer couldn't even imagine a steak with more taste then the one that was presented to me or the rest of the table it was beyond words. So, on the bad side there was a minor misunderstanding and because of that the owner jumped into action and corrected it without even batting an eyelash, she presented a desert plate that was to die for , from fudge cubes to lemon cake, from Tiramisu pudding to coffee cake , there had to be 8 different items on it. I rarely give 5-stars but this place is worth it. The food is amazing!!! It was hard to decide on which appetizer to get but we narrowed it down the lobster bruschetta. The portion size is large so it's easily shareable. Chunks of lobster were topped on warm toasted thick bread with a pico type of topping. We ate every bite. We also shared the beet salad that came with prosciutto, arugula, toasted bread and a light vinaigrette dressing on the side. We also ate every bite. For the main course, I had the rack of lamb, medium rare, that was seared and sitting on top of a bed of rice and yellow squash. The lamb was tender and seasoned so well that I had to eat it off the bone. My honey got the filet with whipped potatoes topped with an onion ring. He ate it all The ambience is very casual. There's a bar and open kitchen and seating for large and small parties. Service was attentive and helpful. Our server helped us decide on our apps. You won't be disappointed when coming here. Okay, the Chef does have an extensive pedigree but this is as local as it gets. It's located in a strip mall and kind of a not in your face kind of place. If a friend didn't recommend it I would have never have found it. The staff is friendly and on point. The bar had a pretty good selection of Bourbons, whiskeys and even top of the line tequilas. I had the Beef Prime Sunday special and special it was. It had a huge slab of prime rib. The mashed potatoes were perfect and the asparagus was crunchy the way it should be. I am not sure what these 5 star ratings are for this place, as I have the opposite experience. A date took me here trying to tell me he's taking me to his favorite steak house and when we sat down we waited 30 min for drinks and I had to flag the person down. I ordered their New York strip which came with this gross yellow sauce all over the top which I scraped off. The sides were inedible and whatever it was the plate not attractive. When I cut into this New York Strip steak I was disappointed how much gristle and fat was on a cut that was $48. Every other bite I had to spit out. The bill was over $300 as we drank a lot of wine ($15/glass) since the service was slow and food was average. I will not return to this place that has rude staff and chef that can't pick out a good cut of meat as they claim. Save your money and your stomach there are tons of other good steak places in the valley. read more

There is always a changeup, and we look forward to it every time as it's refreshing, to say the least. Great date spot. Things that have stood out for me, the Limoncello Mule, the Blueberry Coconut Margaritas for cocktails. Dinner is best as I've dabbled with the Crispy Duck Legs, Short Ribs & Steak & Fritas when available. The Surf & Turf was Great and we had to take some of it home as it was loaded with shrimp & lobster. Making reservations is your best bet but you can also just come in and sit at the bar (TV's on tap and plenty of cocktails). With the hours being limited, Brunch is currently not available. I have been dying to go to the Peppermill since we moved here seven years ago and so many people have raved about it. It's a tiny spot and reservations are definitely necessary to get in (unless you plan to sit at the bar). The lighting is setup to be mood lighting and the decor is very simple. We were seated right away at our reservation time. The server was excellent and stayed on top of our needs the entire time (drinks were never empty and she was so friendly). This place apparently updates their menu often and you can expect to get things as they come (substitutions aren't really allowed). One of my friends and I decided we were feeling adventurous and did the chefs whim appetizer. It was probably my favorite part of the meal. We were given tuna "steaks" that sat on top of a crispy pork rind, pickled mini cucumber and very fresh slices of avocado. Topped with a spicy mayo and soy sauces. Literally chefs kiss. The lobster fried rice that came with the ribeye was only okay but the lobster was perfectly cooked (it was still in the tail which was used as decor on the plate). Our filets were nicely cooked and the accompanying sauce was SO insanely good. The green beans weren't cooked the best so that was a little disappointing. The biggest disappointment was the fact that our filets were a little chewy. Highlight of the meal other than the chefs whim was the pork belly wedge salad. The dill ranch was so fresh and paired beautifully with the crispy pork. I would definitely recommend this place if you're an adventurous eater but otherwise you might not love it. read more

Wanted to try something different and we found this place online. Great food and great staff! Love the small casual atmosphere. I had the roasted chicken with peppers and rice and the flavor was distinctly different and wonderful. My wife had the steak and fries and she loved her meal as well. Both plates together could have easily fed four people! We sat at the bar and our bartender was very friendly and attentive to everyone. I noticed the cooks and the wait staff seem to have a great team spirit going and it shows in their customer service. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some drinks and an appetizer first. The strawberry rhubarb martini was insanely good. I wanted to chug it like Kool-aid. The bacon and onion topping on our fried chicken pierogis was kinda burned and the chicken pieces were over cooked but we still enjoyed the appetizer. The corn sauce on it was killer!! Very large portion too, which seems to be a theme here. We tried the burger and it was the fattest patty I've ever seen in my life. I thought I might have to unhinge my jaw to eat it. I originally planned on a nice steak dinner, but after perusing the menu, I elected to go with 2 appetizers instead. The mussels were plentiful and flavorful. The octopus was slightly overcooked, but still far better than you find elsewhere. Our other guests enjoyed the scallops and salmon. My only complaint would be the music was too loud to allow for conversation. That's why they got 4 and not 5 stars. Overall this was an exceptional find. read more

A hidden gem. From the outside it looks like a hole in a wall, but definitely worth the try. We were greeted by a very nice hostess/bartender who offered us seats at the bar for immediate assistance. We took it because it is small inside and it looked like a big party of 20 was seated in the center of the restaurant. She made us some delicious drinks to start off. We ordered our meals and she gave us a lot of good customer service. Everything we ordered was extremely good. Steak was cooked a perfect medium with plenty of flavor. I asked if the menu changes because I noticed some of the old yelp reviews had other items. She told me yes it changes every three months. Everything about this restaurant was fantastic. We stumbled on this restaurant completely randomly while we were in the area. It's true what they say, the locally owned/small mom and pop restaurants are the best and this one does not disappoint. The happy hour menu is soooo reasonable and we love that they offer "chef's choice" on their menu for both entrees and appetizers. We sat there and drooled over the hamachi crudo and the soft shell crab BLT that came out. Unfortunately, you can never select the dish you see but I am confident that whatever the chef selects for you will be a delicious surprise! For our meal, we got the rib eye steak and French onion soup with the "whim's choice" pork belly. Everything was honestly so delicious, satisfying and well seasoned. I really didn't have any complaints other than we couldn't order the hamachi crudo that came out because it was a "whim's choice." While I was slights annoyed that we couldn't just order it, i understand their desire to keep the element of surprise and spontaneity alive. Basically, if you knew what you were getting then it wouldn't be the chef's choice right? My advice would be to come here with an open mind and an adventurous attitude. Wonderful first time experience! I've been wanting to try this spot for some time now but every time I seem to have a night off seems to be in the beginning of the week when they are closed! We ended up here on a Sunday night, thankfully there was room for two for dinner with no wait. Excellent service and food was even better than expected.
